Been riding and servicing my own bikes forever. I never thought about headsets much until a bought a new bike which started creaking after a few weeks. I traced it to the headset bearings, and when I looked the issue up I found it was quite common. Solution was to grease and re-adjust the bearings which made sense, as this being a new bike, the bearing may not have been greased properly to start with. So, my new bike had a KING, which are supposed to be one of the best (and most expensive). I was dismayed to find the bearing cage is captive within the cup, and cannot be removed, so I did the best forcing grease in there as best I could. I reassemble the headset, and it was fine.....no more creaking, problem solved!.....or so I thought. 2 weeks later creaking was back again. Repeated procedure. Fine for 2 weeks. This time I ordered another headset from Ritchey. I made sure the bearings could be removed from their cups and serviced this time.Replaced whole headset, and all was fine.....for 2 weeks. Then creaking appeared.....not as bad as with the King bearing, but nevertheless, annoying. I thought maybe I hadn't greased enough, or reassembled correctly, so I went through the procedure again.2 weeks later, creaking was back. Now I had to ask myself why, with all the previous bikes I owned, had I never had this problem. I soon discovered all my other bikes had 'SEALED' cartridge bearing headsets, which brings me to the purchase of this FSA.My order arrived yesterday and I duly replaced the Ritchey headset. Assembly was easy, and what I noticed was I didnt need to torque the preload bolt anywhere near as much as the King or Ritchey to remove play.My first ride on the new bearing and it felt as though I was riding on glass. Steering was smooth and frictionless. All that remains to be seen now is if the creak comes back, but I suspect its cured.So....if anyone else is suffering from an incurable creaking headset, consider sealed cartridge bearings. Both my King & Ritchey were semi open. and from my experience, prone to creaking.
