Twenty-two years ago, me and my younger brother were introduced to FINAL FANTASY VII (1997). On our first plays, we couldn't get past the first boss! However, we realize that it was a different type of computer game (Role-Playing Game) and, over time, got use to playing it. While this was the seventh entry in the FINAL FANTASY franchise, FFVII was the game that brought even more people's attention to the games outside Japan. Regarded as one of the greatest games of all time, FFVII spawned a number of spin-off games and a couple of straight-to-home animated films. Some jaded viewer would probably see a remake of the game as another excuse of the creators milking out a beloved existing material. However, for years, fans had pleaded to Square Enix about making a remake. It officially enter production in late-2015, and after more than five years in the making, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE was released. One thing that surprised everyone was that this game actually covers 10 to 15% of the original, from the attack on the Shinra Mako reactor all the way to the escape from Shinra headquarters. So, there's no appearances from Cid, Vincent nor Yuffie (though Cait Sith makes a cameo!).If there's one comparison to Square Enix's path they're taking with the FFVII remake (as a series of games), then that's another Japanese entertainment that took the country and the rest of the world by storm in the latter half of the 1990's, the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION saga (1995-1997). Roughly a decade after the original series ended, Hideaki Anno decided to re-tell his magnum opus with THE REBUILD OF EVANGELION tetralogy of films - EVA 1.0 (2007) was a partial remake of the first six episodes of the anime, EVA 2.0 (2009) began to take the saga into new territory, which continued even further with EVA 3.Q (2012) and will concluded with the upcoming EVA 3.0 + 1.0.And I think that's what Square Enix are planning to do with the FFVII remake series, this game more or less remakes the first one-tenth of the original, while at the same time taking the story into a new direction. While playing this, I was just impress of the hard work the developers brought to this game, and I kind of like the different missions we had - for example, Jessie, Biggs & Wedge, Barrett's assistants, are given more backgrounds. It was kind of strange hearing the voices of Cloud, Tifa, Aerith and Barrett, but the voice-actors do very decent jobs. Those four-plus years of making the highly-anticipated game did not go to waste.Another thing to point out is that this is no way going to replace the original. The original, that was produced for PSOne, will always have a place in the history of video games and availability. And if they are some fans who don't want to play the FFVII Remake because they are so passionate about the original, then they don't have to.My younger brother is going hold his judgement on the overall series until Square Enix completes their FFVII remake games, but for me, I'm very impress of what they've done with this first game. All they have to do is maintain the spirit that made the original game so beloved, improve on certain things and continue taking the remake series down a road that will make stand alongside the PS1 classic. Good luck, everyone at Square Enix!Reviewer: Ben David W

Final Fantasy VII Remake is something of an enigma. For starters, it's not in any way shape or form a remake. It takes the first maybe five hours of the original and stretches it out to make something that is altogether different. This is both a blessing and a curse. It allows for the supporting cast to be fleshed out much more, especially the other members of Avalanche, which really adds something to the story. However, it also, means that there are quite a few filler side quests that probably didn't need to be in there. On the whole though the game benefits from the extra time you get to spend in Midgar. The battle system takes some getting used to but on the whole is an improvement on the original, giving it a more immediate actiony feel. I was sceptical at first but doing some stabbing while you wait for your meter to fill up for the big attacks does work well. The only downside is that your AI companions ATB bars go up incredibly slowly when you're not controlling them so you have to switch constantly between characters to be effective. It goes without saying that the graphics, music and voice acting is exceptional. There are occasional texture issues but they are far enough apart that it didn't affect the game for me.Overall, this is a fantastic reimagining of arguably the best console game of all time. I only hope we don't have to wait twenty odd years for the next instalment.

Firstly I’d like to say, ignore all those who are slating this for being linear. Anyone who fondly remembers the original psx version should know that the Midgar part of the game was linear. You had no other option but to follow the plot till leaving Midgar. So if you you played the original, you know what to expect. But boy do you get a lot more story! The extra detail and content that the developers have included is remarkable. There are some inconsistencies with how the original played out, and even some dialogue discrepancies where I don’t see a reason for changing (the flashback scene where Tifa curses Shinra for one),It’s not as if the original was full of swearing. The combat is tricky to begin with but soon you get the hang of it and it becomes very intuitive and responsive, having the extra materia later game helps.Speaking of materia, I love that they kept the materia system basically the same. Some new additions to aid with the new combat style as well as the old favourites. Wasn’t too happy at the restricted blue materia, but I suppose there wasn’t much available in the OG Midgar. Also love how the weapons are not made redundant as soon as you buy the next one along. The buster sword is still viable to use in the last battle as it is the first. All in all a superb first episode. I really hope they don’t make the rest into a cash cow and try to charge £40/50 per episode.

Firstly I'll address a common issue people seem to have. This game does not cover the entire story of the original Final Fantasy 7. It is a remake, (not to be confused with a "remastered" version as some reviews seem to fall into). If you want to play the original game with better graphics, then I'd suggest you look at a modded version of the PC game.I played the original version as a child, and have played most of the games within the larger series, so understand the history and the style of the games. It takes 30 - 40 hours to complete a single play through of this game. The game is not open world, rather it has set maps which are highly detailed and full of nuance, rather than generic open maps. The combat is an interesting mixture of action and turn-based, which I found to be quite intuitive. The graphics are largely impressive, unless the character in question is an NPC/non-story character. At which point, the animation, acting, etc, seems to drop off a bit. The trade off is that the important characters are really fleshed out. Biggs, Wedge and Jessie (3 fairly minor characters from the original), now have some substance and give you a reason to care.Soundtrack, as ever with FF games, is fantastic. A large amount of the original score remains, but tweaked and updated.Overall, I enjoyed the game, I would recommend it and I am excited for the next game.

After waiting years and years for the remake of one of my favourite games I can honestly say I wasn't disappointed. It's not an exact replica of the original but then what would the point in that be? Instead this adds depth to the characters and story and allows you to explore and enjoy the amazing scenery. The designers clearly put a lot of time, effort and soul into this game and it shows.I haven't finished it yet, probably about a third of the way through, but it has been a pleasure to play and I just hope that it doesn't take as long for part 2 to be released! For those moaning that it only goes as far as Midgar, yes it isn't the whole game, but the depth and detail that has been put into this section alone means that you couldn't possibly expect them to fit the original into one game, it wouldn't do it justice. As for the combat system I have to be honest I was worried about this. I have always preferred the original turn based system and I was worried I wouldn't keep up with the new one (I didn't get on with FF15) but it's actually easy once you've done a few battles and I actually prefer it now so don't let that put you off.I would highly recommend this game for old fans and new players alike and I look forward to the next part.

This has lost 1 star not because of the game as the game itself is a full FIVE STARS, the cover is too big for the case and so looks a right mess, as if its been wet, just crumpled inside the slip case. For that reason I returned it and will wait for it to be sorted as its a common problem. Now, down to the game, I put in around 5 hours before sending it back and graphically it is amazing, and great voice acting to go with the characters I loved playing as a kid on the original. One of my favourite FF games and even games as a kid.Adds more depth to the story of midgar from Disc 1, yes we know its not a complete game and they will charge for the others but they have rebuilt the game from the ground and this is around 40 hours of gameplay, even more if you want platinum. So ignore all the haters when we knew it was only Midgar, its not half a game its part 1 of a game thats been rebuilt with brilliant graphics. The gameplay is different from the original obviously as its now fully 3D and new fighting style, if its too hard you can change it to the original way (kind of) where it focuses more on gameplay than fighting. If your a huge fan of the original then you will be happy with this and story reflects it too

I have waited along time for final fantasy 7 to get an uplift and I have to admit that they have done a superb job in my opinion.Final fantasy 7 was the first RPG that i played and throughly enjoyed, it had fantastic gameplay, engaging music and a brilliant storyline and with the remake they have been able to keep what the original made great in the remake. My only slight negative would be with the added action RPG style rather than the turn based style I loved in the original but that is only my opinion as I know many others enjoy more action RPG’s today.Graphics: Are absolutely amazing and really draws you into the game and the storyline.5/5Gameplay: even though I’ve mentioned I preferred the original turned based style I have still thoroughly enjoyed the action element they have added although the camera angels can be difficult to control and sometimes loose tract of where the enemies are.4/5Music: This they have stayed true to the original and is extremely good and blends in with the story and gameplay seamlessly.5/5Can’t wait for the next chapter in this series!

I loved final fantasy. I was 10 years old when I originally played final fantasy 7. I’ve been looking at the reviews and thought oh crap, this is gonna be awful but it’s the complete opposite. This game storyline had a few tweaks but it was absolutely amazing. I feel in love with many of the characters and found myself heart broken with a few characters in the game dying (not spoiling). I spent my time going through this game and not rushing to complete it. The quests are fun, the engagement is fantastic. Even the battle system is amazing. I often let Tifa to be my team leader, because why not? Needless to say I love the Turks who are funny. This game has so much potential and none of it was wasted.I love the graphics, the game play.. pretty much everything. I cannot wait for the second instalment; I am sooo excited that I cannot contain my excitement. Worth the buy. 100%

Bought a PlayStation 4 and 70% of the reason was just to get this game and have not been disappointed. Hearing the music again but much clearer sound and seeing the graphics has been a real pleasure and the humour matches my personality it’s been great. There has been one negative which nearly all developers need to improve on and that’s when walking past people they repeat conversations like when standing next to them on the train to talk to an important character.Buy if you enjoyed the original still get this as you see things never shown which paints a clearer image of Shinra, extra story mission’s to complete also.I wasn’t sure about the transition with battle from turned based strategy to live battles but the combat is supreme.Well worth the cost, thoroughly enjoy!!! Great developers.

This by far exceeded my expectations. I am a long running fan of Final Fantasy and the original FFVII was my gateway into this franchise.Back in 1996 FFVII blew my young mind and has stood as my favourite game ever since (I must have racked up over 600 hours in all). This remake is Part One and only covers upto the end of the Midgar part (which despite reviews moaning about this, Square made it very clear from the first announcement that this would be the case and the remake would be released in parts). If you are a fan of FFVII then you need this. For me it was like reuniting with old friends and the new game play and mechanics have vastly improved on the original while also expanding theback store of much loved characters.

In every sense of the word, for an FF, this game boasts so many new features. The battle synergy literally redefines RPG play while simultaneously giving you nostalgia from the original. The game is really foreboding and if you are a fan of the original please dont expect everything to be exactly as it was before.Stubborn oxes need not purchase. Theres a fan made remake of Final Fantasy on steam if you want to reply that. I think after 20 years, there would be those who would get sad about playing the same game again, word for word, but it appears to me that there are also some people with undiagnosed autism.Such themes in this game would be displeasing to the unimaginative. Anyway,I'm gonna go play Persona 5 now. Peace

Considering the issues that plagued the game in development and its lack of progress the game appears better than expected although there are noticeable corner cuts. Whilst some graphics are breathtaking others are phoned in (windows of rusted building in sector 5 jeez). And yes the game is not a true remake, the title is misleading in this regard, and yes the game is linear and not as explorative as it's predecessor but all the same it's great seeingthe characters we remember come back to life. I'm sure the series will develop and adjust accordingly. The world map is yet to be introduced and I'm sure that will offer the jrpg fan boys a little mor juice.Either way a good throwback with improved fighting.Worth a play

The original is probably my favorite game of all time, I must have completed it well over a dozen times. Owned it on all consoles its available on so was looking forward to this. The delays were quiet annoying but when I played the demo I could see how much work had gone in to the game to give it a modern and refreshing feel. Visually stunning and entertaining. I'm currently only on chapter 3 (around 2 hours in to the game) but really enjoying it. I know this is just the midgar section of the original game and I am curious to how the next part will play out with so much left from the original. Hopefully it will be faithful to the original in terms of areas and story.Overall its a must for fans of the original

I played final fantasy 7 on my PSP a long time ago. I enjoyed the original and was looking forward to playing the remaster.I will preface by saying it is about 1/4 of the original games story. The story is way more fleshed out which is brilliant. The combat has evolved from turn based to more action with slow downs to use skills. Once I figured out the mechanics I had a blast and became really engaged I wanted more combat in the game tbh and felt like that was lacking. My biggest problem was the ending boss rush. I spent at least an hour doing these 3 bosses in a row I failed right at the end which made me stop playing.I would still get this game it is worth your time and was really good until the end.

I love this game, taking from someone that's just completed it, the music in game is so beautiful and fantastic and the story only covers midgar and I'm glad it does because it expands the lore and mystery in midgar with no padding. So much character development the characters are very faithful to the original game and the places from the original are faithfully recreated in the remake, the negative reviews the games has isn't fair their just not happy it doesn't have the full game in it which wasn't possible anyway it would miss full sections of the original game if it was, the remake took me 63 hours to complete so it is a full complete more than worth it game,I just can't wait for part 2.
