Bought this to record high quality video of my on/off road cycle rides but I've ended up using it for all manner of video and stills... YouTube instructional drumming videos... 'thru-London' motorcycle commutes... dashboard camera footage... and it's been brilliant in every scenario. It's easy to mount as Garmin do a whole series of mounts for it (It comes with self-adhering flat and curved surface mounts as well as various extenders and direction changers)... and if they don't have whet you need, the included clear waterproof case or optional 'cage' have 'GoPro'-compatible fixing points.Regarding the VIRB Ultra 30 itself,it's very easy to use as the user interface is very intuitive and the menu-driven touchscreen is clear and responsive (even in the waterproof case). It has dedicated controls for recording video (excellent quality as you'd expect from 720 to 4K) and taking stills (12MP 4:3 or 8MP 16:9) with the former being activated via a rotary switch. This even works when the camera is switched off... so as soon as you flick the switch, it starts recording and then switches off when you stop recording... which is useful for just catching the footage you want and helps save battery life. The lens has a very wide field of view which can be set to two stages of digital zoom and also features low light boost, electronic lens correction (to 'straighten out' the fish eye effect) and electronic stabilisation (which works quite well but crops the image a little - also not available when recording 4K). The on-board microphone is fairly impressive, but the playback speaker, while okay in some environments, is a little on the quiet side. As well as being remote-controllable from other Garmin devices (I have a Forerunner 735XT and a Zumo 590LM which can both start and stop recording) it also responds to basic voice commands, (wake word is "OK Garmin"). For my cycle rides, I use this in conjunction with Garmin's speed, cadence and heart monitors (all very easy to pair) and the G-Metrix data - which is very accurate - is great to overlay when you're editing the video via Garmin's free-to-download VIRB Edit software. I've also tried the VIRB connect software on my android phone which can remotely stream the image to your phone but that was less successful (a lot of image lag and a lot of app crashing).Downsides? None really. I suppose you could say battery life isn't fabulous (but given their physical size, that's probably not surprising). Garmin say around two hours but that's likely basic minimum resolution recording with no frills. 1080 / 60FPS with image stabilisation and GPS will see it record around 50 minutes at best, while recording at 4K sees around 25 minutes. While there are spare batteries available, there doesn't appear to be a way of charging them outside of the camera (no charging docks available - although don't quote me on that one). It can also be a bit fussy about microSD cards. It didn't like two I had... but most of the other ones I tried worked fine, even relatively slow read/write ones (I have since bought a SanDisk Extreme 90MB/s Class 10 to use with it exclusively).Other than that, all in all, I'm really impressed with its performance and ease of use. Highly recommended.

I own this camera 10 months now. It has been used snowboarding, mountain biking, scuba diving and the casual selfie in trips. In terms of picture quality it is one of the best and the low light performance is pretty good. I have some great videos taken from a safari trip during night time. For diving the colour performance is superb.Other things, wifi works fine but not at a great range, battery is just ok at 90', sound commands work fine if its not windy, virb edit software is a limited tool in many aspects, particularly in what you can do with sound.I will second all praises for the video switch, its a feature that alone makes this worth buying for. Its great for snowboarding and mountain biking in my experience, not so great for scuba. Actually the switch failed in my last dive which soaked my camera at depth and it died. Happily garmin acknowledged this and replaced the camera and housing.Something to clarify for the gps data. For accurate measurements the camera must be switched on for at least 2 mins. The measurements themselves are not so accurate, particularly inclination and speed. But i cannot risk a naked housing for better accuracy as i might damage the camera. The stabilizer option is great to have but limiting in the image quality you can choose (1080). Same is true for other options bundled like taking a snapshot while recording. Essentially you will only get all features at 720 resolution. The same issue comes up in all cameras of the latest generation. If they can implement optical stabilisers like sony and a bit stronger chipsets than what garmin and gopro are offering today, we are gonna have some pretty amazing results. I am hopeful this will be sooner than later.

I bought this for my daughters to use on a trip to climb Kilimanjaro and go on safari. I already have GoPro gear and extensive Canon DSLR kit so would be picky about picture quality. They used the GoPro headband and the stabilizing handle below.https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B018RZD9KW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I specifically wanted the 4k ultra HD capability. I turned off wifi and gps on the Virb before they left to save battery as much as possible. The video and still quality on the 4k television are absolutely fantastic, amazing detail, perfect colours and very good exposure levels. The stills and paused video frames are extremely sharp from close up to infinity and easily the match of anything on a DSLR.The fisheye effect is lovely for the shots on the summit and the prairie panoramic stuff. The voice command worked perfectly 99% of the time and was really useful when using the headband while climbing. Saying "ok Garmin start recording" and "ok Garmin take a picture" was ideal for handfree usage.Very pleased with my purchase - recommended

Having had a chance now to fully use the Garmin for it's intended use (Paragliding), I can say that this is a top piece of Kit, a bit pricey but then I am future proofing with 4K. The camera is compact along the lines of the GoPro family but is really easy to use and the LCD touch screen makes it even esaier. The voice activation works well and saves having to fiddle with buttons and will be great over long use to start and stop as I go. The quality of the recorded video is excellent and the G Metrix are great to really add weight to the video and to be able to review the activity and how it went. By the way, if you are upgrading from the GoPro family, don't remove the GoPro mounts you already have, just place the Garmin directly onto them. No need for extra stickies or the new Garmin mount (which is different). Great item

I bought this on the strength of the voice control commands. I'm a kayaker and sometimes it's mounted out of reach. All the voice controls work brilliantly - except 'start recording'. That, for some inexplicable reason, only works for me if I put on an Irish accent - then it works fine. Other than that it's a great unit. the operating system is dead easy to use and its mounts seem bomb proof. It's been filming under water (with the right case and door) and has not leaked and the video and sound quality is excellent. Even when filming with the noise of a weir behind me, my voice is sharp. Very happy

Whilst everyone talks about Go-Pro this and Go-Pro that, take a look at the reviews... because THIS Garmin is just as good; BETTER I'd say!!Voice activation just SMACKS IT!! And works every time!! Taken this on two trips now; it's been through the mill and comes back telling me, "Is that all you've got!!??"Handles anything you throw at it - with aplomb! 4K footage just sublime!Superb camera - the only one you'll ever need!

Had this for a while now, give a good run, record time varies depending upon your settings, battery time about 1-2 hours, I would like there to be a way to charge it while using it in the car, the housing does not allow that.

very happy with camera, much rather have this than a gopro 4. If you are into sports, the metric you can apply are fantastic, so many options and if like me you have cycling sensors these pair with the camera for added stats.

Good picture quality and the voice control is better than I thought it would be, the menu is laid out well and easy to use.

A little difficult to set up and change settings but the app makes it easier, the customisable presets too.
