I can remember when I got my first ever manager game. It was Premier Manager '98, and when I first had the premise explained to me on Christmas morning, I couldn't believe how boring it sounded. So you don't even play the game? You just pick the team and watch it? In my infinite wisdom, that all 11 year olds have, I genuinely thought that was the lamest excuse for a plot that a computer game had ever come up with. That game turned out to be one of the most important parts of my life for the next four years.I was hooked, I never even watched the games because I couldn't wait that long to find out if we had won or not. I just switched it to `results'mode and powered through a season in half an hour. That game is now gathering dust somewhere, but since then I have had five other manager games, including LMA manager, Championship Manager, even Alex Ferguson's very own manager game (which wasn't very good.)My most recent acquisition is Football Manager 2007. And although I'm not quite as hooked as I was in the early days of adolescence, it's still amazing how quickly a Sunday afternoon can disappear once I've loaded it up.It is, in my opinion, the best manager game of all time. The emphasis on bringing players through the youth system and nurturing them before they are ready for regular first team action is better than on previous versions. You can no longer just take your star youth team player and make him your first choice striker as, even though his stats may be high, his performances will more than likely be poor until he gets settled into the setup. The training and tactics screens are simpler to use than before, yet if you want to spend time perfecting a set piece or a training schedule then that option is there. Transfers seem pretty realistic, although having never witnessed a real life football transfer go through I couldn't be sure of that. Then there is the pressure of getting your star players to sign long term deals before the bigger clubs come poaching. The in-game menu is better with the 2D screen. In some of the older Championship Manager games there was just text commentary during the game so it was difficult to assess whether your tactics were working. But with the 2D screen this can be clearly seen. I'm sure that in the future it will be a 3D video of the game, but for the moment this is the best option. It gets easier as you get used to the game, and you get to know which players to sign. For example I always went for Nicholas Millan from Colo Colo in Chile, Bojan and Giovani dos Santos from Barcelona and Vincent Kompany from Anderlecht. Well, that was when I was managing a club with some money. Whenever I was my beloved Burnley I didn't have enough money or a high enough reputation for any one of those players, never mind all of them! The only downside with manager games is that, with the constantly moving transfer market, they get outdated very quickly. For example I have only had this game for less than a year and already half of a team's line-up are now no longer at the club. This means that it is a very lucrative business for Sega and Sports Interactive as they can update the same game and do a little bit of tinkering to the game-play and then sell it as a completely new game, knowing that hundreds of thousands of dedicated fans across the world will flock to buy it (me included). In conclusion they're a brilliant series of computer games that football fans everywhere will love, but beware! They are so addictive that I'd put money that people have lost jobs and strained their relationships over Football Manager at some point.I'm yet to upgrade to Football Manager '08 but it's on my birthday wish list.

I have had this game for a little over a month now, and my gameplay hours have already reached 32! Having not owned a manager game since 2003, I thought it was time to try again with a more up to date sim with plenty more features. The game should be classified as a sim, and not a game. If you are a football fan but can't take repeated frustration, then look elsewhere (championship manager). In previous games, the user could just set one formation and get away with it for the rest of the season. Here, however, the formation must first suit the individual players of a squad, and it will take lots of time for the players to get used to it. Once they have, however, any minor change can throw them out completely. For example, if you are leading 1-0 with a 4-4-2 and want to hold on to the lead, there is no point in changing to 5 at the back-they all get confused, and the oppostition will have no trouble scoring an equaliser. Many other small things like this will impact upon the team performance, most notably, morale. A defeat to a poor opposition will greatly drop morale, and the players noticably play with less desire in the next game, and this builds up, a vicious circle, until you can finally record a win. It works in reverse too - if you win a hard match, the fans admire the performance and then you will see the players play with more desire, and the unbeaten run continues. Team talks have also greatly improved. If you choose the anger button, the players will likely take it the wrong way, and the game will be more or less over. However, any encouragement at the right time can really win games for you.Clubs can now be set as feeder clubs, where they give certain promising players in return for money. The training system is fantastic. Once players return from injury, you can decide how intense you would like their training to be. But make it too intense and they may suffer a major injury.Player and manager AI is greatly improved, as is the media aspect of the game. You may compliment other managers before or after a match, or psyche them out, Mourinho style, by making a mind game comment. This again has a suprising, yet realistic effect on the game. Finally, the game is really challenging whoever you decide to manage, yet you as the user can decide any previous playing experience you have had, eg sunday league, or international footballer. Purists would argue it bes to start off lower down and work your way to the top, yet whatever you decide to do, you will realise how realistic this sim is, and you will find yourself playing on it all of the time.Well worth the money, and this game will last you longer than any other.

95% of people who love football are not good enough to play it at any level, and then work commitments are other distractions like injuries, mean our participation in the beautiful game is from the sidelines of our local team. This game is part of a series spanning back to 1993 when Championship Manager first hit the shelves to massive acclaim. The features in this version are just amazing. With 158 playable first team leagues from 51 nations, you have a choice of 2351 teams to manage. That is not including international teams! Whether you like the cut and thrust of LLM (Lower league management) or the national problems a la Sven/Steve McClaren this game will cater for your football managementneeds. The owners use their massive online community to help give suggestions for new features and test the games. Due to the massive amount of code involved the "out of the box" game usually has lots of bugs, meaning the overall 4 stars reflect the fact that you will need to download fixes in "patches" to get rid of these irksome bugs. The good news is the patches are save-game compatible meaning that it fixes around your game rather than having to start over. Both the good and bad thing about the game is the sheer scale of depth. You can take control of youth players from the age of 15 if you wish. You can link up with feeder clubs to give players experience, and have scouting networks stretching across the virtual globe. The media will grill you when you sign a player, before and after every match. You can watch the match in a 2D visual representation, even down to seeing subs warming up on the sidelines. Be warned, getting the tactics right is not easy, and you will not be able to simply put your Macclesfiend team into the Champions League, this game requires real skill and patience. This is football realism gone mad.To get some perspective, one manager even admitted searching the database of his sons FM game to see how good the game rated a certain player he was looking at possibly signing for his club. Because the game programmers have an international network of scouts to assess players abilities young stars such as Fernando Torres, Freddy Adu, and Theo Walcott have been excellent players known to the online communities before they emerged in real life!If you get bored by this game you probably don't like football as much as you thought. You can just pick it up and play if you are not into the huge depth, this game allows you to make it what you please, it is easily and by far the best management simulation on the market by some distance.

Football manager 2007 is more advanced than its previous title '06' and most changes are great, but some are slightly annoying. For instance you can ask for a feeder club or parent club (depending on the size and value of the team you decide to manage) which can be handy for prem teams by sending young starlets on loan to a feeder club to gain experience in a lower league, and also beneficial to a lower league team as your parent club will send you all of thier young hopefuls to gain experience whilst you can gain a good young player for free.*****This is a good thing*****Your board will automatically have restrictions when you start a new game, like, not being a feeder club, where you can and cant send scouts (non prem teams), some clubs will only pay a set price for a players wages even though he is worth so much more which can be very frustrating if you lose him to another club. But for me the most annoying thing about this game is your backroom staff restrictions. The club i managed said i can have a max of 8 full time coaches for both the senior and youth squad, which can be a real pain if some of your coaches are crud and the board wont let you replace them. Other teams can poach your backroom staff very easily, unless you offer them much more than they are worth to stay. Needless to say this brain fart in the game makes training players to a world class level really tough.***** BAD BAD BAD *****Player interaction is a great addition to the game where you can ask a player for advise on new signings or backroom staff (if you can sign them) that he would believe to be a good addition to the club. Plus you can give players with low morale a boost before kick off by declaring you have faith in their ability at the team talk window. ***** cool *****With vast player databases and countless leagues for you to manage in, in loads of countries it can be really hard to stay focused on one game.Much of the game remains the same and its user friendly approach to gamers still shines through. If you own FM2006, well FM2007 is more advanced and challenging, if you dont own either and like management games then this really should be on your shopping list.If you do decide to buy it then i hope you enjoy it as much as i do.P.S be ready to yell at the screen when your beloved club gets thrashed by a team 2 leagues below you.....AAARGHHH.

It's been a while since I've played a football management game. Back in day, I played champ manager 2 and it was a lot of fun, although i was probably too young back then (12) to appreciate a lot of the things you can do. Recently, I tried playing Championship Manager 2006 and thought it was very good and I tried the demo of CM2007 and thought it was slightly better. But then, I learnt that the original CM team moved over to Football Manager, and so eventually I ended up getting FM2007. Within minutes of playing this game, I thought it blew CM2006/7 out of the water. It's just by far a better, more complete game than its rival.SI have done a great job and the interactions between yourself and other managers, players and media is something that is very lifelike. It's also something that is missing from Championship Manager 2007. The scouting system on FM is also a lot better and simpler to use than that of CM, as is the training system. Also, the way your players develop and the way they are valued is far more realistic than in CM. Signing players is also more realistic (which also makes for a harder game). I realised that on CM, as long as you had enough money, you could pretty much sign anyone you want. This is not the case of FM. As in real life, some players just refuse to leave their club for whatever reason. I also particularly like the interactions between players (i.e. Which personnel a particular player might be partial towards). Again, it's something that is true to life and can influence your team choices. For example, i have 4 centre backs on my first team who are pretty much as good as each other, however, Agger and Paletta are on each other's favourite personnels list and Kompany and Schmoller are on their respective lists also. Hence, whenever possible, I rotate Agger/Paletta with Kompany/Schmoller.I have heard criticism that all these new fine details make the game harder to play, that it might be a little overwhelming. I might have agreed at first, but once you settle in to it, these fine details do nothing except make your game more interesting. With plenty to do and try, and as realistic as football management sims get, FM2007 will take over your life as it has mine!

This is perhaps the most time consuming game known to man. Many hours are spent lovingly on crafting the ultimate team and leading it to glory. Spent on transforming a team from a midget into a giant. Simulation game it may be but it is as real as pain to many addicts. But why spend hours and hours on end trying to create an all-conquering team when you can just watch Man United destroy teams in a blink of an eye in real life, I hear you ask. Well, I think it's time you found out...The 3rd instalment of the Football Manager series has entered in truly magnificent fashion. It has now added many new features which have been so craved by the countless addicts (fans). The main feature is affiliates or feeder teams which provide you with merchandising income as well as the opportunity to loan out your young guns for some much needed first team experience. The new features add even more pleasure to your gaming-which was previously though to be impossible-with little touches everywhere which elevate it to an all new height. The interface has improved, the tactics board has improved, the news items have improved and even the scouting has gone up a notch! The database still continues to amaze addicts and the match engine has become slightly better. Many rather brainless critics have wondered aloud why there is till an inconspicuous lack of 3D players on the pitch. But when the 2D circles look that good it seems pointless to use up even more memory on 3D figures. That said, the game has it's downsides as all games do.The biggest problem-though it's not altogether that big a problem-is that it takes quite a long time to load and continue with the game depending on how large your databases and how many leagues you have loaded. Another niggling problem is the continued lack of any real sound effects. There are some crowd noises during matches but that is rather more of a nuisance than anything else.A couple of very minor problems aside, this is possibly the best game out this year with its strength in depth and immersive gameplay. As the late, great Bill Shankly once said `People say that football is a matter of life and death, but it's much more important than that!' Amen.

If you are a football fan like me and like a bit of gaming here and there aswell, then this is possibly the perfect game for you. If you have a half the amount of intrest in football in comparison to a hardcore fan, then this will be an alright game for you. If you are not intrested in this product... well why you are looking at this product? Unless you are getting it for someone as a present.Anyway, this is a great game for addicts of soccer, basically giving them the chance of how football management should be done on a spreadsheet. Sound put off. Well don't be. As this has a huge database ranging from the likes of Manchester United's first team to some rubbish team like Bath City's youth squad that is how huge the database is.The two dimesional matches are impressive and realistic at comparing tactics and team sheets against each other, for example Manchester City's reserves vs Cardiff City depending on how poor Man C's team is or how good Cardiff's team is, the match will give a realistic scoreline. There are more new features in this game as you now can talk and interact with other players to build a bond or interact and develop a parent/feeder relationship between clubs. Scout reports are better telling you what tactics your next oppositon will be likely to use against you and give you a huge report card on players you told him to look out for. The media simulation has improved with journalists asking you on to comment on upcoming fixtures or post match interviews on players and contreversial decisions by referees."Think like a manager" is what is says on the box and once you or the person you are buying it for you will start thinking like a manager. Trust me as I say it is yet an another great sequal from Sports Interactive and Sega. After playing this game the beautiful game will be even more beautiful.

Now I've played this game for many hours each day and this equates to alot of days sat behind the laptop playing this game. For a start once you get a good team going the game in insanely addictive, if your team is doing badly, yes I admit it is very annoying but just look out for some free transfers that could change the team around! It is complex but this just adds to what a real manager would have to do. Anyway you can set your assistant to do some of this things like organise friendlies and manage reserves. It really helps to sort out Tactics and Takers before the season starts so you get the best people doing the best thing from the beginning.Make sure you pay attention to your scouts as they may be able to spot a superstar at a young age and you can snap him up quickly! In this game you can haggle with the board and demand certain things like, upgarde youth facilities, demand more money, ask for a bigger stadium and become a Feeder or Parent club. Now before any of you think that this is my first manager game and I'm hyping this up, I'm not. I've played Total Club Manager 2004 for many a year and also Club Manager 2006 so I know that this game is one of the cream of the crop! For the current price how can anyone resist! There are some ways that the user can alter the game and even create their own team and change the rosters if they want in FM Editor. This way you can have the current teams and maybe tweak some of the players for the game. The match mode is simple, just little dots running arounf a field. You get to give half-time talks and pre-match comments to the opposing manager. I personally have a massive fued with all the top 3 clubs (Chelsea, Arsenal, Man U). Just bear in mind that there is talent out there that can make your team unbeatable. A fantastic game once get a good team! 5/5

I have been playing the champ manager series since it all began and I can state after only twelve hours of play that they are now getting as close to perfection as a game of its type can. Football manager 2007 is vast, but none of the detail is wasted. Every attribute can be seen in the way the player moves and plays during a game. The tactics you choose are for the most part followed, and the subtle changes you can make when things aren't going the way you hoped can make a difference. Of course sometimes they don't always close down like you may have asked them to, sometimes the defensive line may not be where you had wished, but how many real managers must face the same frustrations sometimes. The feeder clubs are a great way of bringing on youth, and it is a good addition to the last version. I haven't had much to do with parent clubs yet but that is about to change as West Brom, the team I just won the championship with (107 points no less), have, without consulting me, just taken on AC Milan. The main reason to buy this version and not just stick with your 2006 version is the matches themselves. The play is much more realistic. Chances were on 2006 that if you were watching the highlights and the opposition were in position you just held your breath knowing that they were gonna get a pop at your goal. Not now though, players spill the ball much more frequently, possession switches and you never know whose highlight your watching until you see that flashing bar.I love this game, its not perfect but football isn't. At the end of the day you are a manager not god and that is what makes it fun. Somewhere in the minimum requirements it should state you need an understanding girlfriend because chances are she isn't going to be seeing much of you over the next few months.

At last the long awaited Football Manager 2007 is out :)Well i even thought they would just bring something like FM06 but boy was i wrong. The game even seems to be quicker to play,There is alot of tweaks to the game they have made and makes the game even more enjoyable.I managed to play the demo for a while and was very very inpressed with the new layout. The new feeder club feature is a great addition to the FM series, Maybe if you could have longer loans to get Eu passports for non EU players would be good addition in the next series, it does allow you to loan players from BIG clubs.I am Oxford in the conference and my feeder club is Portsmouth so i can loan "some" of there reserve team,Dont get me wrong you wont get a "Andrew Cole" but you may get a player that could just give you the edge in the league. This is one of the new options that takes the game to the next level and should hopefully add to the excitment and life of the game. The "new" tactics now have a more effect on the games, it is now possible to turn games around by changing formation.Unlike the old versions it is now possible to play conservatively without getting hammered. There is better in-depth scouting reports, You can send scouts to watch the next opponents.Pre-match teams talks, media questions, after game interviews.**NEW**Player interaction - You can ask him who he thinks would be a good signing either player or coach.Board Takeovers - As in real life your club could become a target for a takeover, They may give you money, or they may want you to step down.Feeder clubs - As mentioned above you can get or be a feeder club, You can get some quality player on loan or send out your "hot prospects" out on loan. You can even have your own manager pictire :)

I have been loyal to Championship Manager ever since Champ Man 2, I have bought every instalment since with the occasional purchase of other titles just to compare and always ended being drawn back to the Champ Man series. it was in a league of its own, and I do mean WAS!Last year I purchased Football Manager 2006 mainly because the Champ Man title wasn't due out for another 2 months or so. I thought SI splitting from Eidos would have been a bad idea and expected this to be just like all the others that paled in comparison to Champ Man. But I found myself hooked straight away and managed to take Leyton Orient into the champions league ha-ha impossible you may think but i managed it after a long time, that's how hooked I was! When the champ man title was released, due to my loyalty to the Champ Man series i rushed to get it to see how it would measure up, I was disappointed at best at how it had taken not 1 step back but 9 or 10 steps back at least and found myself struggling to finish a season, I found it boring and lacking in every way to Football Manager 2006.having played the Demo of Football Manager 2007 and I can say I am more than impressed with the new features, and eagerly awaiting the release of the full version. I have played the Champ Man 2007 Demo available and was bitterly disappointed again by a gaming title that WAS so impressive. It is clear to see who were the brains behind the addictive Champ Man series of the past!Championship Manager is the Godfather, the Don Vito Corleone of Football Management games but Football Manager appears to be the Michael Corleone, set to take over the mantle of Best Football Management Sim and become the new Godfather!

OK, so it quite simply won't work if you aren't a football fan. This is mainly for those who take at least some interest in the game. Those who do will be treated thoroughly by this delight of a game.Firstly, the database. It's huge. Incredible. Every statistic accurate to the finest letter. Every club you could ever want to manage.Gameplay is also extraordinary. You really feel in control of your club in this game. There are so many options to sink your teeth into. New features, such as "Feeder clubs" and a new scouting engine, also keep those who bought the previous versions entertained.Realism is excellent. It never borders on the ridiculous, and winning a game 9-0 or beating Chelsea really feels like an achievement because of this. The match engine has been kept how it was, in my opinion, for the better. A 3D engine would take up too much loading time, so this feels fairly traditional, and it keeps you interested.Speaking of loading times, these can often be a downer in these sort of games. Well, FM have even thought of how to counter that. They now have "Detail Levels", so you can choose less matches played in full, to speed up your game. But for any football fan, this really is such an addictive game. You get hooked so quickly, and end up loving the work you created. One final note about an extra feature: The Editor. They've revamped it so it isn't a full-screen program. Brilliant, you can update your team accurately, or even experiment with the game. I tried Chelsea in League 2.So in summary, buy it. This is a genuinely brilliant game for any football fan of any age. You will not regret buying this item.

I have been playing the demo for a few days and managed to get a look at an early copy of the full version yesterday and on first impressions it looks like SI have finally brought the FM series to the level of perfection that they managed with CM2001/02. The new feeder club feature is not perfect but does offer extra depth, it would be nice if you could set longer loans though (to get Eu passports for non EU players) but it does allow you to clear out reserves and youth players you can't give games to. It is the introduction of full youth teams and a new program (named FRED) which creates new youth players that takes the game to the next level and should hopefully add to the lifespan of the game. Also the tactics now have a more visable effect on the games,it is now possible to turn games around by changing formation and unlike previous versions it is possible to play conservatively without getting punished. So it is possible to go on a good run of form, in previous versions 4-0 wins could often be followed by 'surprise' defeats to smaller teams. However there are some major bugs in the game, including the deadly 'tactic reset' bug from both FM05 and FM06. This is where your defender's instructions are reset after a change of tactics and they end up conceding goals because the game has made them man mark opposition defenders or form the wall instead of man marking opposing strikers like you asked, you might end up throwing your monitor out the window with frustration if this cost you a game! So I would wait for the patch before starting a career game.

FM 2006 was a superb game but it simply took over my life. I literally had to throw it away to get off it. SO addictive. I would lie in bed and 2:00am and start wondering asbout how I was going to turn things around at my club. Who to buy. Who to sellThe attention to detail was brilliant. I honestly believe about as realistic as you could ever hope to get. I do agree in that the A.I at other clubs in terms of transfers was a bit naff. For example after 7 years Man Utd would still be playing a 37 year old Ruud and a 39 year old Paul Scholes. It did seem the A.I. let other teams decay. I hope this is fixed so other clubs kept re-vamping their teams? Now onto FM 2007. All thes improvements. Can only make a great game better? Well, I hope so. In the past they hav tended to tinker for tinkering sake and actually some of the latter versons were not as good.I love the idea of an improved youth system. I loved taking over small clubs and trying to bring together a brilliant team from the youth. Not for me was taking over chelsea and spending £200 million every summer on he very best players. I wanted to do it the "proper" old fashioned AJAX, Ipswich Town way. Bring a great team from the youth and win one of the major trophies. OK so you have to keep selling your top players and re-doing it..but that's the fun. So I am really glad they have looked at this side of the game. Will I buy FM 2007? Prabably. But I'll have to limit my-self to 1 hour a day tops. No chance :-)Looks great. Time will tell. But if it is 5% better than FM 2006 it is a massive winner.

I used to play Champ Man 01/02 back at uni so much, and whilst I have fond memories of it, if played now would be frustrating to the point of anger. That's because each subsequent edition of Football Manager has kept adding new features and new ways of doing things, to keep things interesting. It isn't 5 star fun because it requires a lot of time and effort, and like real football, the results will rarely go your way. It takes a long time to discover how to and how not to do things which means you will restart this game time and time again, as you will keep wanting to try something new.I bought this in spite of owning FM2006, and I think it justifies itself. It has a better interface, and the features that have been added just make it more engaging as a whole. In response to the reviewer citing his efforts with Tottenham, it's never going to be 100% accurate as it relies on numbers and statistical chances to determine outcomes. Also, in real life, there isn't a universal database to compare players "stats" or quickly shortlist your favourite players. Tottenham currently have a good side, they're just not achieving their potential when it matters. Why wouldn't they have a huge budget if they won the uefa cup twice on the trot and the champs league the season after? Besides, it's a game at the end of the day so what do you expect?Fan of the series? Buy it. Fan of football, give it a go, find out what all the fuss is about.
