I took a chance on these pencils as they were part of the Prime Day offers. I have a LOT of coloured pencils, including Derwent, Faber-Castell Polychromos and Caran D'Ache so really didn't need any more, but I decided to give these a try. Marketed as being for "...both aspiring and hobby artists..." they are produced to a lower budget than Faber-Castell's other ranges. They are thinner than the Polychromos and the wood is paler and more grainy plus the name of the colour is not printed on the exterior, though there is a number that can be referenced to the colours via the enclosed leaflet. But what are they like in use?I was pleasantly surprised to find that they lay down colour and blend really well! The first thing I normally do with a new range of pencils is create a colour chart using thin strips of bristol board. The Goldfabers produced a saturated colour that layered really well to give a very nice toned colour. Like most coloured pencils, some hues are harder than others but even the gold and silver (often very hard) layered quite well. The leads are glued to the wood, so are strong and retain a point so long as you remember to rotate every few seconds. They also sharpen well without breaking and even when burnishing I only had the very tip break a couple of times while doing my 48-colour chart. These pencils would suit hobby-ists and students very well and give high quality results. The only negative I found was that some shine was produced while burnishing, particularly on the yellows. As normal for Faber-Castell, there is an emphasis on greens, browns and blues in the set, with fewer fleshtones, so these would be better suited for landscape, urban or wildlife drawings than portraits. If you have other pencils though, they will work with them very well.

I did a lot of research before I decided to purchase this box of 48 coloured pencils. I was torn between these, the Faber Castell Polychromo series and Derwent's Lightfast. For me, the Goldfaber was the right decision for a variety of reasons:.) The range of colours offers everything I need. I love the vibrancy of the colours..) The pencils are neither too hard (they feel creamy and lush when colouring) nor too soft (they sharpen to a fine point, excellent for detail work).) The price is mid-range for a high quality product and a lot more affordable than the other series mentioned..) I love the smaller, two layered tin box. It's easier to store than the wider tins, and, with the easy lift out-tray,the pencils are easily accessible..) As a hobby artist, this is perfect for me! If you are a professional artist, your needs might be different from mine. The one thing that concerned me before me was that the pencils don't have the colour name printed on them. They only have a number, and inside the tin there's a list where you can check their names. Strangely, now that I'm using the pencils, this is a non issue. You'll soon get used to the system and it is only a minor drawback.Highly recommended!

My first thought on receiving my order was Amazon really need to sort out their packaging as again these were delivered in just a cardboard Envelope.. But on opening said package all was well no pencils broken, tin not damaged ( still think a box would be better to send out pencils rather than a cardboard envelope), just my opinion.I have since got my colouring out to try out pencils, all worked very well.. colours are great and yet again I find Faber castell a very good make and no problems at all with sharpening .. my only suggestion would be that they do a larger tin of 72 if not more like they do with their other ones..These are very good for getting into delicate corners or tiny spaces as they are a thinner lead and keep to a point as slightly harder lead than their polychromes , but both pencils work well together..Overall very good buy not a bad or high price tag .. No regrets on these at all

very impressed with the faber gold 48 set of colouring pencills. there equal to the faber castell polychomes.the gold is gold in this set. just would like more of them. there are some open stock at the moment which is great. the faber gold just has the number on the pencil its written in white which is easy to see on the grey blue barrolthere also a barcode and the country too. in the tin there a booklet , the trays have lifting loops which i love ( think the lifting loops are just in 48 tin as this is the maximum size set) they colour beautifuly . for £33 it a lovely set.

Faber Castell produce excellent pencils and these are no exception. They layer and blend very well on a variety of papers. A great selection of 48 colours, but a shame that there is not a larger set available. Hopefully in the future, there will be. The pencils are numbered, but there is no colour name on the pencil. The tin is quite compact, with the top tray layer having handles, so it lifts out easily. Removing each pencil from the tray is easy.

Love these as they have very good pigmentation, has a smooth application but you can still sharpen it so you can get lots of details.Lots of people are comparing these to Polychromos (which are fab by the way) but these are wax based pencils. I personally prefer these over Prisma's as they don't break when sharpening. IA good selection of colours- I can't fault it.

Great quality colouring pencils as can be expected from Faber Castell! I was researching between more oily pencils and decided I did not been the smooth blend that pencils like polychromos gave. These are a bit harder and not as costly and I’m very happy with this purchase. Will purchase again when I need to top up my supplies.

I purchased these pencils because they are slimmer than the other pencils I have in my collection. I've got to say they are brilliant. If you want a pencil for doing detail work, these are the ones to go for. Easy to work with, lovely colours and sharpen to a fine point. Brilliant!!

I have got many coloured pencils and have some of the more expensive ones but I think the Faber Castell Goldfaber must be my favourites. They are so easy to handle and blend very well. The colours look lovely. I hope in the future that Faber Castell will maybe produce more colours

Another solid winner from faber castell I have the Polychromos too and got these put of curiosity and they're very good nice selection of colours and the silver and gold are easily better than most metallic pencils of those colours so worth it for those especially

The pencils sharpen to a beautiful point, no problem to sharpen either. The colours are vivid and wonderful to work with as the layers go down so smoothly. Well done Faber for coming up with Goldfaber. I buy them all the time now. They are very very well priced.

As soon as i opened these goldfaber pencils i had to try them to see how they colour ..the pencils seem abit thinner than the polychromos..but they are really nice to use and nicely sharpened..just a pity they only do these in a tin of 48..

Having an addiction to coloured pencils once I discovered these I had to have them. Are softer and creamier than Polychromos. Less colours of course but a great addition for the toolbox. I really love how FC pencils match their other sets.

3.2.2018

I have the polychromos and these complement them totally. Each of the 48 colours matches a polychromo pencil, so with these being a thinner pencil they will get into the smaller areas with ease. Love them.
