I bought the first ChromeCast dongle when it first came out.. -(3 years ago? More?) and turned my "dumb TV" into "smart tv" saved loads of money!Recently decided to upgrade, as there was a sale on Chrome Ultra. Well it CAN be powered just through USB from TV, however the cable that comes with it has powersocket + Ethernet socket that power through mini USB the dongle. But i used my own USB to mini USB & its fine.I would recommend getting 2nd generation (this is 3rd),as so far i haven't noticed the claimed "faster loading times".. But design and eas of mind that you are "future proof" (you never know whats going to happen in future, so you cant really be that prepared).. Enough of rant.If you got money,

(for the uninitiated)1st off you can only use this device with a smartphone or tablet no "controller" is supplied like other "streaming" boxes which sounds like a downside but this device offers so much more than these other devices music photos web smart home automation ....that just works! Even if you don't go in for all that modern tech I defy anyone will this device hands down easiest to use on market.....now side note I'm getting old like really old without my glasses I can't read the Netflix text with this device I click on my phone or tablet and cast and control just as if not easier than my Roku also I can pause my kids TV from other rooms in the house just because I want to ...

The 4k feature is nice, but I think the thing that sets this above the rest is the wired network connection option. Also, it boots up faster than my TV, which is fantastic.It comes with a dedicated plug, which means the power is supplied from the wall, rather than the TV's usb port. This enables you to turn on the TV via the chromecast when streaming without having to first turn the TV on.Great device, if you are looking at buying a new chromecast, and have the coin, i highly recommend it

Great little addition to the smart features in my home. Can beam most things from phone to TV including pictures, videos and even your screen (handy when playing pictionary air!). Needed the ultra version for 4k content. Not sure why the price jump is so big between the normal cast and ultra. On first attempt it didn't connect to Google home but a quick reset and had no issues since! Can even turn TV on and off by asking assistant and it will turn your TV into a photo album from Google photos!

Compared to other casting devices to tv, google chromecast is excellent value. There are many services such as BT sport and Netflix that is supported on chromecast. However, if attempting to cast or mirror a screen from an IPad where an app is not supported it becomes more difficult to use. The Apple store does have apps. Quality of the image on the tv screen is excellent though and if you are prepared to look through the Apple store you will find many apps that are compatible with chromecast.

I have this plugged directly into my av receiver (yamaha rx-a860) and use a network cable from the router. It was easy to setup and has worked flawlessly with the exception of an occasional issue if I turn the tv on before the chromecast (fixed by turning them off then on again in the right order).I can now seamlessly cast netflix, iplayer, youtube, and videos from Facebook etc via the web browser from any device (phone, ipad, laptop) to the tv. Netflix plays in perfect 5.1 surround sound.

I bought the Chromecast as I wanted to stream my new VR system to my TV. It does is seamlessly, allowing us to watch what VR user is watching. Handy when showing the system to my folks and I'm trying to get them to select options that they say aren't there!I have a smart TV which has a lot of the features of Chromecast and allows me to stream my laptop etc. to it anyway, but now other members of the household can stream to it a lot easily from their devices.Easily set up and easy to use.

This is an excellent way to stream videos from the various streaming apps from your smartphone and laptop, as well as sharing photos onto a larger HD TV screen that cannot connect to the internet itself. Just plug it into a spare HDMI port on the TV, link it up to your Wi-Fi network with your Google account and the Google Home app and away you go! Note that it comes with a power cable and plug which needs a spare mains socket within approx. 2 m range of the HDMI port on the TV you plug into.

I was going to buy the apple tv box thingme.By chance I found this on Argos, thought we would give it a go. Neat & tidy, easy to set up. The only thing that lets it down, is there being no remote and having to do it all off of my phone, which isn’t really a problem because my phone is still fully functional, just a pain if I’m doing something and have to stop to sort the programs out for someone else in the house. Overall this doesn’t bother me too much, but worth noting. Good buy.

This Chromecast Ultra is great. I got this for streaming things from my iPad when at my girlfriends house. At home I have an Apple TV and use this occasionally for watching films, but the range of uses for this Chromecast are much wider, plus it's nice to not be tied to just apple products. The quality is impressive, although I haven't tested it on a 4k TV, it looks really clear. No speed issues whatsoever and this was over WiFi on a wet string (extremely poor) Sky Broadband connection.

Got the Google Chromecast Ultra as I wanted to be able to cast from all devices (phones, tablets and laptops) and the reviews were solid. It was super easy to set up and use and the extra features were a welcome surprise. I really like how easily I can choose to play a spotify track and it fires up my TV and soundbar seemlessly and avoids me having to fiddle with multiple remotes. Not a whole lot that won't cast so it's a beast in the compatability department and great value for money.

We bought this to fit with our Google Home to extend the voice activated options of our smart TV. There are things you can do and things you can't! Set your expectations quite low for the level of voice control you have over your Chromecast. Works best operating from your smart phone to navigate and transmit content to your tv. Quality looks great on my 4k TV and some nice integration aspects through Google Home. Expect to spend some time off you want more sophisticated set up options.

Purchased the ultra as an upgrade to the normal chrome cast I’ve had for years. Can’t say I’ve noticed it faster or better quality but works well. It has the option of connection to your router with a isdn cable or through WiFi. Haven’t totally explored all the options from this direct linkage becaus I always use the chrome cast with my iPad. It’s really quick and easy to set up using the google home app. The ultra is Shinier than the std version if that floats your boat!

Well worth the additional cost over the basic chromecast purely for the ethernet socket you get on the power plug. My wireless signal is very poor so I needed the ethernet capabilities and not once have I had a problem streaming anything from my phone to the google dongle. The quality of my streams are mostly 1080p and above and always looks great on my pre smart lcd tv. Definitely notice the difference using this over my xbox one for streams. Excellent bit of kit.

I mean it. This little small device has enabled myself and my family to learn online video through casting from various devices, to quickly share caught phone experiences to different family members, engaging educational online videos where I feel I can participate with my young one. It's truly a remarkable device with such a simple function. Access to a bigger display of small devices opens up doors. It also enables easy demos to clients without lots of cables.
