Wife bought me this (along with the Garmin RTL510 radar tail light) to use on my ‘cyclocross’ bike with a Garmin Edge 830 cycling computer. I use the older Garmin HL500 headlight with a pair of TL300 tail lights on my ‘road’ bike and really like the performance and functionality, either used on their own, with a Garmin Varia Remote or when controlled by a Garmin Edge 130 cycling computer that I primarily use with that bike... so was really looking forward to how this headlight performed in comparison. The UT800 is definitely a lot brighter than the older HL500. It does however have less of a controlled beam pattern compared to the HL500. It’s more ‘main beam’ to the HL500’s ‘dipped beam’ to use car terminology...so great for dark gravel trails and unlit country lanes but probably not so great on the road for oncoming road users, particularly if used at full brightness. The UT works differently to the HL in that it just varies the brightness of its LED... whereas the HL in addition to being able to vary the brightness could also switch between two different beam patterns. It's definitely more versatile in this regard and therefore more suited to road use than this... but it's a much bulkier unit and not as bright when at its brightest setting. It is however, a lot lighter in weight than the HL500 and mounts securely on the included out-front mount. The ‘GoPro’ compatible mounting bracket allows for independent beam height adjustment relative to the mount (which you couldn’t do with the HL500) as well as giving you choice for other GoPro-able mounting options, such as your cycle helmet. Recharging is by micro USB and I found it takes around 5 hours from its low battery warning using your average phone charger.Downsides? When networked with other Garmin Varia lights and my Edge 830, it disconnects quite a lot and won't reconnect unless reset. I don't know if that is a Edge 830 thing or the UT800 but my other setup with the Edge 130 and the older Varia lights don't do this. Also, I find that the battery life isn’t great when it’s being controlled by the cycle computer. I get just about an hour and a half most of the time because it often adjusts the output to maximum where it isn’t really needed. It then starts to use lower powered flash modes after but I gather this is only because it’s now running low on battery. I actually get much more out of it controlling it manually (like my road bike using a Garmin Varia Remote). Switching between flashing but mainly constant low and medium levels - I get around four hours. The whole point of having the computer adjust the output depending on your speed and environment is to save battery... but this isn’t quite working out. It may just be simply that I cycle a lot at night and average a higher speed than the threshold which switches the lighting to its brightest setting... but it could also be down to either the settings on my Edge 830 or as I have discovered with all of my other Garmin products, it may just require a firmware update. But speaking of which, you can’t update it (or even register it) via Garmin Express on my PC - as I can with all of my other Garmin products - without purchasing Garmin’s ANT stick. This isn’t the case with any of the other Garmin Varia range... they all get recognised and registered automatically when plugged in via USB... so why is the UT800 not the same...? It apparently can receive updates via the Edge it’s connected to but still doesn’t get around the registering problem which can seemingly only be done using Garmin Express. Bit odd, that...Other than those not entirely insurmountable issues, I’m really pleased with it. It’s looks neat on the bike, is more than bright enough for all of my cycling uses and the smart features have potential (once I can get them to stop eating the battery they’re trying to save).

While I was initially impressed by videos showing ut800, after actually receiving it I'm less so...I guess that's why there are so few reviews for this Garmin product...I recently purchased Garmin Edge 1000 Bundle and I'm getting all the accessories :a. Garmin Silicon Case for Edge 1000b. Garmin UT800 Front lightc. Garmin Viara Radar Rear lightd. Garmin RemoteI just received the UT800 Smart Light last night and when I first read about it and watched Youtube videos about it, it seemed like really cool device, plus it saves space on handle bars since it could be mounted below Edge 1000 on the Out-Front Mount...That said,I'm not that impressed any more with this light as I also ordered Night Rider Lumina 1100 OLED Boost...Both lights cost same but Nite Rider is lot more powerful ( brighter 1100 vs 800 ), charging is easier and faster. The Nite Rider can more easily be detached and carried in one's hand to use as powerful flash light, emergency light, while walking, etc...Nite Rider seems to stand behind and support this product better than Garmin supports theirs...Night Rider has lifetime on the hardware, case, buttons, lens, all mechanical and battery is expected to last between 3 to 5 years...I'd like to keep them both and that's lot of powerful front lighten but expense $150 x 2...I'll test the UT800 tonight and if it doesn't impress and live up to Garmin and other youtube videos, it's going to be returned... Plus I think the network connection to the Edge 1000 drains addition battery...I have following items connecting to Edge 1000:a. heart monitorb. speed sensorc. cadence sensord. UT800 lighte. Viara Radar lightDon't get me wrong, the UT800 looks good, but it's not something you'd hold in your hand as it gets really hot quick.I have ut800 on my smartphone 2.1A charger and it still takes 4hrs plus...Nite Ride which has 1100 has something called intellicharge built into the light that allows it to charge faster when it detects a charger than can output more amperage...Like Garmin, but I'm leaning towards Nite Rider...May keep both, but seems like waste since I don't ride much in evening, but that could change if I light up whole pathway or road...Another reason I think I'm leaning towards Nite Rider is they have excellent product support...I was able to easily find their customer support number and reach someone instantly and not only did they satisfactorily answer all my questions their attitude, demeanor and words basically assured me that if I had any issues with their newest light, they'd take care of me...I never once felt they were trying to hide behind warranty and try to offer less or minimal service...Throughout the conversation and I called them three times back to back... First time bad connection / they couldn't hear me in my cell phone. Second time I asked tons of questions about new light and also what if warranty issue. Third time I called them back to thank them for the excellent and superb customer service...Service was so awesome it made me feel they'd be there for me...Though this review is for the ut800, seems I'm congratulating and promoting Nite Rider more...So for those thinking and considering getting the UT800 take look at Nite Rider Lumina 1000 OLED Boost ( one with display on top )...There's nothing wrong with UT800, I just feel for money, Nite Riders 1100 equivalent which just came out month or so ago seems like better purchase...Garmin ut800 below Edge 1000 on same mount may look better than nite Rider on handle bars, but it provides less light...

So first off I think Garmin Edge set up is really well done and I am writing a brief review for the three units purchased. Not sure alone they make much sense, this kit is expensive compared to other options out there no doubt. If you ask me is it over priced as a package, I’d say no. I am sure you will read review and review watching someone trying to add cred to their You Tube rating or social media trouncing of a major brand in our sport but that fact remains, if something works, it works.Edge 820 - itself is a nice head unit with more compact features of the 1000 but for me it is all about size and portability off the bike. Quick on and off and the provided bracket is great.I do not like strapping things to my stem so the extended cockpit bracket that comes with both 820 and light work just fine. The overall usage seems like my other Garmin units, I have tried other brands and for my non professional riding I need simple data and Garmin has provided this to me for almost 15 years now only better. I do use MFP to interface my Fitbit data into one place. The UT 800 headlamp - amazing build and function. It’s a freaking headlamp why does it have to cost so much you ask? Once you use it you’ll figure it out. I do a lot of hard pack and gravel night rides and have used other units all work but none as well as this UT 800. I have also demo’ed some of the more expensive units that are amazing but for my needs this thing is perfect. How it integrates into the bracket is well executed and secure and the unit while still light is heavy duty built it seems to withstand a little abuse. While I have crashed a few times with all the kit, I have never hit anything with the brackets. Installation and bluetooth set up was so simple and battery life runs longer than I do.TL 300 taillight - Why did I buy this? I have a perfect tail lamp unit that runs a long time on aaa’s but I was curious simply about the integration into the edge system. It works and integration is excellent. It’s bright, motion active, and easy to recharge on the bike. How it all fits and works together is genius, well done worth the money for my needs on a new bike build. I would probably have gone with 520 and cheaper lighting options and saved $300.00 if I were on a budget but it would not be truly integrated.

I don't ride at night but use this because of it's day-flash mode. It is SUPER bright! Definitely helps get attention. The light pairs with many garmin devices or you can use it stand alone. When paired with a 830, you can leave the light in a standby mode. In stanndby the lights fire up automatically when you start an activity. Pretty Cool!!! Or you can just power it down completely. Also, when paired w/830 you can control the light mode via the 830 interface. That way you don't have to reach down and fidget with the light.I cheaped out on a go-pro mount, and of course, needless to say, the light flew off when i hit a bump at 18+ mph. The light hit the ground and bounced up high,so high I was able to reach to the side and swat it so it would land closer to the side walk and away from cars where it could get run over (yes it has happened, I had a watch that fell and got run over.) At any rate, the light only had a minor scuff and still works great! amazing, I thought I had lost the light for good.

I've used this for a while now and I have to say i'm impressed! It is super bright and really lights up the road in front perfectly when on full power. My night rides are not too long (around 30 minutes) and it's never run out. If you're out on longer rides, you'd need to use it on one of the lower power settings to conserve power. It will connect to compatible Garmin Edge cycle computers. This is great, but if you're a road cyclist and consistently go at a decent speed, it always selects the most powerful setting which may not get you home if it's a long ride. Although the connectivity is impressive, I prefer to use it in manual so I can set it how I want.It is one sturdy light as well, constructed of aluminium, it feels really solid and well made. It's waterproof to IPX7 as well so is fine to use in the rain. The only issue for me is that it can be a bit too bright! It does have a tendency to dazzle oncoming traffic, other than that though, this is a top quality high powered bike light.

Let me preface this review with I have completely bought into the Garmin cycling infrastructure. I use their cycling GPS, a Varia rear radar light and now the headlight. The head unit controls everything which makes it very easy to set up and use. It uses an ANT+ communication system to communicate and when paired, the head unit can turn on and off the light, monitor battery and change how the light works based on various settable conditions. While I don't use this much for night time riding, as a daytime running light its bright and visible. I have mine set to strobe so I get noticed and it saves on battery. There are less expensive options but none that I know of that will work well with the rest of the Garmin components.

The reality is that there are better and certainly less expensive choices. You also have to decide whether the ability to form a 'light network' and control it from a Garmin head unit has any value to you. If it has, buy this headlight; if it hasn't, buy something cheaper. You should also take into consideration the fact that Garmin stuff doesn't work flawlessly 100% of the time. On the whole, the head unit connects to my Vector pedals, the lights, the Di2, my heart monitor and my phone ..... but, sometimes it doesn't and I've been in the situation where the light has decided to set itself to 'high' which runs the battery flat in 90 minutes.

This thing is quite bright. The medium setting seems enough out in the country where I ride. Two minor quibbles: (1) the light goes to full brightness at something like 12 mph, way too low where I ride, and not editable. (2) It's a bit fiddly to get the light to form a "light network" with my Garmin Edge 830, and I have to repeat the process every time I ride. Maybe there is a setting I'm missing to automate the pairing; I will have to play with it some more. Battery life seems typical for units of this brightness, so no complaints on that front. Overall, a nice, sleek unit with a cool and useful automatic brightness feature.

I mainly bought this expensive light so I can pair it with my Garmin Edge 520+ cycling computer. I like the integration between the two, where the computer turns the light on/off, automagically adjusts the beam intensity, and gauges how much battery life is left, and the front mount works with the front mount of the Edge 520+. However, if I wasn't a Garmin Edge user, I would just buy a Niterider (and I have a Micro Lumina 850 as my helmet light) for 1/3 the price and works just as well. At high beam it only lasts 1.5 hours. That's why I only gave it 4 stars to reflect the price/performance ratio.

7.10.2018

Great quality light with a number of useful modes. Syncs quickly with my Garmin GPS. Battery life is pretty good. The distance of the beam is good for night and the day flash makes you visible to other road users. The unit is small but quite heavy if you are someone that is concerned about every gram on your carbon bike.It loses one star as when in standby it is easy to switch on accidentally when kept in a bag (I don't leave the lights on my bike when parked up). The light becomes very hot after a time which is not a problem on the bike but can be in an enclosed space such as a rucksack.

This is my favorite cycling accessory purchase I've made by a long shot. It gets about 3 hours of battery life on auto-adjust mode when paired with my computer, more if I run it on blink mode. Low light is probably not bright enough for night riding unless you're going <10 mph. But medium is plenty strong for speeds under 20 mph. The included mount is awesome. My only design complaint would be the standard camera-style mount which causes some unneeded bulk when trying to store it in your jersey. Would have preferred the quarter-turn mount to be integrated like with the HL 500.

11.11.2019

Good solid light, not the best at this price point but has some nice features. The auto adjust via a garmin edge has its uses although it does seem to want to be on full beam a lot. This means the battery doesn't last long and with my 20-30 mile commute I'm charging it every day during winter. Attachment via out front mount is marvellous if a little fiddly to attach (could be me) but once in place seems secure and out of the way. Expensive but seems of good quality. I would recommend, but there are other lights out there cheaper that do a similar job.

27.2.2020

I bought this light to make myself seen by any oncoming motorists; the quality is excellent (though I did have a problem with the first item I was sent but Amazon replaced swiftly with no hassle) and outputs a very strong beam with lots of different lighting options (levels of brightness or flashing). It's easy to fit and has a long battery life (I've done 3-4 long rides (2-3 hours each) and not yet charged it again. If the price doesn't put you off then I highly recommend this!

25.2.2019

Great light if you are a Garmin user, links to the light network and allows full control from the 1030. The VIRB mount at the bottom can prove to be challenging to install. For some handle bars another bracket is needed to allow for the distance from the back of the light to the handlebar. As it will become permanently attached this means that charging has to be done in situ also it does mean that if you leave your bike locked up outside, you can’t take the light with you.

4.9.2020

Great light and works perfectly with my Edge 520 computer. To get more battery life, I usually manually override the automatic features, so I can keep it in blinking mode or on low. Great light output on med or high, but drains the battery rather quickly (as expected). Install is easy and secure. IMO, not the "cleanest" of looks, but very functional. Just the right number of light modes and well made/sturdy piece of equipment. Pleased with my purchase.
