Right, I'll try to keep this short and sweet. I'm a FIFA man, rather than one of these Pro Evolution sorts, and I've just a few hours ago bought 2006 FIFA World Cup on PS2 to add to the vast FIFA collection. There don't seem to be many reviews of this game on the internet, so I bought this game not really knowing what to expect, and I was particularly concerned that it wouldn't be much different from FIFA 2006.I have been pleasantly surprised to see that 2006 FIFA World Cup isn't a carbon copy of FIFA 06. Having said that, there are a lot of similarities, which is hardly surprising, seeing as there aren't all that many differences between each year's installment of FIFA. To keep it brief, the following is a list of things (off the top of my head, and that I can remember!) which make 2006 FIFA World Cup different from FIFA 06:1. The gameplay itself does seem a bit more fluid; it doesn't seem quite so rigid as previous FIFAs, and - in the five games I've play thus far - the goals you can score are slightly more interesting and less predictable. The shooting has been improved insofar as you have more control over where the ball is going to end up. The most noticeable improvement in the gameplay, I think, is in the crossing - much less rigid than in FIFA 06. Heading also seems to be a bit less predictable. So that's a slight improvement! (Nevertheless, the game controls/moves/skills/tactics are absolutely identical to FIFA 06, which is perhaps a bit disappointing)2. Andy Townsend replaces Andy Gray as Clive Tyldesley's sidekick, and surprisingly, he actually says a few new things. As per usual with the new FIFA games, however, the commentary is largely the same as FIFA 06, although there are some new phrases.3. The graphics are outstanding; the stadia are much more realistic; player likenesses are top banana (although I swear they've made Rooney look more attractive).4. During the match, you get updates in the form of a little box in the bottom right-hand corner telling you when there are goals in matches involving teams in your group - a nice touch; and occasionally Tyldesley will make a comment like 'Poland have scored a third goal in their game'.5. The teams are huge - about 40 players in each, so there's plenty of variety.6. When you go to start a match, you can look at a 'scout report' of the opposing team, which means you can look at its current form (e.g. WWDLW); formation; top scorers; world ranking; key players, etc. Another nice touch.7. You can start your 'career' in the World Cup Qualifiers, and you can actually play friendlies when they come up, so the game does have quite a bit of depth.8. Throughout the game you complete 'objectives', like if you win 3-0, you get 250 points to use to unlock bonuses etc. It's slightly more sophisticated than in FIFA 06.9. The main game menu is much more sophisticated than in previous FIFAs; there is an area of the screen which tells you about latest scores, suspensions, and also there's a bit which gives managers' reactions to matches, etc. Another nice touch.10. Star players like Beckham, Rooney, etc. actually play better, moving faster, keeping hold of the ball for longer, and so on. I don't know if I'm imagining it, but Beckham seems to shoot a bit like in real-life. Probably just me.11. Replays are slightly better, although goal replays take on largely the same form as in FIFA 06, with the really rather odd and irritating 'behind-the-goal' angle, which I just find incredibly annoying. When I've scored a beauty from 30 yards, I don't want to see it from the view of the goalkeeper's drinks-bottle in the corner of the net. Come on EA, get a grip.I can't think of any other specific examples, but generally the game does feel and play better than FIFA 06, and it's certainly worth buying to warm you up for the World Cup. The attention to detail is meticulous, and you can lead pretty much any nation in the world (180 teams, I believe) to the finals, so the game has a good longevity, even though it's only a World Cup edition. It's the best FIFA yet, but there's still a lot of room for improvement. The in-game music is still pretty annoying (I'm not a fan of German pop, myself), but there are a few dance tracks to get you moist. Also, the game does tend to freeze temporarily in the same places as FIFA 06, e.g. at the start, or after a substitution, but I can live with it.So, yes, if you have FIFA 06, I would still recommend 2006 FIFA World Cup. You'll notice the difference, but you'll curse when you see certain things that clearly should have been improved/changed/deleted/added from FIFA 06. Just don't be expecting a completely new game.

I had great fun playing the old Fifa World Cup 98 game, so I thought I'd give this a try. It's just as much fun again. The gameplay feels far faster and slicker than standard FIFA, and all the international sides are on offer. The one gripe I had was that all the sides performed exactly the same, and the defending doesn't really work - sometimes you'll find your entire squad floating round the halfway line as somebody runs straight through them, straight towards your net. I played Brazil vs Fiji, and got hammered by Fiji on the easiest difficulty level. Same result England vs Japan etc., all the sides felt exactly the same. And it's not just me, I've got a friend who's played every FIFA since it originally came out,and he noticed the same "problem". You can rack up cricket scores on this game due to the ease with which you can score. However, like I say, the computer can score just as easily, so you've still got work to do.It's good fun to be able to score absolute screamers from outside the box, and be able to perform all manner of fancy tricks at a much higher speed than the standard FIFA games. The graphics seem a little darker than the ordinary FIFA games, but maybe that was just a bad TV I was playing it on (played it in a shop, it was a big flatscreen LCD totally unsuited to the PS2). The commentary is a bit buggy, for example my Brazil vs. Fiji was a friendly, and Motson said so at the start of the match. Later on in the same game, though, he talked about how the Fijian striker running towards my goal could be the one to win the World Cup for Fiji tonight - I was not playing the World Cup final, so this shouldn't have proved possible. Also, there is delay - Motson only announces I've even let a shot go after it sails over the bar, he doesn't always catch up with what exactly's happened.I'd say this is a fun game, designed to simply cash in on the World Cup - it's not meant to be a serious game that you play for the long term. It's good for a casual kickabout with your mates, and has a somewhat arcadey feel to it. However, if you're wanting club football, and a serious management mode, get standard FIFA instead. It's a far more serious game all round.

Time and time again i have to argue with people that you can't judge any game with decent variety of options on how good it is versus the AI.The real game is ONLINE and against your mates. You can't have an online game thats too easy, quite simply because even the best players on the Planet lose. The online of Fifa is very much like Fifa 2006's online, although slightly quicker, and the community is if anything very slightly larger.Never less than 50 people online and ready to play, so its a pretty varied experience.I could write the same about the game as everyone else, and leave out the difficulty, (which is pretty much the only problem),this game will hit 5*s everytime if you play online. One thing that disturbed me about previous Fifas is that there used to be a way of scoring really easily, that seems to have dissapeared. They seem to have got a good balance between wing-play, and ground-play, between long shots, and short shots. The online play is incredibly narrow, there really is only one thing to do, and thats play constant 1v1s without any real follow through from one game to the next (Although there are cups, these often go awry because of players with faulty connections)My View on the game:Pros:@Slicker shooting system, with more realistic curve.@More realistic heading system@Less 'UBER' skills@Player Signature skills@MUCH more responsive goal keepers, the numbers of rebounds they let in is far fewer@They seem to have made a lot of the skills on players more realistic, for instance Thierry Henry has been boosted from his pitiful 91, and is now much more able to leave defences in his dust.@Truly horrific amounts of teams, i believe over 100, everything that could have been put in has been-Note to all-This is the last FIFA that will ever be truly catered to the Playstation 2, and its gold.Cons:@Not enough to do online@Sometimes plug-pullers can not be punished (although 90% of the time they are)(Most of the problems other people listed are true, so i won't repeat)

Irs obvious when first playing this game that the FIFA series is still hard pressed in its transition period but it it is also obvious that it is fully committed to improving the series, giving a more 'reflective' version of football, and delivering in the here and now also. As you might have read in reviews or any site willing to give an opinion, the football is still not as original or as refreshing as Pro Evo, yet. Pro Evo has had years to develop its stratagy of tweaks to give the user an amazing sense of what football is, whilst FIFA has only had this approach for 2/3 years. What is encouraging however if the way EA are now 'borrowing' ideas off Pro Evo to make their own product believable. And in my opinion it works. The front end menus and presentation is as polished as ever and with the players being much bigger and it is easier to manouvre them around the pitch and get them to do what you want (a problem earlier in the series). And there is a sense in this game that players are much more individual that in previous iterations in the Peter Crouch really feels different to control compared to Shaun Wright-Phillips. The player likenesses are fantastic stepping up a level again from last year, although this is probably only possible due to the extra power due to less teams. There are also much less scripted ways of scoring (including penalty box scrambles and 30 yard screamers) and the World Class difficulty seems to be a good balance (for me at least). Once again EA have made the World Cup version excellent (FIFA 98 was a highlight of the series) and taking away the obvious issues some will have with the lack of club teams and stadiums they have produced the best football experience this side of Pro Evo. This is the first FIFA to be truly multi-dimentional as there is a more competent football sim under the presentation if your willing to put the time into find it. If they take the same approach to FIFA 07, dare I say it, the series might actually begin to overtake Pro Evo in quality as well as sales....

Review based on Professional level(One down from World Class). The good news, soundtrack is great, crowd sound is great, shortly after Owen bagged his hatrick against Trinidad I heard the crowd chanting "One Mickey Owen..." the Fifa Series continues to blow Pro Evo out of the water with every aspect of presentation, licensed teams...etc. This game achieves its goal of recreating the World Cup for us footy mad console playing Rooney wanna bees, and I recommend it if you can cope with the bad news. The bad news...I converted to Pro Evo 2 some time ago and have never switched back to the Fifa series. However fustrated I am by Pro Evolution Soccer 5 being a backward step, 2006 Fifa World Cup fails to pull me back in,and the main reason is down to poor development from EA...it lags! (PS2 Version)There will be a moment when a large number of players are involved in a quick break away and the game takes a stutter, I thought it was my PS2 on the way out at first, but a review I recently read on gamespot confirms this. Game play is not as good as Pro Evolution 5, it seems as though you really play as a unit rather then individuals in a team if that makes sense? Tapping the *Player run" button will see a player break away from the "Unit", I often think its better if players can make their own runs without your intervention.I give this a 4/5 because of the enjoyment factor but I have accepted its faults...can you?

I am mainly a pro evo fan but this year I decided to by FIFA 06 and was dissapointed.I bought the FIFA World Cup game and played it and it was very good. Here are reasons I enjoyed it1. The Squads. England have 40 players to choose from which is great and Liechenstein have probably got the entire population in it.(Sadly no Aaron Lennon or Theo Walcott in the England squad)2. The Graphics. The players look sooooo real. You could probably even recognise Zat Knight.3. The Commentary. One Million times better than pro evo, great commentary that even mentioned bobby moore.4. The teams. 127 teams is fantastic. I am at the moment trying to take Luxembourg to World Cup glory but I am failing terribly.5.Penalties. These are soooo much fun. You can make the keeper wiggle jump and vibrate the opponents controller.Bad things.1.Through balls and runs. Make a player run forward and play a through ball and it is a 99% chance he is through on goal. I like that but some people are very fussy.2.Free Kicks. Even with Beckham, Ronaldihnio or Juhinio you will not score. it is really hard.3.Andorra are actually quite good and the stats are not that good. This is a great game and Konami need to do something special to Pro Evolution Soccer 6 or FIFA will win at last.

Quick review :BUY THIS GAME !!!Fifa has finally come of age and now we can all taste the ripe fruits of their hard work. This is an excellent game. The presentation is superb as always, plenty of extra like the challange mode where you reply old World Cup scenarios. Their are plenty of extras to unlock too, but what makes this game different is the gameplay. It plays better than any Pro Evolution Soccer - believe it or not. In fact I am writing this review in June 2008, and having played Fifa 98 to Fifa 2008, this is without doubt the best gameplay in any Fifa game, other Fifa games since this one are actually a step backwards gameplay wise.I have played the game in Semi Pro mode and even though I am quite a decent player I have found this quite difficult. Playing as Scotland I have normally won games by no more than a 2-0 scoreline, and often draw 0-0 or lose late in the match 1-0. So if you want an easier game you might need to try using amateur level.Hope you enjoy the game as much as I have, at this price you can't go wrong !

Its style is a bit different to most football games which makes a good change. It's much easier to defend for those players who struggle to make tackles. Yet although it's more difficult to score from close range as some of the other reviews state shooting from the edge of the box is almost a guarantee 75% of the time. The only down side to this is that scoring spectacular goals is not all that possible and you have very little control over where YOU want the ball to goal. Free kicks, crosses and corners are useless, can never get a head on the ball from the corner or cross plus no control on the ball for free kicks pointless.Overall an enjoyable game having the option to play the friendlygames and qualifiers is an added bonus along side an in game goal updates within your grouping is cool. A recommended buy even though it maybe a bit short and sweet but not much else you can do with a world cup game lol..

This game is surprisingly good. Ok the management/career mode isn't as good as FIFA 07, but at last there is a game on ps2 that allows you to control the international football teams in and around a major tournament without sacrificing the graphics or the management mode. The game notonly has the world cup in it, it also has the full qualifying procedures (which is a nice feature). This means that you can vertially take any team to the world cup final, whether they are a really crap team (say Andorra or Northern Ireland) or one that you would expect in the final e.g Brazil. The overall gameplay is slightly more difficult than FIFA 07 in terms of actually getting the ball in the net.Despite even having the best strike force on the pitch, like Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen for England. So if you are looking for a game that offers international football management on ps2, this is the best yet.

Even though i had felt the dissapointmant of previous fifa's i still went out and bought this thing of amazon. And i have to say it's okay. Even though the celebrations seem cartoony and and streamers fall down every single goal you score this fifa scores in a different way to. The passing and in game controls have improved somewhat and the season well world cup modes are very enjoyable where you can qualify fully or jump straight into the fifa world cup with any national team of your choosing including first timers trinidad and also togo. Overall it has improved considerably since fifa 06 and even pro evo players should at least give this a try.Your only world cup game for this years world cup with some great commentary as well so go on feel the atmosphere in germany, get your crowd behind you and score that beatiful goal.Fifa world cup 2006 is a 8.7/10 deffo

I have to admit i was worrid when i bought this game because of how poor the fifa games have been lately, but i am pleased to say that world cup 2006 is a masterpiece. The gameplay is sound, the "star players" are a fantastic addition and when you play the game it actually feels like you are playing in the world cup with all the presure and exictment. This really is a good game so order it of amazon now....

22.4.2006

I have played the pc demo version and it is much better than fifa 06 as you are able to do more skills and actually be able to run a around players. In fifa 06 ruuning around players is more difficult. I would personally say that this game would be worth buying this game as this the only licenced world cup game out there. Defintely worth a buy. See what you think

24.5.2015

Despite it being dated, the game itself is fun to play. It has a great amount of tracks and you can play as every country in the world apart from the UAE but I digress, that the game allows you to go all the way to the World Cup and even through the qualifying stages. Very fun to play in multiplayer as well.

29.9.2007

I Personally Think the game is really good,I RATE IT 4 OUT OF 5 FOR A SIMPLE REASON ITS NOT QUITE THERE YET,I ADMIT IT FEELS GOOD TO CHANGE HISTORY LIKE IN THIS GAME,CHANGE WHO WON THE WORLD CUP BUT ITS FAR TOO EASY,THE ONLY FANTASTIC TIME IS WHEN ME AND MY GIRL ZOHY JONES PLAY MULTIPLAYER
