As an allergic asthma and rhinitis sufferer since youth, by courtesy of the pesky housemite, I've lived more or less contentedly with prescription antihistamines, cortisone sprays and decongestants for decades. Somehow, the very existence of domestic air purifiers completely passed me by - no medical practitioner (out of about 5 in the past 30 years, including a consultant) has ever so much as mentioned air purification; one did suggest I should desist from housework and employ a cleaner; although he didn't offer one on prescription.Recently the medication began to lose its effectiveness, and increased dosages brought unacceptable daytime drowsiness; so I began research.Amazon rapidly popped up the dozens of air purifiers in the search context, and the process of kicking myself began. However, it soon struck me that every well-reviewed model has its one-star detractors, which doesn't help choice, especially with prices ranging from £50 to £900. My instinct was to buy the best, but that's a lot of money if they don't do it for you; so I chose to gamble £170 on this Fellowes, "just to see", and for no special reason, except that when I got to it, I was tired of looking. Interior design-wise it's a disaster - but it works. I started it up in my bedroom on arrival mid-afternoon, setting the fan on max until I retired, when I returned it to auto. That night, I had no nasal congestion without taking any medication - for the first time in as long as I can remember. Depressingly, it returned the following night - but it dawned on me that I had spent an hour or two before bed sitting in front of my desktop PC - which blows a steady stream of obviously dust-laden air into my face.In common with others, nights are worst, hence the bedroom siting. Lights and noise don't bother me, but to my ears, it's whisper quiet anyway on the lowest setting, which is where it spends most of its time, and on a breezy night, I wouldn't hear it. But if it finds pollution and ramps itself up to max, it could easily waken you. (I can understand others being bothered by noise, incidentally, but why lights ? If you shut your eyes to go to sleep, you can't see them...)Switched on for the first time, it defaulted to automatic, lowest output, showing the blue "Everything OK" light. This initially disappointed, as with another reviewer - until I realised that the lights only appear to indicate airborne chemical and odour pollution, not house dust. And it soon demonstrated its dust-control abilities. My ancient, uncleanable, central heating skirting radiators send out dust-laden hot air every year on startup, always producing the worst symptoms of the year; and when the central heating came on at 6am (well, it was summer, after all), it immediately wound up the fan motor to max, whilst the light stayed blue. The next night, it showed its other qualities; too many peas with dinner brought the inevitable nocturnal gaseous consequences; in seconds, the orange pollution warning lamp lit, and the fan moved to max. (If your partner is fond of peas, sprouts and spinach, this could be a worthwhile investment...) On the third night, I had to zap a mosquito with an aerosol spray, just a single brief shot, a good ten feet from the machine - and again within a second or two, it moved to max again, this time showing its red light. Makes you wonder about those fly-sprays... But last night it ramped itself up to Red-Light-Max for no reason I could detect, for about an hour. Still, better safe than sorry...I'm satisfied that both this method of mitigating housemite allergy, and this machine, are efficient and worthwhile - but only in parallel with other measures. Going into an air-purified bedroom will not instantly alleviate symptoms generated by exposure to a dust-laden atmosphere immediately beforehand elsewhere; the histamine-triggered inflammation and membrane permeability may persist well into the night even in clean air. I also doubt if it's much use purifying the air, and then, say, laying your head on an old, mite-infested pillow lacking an appropriate protective cover, or sleeping under an ancient duvet. And there's always the possibility that your rhinitis may have some other, perhaps additional, cause; I once asked an ENT consultant what could cause rhinitis, and he pointed to a list three pages long in a weighty medical tome.I've bought another smaller air purifier, the dinky Airvax, to sit by the PC, since I can't redirect the PC fan. This one is even quieter than the Fellowes, virtually silent, on the lowest setting, But it compares poorly in terms of specification, capacity and functionality, and is more or less the same price. Its saving graces are the supposed 3-year filter life, and miniscule energy consumption (it's 12V); and it appears to serve my specific purpose well. These two machines, in conjunction with other appropriate measures promise a worthwhile health improvement.

I purchased this unit in Germany through Amazon.I read all the reviews in Germany and from the U.K. concerning Air cleaners in the price range from 200 to 500 Euros. The brand name did not matter as all had the same plusses and minuses. You could simply substitute the Model number and still read the same type of review.First the reason I bought it was to remove cat hair and dust. I don’t have allergies. I don’t care about 99.99% efficiency and pollen removal. I wanted the dust out of the air. It does this very well. Actually I bought three devices to attack the dust and car hair issue. My wife does have a slight reaction to cat hairs and tends to cough at night.First we bought an IRobot Roomba 865 to vacuum the dust and cat hairs that land on the floor – probably the best purchase – it continually picks up dust and hair that the vacuum misses... Next a Balmuda Rain Air humidifier/filter to keep the humidity at 50% and catch the odd dust particle – it really looks cools and is very quiet. The last was this air cleaner after I determined that the Balmuda only cleans air as a secondary function – it turns off a lot after the humidty is reached and the air flow is very low. Some reviewers of all models complain they still have allergy issues after using an air cleaner/purifier and blame the air cleaner. I’m not sure the criticism is deserved. I could suggest that using a three pronged approach like I did might help.Major review issues (of all air cleaners)1. Package: Big. Yes it is. Next question.2. Noise: Step one and two very quiet. You can however hear it at night. It is a fan after all. I do not understand the reviewers that think they can purchase a air cleaner that is absolutely quiet. If one exists they will need to shell out a lot more money and not blame this unit. Moving parts and moving air does make a certain amount of noise. Personally I let it run all day in the bedroom and at night put it in the living room. This unit tends to have a cycle that turns on about 20 seconds and 5 seconds off that you can hear. That drove me a bit batty. If it had a continuous noise level that would not be so bad. That was in Auto mode – with and without Plasma True Ionizer. The work around is to put it in manual mode at night. I think the fan tends to run steadier without the variation, but I just put it in the living room to clean the downstairs air overnight. I will try in manual mode at night a report back.3. Plastic smell: Yes it is there for the first week. Yes it does go away. Don’t worry about it unless you are a supersensitive person. Almost all units seem to have this issue. Comedes – Phillips –Fellowes – etc.4. Auto Mode: At first I was going to send my unit back. The auto mode did not seem to work. I even shook a dust cloth full of dust into the intakes to see if I could force it out of Level 1. Nothing happened. I left for a few days and now it works. Actually I found it working by accident. Some reviewers complain that there is dust on the unit and use that as an argument that it does not clean the air (more on this later). I wiped off the dust that had collected around the intakes and lo and behold it went to Level 2. Later that day my wife was using the hair dryer in the adjacent bathroom with the door open. We had the unit on the stairway landing. It went to Level 3 - Amber and soon settled back down. My take on Auto mode is that it works OK but is not really necessary anyway. I read the same issues on ALL brands so I suspect they may all use the same Chinese vendor to supply the air-sensor anyway –just a theory.5. Dust on the unit: The unit collects dust. This is not a fault. It is basic physics. It is a plastic unit that is getting a slight electrical charge due to the air moving through it and perhaps the rotating fan inside it. Dust is brought to the unit by the fan. The electrical charge - guess what? – attracts dust! Some sticks on the unit before it reaches the intake. You simply wipe it down occasionally – and test your auto function….6. Display Light. Many U.K. reviewers went on about the need for absolute darkness needed for sleep. The display does not dim on this model but you can simply turn it around. There will still be a little light.7. Filters: I bought the extra kit with One HEPA filet and 4 Carbon filters. Cost 70 Euros and should be good for one year. The first year would only need three more carbon filters since you get a Hepa filter (one year) and a carbon filter (three months). Some users cut their own out carbon filters out of kitchen fan filters. I do not see it as overly expensive for what it is asked to do.Four stars due to iffy Auto mode and variable noise level.

This is a fantastic product! We bought this as we had recently bought our home and mould started to appear in random places. We fixed the problems but I instantly bought this to make sure no spores affected my children. Our home is also on a main road so it's great for cleaning the air. I spent weeks trying to decide which machine to get. I contacted allergy uk and they were so helpful! We all found our selves coughing with the air pollution and spores which really worried me. I bought this as recommended by allergy uk and haven't looked back! This clears mould spores, dust, pollution from the air... The list continues...It's really the best thing I've ever spent money on!I also had a issue when we first moved in that I kept waking in the night coughing or with a blocked nose. The house had been cleaned top to bottom so no heavy dust, thoroughly washed all the carpets with our carpet cleaner and I shut the windows at night hoping that would help, by stopping the air pollution from the cars. But nothing did until I got this.I use it on our landing, yes it's not very pretty and takes up room but we all breathe much better. I leave my bedroom door open in the evening and it blows into our room, the other two bedrooms, bathrooms and it's also open plan downstairs so it really does clear the air. We also have a dog and it clears pet dander in the air too.If I open the bathroom door after having a shower, and it's on, it instantly starts going faster, the ring light turns to red and off it goes. I really do love this product and would be lost without it! Would never buy any other brand or model.Highly recommend! Especially if you have children or elderly relatives that may suffer from allergies, asthma or have mould issues. One thing I will note is that I turn the ioniser button off now as I have this on every evening and it isn't good for little lungs to be inhaling the active ions. (I have a one year old) but it's as easy as one press and the ioniser is switched offI even emailed fellowes head office and spoke to them about the ioniser and having a young baby. They were also extremely helpful and gave me lots of advice when I was considering which product to buy.Thank you for creating such an amazing product! By far the best on the market that ticks all the boxes!(Sorry for the essay!) :)Currently need to buy a new carbon filter so thought I would write this review whilst I was on. You can see in the photos it indicates when you need to replace the carbon and hepa filters. I think we've had this between 9months to a year now and this is the first time it has lit up with the carbon replacement light. The hepa still hasn't lit yet to be replaced. I think they do recommend changing them every three to six months if I remember correctly but I haven't had to until now as the air quality has been superb! I'll just go off when it lights up :)

We live in a rented property, which suffers with condensation issues, which we try and keep on top of daily, but I thought that despite our best efforts, that there might be airbourne particles which were affecting the quality of the air we breathe and therefore might be having adverse effects on our health. On first setting up the air purifier in our bedrooms - having dusted and vacuumed earlier that day, the air quality in one room came up showing it was poor - lighting up red and we left it running until later in the day it was showing as blue - and that the air quality was now good. You could sense the change in the room - the air felt fresher and even smelt fresher and easier to breathe.Wemoved the purifier around the house to check each room with varying results (the rooms that have more problematic condensation issues had poorer air quality understandably), but we tend to use this most in the bedrooms, as this is where we were most concerned about the air we were all breathing overnight. We run the purifier daily and it now tends to show as blue most days when we run it, but every now and then it will have to work a bit harder (it automatically ups its game and ups the fan if the air quality drops) before showing the all clear in blue.I have been very reassured when one daughter recently came down with a nasty cold, that this was filtering out the germs and I think that helped our family all coming down with it - the lights certainly turned to red when she was full of germs and her bedroom was being coughed and sneezed and so on.This is very easy to use and when on the lowest setting, it can run overnight without disturbing you (I find the sound quite comforting - but I appreciate not everyone might), but on full power, it would be difficult for most people to ignore - I would suggest that would be better done during the daytime (if required) and then once the room has been blasted - you could leaving it ticking over on low fan power overnight for anyone with allergy issues or overnight breathing issues. This really does come highly recommended.

The DX95 is the top model air purifier in the Aeramax DX range, and as you'd expect for the price, it comes with the True HEPA filter, which is supposed to pretty much capture just about every little thing found floating in the air (you'll have to take their word for it!)Whilst this device will be a boon to those who suffer from allergies, the DX95 is equally effective at dealing with simple things such as cooking odours, cigarette smoke and pet smells! Ours has been used mainly to combat paint odours whilst we decorate the house, so is being moved around from room to room as we work. The spec sheet says it covers areas of 28m², which should be more than adequate for most domestic uses (unless you happen to live in a castle,in which case it may be more effective to just leave the drawbridge down instead). As the particles in the air can't be seen by the naked eye, you have to take their word for it that all the baddies are being removed. The DX95 does this by way of a coloured indicator wheel which changes colour depending on how much `stuff' it is getting rid off. The speed of the fan can also be adjusted depending on the environment it is being used in.It's a little on the large size and not very pretty to look at, so won't be constantly kept on display, and whilst it is not silent in use, the noise isn't anything which you notice too much - in fact the longer you use it the less you notice it.As I don't suffer from allergies, I can't honestly say that my health has been improved as a direct result, but the reduction of odours is certainly noticeable. The life of the filter will be pretty much determined by the quality of the air it's used in, and how often it is used but the carbon filter should last on average about 3 months, with the True HEPA filter needing to be replaced after a year. Again, the DX95 will tell you when this needs doing. All in all, a very capable purifier from a great make, which should give peace of mind if you require such a device.

ONLY HAD THIS FOR ONE DAY BUT UP TO NOW IT SEEMS TO BE WORKING GREAT, PITY THE MANUAL IS NOT MORE INFORMATIVE. MY LARGE FRONT ROOM IS VERY DUSTY ( HOPEFULLY NO LONGER ) BUT SINCE I HAVE HAD THIS ON FOR A FULL DAY, ON THE FIRST SETTING, AND LEFT ON AUTO, AND NO DUST ( AND MY GLASS TABLES ARE BLACK AND SHOW THE DUST IN ALL ITS GLORY ). AND YES YOU CAN TURN OFF THE IONISER BY HOLDING THE BUTTON FOR 3 SECONDS, I LEFT IT ON THO. NOW IT IS VERY VERY NOISY ON ANYTHING ABOVE THE FIRST SETTING, BUT ON THE FIRST SETTING IT,S NOT THAT BAD, BUT CAN STILL BE HEARD THO, WILL NOT NOTICE IT WHEN THE TV IS ON ( I HOPE ) I PUT THEM STICKY FELT FLOOR PROTECTORS ON MINE AND IT HAS HAD SOME EFFECT ON THE NOISE,SO ONLY FOUR STARS BECAUSE IT IS SO NOISY, AND ALSO FOR THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE TO REPLACE FILTERS ( CHARCOAL ONE EVERY THREE MONTHS, ON AMAZON FOR A PACK OF 4 = £27.99, THAT IS IF YOU USE IT ALL DAY ) AND HEPA ( £23.34 FOR ONE ON AMAZON ) EVERY YEAR, AND THEY ARE NOT CHEAP. I WILL UPDATE THIS IN A MONTH AFTER I HAVE USED IT MORE, BUT UP TO NOW I AM HAPPY WITH IT..OH AND WELL DONE AMAZON ORDERED AT ABOUT 5PM 16/03/2016, PAID FOR ONE DAY DELIVERY AND GOT IT 9AM 17/03/2016, SO AMAZING SERVICE..WELL HAD IT A MONTH NOW AND I HAVE TO ADMIT ITS NOT TOO BAD, DUST LEVELS HAVE REALLY DROPPED, BUT NOT GONE COMPLETELY ABOUT 97% ISH, SAYING THAT THO IT DOES WORK GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. AND THE NOISE ON LEVEL 1, WELL THERE IS NONE ( NOW THAT IS HAS BEEN RUN IN ), BUT GO UP A LEVEL AND YOU KNOW ITS THERE, ALSO PICKS UP THE SLIGHTEST SMELL AND KICKS UP A NOTCH AND SEEMS TO STAY THERE A BIT TO LONG BUT I CAN LIVE WITH IT, SO WELL WORTH THE MONEY, I AM GETTING ANOTHER 1 FOR BEDROOM...WOULD I RECOMMEND? YES ITS A GOOD MACHINE FOR THE PRICE..

First of all, this is primarily going to be of use when the pollen is about and my son is suffering (as we live in an area surrounded by trees and grassland. So, this being winter, the review is limited to its wider functions. I will update once the pollen is in the air...In terms of its other main function, which is removing airborne odour, it seems to be very effective. It senses how much to run and provides a boost when required. After cooking in the kitchen, it did detect the cooking smells and turned itself up to full throttle to rid the air of the smell of frying. An hour or so later, when it had detected the smell had gone, the unit dropped down to a more gentle pace. The description claims it is almost silent at low speed, however I would say that the noise level is slightly higher than I would have expected, but still within acceptable limits (but a lot of that is to do with the noise of moving air...)Finally, I must say that this unit is bigger than I had expected. On the floor it comes up to my knee and is about a foot wide, so think where you are going to place this as it does need to be away from walls by a good few centimeters to allow the air to freely flow around it.As I say, I will update come the summer with experience of clearing pollen. In the meantime, I hope this has provided you with some buying detail that you wouldn't otherwise have had.UPDATED========Well we have used this, but far less than we expected. The aim reason is that my son, who was the main reason for having this, have now left home!In hindsight, the unit is very big; a bit too big to have it cluttering up the room. So, yes it works (and works well), but it all depends on how pressing is your need.

I was cynical about how much difference this product would make at first but I am a total convert. I think it is superb and if I had the spare cash I'd buy several as gifts. I recommend this utterly. Our home is just under 200 years old and the floor space is around 100 square metres, on two floors. I have the Fellowes plugged in downstairs in the kitchen and it has been left turned on 24/7 for around a month. I mainly have it on low, but have put it on auto when we are cooking if the oven was particularly smelly. I think they are being cautious when they say it is suitable for a 28 M Square room - the entire house smells great. The air quality in the house is incredible now.I can't quite believe how much better it is. Cooking smells are no longer an issue (even though the kitchen is open to the hallway). We had a smoker staying in the house for a few weeks - totally eliminated the smell of cigarette smoke. We have to watch out for mould from condensation and I was worried about spores as our 10 year old was coughing when she went to bed - this has stopped totally. We don't have a pet as we're allergic but I am considering getting a cat now - I think the Air Purifier will reduce the need for anti hystamines. In terms of cost, although the initial outlay is quite high, the energy consumption is very good - it uses 6 Watts - which is the same as a low energy light bulb. (Note that the DX5 costs more to run!) There is a cost involved in replacing the filters, but I find it value for money.I am thrilled with this product. Awesome. Feel free to comment if you have any questions - I will try to answer them from our experience.

When the product arrived I was very disappointed to find that it didn't actually work at all - as in literally, plugged it in, nothing. So that hasn't exactly given me the greatest confidence in Amazon Warehouse deals, because it seems to me the product was likely returned by a customer, but was then shipped off to me without so much as even a simple check of whether it came on or not. A previous Warehouse deal I bought also didn't work properly on arrival (a set of headphones that I managed to get working by following a process to reprogram the on-board chip). However, when I raised the issue with Amazon customer services, without too much of a problem, I was issued a full refund,so can't complain at all.Further to that, I set about dismantling the thing, and managed to figure out with a newly purchased multi-tester that the internal power supply seemed to be the problem - taking a chance and ordering an LED power supply unit of equivalent rating to swap the defect unit out did the trick, result! Now the unit is working, can't praise it enough. I suffer from weed and grass allergies across the summer, and live in an old Habsburg building in Budapest, which provides more than its fair share of mould thereabouts - and the theory was, incessant itchy eyes and mucus were the result. Within a few hours of having the machine running, such relief to have nasal passages clearer than I can long remember. So thank science, this product definitely works for me without a shadow!

Note: This is my second air filter, the first being 'Filtrete FAP03 Ultra Clean Air Purifier - Large - Room Size 34 m2', my reason for going for a different model was purely experimental. My reason for buying it for my bedroom is an instant water heater creates and brings in lots of dust through the air release vent to outside, also living in a city going through massive construction projects adds to it. Those are my reasons, aside the normal hay fever.I use it on the default automatic mode where the power adjusts to the environment. On the lowest setting I am reassured that the air is being cleaned, and when I use deodorant or I open the window it ramps up the power and the colour indicator changes from green (normal, clean) to either orange or red depending on the severity. Bottom line this works wonders, I find the Filtrete filters faster but you have to manually change the power and while odours will indicate the air quality you can't tell air quality if there is no scent. The fellowes does, this is a fantastic feature and my room no longer becomes horridly dusty days after cleaning it and my hay fever is much better - I can now sleep with the window open. The only con, the led light display is bright and distracting. No good for a bedroom at night and not good near a TV as it will divert your attention.

We moved to an old cottage a couple of months ago. It was built in the 1800s and has poor ventilation so the usual slight mould issues for a house of this type. My asthma quickly deteriorated to the point where I have been using my Ventolin 5+ times a day and night which is the worst it has ever been.I was dubious about the claims made by air purifier manufacturers, however I read a lot of positive experiences from asthma sufferers who have bought air purifiers so finally I thought I should try one. They all said the same thing: it's crucial to get a HEPA filter one as this removes mould spores.I bought the Fellowes DX95 and have had it running for a few days in the living room and bedroom. My asthma has improved significantly in that time and I can only attribute this to the air purifier. The DX95 is excellent; it's well built, and importantly the replacement air filters for the unit are reasonably priced (~£30). The unit is fairly quiet on the lowest setting and probably fine for all but the lightest sleepers. The highest fan speeds sounds like a jet aircraft but very effective at cycling the air.If you suffer from asthma triggered by mould, pollen or pet dander then I would recommend you give an air purifier a try but make sure it has a HEPA filter.

When I lived in the states I had a Heaven Fresh 380 air cleaner and found it more that adequate for my sinus issues. I knew before the warning light went on that the filter needed cleaning when I woke up feeling stuffy and congested. On moving to the UK, I was in the market for an air cleaner for my bedroom as I was waking up stuffed everyday. Based on reviews and the very high cost of replacing the Heaven Fresh on purchased the large Fellows AeraMax. Sadly, I still wake up with a partially stuffy nose and can't really say that this is the best air cleaner for me. It may be, as we are still moving in, that the increased dust resulting from shifting furniture and unpacking boxes is affecting its ability to do a better job,but the lights indicate that it's working the way it should.Once the dust settles, I will update this review. Maybe we are just expecting too much of the appliance at this moment.UPDATE: Did I say I wasn't sure this was working? The light came on today to change the carbon filter - I was shocked at the filth that this filter had accumulated. I can no longer say that it might not be working. The filter light came on earlier than 3 months and it's no surprise. I'm thinking of buying one or two more for other rooms .

This unit is large (but quite light), and powerful. It can move quite a lot of air, yet remains quiet on the lower settings (not so much on the highest setting, though!)I was a little sceptical of the automatic air quality monitoring, but it really does seem to react to pollutants in the air - if I spray an air freshener in the vicinity of the unit while it's in auto mode, it will respond soon after by increasing the fan speed to clear the air.On higher power modes it's a bit louder but shifts a lot of air - I can see it being useful in the summer as a free-standing fan as well as air filter - the adjustable outlet vent will make directing the air easier.Power-wise,I hooked it up to my power monitor to see how much electricity it draws - on fan settings 1-4 it drew 6w, 11w, 21w and 83w respectively. So, on the lower settings it's a similar power draw to an average CFL low-energy lightbulb being left on - and at max power it's still less than a typical old-style 100w filament bulb.Filters are reasonably expensive to replace, for instance here on Amazon current prices are the

I'm writing this after 4 months of 24/7 use. We always had problems with excessive dust in the air and this device helps fighting it. For comparison under direct sunlight, before purchasing this product there was so many dust particles in the air that I couldn't believe what we're breathing and now there are hardly any. This product also removes smells from the air, perfumes, chemicals, cooking, smoke, welding fumes etc. Power consumption is incredibly low at lowest speed. Changing filters couldn't be easier, just slide the tray out, replace the filters, slide the tray back in. The only downside is that device is audible, even at lowest speed. It's still pretty quiet but the low frequency "broom" it produces could be irritating for some at night. Ionizer brings up the mood and it used to be audible too with a high frequency hissing sound but it went away after a week or so. Ionizer can be toggled on/off by holding the lowest button until the device beeps. I still remember the feeling during first night of use. It was like sleeping outside under the starry sky. Yes, it's that good.

It has been in use for several weeks now and I was unsure as to whether it was having any real effect. This week I've been stopping with friends and after two nights without the air purifier my nose is bunged up and my eyes are running, so I can't wait to get back home and get the DX95 running again. The non defeat able ioniser doesn't affect either me or my wife, she occasionally suffers from a touch of Asthma and hasn't complained. My biggest complaint is that you can't turn off the blue display at night, I have to put something over it or it keeps me awake. I'd have given 5 stars if they had sorted the brightness out.I usually keep it on the low setting and it is quiet enough to sleep easily, after a few days I started to wonder if it was still working and lay in bed listening for it!As one reviewer said it turned to blue when turned on and stayed blue. I be managed to get my display to go both red and orange, just break wind! Or spray aftershave or furniture polish.
