Our household has been eagerly awaiting the release of the Octonauts toys and we were surprised at how quietly they snuck onto the market. Originally scheduled for release of 8/8 (in keeping with the "Octo" theme) we discovered their low key release quite by accident via Facebook last week. The GUP A is bigger than expected and comes with various bits and pieces, including our little one's favourite, the angler fish. Having the front and back open is perfect for loading up for missions and the detail inside the GUP is fantastic, even including a little sink. The GUP moves fairly well on hard surfaces (namely our coffee table) and reasonably in the bath after a little push, but is prone to capsize in the water, more than likely due to it's size and weight. This doesn't bother our little one who simply sees this as an opportunity for an Octonaut rescue mission, but considering one of the main objectives of this particular toy is to be used in water it falls a little short of the mark.Luckily, the GUP is well designed and can be throughly drained of water without problems, essential to avoid the horrible black mould that can accumulate in bath toys. The most frustrating part for us as parents has been having the little one handing us the GUP over and over again asking for the front windscreen to be re-attached as it seems to come off very easily. This lets the GUP down as otherwise it is durable and well designed. That aside, the GUP is providing great fun and entertainment for the little one which, at the end of the day, is the most important thing.

This toy arrived for my 5 year old today, together with a Gup-D. On balance, this is the better value of the two.It lends itself well to imaginary play because both the front and back halves open up - the back revealing a control panel and 'tank' to put rescued animals. You can fit two or three of the characters in the Gup. Much Octo-fun to be had there :-)It comes with a Captain Barnacles in a red jump suit. I wasn't sure about that because he never wears this in the series, but my kids didn't care. The character toys are nicely proportioned and pose-able and my daughter played with these more than the Gup!You can wind it up for it to move along on the ground or in the bath but, in fairness,it's a bit big and heavy for this to work properly. It performed quite well in the bath but if you jiggled it around too much, it capsized. I think younger kids may get a little frustrated with this. It was reasonably easy to shake out the water - essential to avoid black mould ruining the toy.The front hatch comes off quite easily, but is easy to re-attach. Not 100% sure if it will last the distance, but overall the toys seem well made.At the end of the day, though, a good stab at the essential range of toys for Octo-fans everywhere...

I was initially put-off the Fisher Price Octonauts toys by their appearance in the photos and, to an extent, how they appear on the shelf. However, I saw a few of these toys out-of-the-box at a children's party and I started to change my mind - that along with my three year old daughter, M, being Octonauts crazy!Basically, these feel more substantial and well thought out in-the-hand than the photos do justice. They are made from good quality materials, feel robust, and there are neat little touches such as the permanently printed-on decals that make the Gup-A and it's sister subs suitable for bath time play. The Gup-A is my, and M's, favourite. Of all the Fisher Price Octonauts toys, this one most closely captures the look and spirit of the on-screen version - it has space for two Octonauts in the cockpit and another two in the cozy lab quarters at the back. Wind the propeller up and it also chugs along in the water, or do the same on dry land and the propeller steadily churns away at pleasingly similar speed to the on screen version.Of all the Fisher Price Gups, it would seem this is the one that the company put the most effort into getting 'right', and they succeeded.

Bought one for my four year old son who is currently mad on the Octonauts.I was pleasantly suprised when I picked it up and saw how big it was. It's nice and chunky, with good detailing (you can open the back hatch and see a little sink, bath etc.) The commanding Captain Barnacles is in a racey red diving suit with flippers (although I have yet to see wear this on the show - and believe me, I've seen them all!) You can make Barnacles stand in the driving position, and there's space next to him for one of the other Octonauts. It also came with a couple of attachments that you put in the front (not quite sure what they do!) and a net etc, although I did put these aside as we would have lost them in about 15 seconds in our house. My only complaint is that the front windscreen comes off about every ten minutes (a bit like Happyland doors) Actually, two complaints - you can't get Peso, Dashi (which my daughter wants) and the Gup C Rescue Sub.Still, my son loves it, which is what counts!

My two and a half year old loves all things Octonauts at the moment. At Christmas he noticed no other presents. This gup was a firm favourite to take off shelves at the shops. So our resolution to get him no big toys went out the window. He was surgically attached to gup B for weeks, now he needs (!) to carry the whole set with him everywhere. The gup A is correctly reviewed here, the 'motor' does nothing in the water, the front window falls off constantly (or it did all Christmas, it has since mysteriously vanished...). But the kids love it, and that's all we care about. It has the added bonus of fitting in lots of the octonauts, so everyone has a seat.So go ahead and buy it!PS My parents keep repeating what good quality plastic these toys are made of... I can only say that with two boisterous boys and many hours in the bath, the toys are not broken and even the odd missing fish or lid turns up somewhere.PPS I really really want gup x now...

My daughter loves the Octonauts and this was the first Octonaut toy she received in Christmas 2011. Since then she has wanted to increase her octonaut toys at subsequent birthdays and christmas. She plays with all of them almost every day, playing out stories similar to those on CBeebies or creating new ones of her own.As a product it is great so I give it full marks. However, buying the Octonauts can be an expensive business, particularly as some have decided that the individual characters are "collectables" rather than toys. However, after some unsuccessful (and potentially expensive) forays on an auction site,we got lucky by visiting toy shops regularly and picking up what we could when we saw it and saving it until the special days.It is also disappointing that with the vehicles, you only get the choice of Barnacles or Kwazii and not the others.

Got one of these for my 3 year old son today. He's a massive Octonauts fan so it's gone down well with him and he has enjoyed playing with the Gup A and Barnacles / Angler Fish. We got him a Kwazi as well but stopped short on anything else as we'd already been quite generous for an ad hoc (non birthday / Chrimbo) gift anyway. He loves it but I'm not wholly convinced that the price matches up to the durability of the Gup and it will be interesting to see how long it lasts with some mainly water-based play.[P.S. Didn't actually wait the 1 - 4 months quoted on amazon and picked one up in Toys R Us today. The range is in most big (and little)toy shops now so not sure why the wait is so long on this site...]

I am really pleased with this product, and more importantly, my children love it! Often TV tie-in products do not live up to expectations (take note Peppa Pig merchandisers!) but these Octonaut toys are great. My children (aged 5 and 3) love the fact they can be played with in and out of the bath and all the little gadgets work well. They are fairly simple toys but that adds to the appeal in my opinion.I have seen these sold for wildly varying prices so look closely for the best price (usually Amazon). They don't seem to have brought out toys for all the characters yet but perhaps they will in due course.Thumbs up!

We bought this for my 3 year old boy who is a massive Octonaut fan, and we thought this would be the toy he would get the most from. And he does! He loves putting his Octonaut figues in it (and anything else that he can fit in with it too). It definitely encourages him to use his imagination and invent rescue missions. The only problem we have found, like everyone else reviewing this toy, is that the front windscreen does get annoying the way it keeps coming off. If the hinge had been sturdier, it would of received 5 stars.

My son got a load of Octonaut stuff from Santa, but this one by far is his favourite. He LOVES it more than any other GUP we bought. It is very sturdy and in no way flimsy or breakable which makes it worth every penny. My 5 year old carries this GUP around the house and even brings it in the bath. It has a propeller you can wind up and it swims a little in the bath. To see how happy my son is with this makes it worth the price.***If you found this review helpful, just click the HELPFUL button below!***

We bought this for our son, who is nearly 3, as an xmas present. Just the right size for satisfying play, the parts seem well made, not too brittle and the Barnacles included is chunky enough to withstand all they are put through! Both front and back sections can hinge off and the vehicle seems well designed for toddlers and older children alike. Pleased with this. We got Kwazi Kitten separately and there is room in the Gup for him too. The fact this can go in the bath too is a great bonus

Received the Gup this morning and almost couldn't get my 3 year old out the door to nursery! He Loves it already. You can wind it up and it travels along the floor. You can also play with it in the bath!My son loves anythign to do with the Octonauts so this toy was always going to be a winner. The only disadvantage I can see is that I don't believe it will take long for the lid to get snapped off....we shall see.....

In addition to the Octopod set, we purchased this one and were very pleased. These toys are great for my daughter when she is saving the sea creatures. These vehicles can even go in the bath or pool (we have done both!). One word of caution, if you take it to the pool, be very careful the clear plastic cockpit piece doesn't come off, or you may not find it! Love, love, love these toys!

20.7.2020

Hurrah! An Octonauts toy that can *actually* be used in the bath!My sons (5 and 3) are Octonaut fans and love it! Accessories are basic and the perspex "windscreen" keeps detaching and needs "a grown up" to assist with re-fitting, but overall it's a well-received bath toy.Afraid I can't comment on its performance on dry land as it has a purely aquatic life in our home!

4.1.2012

My son (aged 4) chose to buy this with some Christmas money he was given. The Octonauts is basically all he talks about so this purchase has gone down very nicely. A great toy, lots of fun had with it so far. Only four stars though as the 'windscreen/window' is hinged and doesn't seem too robust so not sure how much play this will stand up to.
