If you've never owned a smartwatch and you have an Android phone, good news, this will be a brilliant time to jump in.If, like me, you are returning to Wear OS after some time away, you may be disappointed at the lack of any significant improvements in the last 4+ years.Let me break it down so you can decide if it's worth a purchase for you.Good points:Classy designComfortable1Gb RAM makes it quick and smooth all the timeNFC means you can use Google Pay, which is funBuilt in speaker is usefulMore watch faces than you can shake a stick atBad points:Battery life is no better than watches from 4 years agoSpeaker for calls is a useless stuttery messNo official charging dock,so the watch just has to lie flat on a night stand, or lie on the floorNo way of stopping the watch making a noise when an alarm goes off on the phoneNo way of changing the alarm soundI was surprised at how simple the packaging is, I would have expected it to be a bit more special at this price point. This doesn't bother me too much, as I'm sure most people like myself will just take out the watch and charger, then never see the box again.Setup is straight forward, the Wear OS app on the phone guides you through the process of signing into things and updating the watch if needed. The watch for me wouldn't turn on until I attached the charger for the first time, so bare that in mind.I like the design, it is understated, but looks good, slightly larger than I would usually wear, but fits nicely on the wrist. The use of 22mm straps means changing them out is easy, with a mass of options for customisation. The display is crisp and works fine outdoors for me. There is however, a bezel around the display, and while only a few millimetres, is noticeable. This is the only criticism I have of the display though. Performance is pretty great, all the time. Apps load fast, scrolling is smooth (especially when using the scroll wheel)Battery life is the main point of contention I have with the watch. Using the different battery modes does allow you to eek out plenty of time if required, though you sacrifice certain features that actually make the watch great to use. Using the 'Daily' mode, I would have the battery down to 10% after ~12 hours, which I wouldn't class as all day. Using 'Extended' gets me through all day, but turns off too much . Custom allows you to tailor this, but I feel the 'Daily' option should last at least all day.Overall, great watch, average battery. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

My expectation of this product was high as I've always previously owned other non-wear OS smartwatches which notoriously come with its own bespoke watch operating system. So I was looking forward to getting my hands on this watch not only because of the great brand but also the opportunity to try out wear OS.The setup was quick and relatively straight forward although I would strongly recommend making sure you have downloaded and opened the Wear OS app before starting up the watch. The box contains the smartwatch, USB type A charging dock and quick instructions and warranty information. From the get go after setup the watch was easy to use and very intuitive with Wear OS making things easy enough to find and customise. The built in watch faces are stylish if not a little bland but you have plenty of choice to change these via the Wear OS app on your phone and some on the watch itself. My version of the watch came with a lovely silicone strap but this can be changed to any standard watch strap so you get good flexibility here. The buttons on the side are shortcut buttons to start a workout or get to the custom Fossil app which allows you to store different watch face designs so you can quickly change between different watch faces. The crown can be twisted to navigate through the menus quickly or you can just as easily use the very nice and pin sharp touch screen.Having been using the watch for a while there a couple of things you should be aware of before buying. When comparing to my previous non-wear OS watch, the battery life of this watch is not as good. I can easily get 4-5 days of battery on my previous watch but with the same usage, I can just about get 2-3 days with the Fossil. As well as this the charging dock is bespoke, so again would be nice if I could just pop this down on my wireless charging pad rather than having to have another cable just to charge my watch. Also the processor on my device seemed to be a little slow as sometimes you can be left waiting a couple of seconds after hitting a button before it will react. This could just be more a Wear OS issue than anything but again something to keep in mind. It would have also been nice to have a USB C charger but that is only minor. So overall I'd say this is a great smartwatch and its price reflects this, it has a great design which is sleek and lightweight and it comes bundled with a great OS. The only things to improve would be the battery life and potentially a faster processor. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I have owned several smartwatches over the years, currently own a smartwatch which is great. My first impressions when I took the Fossil out of the box was how small and light it seemed. I straightaway put it on charge using the wireless charger that magnetically sticks to the back of the watch. Was quite impressed initially how quick it seemed to charge. I already had the Google Wear app installed on my Galaxy Note 10+, so got on with pairing the watch. This was an easy task and only took a couple of minutes.Next up was actually putting the watch on. Was quite surprised by the weight of it. Feels like it weighs about the same as my current watch but a fir bit smaller in size.Over the next couple of weeks I wore both watches together,1 on each wrist and alternated which wrist they were on. (got some strange looks at work). This allowed me to get a direct comparison between the 2 watches and different operating systems - current one runs on Tizen software and the Fossil runs on Google's wear software. Both watches are very similar in how they handle notifications, come through at more or less the same time. One of the best features of the Fossil was the notifications for my Nest Hello doorbell. On my current watch I receive the notification that someones at the front door, on the Fossil I get the same notification but also a picture of who is at the front door (same as on the phones notification) This was a big positive for me!The other feature that I preferred with the Fossil was the heart rate monitor software, Cardiogram. Much nicer platform and features that S Health.I do a lot of endurance cycling and training so this feature is nice to be able to monitor your stats. For comparison purposes on a couple of training rides, I used a heart rate monitor (chest type) and both watches. All 3 devices were within +-2bpm which is good.Couple of things that I didn't like with the watch was battery life. Although it charges quickly, it does seem to go down quickly. With the same sort of setup as my Samsung it was down to about 30% at the end of the evening compared to 65% with the Samsung. Secondly the bit that I didn't get on with is the physical button functionality, struggled to get to grips with the logic behind which button did what. Now in fairness this could be because I am so used to the rotary bezel on my current watch. In summary this is a great watch and a worthy contender to my current watch, this would make a great 1st smartwatch [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I’ve become a fan of the Fossil GEN 5 but it wasn’t without a few trials along the way. Starting with aesthetics the watch has the premium well made feel, and looks just like a normal watch. I was pleasantly surprised at how light it was, much lighter than my current smart(ish) watch. I was concerned that by wearing it on my left hand the buttons would dig into my hand, but no such issue. The strap is very comfortable and silky smooth but does suffer from picking up discarded dry skin.My first impression of the setup was that there was little or no setup information or a guide on how to use WearOS, something I think Fossil should consider improving to attract the less technically minded. The watch seemed to be very erratic and was doing some strange things and the batter seemed to drop from 84% to 5% in the space of 2 hours which alarmed me, until I later discovered, as other have that this was the result of a background updating process. Since then the watch has easily managed a full day of use, even with me playing with several features.I have managed to test several useful features, like Android pay, which once setup just works (very convenient). Using google maps and an app called citymapper proved very useful during a visit to London, navigating the transport around the city was so much better than having to constantly reach into my pocket for the next instruction. My one criticism that was almost a deal breaker for me was a fault with the Audio on phone calls. When making a call the caller could hear me just fine, but I could only hear broken audio. Upon researching this I found that it was a well-documented issue. A few people posted that Fossil were aware and were working on an update to fix it and in the meantime, users had suggested several temporary fixes. I fixed it for a few calls by Shutting down the watch then starting up, but the fault soon returned. I ran into another issue which I need to log with Fossil. If you turn off the watch it wont then power up unless you place it in the power cradle, which I found out whilst out of the house away from the cradle, rendering the watch useless until I got home. You are supposed to hold down the crown for 3 seconds to power back on but it doesn’t seem to always work.To my delight Fossil released the update on Friday, and it fixed the audio problem, and seems to have improved the power on issue as well. For me this watch is a keeper, it has so many genuine features that I will use. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Design:-Initially looked large when I opened the box for the first time but once it’s on your wrist it’s a perfect size. Watch is slim, much better than some of the previous iterations of wear os watches and its very light, you’ll forget it’s on your wrist throughout the day.The silicone strap is well made and extremely comfortable, I wear this to the gym daily and purchased a leather strap for other occasions which is simple to change using the quick release bands by Fossil.Screen:-The screen is clear and because of the flat design it gives a great screen estate. My only gripe was outdoor visibility which even on the brightest setting was difficult to read.Hardware:-Having previously owned a wear os watch with a 2100 chipset, the difference between this and older watches is like day and night. Everything is smooth, never felt a lag when scrolling or jumping between apps.I loved the vibration motor, the feedback is brilliant, I never felt like I missed a notification. It has a built in speaker which I found clear for phone calls and felt comfortable taking calls on the watch which made life so much easier.I was also a big fan of the charger, no pins simply place the phone over the charger and you’re good to charge, no fiddling around trying to line up pins or plug in a usb.Battery:-I found the battery gave me about a day and a half based on my use. I predominantly use the watch for notifications and I get a lot of them. Being a newer watch and chipset I also decided to keep the cardiogram on which measured my BPM and NFC and found the battery life was more than enough at the end of the day.Features:-My favourite feature was NFC. I set up the watch with GPay and used it to pay for travel on TFL or quickly pay at shops. It worked perfectly every time and it’s been by far my best feature.Another feature I loved is the extra buttons above and below the main crown which can be remapped to open your favourite apps, in my case GPay and a app to show my barcodes for loyalty cards at shops.Cons:-As mentioned above, I would have preferred a brighter screen, the other gripe I had was the small black gap between the bezel and screen. If you’re using a white watch face then you’ll notice it, however I found by switching to a black watch face it’s hardly noticeable. Another problem was bluetooth disconnects, they do happen but not as frequently as past smartwatches .Verdict:I’m sold, If I was asked should you buy this watch… YES! On first impressions the packaging and feel of the watch as you take it out the box is great. It feels great and well built and the Silicon strap makes it suitable for casual use and at places like the gym but at the same time it can look smart and formal. So, the setup was quick and easy, downloaded the Wear OS App on my android phone and set up the device, synced all my apps and content from my phone and off you go. So, the battery life is around 1 day, I’ve not had it run out before the end of the day so this is what you can usually expect from most Smart Watches. I don’t like the charging connector; I think fossil have missed out on not including standard QI Wireless Charging. If you take it away for a holiday or weekend, you’ll need to take the dedicated charger with you. The screen has a good resolution and so far, I’ve found it easy to view in all situations outside and inside. With a nice solid screen and I’ve not been able to scratch or mark it yet. The quick action buttons are a nice addition and allow you to start apps you want to use often or quickly like starting the fitness tracking app. The only issue I have found is that if you fold your hand back you can easily hold down the middle button and start the google assistant. But I also realised recently that you can use the middle button and turn it to scroll through notifications or lists. It’s a bit fiddly and small but does work. The speaker is sufficient for what you need in a watch and the microphone works well with the google assistant saving you having to get your phone out all the time. Now fitness side of the watch, i used Google Fit all the time on my previous watch but on the Fossil Gen 5 the app is much smoother and quicker. Most likely helped by the processor in the device being rather fast. The Heart Rate sensor is also very quick to react to changes in your workout so actually gives you an almost real time read out of your heart rate. This is a huge improvement over other Smart Watches. There were plenty of watch faces on the device which was great to pick through, but i'm surprised there wasn't a dedicated store or more of them from Fossil. The device is Waterproof and ive so far tested it in the shower, at the gym and in the sink and its been 100% fine, no issues. I am hoping to try it swimming soon too. Overall id definitely recommend this Smart Watch to anyone with an Android Phone with solid performance and good performance. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I've been using the Fossil Gen 5 - The Carlyle HR with black silicone strap for two weeks now and the best thing about it is that I don't notice it. It's there and it does what I want without fuss, it's not intrusively large and doesn't require constant charging. These were my top three concerns, and the reason I haven't kept any previous Wear OS smartwatches that I've tried.Size: It is a little tall but the diameter is perfectly comfortable, it's no heavier than some of my regular analogue watches and overall fits well.Charging: I don't wear a watch in the house so I've placed the charger next to my key bowl so it's virtually no different to what I do with any other watch.Fuss: Yes this is a bit vague but my concern was that it would be constantly trying to tell me about social updates, emails etc. but the Wear OS app makes it easy to choose which apps are allowed to disturb you. With this I've been able to whitelist only a few apps that I'm so desperate to hear from that I want my wrist to vibrate. So that's my initial concerns dealt with, what about the rest?I initially had an issue setting up the watch as I didn't know how to switch it on and when I did I tried to manually connect it to bluetooth. Once I'd slowed down and read the instructions (I'm getting old) it was a smooth process to set everything up.The battery charges quickly and usually sees me going from 100% to 60% in the ten hours that I am wearing it. I've tried the various mode and am confident that I could leave the charger at home if I was away for a weekend but I wouldn't bother as it's so compact that it would easily fit in the same place as I'd inevitable have my phone charger.Once set up, the software is intuitive and I easily activated the ability to pay for stuff and listen to music without needing to reach for my phone. There is a Fossil app but it's intended for their hybrid smartwatches that don't use Wear OS.The watch is comfortable on the wrist and the silicone strap, which I prefer over hair-pulling metal links, is large enough for my wrists with a few holes to spare. The straps are a standard size so could be swapped with another if preferred. The latest software update has fixed the issues with hearing callers when using the watch as a speakerphone so now I can talk to my watch without caring about the funny looks people give me! Why do you buy a smartwatch? Is it because you are passionate about arm jewellery and want to keep pace, do you want the functionality and convenience it can bring to many areas of life or is it a combination of the two? If it is the former - then, like me, you are going to appreciate the new Gen 5 Carlyle from Fossil. Packaging aside (not up to the normal Fossil standard - where is my funky tin?) it is a premium device. The watch is light, but with the heft of a decent timepiece, button movements are slick, it is proportioned like a normal timepiece and the silicone strap is probably the most comfortable I have ever encountered (was going to add it is silky smooth - but probably conjures up the wrong type of images). It is so nearly there - the interface is slick and even offers a heritage of some of Fossil's best analogue and digital efforts (including the Big Tic - which was my introduction into Fossil wristclocks). What lets it down - and this is sadly a fairly big down, is the battery. Choose your settings carefully and you can eke it into a full day of life while retaining much of the functionality - but turn the onboard GPS and WiFi on and you will be lucky not to be charging it after 10 hours. What this does (for me anyway) is renders these functions obsolete. I love the idea of on board GPS - but what use is it if I have to charge my watch after a day of work before going out? By the time it is ready to track my run, walk etc, I am not anymore and have moved onto something else. Given this - I wish they had used the space for a larger battery and made the Gen 5 the premium timepiece it is, with a battery life that reaches the same standard. Going back to my first thoughts - who is this for? For the pure smartwatch folk? Probably not - they are more likely to head for one of the existing flagship devices, which offer much of the same functionality but are more useable without having to find a socket before the device is ready. Is it for the watch aficionados? Maybe.... There aren't many premium wrist devices out there and the ability to change faces to almost any aspirational timepiece and wrap them in a quality surround is attractive. For those who have a toe in both camps, I think the answer is likely yes as the balance of design and function means there is not much else on the market to touch it currently. My experience of this watch has been an overall positive one. I have owned many smartwatches some of which being WearOS watches in the past. I have to say, I found this watch to be a middleground of these other watches. It took the positive aspects of the others and improved on certain things. Perfomance: As with other Wear OS watches, the Gen 5 opts for a high-perfromance result. It is clear that the new 3100 chipsiet is being showcased in full here. The 2GB of RAM only furthers this making the watch as buttery smooth as could be.Apps: The app selection is phenomenal and matches the likes of Apple. It has an app for anything you could dream of and the 8GB of storage makes downloading apps a more carefree situation.I generally used a select few such as Google maps, Play music and Google Translate. This is one aspect of the watch I miss when using other smartwatches.Navigation: The navigation on this watch is second to none and makes navigating the interface a breeze. IT has been one of the best I have used and I would actually opt for it over the Galaxy rotating bezel. It is so precise and makes going through the menus a more straightforward task.Battery: If there was one negative aspect of the Fossil Gen 5 for me, it would have to be the battery. For most, it may not be a problem popping the device on the charger nightly as most won't wear it to bed anyway yet for me, this was a sticking point. That being said, I don't want this one point to completely affect the review. This is probably minor for most and something which won't cause a problem. In daily testing I found myself to achieve 1-2 days use of battery and as long as it was put on the charger nightly there was no problem.Sports: Like its brother, the Fossil Sport, it has many sports modes courtesy of Wear OS. There are so many that it is a little riduculous however it is possible to select the ones you will actually use and place them on top. They range from Alpine skiing to Zumba. If you need the exercise you will find it within. It also helps that they have thrown in a waterproofing feature to the device. This is an important factore for me as I'm sure it is for many others. This watch has left so little to be wanted and I believe that anyone who is looking for a feature-packed, stylish and good value watch will want to check this one out. The Fossil Gen 5 is a very well-made smartwatch that feels good to wear. It is surprisingly light and flat so easy to forget you are even wearing it most of the time, yet feels solid and high quality. It works out of the box, of course, with a little bit of setup using the WearOS app on your phone, but the real power is in how much you can tweak just about every aspect of the watch. Finding a watch face you like is easy, and setting it up to display key information at a glance takes only a few minutes. The only problem is that there is so much choice, that if you are anything like me, you will be changing the face every few days! I still can't decide if I prefer a modern digital look or a more classic analogue style.Battery life seems fine - wearing it daily from 6am to 10pm, using normally through the day, with everything on including heart rate tracking, Bluetooth, WiFi, 'OK Google' detection and 'twist to wake' watch face leaves around 10% of battery remaining. It charges quite quickly though, so I would definitely stick it on for a quick 30 minute charge before going out again in the evening and would have confidence that it would last to the small hours. But a real plus point is the way you can customise the power options on the watch and switch off things you don't need in return for a much longer lasting battery. For me, WiFi isn't needed as I keep my phone within Bluetooth range all day, and I don't use Ok Google. Tweak the settings to turn these off and you easily get to 50% battery remaining at the end of a 16 hour day. Heart rate and step tracking appears to be pretty accurate, and for the few hours when I wore the Gen 5 and my old Fitbit, the two were almost identical in measurements. The Gen 5 takes a heart rate reading every 20 minutes rather than being always-on, which is good enough for my needs, but might be a limitation if you are doing short burst training I guess. The only downside I have noticed is when I upgraded my phone - the only way to pair with the new one was to do a factory reset of the watch, which of course meant I lost all my customisation and had to start again. All in all, a great watch, with lots of customisation possibilities. If Google keep developing WearOS and the apps you can use on the watch, I'll be very happy with it.

Until now, no smartwatch had seemed to match function and style. The Fossil watches have always shown promise, but the Gen 5 now marries design with functionality and is the first watch I would be happy to use daily. The black silicone version I have feels great; the material is smooth and does not rub. The 44mm casing is well-sized and doesn’t protrude too much. The all-black finish is sleek and comfortable. I believe you can change the strap, but I’m very happy with mine. I’ve not worn this in the shower yet, but it can be worn swimming and showering, so no need to take it off while washing your hands either. The Wear OS interface is great, and I love the customisation options.Third-party apps can extend this by installing the relevant apps on your phone and watch. The new “tiles” are basically like phone widgets, giving quick access to things like a timer or news headlines. The software is responsive and offers a wide range of compatible apps which link well. Spotify was particularly useful, switching songs easily. Changing the watchface itself is very simple, just a long press and you’re done! The display itself is sharp and colourful; I had no issues in bright sunlight either.A speaker means you can have alarms with sound and via Bluetooth you can take calls (as long it is paired to your phone). The speaker was good and quite crisp given the size of it. You can also access Google Assistant.Battery time can vary based on usage. Worst case scenario is a day, like most phones, but that was with heavy usage. Normal days would leave 35% left. The various power modes can extend this a lot further though. One is simply to run it as a watch only, meaning if you do miss a charge overnight, you still have some functionality at least. The watch does have fast-charging however so that you can get 80% battery in around an hour so, so overnight charging isn’t needed.Overall, I am very happy with this device. It offers a great user experience, great performance and is just a great all-rounder. It has everything I need from fitness applications, music and call management and just looks great. For me this smartwatch was replacing a Pebble Time, so it's definitely a step up, but I'm definitely gonna miss the seemingly unlimited battery life those devices had.Going into the review though, I guess I'll start with the design. I just love the way it looks. I'd say it's the best of both worlds in terms of smartwatches - round like a normal watch should be (unlike some). I have the silicone strap version which blends seamlessly with pretty much whatever I'm wearing and that's quite nice.Wear OS is good for what it needs to be, the 1GB of RAM definitely goes a long way in helping it to keep ticking along and the Google Assistant on your wrist is pretty convenient. The digital crown is a delight to use.I mainly use it for adjusting the volume of media I'm listening to and it's really useful and just outright fun!One thing I did not expect to enjoy as much as I did is definitely NFC. Google pay is really convenient for travel and just general payments - the odd look when I use my watch to pay in shops are quite fascinating! Also the battery modes included by Fossil are useful to get a bit more use out of the watch if you're in a bit of a pinch. A small but very important addition because the battery life otherwise doesn't look particularly impressive. This brings me to my issues with it. First of all the calling feature isn't working very well at the moment. Calls seem to be choppy. The other side can hear clearly but it's tough to make out anything that's being said. Searching online shows Fossil are aware and are planning an update to address it, so that's good news. Also there's a weird ticking sound likely coming from the speaker, hope that can be fixed too.All in all I really enjoy the Fossil Gen 5 and it's definitely one of the best smartwatches out there. Would definitely recommend, you won't be disappointed. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I didn't purchase this watch through amazon, but thought it was worth writing something to help with someone else's decision! The watch overall is fantastic, great build quality, very strong and premium feeling. The included strap has a great finish and certainly isn't one I would immediate swap out.The software is fast and fluid, coming from an older smartwatch with lower specs, it's a breath of fresh air having decent performance from a watch, navigating the menus is slick with generally no freezes at all! I have had some similar issues as other users with Good assistant disconnecting every now and then, that often requires a reboot of my phone or the watch, but it's not often enough to impact me greatly. The hardware buttons are great, I have assigned NFC to the top button and use it a surprising amount more than I thought I would. Paying for items in shops or the pub is super simple, all done without as much as a hand in the pocket! The only negative would be the battery, which for me, lasts just about 2 days on a customised battery mode, where i've turned of GPS, WIFI and the speaker. This generally suits my lifestyle, given the choice, I would like it to run longer, but with the charges being fairly quick and the simplicity of the charging dock, I'm happy with life it gives me. Plus, the option to change to time only mode for much extended life is very welcome. I can certainly see why people do knock it based on the battery life, but it isn't a huge impact to a nightly charger like me!I personally think this was the best smartwatch I could have chosen design and specification wise, I very much would recommend it.

The Fossil Gen 5 is a tremendous smartwatch both in design and functionality. I feel there is just a touch more refinement needed to allow this watch to sit proudly atop the android smartwatch tree.DesignThe Gen 5 would not look out of place in any setting whether it be sports, business or dress to impress. The glossy glass and matt case mean this watch can blend into any environment. A little chunky and not the most comfortable wear, otherwise is just feels like a normal timepiece. The small bump on the bottom to read your vitals can sometimes dig in at the wrong part of your wrist. User friendlinessEasy to set up and easy to navigate, connecting to an android will allow you to make the most of this watch.Apps are a little limited for the WearOS (WhatsApp for example) but I'm sure development is in the pipeline. One gripe for me is that I like to wear it on my right wrist but you can't flip the display so that the crown and function buttons are on the outside. Surely a simple update can fix this?Day to dayNotifications straight to your wrist mean you never miss a thing. Smart tech such as Google Pay are a brilliant innovations. The call quality is poor but I have seen an update due that should resolve this. Sports tracking is brilliant and will record your activity fairly well.Overall, this watch is class leading (for now) but if you want a well built watch with great features to last a couple of years until the technology takes the next leap, this watch will make sure your tech isn't out of date within a month. Smartwatches tend to have some shortcomings, nothing it perfect after all. So with that in mind, I knew there would be compromises with the latest Gen 5 smartwatch from Fossil. But I also knew it had some great features which addressed shortcomings of previous versions on the market: Large batteryBetter chipNice designI used the watch for an extensive period before writing this review. The unit I got had some bugs, crackling when using calls for example. I loaded up the software updates and reset the watch, then set it up again.I'm pleased to say most of the niggles have been ironed out. Battery is good, as in it lasts me a day comfortably with some left over.I never have to put it in battery saving mode which is the last thing you want to do with a smart watch. Texts, whatsapps, emails, all come through on the device meaning I always stay connected. The calls feature is excellent and being able to answer and talk hands free without my phone is excellent. Its clearly in its infancy, a software update was required and its still not perfect, but its getting there. The score of 4 stars takes into account that this is a big step forward, but further software updates and optimisation will make this a 4.5 star watch for sure.Fossil really do seem to be innovative in the watch space, which is great to see. Other manufacturers are going the way of their own OS, but it great to see Fossil pushing out sequels, and attractive ones at that. For anyone who wants an all day Android Wear OS smartwatch, I'd recommend.
