I've had my Fenix 5 Plus for a few weeks now and it rarely leaves my wrist. Given the lack of a manual that gives an entire menu structure, it's sometimes difficult to find things (a Google search will often provide a clue) but it covers pretty much every sport, day to day activity tracking including steps, floors and sleep and also has a music player and the ability to work as a contactless payment mechanism. It will also show notifications from your phone such as messages, appointments, Facebook, etc. Nice being able to quickly read an arriving text message and also send a response (there are some preset answers but you can add your own)without digging the phone out. Some people have had issues with the wrist based heart rate and it is admittedly a little less reliable for some folk than a chest strap but who is going to wear one of those all day? I found that shaving the hairs under the watch improved matters - it doesn't show and it's now in direct contact with my skin. I'm pretty happy with the numbers it's giving me and if they're not totally accurate (as some claim), they seem consistent and show logical trends. The Garmin Pay facility is pretty useless in the UK at the moment as it doesn't recognise many banks, but that will get better through upgrades. I've not tested the music player as I don't have any Bluetooth headphones - yet! However Spotify Premium (which many reviews will tell you is coming) and Deezer are now activated apparently. You can also download Garmin and third-party apps some probably more useful than others, but demonstration that it's not locked down in any way and you're free to customise it as you wish. It will also pair and receive data from various sports devices on bikes, etc again not just Garmin branded.Out on the trail/road, the GPS locks on in less than 30 seconds (rather than the minutes I've suffered with other watches) and with GLONASS, Galileo and GPS satellites on offer, it seems pretty solid. The maps are limited and are obviously difficult to read on such a small screen. Through a Google search I've found a way to install OpenStreetMaps for free which have more detail than the default and are a cheap alternative to Garmin's expensive offerings. I may use them more once I'm more confident about the other features.Battery life is pretty good - I've seen complaints but that's often comparing it to a previous version that had far fewer functions - I've no complaints.Should you buy it? If you want the ultimate sports watch - absolutely. Do you need it? Probably not! It does more things than you'll ever need but it's a solid bit of kit that will serve you well. Just look out for the best deal - got mine in a Black Friday sale.UPDATE LATE JANUARY 2019 - after a couple of months, I'm still pretty pleased with the device. It's worn 24/7 except when charging, but still looks as new. I have bought a rubber plug for a couple of pounds that covers the charging pins. These should be provided by Garmin in my view, given the price of the Fenix but a worthwhile investment I felt. It's still providing reasonably accurate HR numbers provided I shave the hairs under the watch every few weeks. However the altimeter number seems to bear no relation to reality and the temperature likewise. Presume that the latter is simply reflecting body temp. Neither of these are major factors as Garmin Connect will correct the elevation profile and the Met Office is pretty reliable!Whilst it's pretty solid as a GPS device, it does suffer from the usual issues as a fitness tracker like many similar devices I suspect. The measure of stairs climbed upwards is pretty unreliable and I've usually descended far more than I've climbed at the end of the day despite beginning and ending in the same bed. Similarly, the sleep tracker is no more than a guide affected perhaps by me being restless (although asleep); although it seems broadly accurate. These are minor issues for me.

Wow, what a massive upgrade from the Fenix 5!First of all the connectivity issues have been fixed, and Bluetooth range has gone from under a meter to 7 or 8. My foot pod never drops out now, and I can leave my phone in the kitchen and still have my watch stay connected and getting notifications.Wi-Fi is now standard with all models, which is great as Bluetooth syncing is pretty slow going after an activity; with Wi-Fi it's pretty much instant.Storing and playing music on the watch is quick and dead easy. It has a handy shortcut to open the music app on the watch, which also lets you connect or pair headphones/earphones from the same menu. It can play single tracks, artists, albums, folders or playlists. There's about 7.5GB of space left on the watch for music, the maps and interface take up the rest of the 16GB.The maps are amazing, but my standard Fenix 5 didn't have them, so not sure if they've been improved at all. It can do turn-by-turn navigation, direct you to points of interest, or even any point you like on the map, and can get you on the most active tracks around you with the new heat-map feature. The new GPS (Galileo) seems great so far on the couple of runs I've done, and looks like it's going to be more accurate than GPS + Glonass. There's a slightly more powerful CPU in the watch, which makes the whole interface way more snappy than the Fenix 5. There's no lag switching between widgets and everything is smooth. One thing to note is the online music apps aren't working that great at the moment. You're meant to be able to do an offline sync to your watch, but a lot of people are having issues. I'll be sticking to my own music libraries for now.So far I'm very happy with my purchase, but will update my review if anything changes as it's still early days.

Only first got it yesterday, but already I can see and feel how it is head and shoulders over my Vivoactive HR.My first device was the Microsoft band 2. Simple, but still had wrist hr, gps, workouts, fantastic sleep tracking, great companion app. I was waiting for the band 3 when MS discontinued their band program, which made me start looking for an alternate. Got the VivHR cause it had all the same features really and more than the band 2.Sadly no workout capacity though and the sleep tracking was meh.Having this combines the two and adds heaps and heaps of information and features. Especially the sleep tracking shows awake, light, deep and REM cyclea.I was skeptical at first with the lack of touchscreen, but tbh it hasn't made a huge difference to me. I can see once I start running, especially in the rain, the physical buttons will be much better. Both the VivHR and band 2 had touchscreen issues in the rain. Also my runs got cut in two a few times due to accidentally hitting the touchscreen on VivHR.I plan on editing after a few workouts and I want to try a week or so of the coach guided workouts. But so far I am more than happy with it. Can't wait to to see the full features and use the mapping while traveling.Update: 04/03/2019I have had this a fair few weeks and it just keeps impressing me. HR monitoring seems fine, the workouts are great, and the comfort is just so much better than the vivoactive. I only take this off to charge it, which with my use is about 5 maybe 6 days, but I do about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise 3 to 4 times a week and 1 bout of an hour a week.Don't pay for the super expensive straps, you can get great replacement straps for a fraction of the price. If you are on the fence, just bite the bullet and get it.

I must admit it was hard to choose this watch, but I'm super happy I did!I've read inumerous reviews on this model and it made me think if I should buy it or save some money and go for the regular fenix 5. Yes it's true that this model is very similar to the previous one- The built construction is fabulous (same as previous)- All the multisport activities are very similar as well- Majority of the widgets are present in both- Battery life is not that different (slight better on the previous fenix)But what really brought me for this model was- The snappier system, faster processor- Maps, great for creating your own routes- Music, great for the gym,so the phone can be left at home or the locker- And it's a more recent model as wellThe garmin pay is not that important quite honestly, I use my oyster card or contacless via phone. But of course if you are having a very bad day, where the oyster card is sitting at home alongside with your wallet and the phone is dead, then garmin will save you a long walk home.Overall this watch is the same as the Fenix 5, but with extra features (that is where the "Plus" comes in). I'm not here to tell you which one to buy, but these are the reasons why I bought it. I'm not rich and I don't like burning money, but this buy was for me a very good investment, that will last me quite a few years!By the way, I went for the regular screen, because after a lot of research I found that Sapphire screen wouldn't be that important for me, since I'm not planning to be rock climbing nor getting into very rough conditions, and I never had issues with mineral glass before.

UPDATE 29/03/19 - Latest updates fixed all problems which is good! Back upto 5 stars!Update 24/03/19 - Still having Bluetooth connectivity issues...…. sometimes connects to my earphones sometimes not. I have tried 3 different pairs and still have the same issue despite the fact it will happily connect to my phone without a problem. Annoying as the whole point was not to have to take my phone out running!Updated 21/02/19 - Been having many connectivity issues with Bluetooth. Getting very annoying now. I’m going to hold out for the next up date and hopefully this fixed it.So far I love it. Got it at a very reasonable price of £450 paying monthly (£90 x 5 Months).I have experienced none of the connection issues I had read about and the heart rate monitor seems accurate in comparison to my old FR235. I guess there had been some decent updates since it was first released. Love the look, weight and features. Not that much bigger than my 235. The feel the S would have been to small an the X too big! I'm 5.7" medium build. Also a lot of decent after market bands on amazon for around £13!

I had a Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro which was beginning to show some signs that it was reaching the end of it's useful life!I initial bought the Samsung Galaxy Watch which I thought was the logical upgrade. However, I realised that the Samsungs can't broadcast heartrate over Ant and this was factor for me since I ride and have a head unit on my bike but don't always want the hassle of the heart rate strap.So... I bought the Fenix. Initially I admit, not having a touch screen seemed a step back and I was undecided if I'd made a mistake...Well, 1 week on, all I can say is if you want a serious fitness tracker that also has smart notifications, get the Fenix! I'm getting whole new insights in to my fitness from the Connect app.The heart rate is accurate and the battery life is amazing. It's expensive but I'm so glad I made the change. If you're on the fence, maybe take the plunge...

After several months of wair, many of the bugs on this watch have been fixed and I am now wearing this watch as my daily watch.Battery life is as advertised. I've managed a week and a half on one charge, which included 16km's of running, but battery not as good as the 5. The hardware seems a lot better and more responsive. Bluetooth connectivity has been flawless. Charging is touch and go - It can take up to 3 hours to charge and the screen of the Fenix does not show an accurate view of the battery charge.I have no use for Garmin pay, as the banks are extremely limited. The music app is extremely limited and does not support any of my music appsI have since returned this watch and bought elsewhere - Same issues though, generally not good fitness watch, definitely not worth the price tag.

I ordered this on Wednesday, shocked it arrived Thursday evening .Well I have only had this watch 3 days and all seems well. All features that I have used work flawlessly, but there are heaps more have yet to explore .The manual is ok a bit confusing at times but worked things out by trial and error, plus use all the U Tube tutorials they really get you up and running fast.In a nut great watch a bit pricey but would highly recommend it if you are a runner ,just a note I did not get the sapphire version as it’s a £100 more ,just get a good watch gave protector I got the Kimilar watch face protector they are tough about 1mm thick and do not impact the look or visibility of the watch face .Greatproduct as allways with garmin products I have 6 Garmin gps and all are fab

I absolutely love this watch there are so many different functions I doubt I'll ever use them all. It syncs perfectly with my phone and I particularly like that you can block apps from notifications on the watch just allowing the important ones.Another handy feature is the find my phone feature which makes your phone ring and gives you the proximity to the phone. The step tracking and activity tracking are all really good with high accuracy. It's excellent that you can load music onto the watch and pair with headphones so you don't need to take your phone with you on runs. The garmin connect app is great with good layout and lots of features. The watch fits well for everyday use. I'm 5ft10 average build.I feel the x would have been too big.

This is not a cheap watch. I mean that in both terms of cost of course, but also in terms of build quality, features, and style. It looks great, works brilliantly, and is packed full of pretty much ever feature you could want, and probably some you don't care about! I got it primarily for the GPS and mapping functionality and I have not been disappointed - I was able to navigate very effectively on an 8 hour un-signed race, and still had 50% battery at the end.If I was just starting running/cycling/whatever sport you do, there are likely better devices to start with (I started with the Forerunner 235, and wasn't disappointed) - but if you're serious and want the best,I'm not sure how you could do much better than the Fenix 5+.

Fantastic peice of equipment! Have had a Fenix 5s prior to this, whilst it was good, this is a different sort of gravy! Somehow it feels better built, quicker and much more responsive, delivers -so far- very accurate information. The only negative i can see is the time it takes to charge, that said, once fully charged it stays charged for up to a week depending on how much activity I do and if I use spotify on it. One final point is a Garmin issue rather than the watch itself as unlike the apple iwatch ive had, the “wallet” is limited in which bank card you can upload which is slightly annoying as you are still reliant of packing a card or phone for those after run cups of coffee! But all in all brilliant!

This is a watch that you need to put some effort into to the get the best out of. For example, the altitude 'drifts off', on fiddling around with the setting I realised you could set it to re-calibrate itself once per day.Personally I don't use the Garmin pay facility, not the music function. The smartwatch functions work well and it connects with an iPhone well and easily. I had trouble connecting with an old Garmin HRM, but it was OK with a cheap ANT+ HRM from eBay.I really like the mapping (I downloaded maps from talkytoaster for the UK & the alps) - and have used the watch to verify location against paper maps.Recommended.

Happy with this watch, good price offered by Amazon. Retired my Apple Watch 3 as the Fenix works very well with my other Garmin equipment including heart monitor and Vector 3 pedals. Battery life is comfortably a week maybe 10 days. Comfortable to wear, music plays well to BT headphones. Mapping software is not 100% reliable, has some reliability issues when searching, this will never replace a phone in my view. But I payed a premium for this feature so not entirely satisfied. Bluetooth connectivity to my iPhone 8 not always guaranteed but this could be a phone issue. My 4 star rating is based on the mapping not being error free.

I so wanted to like it and I did (hence high marks) but had to send it back nevertheless. That's not the watches fault at all, although the actual battery life wasn't quite as amazing as promised. I only tried a fraction of the functions and they were all great. However, this watch is big and heavy. Not necessarily bigger and heavier than others in that segment but too heavy to have on my wrist. I constantly felt it digging into my hand when bending my wrist (e.g biking) and I labouring on a tennis elbow, it could become outright painful. So not for me but what I've seen from the functional side - very good watch!

I have had fenix sports watches from fenix 2. The 5+ offers great sports features and activity tracking. I also have an Apple Watch 3 and purchased 5+ instead of the Apple Watch 4. The Garmin mobile app is great and the fact that I can connect all my ant+ devices is a big bonus. If you’re looking for a sports watch with smart watch features I recommend the fenix 5+, if you’re looking for a smart watch with sports features then Apple Watch 4 is the way to go. Big tick in the box for me is battery life is key which so far is around 5 days plus depending on use
