I was close to sending this thermometer back as faulty until I worked out how the measured temperature is displayed. This thermometer has a blue backing strip running the length of the inside tube, which looks like a backing colour to make it easier to read. It also has a silver bulb of liquid at the bottom.I had assumed that after 4 minutes in the mouth, the silver liquid would have moved up the inside tube and would be easily readable. But no, the liquid seems to be clear (hence invisible) and just changes the angle at which the blue backing strip can be seen. By holding the thermometer horizontally and rotating it slightly, your view switches between the full blue strip and a smaller length of blue strip at the lower end of the scale, the smaller length indicating the temperature. The instructions do not mention this.

This is still the most reliable way to take your loved ones' temperatures!Having researched 30+ digital options that takes the temperature from the forehead or the ear, my conclusion was that I cannot trust any of them! They all seemed to be sold by different companies when in reality they all shared the same manufacturer in China! And all of the higher reviewed ones had shady reviews by non-Amazon-verified customers. The true reviews all seemed to say that the digital ones are widely inaccurate. All of the negative reviews associated with this product has nothing to do with its accuracy. Rather, it has to do with the customers not being able to reset the thermometer. I never had a problem with resetting it,and you probably won't either. This product simply works!

very good, it doesn't require batteries, so it will always work. it will not let you down when you need it the most on a very cold winter night when you have fever and want to measure your temperature to see how bad it is... i had a very good one which works on batteries, but when i got it out to measure my wife's temperature at night, i realized the damn batteries were dead... so it went right into the rubbish bin, can't rely on it anymore...then decided to buy this one. the only downside is that it takes about 5 minutes to measure the correct temperature... but if you are ill and in bead then you have a lot of time anyway.... good luck.

The first order arrived broken thanks to Royal Mail but the seller quickly replaced it and I'm very pleased with the product. It works very well and is easy to use. I did think twice about buying it as there were so many people who wrote that they could not shake the fluid down. 1. There's a plastic holder supplied that helps to do this and 2. you have to read the thermometer holding it straight and not tilted away as in doing so this shows a blue line that is not the temperature reading. Just takes four minutes to take a temperature when held under the tongue . No batteries to worry about running out.

Arrived safe and sound, and is easy to use (once you've got the knack of shaking it back to zero after use, which only took me a couple of tries).I don't buy from Amazon when there's any alternative, since the last time I heard they were still dodging their taxes. But I've been absolutely unable to find a glass thermometer in other places, including the big chemists' shops - they stock only those little LCD strip thermometers, which although quick in theory are very fiddly and five times less accurate than a glass one! (to the nearest degree, or half a degree with luck.)

Yes, those electronic thermometers that read in seconds from being placed in the ear are great (especially for kids), but what happens when it's late a night and you discover that the battery has run out?In my opinion, these classic thermometers are an essential for every medicine cabinet. No batteries, just a little bit of time and some surgical spirit to sterilize the tip and that's all you need. this thermometer seems accurate and gives a temperature reading at any time of day or night. A must.

I have not used it yet but have used similar ones before and am happy I have found it through amazon since all of the many chemists in my busy london borough that I've asked only have digital thermometers. I only use a thermometer once in a blue moon, by which time the battery needs replacing. This is usually not the best time to go looking for a replacement, especially knowing it may only be used while someone in the house is ill, which may not be for months or years.

I tried a digital thermometer but it was complicated and not the sort of thing you need to bother with if you're feeling ill. Also, the digital thermometer relies on a battery, which may well turn out to be flat next time you need it.Anyone can use an old-fashioned glass thermometer, easily and instinctively, without having to find the instructions or check that the battery is working, and this is an example where old technology is vastly superior to new technology.

After loosing my old faithful but Fahrenheit mercury filled medical thermometer and having had an appalling experience with an electronic thermometer, I went for this classic thermometer. It's great, accurate, made of glass and works just like the old mercury filled thermometers. This thermometer is filled with a gallium/indium/tin amalgam which looks and behaves like the now banned mercury. Geratherm are a respected German manufacturer of medical instruments.

I went through a few digital thermometers (not the very expensive ones though) and the series of measurments were never consistent. I decided then to order an old school analogue thermometer and it's just does what it says. It's brilliant. It's exact, simple to use, no batteries, no bipping noise (!), and hardly takes any storage space. It is the original Geratherm product and I highly reccomend it to anyone struggling with the overdigitazation of our lives.

When I got this I found it really tricky to read in the early morning light and nearly impossible to shake down. Luckily, I found two tips elsewhere online that meant this works excellently. 1. You can take your temperature and read it later in the light 2. To shake down, put it in a sock pointier end first and keeping a tight grip, swing it round and round swiftly for a few seconds - works every time :-)

Product seems accurate but takes a long time to give final reading, 4 minutes according to instructions. You then have to shake the thermometer vigorously to return the liquid to the bulb. This has to be done carefully as the thermometer is made of glass and is quite fragile. The thermometer is accurate to 0.1°C which is very good and it was inexpensive, so, overall good value if you have patience.

So glad that I found this simple classic thermometer. I was tired of these new electronic thermometers which never work and need new batteries all the time. Finally back to classics.Works great and is very accurate. Comes together with the case and plastic shaker. To be honest I never used the shaker and probably never will. I found it easier to shake it in the traditional way.

This is a great thermometer. I love the fact that it does not use batteries. I had a digital thermometer before, but I always had to worry about when the batteries might run out. The Classic Thermometer does not need batteries and that is a blessing. You only need to shake it down between each use, which is easy to do. I recommend this thermometer to everyone.

This is a very good thermometer, I have only given it 3 stars for ease of use, but I concede this may be me and not the thermometer. I find it impossible to shake the liquid down to reset it, but this seems to be a knack I just don't have and is probably not the thermometer's fault. I like it very much, quality construction and a very good price.
