Well if you haven't heard Fallout before then you are missing a critical piece of gaming history. Why is it so good? The game itself puts your character into the midst of a post nuclear wasteland, that used to be America, simpy trying to survive the wastes. As part of a tribe that the protagonist of the first Fallout set up, you find out that you are his descendant. But not all is well...your village is suffering under the strain of background radiation, mutated cows and faltering crops. So you are tasked by your village elder to find something that can sort everything out. There's a very quick summary of the start of the game for you.But that simply isn't it. The game keeps on getting deeper and deeper yet all the while remains fun.Though by todays standards, the graphics are primitive (anmimated GIF files I think). However, what they do to the game easily makes you forget about that. Lets say you got your character a shotgun and trained them up with "Small Arms", then he/she'd be good with it right? But lets look at it in combat. If your character scores an esteemed critical hit, you are rewarded with a very well detailed death animation. Characters heads can be blown off, half of thier midsection will be removed or if you like explosives, a muddy and bloody puddle is left after the bodies disintergrate. So that makes it more fun, but the sheer fact that there is so much you can do. You can train the skills you choose at the start of the game to further develop whatever character you want to play. As the game goes along and you gain levels, you are rewarded with a perk every few levels that significantly improoves the way you play the game (Perk: Mr Fixit- Gain skill with mechanics).Aside the large array of choices you can make for your character, the game itself has more than one way to solve pretty much every single quest you go on. For instance, right near the start, you can stock a guys stillery with firewood to help with his booze making. Alternativeley, you can jsut speak to another guy and tell him the location of the still so he can destroy it... It isnt as simple as this for other quests. Especially later in the game. But the fact that you have so many options open to you will keep you more than busy once you get into this game.If that wasn't enough, you ought to know that there will be a lot of killing in this game as you work towards the games finale. So the kind designers of what used to be Interplay have included a huge and diverse range of weapons for your pleasure. Like getting up close and personal? Then you can look forward to the sledgehammer, spiked knuckles or even a crowbar.Like feeling safe from a range? Say hello to the Hunting, Sniper and Laser rifles.Want to haul big guns? Say hello to gatling lasers and several types of miniguns.Trust me, there are more than enough to keep you occupied. As for the bad parts of the game? The fact remains that in order to complete most quests, you need to move to other parts of towns and it is very easy to get lost and hence frustrated with your own progression. Also, considering it's quite an old game, running it on XP meakes it mroe than likely the game will crash from time to time. So you had best be comfortable with saving frequently.Look, I've talked long enough. I promise you will like this game. Its a wonderful extension to the first one and will easily grab your attention.Buy it now!

As I start writing this, Fallout 3 is looming on the horizon. With its imminent release, I decided to "brush up" on the previous games and decided to give Fallout 2 another go. Some 10 years ago, I initially bought it only to get overwhelmed by the sheer size of the game but I wasn't going to make the same mistake this time!Oh yes, Fallout 2 is big. Not enormous, granted, but that would have come at the expense of the immense detail that went into the game. Every town or city has its own story and unlike the Baldur's Gate series and its ilk, you often have to squeeze quests out of people instead of them being thrown in your face which is refreshing for a change.Once you get started, though, you're hooked. Don't let it overwhelm you - take your time. Don't be afraid to write down some things because it's easy to lose the plot. One of Fallout's weak points is the lack of a journal so it can become hard to remember who is where but this is easily forgiven seeing how interesting many of the quests are. You won't find any "kill X monsters" quests here, no sir.The combat is turn based and is really brilliant. The range of weapons is staggering and some can even be updated. Couple this with different firing modes, different types of ammo and you got plenty of choice on how to proceed in combat. Blasting an opponent to pieces with a well aimed shot remains really satisfying. So what you got is a big game that has a brilliant story, doesn't take itself too seriously all the time and where you can really do things the way YOU want. The few negatives are easily forgiven: yes, the random encounters during travelling can become tedious and the critical damage can cause suddent death during combat but over all, it's game that is still hard to improve upon.Bethesda has had their work cut out for them - let's see if they can match Fallout 2's qualities.

A game you simply MUST play- Fallout 1 is a classic and the sequel builds upon it providing a vast open world to explore. The story isn't quite as good and it is more tongue in cheek, in many ways it improves on the original but I still prefer Fallout 1 for its innovation. However, Fallout 2 is vast and has so many different quests to embark upon, so many characters to meet, so many choices to make- amazing replay value, more replay value than any other game I have ever played STILL. I have been through this game repeatedly and have now lost count- dated now but the atmosphere is so intoxicating. The freedom of choice is captivating- such an open world and so many different choices to make, you will be immersed. It has a dark edge as you pick the bones of human society in a harsh world that twists your (very customisable) characters mind. This is the most fun I have ever had in any game ever before or since! Download all patches, including the critters to get the kids put back in the game. Fallout 1 is the original and best but this sequel is amazingly enjoyable- its an oldie now but I still love to play it- sublime

I remember playing this game ages ago and can still hear the cries of people i've torn asunder, ripped apart with miniguns and blown to kingdom come with Plasma rifles and rocket launchers...ahh bliss...You start as a weakling little follower with the traditional blue vault suit but the you are set in to the world to find the G.E.C.K to save the vault - where you travel all over to new locations, are able to recruit, kill or sell as slave - followers and can aqquire bigger armour, badder weapons and encounter tough opponents to which should meet the end of your plasma rifle - or if you want practise - head to the local town and use the locals as moving targets - i did!All in all - Fallout 2is a brilliant game - which is why i have ordered my copy to arrive in a few days!
