Pure Insect Blasting Fun!I've been waiting forever for this game to get a UK release, ever since that Japanese review Edge printed a few years ago I knew I had to have this. I've been chasing this game ever since then, pre ordering it off multiple websites only for it to be cancelled everytime a release date drew near.So a big thank you to Essential Games for giving this incredible title a release in the UK, only for it to no doubt be completely ignored by the masses and not stocked in the game stores.But now I finally own it and it's such a joy to play!, the jet pack, the huge variety of weapons, the number of giant insects on screen at once, the sheer scale of everything,it's all just so amazing.Not since Shadow of the Colossus have I felt so dwarfed by the scale of a game. The graphics and the distance you can fire are quite impressive for the PS2 and except for some slow down in the more destructive moments it's hard to believe this is a budget game.I've been playing as the female jetpack wearing character for over 6 hours now and have only found a few of the character specific weapons and believe I'm only half way through the missions.Then there's the male character who gets to control vehicles like helicopters, tanks and hover bikes as well as getting a whole new set of different weapons.I've heard that the 360 version (Earth Defence Force 2017) although far prettier to look at is a much hollower experience because each level is pretty much the same.But GDF has so much variety to it's blasting action, with multiple levels that pit you against a huge variety of different enemies be they flying saucers, web spitting spiders or Godzilla!.There's also lots of locations that vary between night and day, night missions being the most impressive when the lasers start flying in all their neon glory.There's a huge change in weaponary tactics depending on whether you pick the male or female character, as most of the females weapons are powered from her jet packs recharging power supply and she's unable to enter vehicles and use their higher fire power.So I highly recommend giving this game a try, it's pure fun like all games should be and if you hate insects all the more reason to jump in.

This has been hyped heavily on Digitiser, Channel 4's teletext computing magazine, and to be honest I can see why. It's criminal that this has taken two years to get a UK release. Criminal too, to think that a budget games company can produce something like this on a shoestring compared to some of the dross turned out by larger developers (THQ, EA, UBISOFT to name but three who could do with a good kicking :o) )Basically this is Robotron in 3D: Spiders, ants, flying things, (Godzilla!) descend from their spaceship in wave upon wave and it's your job to blast them all to kingdom come. The scenery changes and occasionally you'll come up against an immense `Shadow Of The Collossus' type boss.But it's not subtle, there's no tactics to it whatsoever and no one's going to be dishing out laurels for innovation, graphics or design.So, you want stealth? Buy a Hitman game. You want adventure & a story? Try Okami.Want to blast giant bugs that are running amok all across the planet? Welcome to Global Defence Force!It's a fabulous 3rd person shooter, one of the very best on the PS2, and for pure, visceral arcade thrills it just doesn't get any better. The size of the bugs, the scale of the landscape and the palpable tension when you're caught in the middle of a buzzing throng of poison spitting flying ants waiting for your super weapon to reload is brilliant. And the overwhelming rush of adrenaline when you finally shoot your way out brings back fond memories of escaping the ghosts in Pacman, swerving past enemies in Bomb Jack or clearing that final wave in Tempest.They really don't make games like this anymore. It's a gem and you need it.Word of warning, this is becoming ridiculously hard to find but at the time of writing, both eBay and playasia.com had them at a reasonable price. Also GDF's sequel appeared earlier in the year on the 360. It's called Earth Defence Force 2017 and is a 3 or 4 star game at best. The similarly titled Global Defence Force: Tactics on the PS2 is an RPG and worth only 2 or 3 stars. Don't get them confused.

Ok, imagine you have a video game based on Them, the classic B-movie where giant ants attack America. Now, imagine you have a game based on War of the Worlds. Imagine you have a game based on Independence Day. Imagine you have a game based on Eight-Legged Freaks, or any other film with giant spiders in it. Imagine you have a game based on Godzilla.Now, imagine that all these are blended into one game, and you have Global Defence Force, which plays like every giant monster film of the 50s rolled into one, but with all these overwhelming threats to life as we know it defeated by one lone bloke with a gun and a seemingly infinite amount of ammunition.Sure, it's ridiculous, but it's also a hell of a lot of fun,and exposes an awful lot of games for the pedestrian, unimaginative, crawling things they are.Plus, you can blow up buildings.

If you liked EDF 2017 on the Xbox 360 and you own a PS2, then this game is for you. It's better in pretty much every single way (apart from the helicopter gunship lacking missiles).This was developed after EDF and it shows (EDF is really the second in the series; the first was for PSone). Two characters, each with their own weapons. Day and night levels. Better music and atmosphere. Better special effects (shattering glass and exploding containers). Better levels with much more variety (including real-world locations).I can't praise it highly enough. Hours of fun still left in the PS2 and don't forget it's got split-screen co-op.

Budget games are usually rubbish, but not this one - it's set in a huge city where the aim is simple: kill everything!You can only take two weapons into battle which gives it a tactical feel while new weapons are unlocked after every mission which gives a good reason to keep on playing. The graphics are pretty good - when you get to play around with helicopters the draw distance is impressive - and there can be dozens of enemies (giant ants, spiders and huge robots) on the screen at once. Environments can be blown apart and one of the characters also has a jet-pack. Good fun in two-player too.

I only just got this game as it was much lauded but I've fallen for that before on a few occasions but this is great,you run or fly round city streets etc. and blow up huge bugs,nuff said,it comes across as a budget version of a less complex Gun Valkyrie only with the ability to upgrade due to being able to replay levels,my only gripes are,the slowdown is quite noticeable until you've cleared a few of the bugs,but since all the environments are destructible this is a minor worry and even though I'm playing 'inverted' the tank's turret isn't?,all in all,great!

Bought this from the reviews already presented on this game and it's been so much fun. Up to level 40+ and seems that just when you've squashed as many ants, spiders and saucers as you thought possible....there's another batch hatching just up the street.Some missions you fail badly at but then just have another stab with a bigger rocket or missile launcher...but watch out on the ones that track or they'll end up back in your lap...ouch !. Also found that your better on foot as the jet bike and copter controls are dire.

I think everything's been said about this already, but just to confirm, this is one of the best PS2 games out there. Far better than EDF 2017 which didn't impress me, this one gets it right. F.U.N.What's not to love about flying a jetpack over London raining hot plasma lead upon armies of giant ants and spiders accompanied by perfect B-movie music? Cue big grin. 140 weapons (though I doubt I'll ever unlock them all). Exploding buildings, helicopters, bikes, tanks, co-op, deathmatch... It's the dog's Bs.

Good game but perhaps slightly overrated as a cult classic. Graphics were decent for their time but not outstanding. It just felt slightly cheap to be honest. Not a premium gaming experience (for the time!!)

while the game engine is shoddy the game is enjoyable and more fun with friends its a nice little game with a few minor glitches but it gives you a fun experience :)

Excellent bug blasting action.. and any game thet lets you repeatedly blow up the houses of parliament gets a thumbs-up from me!! Excellent fun... buy, buy, buy!!
