Thus far Eyepet hasn't faired too well critically, gaining mediocre scores (an average 71 on metacritic). However, the reviews here on Amazon tell a different story and by and large the game has been well received by gamers themselves. Why is this? Firstly, I feel the critics have neglected to notice who this game is aimed at - while it can be enjoyed by the serious gamer (myself?!), primarily it is aimed at children and gamers who enjoy a more relaxed, social aspect of gaming (along the lines of Singstar etc). So, for a critic sitting at home, writing a review on their own, the game may seem dull (and probably I wouldn't play it by myself). However, get a friend or two to join in,or your kids (if you have them!), and eyepet comes to life - challenges that earn you prizes (clothes and games for your pet) as well as PS3 trophies, a mix of controller based games and Playstation Eye games, even drawing games where you draw a car/plane/robot and watch your eyepet copy it - eyepet has many different ways of surprising you.The challenges are where you will spend the basis of the game, you have four challenges a day to complete (though you can carry on after the four on the same day) up to 15 days. The challenges get more varied as your progress through the game, some can be tricky, but overall most are easy to medium in difficulty and, as mentioned, are a mix of games where you either use the dualshock controller or where you specifically use the Playstation Eye. You can also just play with your eyepet - feed, wash, play games with - outside of the challenges, just for fun. There are a couple of response issues at times, but generally these gan be fixed by adjusting the lighting in your room. All in all, Eyepet is a fun addition for Playstation owners, if your standard choice of gaming revolves completely around the likes of Uncharted, COD, FIFA/PES etc, then perhaps the game isn't for you. However, if you have children, or enjoy games where you can spend an hour getting a bright blue, fluffy animal dressed in a padded jacket and a bobble hat to jump through a hoop held up by a gold robot you drew yourself, then Eyepet is for you! If you don't have a Playstation camera (which is also useful in Singstar and LittleBigPlanet amongst others), you could do worse than to pick up this bundle pack.

I bought Eyepet a few days ago, lured in by the idea of a cute interactive pet and the £25 bundle price tag.To be honest, I'm not sure what I think. The game itself noticeably aimed at kids with how colourful everything is, along with the silly creepy professor - so to adults it may feel like one's brain is slowly melting.Gameplay can be fun to those of any age, it consists of lots of little 'challenges'. Feed it, wash it, style it, draw toys for it, play minigames with it. You'll have to be the judge of whether this will appeal to you. The game breaks things down into a 15-day programme (an hour a day) so things stay fresh. After this you may wish to trade it in, as the pet interaction on its own, whilst cute, isn't exactly thrilling.Be aware that if the camera isn't set up right things will prove tedious. It must be angled and positioned suitably in the right lighting. If not, you'll quickly get irritated with the camera poorly detecting the magic-card or trying to get you to physically move your magic-card into your floor to pick up cookies. Also one may find themselves, every now and then, accidentally angling the card so the camera can't see it (especially kids) but you'll get used to it.Provided the lighting/set-up is spot-on, the only area the game struggles is with drawings. You will actually need to pick up the camera, put the drawing on the floor, move the camera around until the borders all are green and hold it dead still for a few seconds. The bundle is definitely a good buy if you're in need of a microphone for online play with other games, are looking to use EyeCreate to make videos (free off the PSN store) or need a webcam (it can be used with Windows via third-party drivers). The quality of the webcam itself is excellent, at 640x480/30fps the capture is a little grainy, but there's no visible capture delay or movement blur. The audio clarity is also excellent - with my 5.1 system extremely loud it exhibited no clipping and sounded very 'full' - maybe due to the fact it has a '4 microphone array system'.So anyway, I'm gonna give this a solid four stars.

** Review by my daughter Katie, aged 14 **EyePet is a great, interactive game made for young kids. I have really enjoyed it throughout with all the games you can play with your pet.You can take memorable photos of your pet, and videos of the funny things it does. Also as the game progresses you can open up all different sorts of clothes and accessories you can add to your pet. Your pet doesn't seem to look like an actual pet at all, a cats body merged with a monkeys face, and a lemurs tale attached, but still it is very cute! You will be guided through with a professor kind of guy, and occasionally he will give you a note book to draw new things such as cars, planes and even robots! If you're lucky more toys!Mind you, it's a bit iffy getting it started with the drawings, because, you have to draw it yourself, so make sure you have a pad of paper with you, you have to make sure your drawing isn't too big, and will fit in the screen, and make sure the lighting is okay so that the camera can sense your drawing. When it reads you EyePet will actually mimic your drawing and bring them to life, and you actually use them during the games. Also included in the game is a card, it is very essential to the game as it is how you wash your pet, feed it and much more. The packaging is very nicely presented, it comes in a small box that features in the game from time to time, including a camera with a microphone (you can also use it for video chat) a game car and the actual game it's self. The camera is adjustable, depending on how big you room is, just remember to keep it facing the ground because that's where your pet likes to play. It is also useable with the PS3 Move which is a bonus.Over all I really enjoyed it, takes a few days getting use to but once you do you will have hours of fun all the way.PS I think it's easier than having a real pet, this one doesn't bite!

I bought this game initially for my 8 year old daughter but then decided to give it to my 4 year old daughter. Having watched them now play it I would say it was probably most suitable for somewhere in between these ages. My 4 year old enjoyed it very much but had trouble holding the Magic Card in the right direction and this could become frustrating. My 8 year old worked it out much quicker, as you would expect, but lost interest fairly quickly as the routines are really designed for younger children, or at least my experience of watching them play suggested.Setup was very simple, although I found the lighting had to be quite good to keep up the quality of the picture. The whole process is explained by a 'scientist' who pops up on video every now and then. Mercifully this is only fairly frequent in the early parts of the game, as I could imagine it becoming annoying.Overall the only major problems I found were to do with on-screen distractions. For instance if there was too much going on in the background or too many of the children wanting to become involved. This meant that the necessary tricks (or whatever) could not be easily performed to allow progression, as the game (Eye Pet) did not know what to react to. This may be improved by limiting the area that the camera can cover (which, thinking about it, is referred to in the video instructions, without actually saying why).I cannot comment on longevity as it has only been used over the last day or so, but this may well depend on the age of your child. All I can say is that my 4 year old still wants to play it whereas my 8 year old has now lost interest.

Let me say first of all that I purchased this as a birthday present for my grandson and he loves it. That's the bottom line. However, for my own part, having been involved with the electronics industry in the days when valves were the norm and the last word in technology was the transistor radio, I like to know how things work. I have to see a chain of events and be able to say, "Ah, yes, I see, that's how it's done." But I am gobsmacked with the level of technology that is involved in the Eyepet and I have reached the conclusion that it is operated by some form of witchcraft. Although my grandson was sitting on an empty floor, the TV screen clearly shows him stroking, caressing and playing with ET and Lassie's love child. The creature is seen to respond to his actions and movements and, try as I may, I could not equate what I was seeing to any form of thermoinic valve or transistor theory. So I watched him using it for an hour or so, then I retired to bed with a nice cup of cocoa. Now, I'm sure that there are people with wire-framed glasses and elbow patches on their jackets who will explain its operation at length in terms of and-gates and or-gates and other digital terms and I would nod sagely. They would probably tell me that there are better and more advanced games on the market that make the Eyepet look like TV ping pong but I don't care. My grandson likes it and I enjoy watching him with it.But most of all, after many, many years in the darkness, once again, I believe in Magic.

I bought this for my little sister (9 years old) a while back. It comes in a nice little pet shop style carry box, and inside you get the new Playstation Eye (camera with built in microphone), the game with the 'magic card', and some instruction manuals. The game itself is really good, i'm 22 and always find myself joining in with my sis :s There are loads of things you can do, and you unlock more stuff by completing the challenges. Some of them are pretty hard so you probably will have to help out the younger kids. It's like playing the Wii, but in a 'reality' kind of way. It's cool how you can draw a picture (like a car or plane), show it to the camera, and the game will turn it into 3D,so you can drive/fly it around with your pet sitting on it. It's not the deepest game around, but because of all the new stuff you unlock, it stops you from getting bored. My sister is hooked on it.You should have at least a 2 by 2 metre area clear for the camera to point at, ideally 3 by 3 metres. Also the room has to be nice and bright, halogen downlights are perfect.Oh yeah make sure you download the EyeCreate software from the Playstation Store, you can use it to create and edit videos and pictures with fun/cool/stupid effects etc with the camera.P.S. this used to be £25.

I bought this for my son after watching videos of it from the PSN nteowrk and I cannot be more pleased. The game is easy to play, it will explain everything via a Pet Care Center Doctor all you need to know as you progress. It is a fine adition to the playstation eye, you can buy new outfits and get some free ones from the PSN network, you will gain more as you progress through the "challenges" for the day, there are 15 days worth of challenges, with four challenges per day. You can gain medals for each one, Gold medal being the aim of course. With your pet you can style his clothing, hair colour, hair length. You can as you progress play games with your pet e.g. bowling, feed him, give him a shower then you can scan your pet to see how healthy he is and send this off to the healthcare center and they will send you a "gift" at times. There are games that involve you creating vehicles for your pet e.g. a car, which the pet will ride on and you can direct him around the screen. There is also trophy support for this game so if you are into that you will gain quite a few as you get one for each day of challenges passed plus others. Also, a good thing is that if you have the Playstation Move, there is a free upgrade to the Move Edition.

bought this for my eight year old sons birthday, and so far its been a hit with the whole family!you set the camera up,focused in front of you,and u have to hatch an egg,by tapping and rolling it untllthe cute monkey-type-thing breaks out.there are various toys and outfits(!) for it (ours is called mikey!) and once you get used to not moving too fastfor the collision detection -its quite amazing to watch on screen.everyone that has seen us give mikey a shower, feed him or get him to jump up have been impressed.if u roll an item acrossthe floor,he will jump over, clap your ands suddenly,he gets a fright -some expressions he pulls are brilliant!the so called magic card is to xray him to see if hes hungry, ill, etc and also as a tool (ie hairdrier)whenplaying games.ten pin bowling is ace,as he rolls into a ball and u aim him at pins on the screen!dont know about long term appeal, but for the price, its well worth it.addition -several months down the line - we can now sing songs -twinkle twinkle little star being a favorite -and mikey blooming well sings it back - damn thats good!! he now copies drawings that u show to the camera and plays with them!!

Well I recieved the game and camera this morning as a supprise present for my 18 year old daughter. She loves it, the game and camera were simple to set up on my PS3. The tutorial was straight forward and easy to follow, the game is brilliant for all ages, even I was getting into it (i turned 42 last friday). Our little pet followed us and the camera working in real time, so no game lag. A few of my contacts have enquired via txt on PS3 what I thought about the game, and I give it a big thumbs up. I was a little apprehensive as I was not totally impressed with the PS2 version of the eyetoy games, being 2D. But this game is warm and in 3D. A bonus is the added trophy collection to the game.My only doubts are what Sony will charge for DLC (downloadable content), Little Big Planet has managed to balance it about 50/50 with free and payable content. Lets all hope in the current economic climate and Christmas upon us that Sony do us all a favour and give a load of DLC for free. Otherwise a lot of unhappy Christmas stockings will be empty of Sony products and full of Microsoft gifts instead.

Bought for my daughter (6) - honest its not for me! Took quite a long time to get it set up correctly. Fortunately I tried to get it all set up prior to her opening it for her birthday - as I think she would have lost interest waiting for me to set it up!!That said - once you have it right - its a great little game - and certainly different to anything else she plays with. It would probably be better for children a little bit older as there are quite a few instructions to follow - and currently requires me to be on hand to help her...The novelty factor alone makes it worth it for the price - I think as we get to play it more - there will be more things you can do with your eyepet - so it'llkeep everyone entertained for a while.Overall worth having - I'd give it a 7 out of 10!

Santa gave this to my 7 year old and between him and his 12 year old sister the PS3 has never had such a workout. Well done Sony on this game. It really does engage with the kids. Keeps them quiet(ish) and is amusing to watch. Plus the kids tidy the room before each game play. Now only if Sony could come up with a game that would encourage the kids to clean their rooms, get ready for school on time and go to bed early! If I was going to crticise anything it would be the sometimes sluggish nature of the response of feedback when using hand gestures and the grainy quality of the camera image. But I think that's a Dad talking rather than a noticeable criticism from the kids.Definetely worthbuying!

I have read some comments here which do cover most of the aspects with this game. There is one issue though, which in my opinion was not stressed enough. When you see that the game is suitable for 3 year old and over then I would think I am not, as a parent, very needed during the playing time.It is not the case. Guided tutorial is missing in majority of tasks you are to accomplish. I would expect a narrator to read the instructions which are displayed on the screen. You need to have reading skills to be able to play EyePet on your own!So for my five year old daughter it is a problem and I am needed all the time, or, at least once until she goes through every level, memorising it then.

Bought this at the insistence of my 6 year old son who'd seen it advertised on TV! Was a bit dubious at first, but very easy to set up and I can't believe the technology and the things he can make it do - play with, shower him, feed him, get him to play bowls, build then ride in a car ... all in front of us on the TV with my son in the picture too (and my feet usually as if I bend down to join in - the picture makes me realise I'm too old and too wide now to be seen on TV!). Fantastic fun for boys and girls - my 9 year old neice loves it, but my 13 year old and 10 year old boys aren't too keen - so maybe one for the younger boys, and any age girls (including this 43 year old one...!)

Wow! I must confess, i purchased this with my two daughters in mind, but i've found myself loving it as much as them. This game is absolutely stunning, gaming is an experience and with your children this is a magical one. When our Eye Pet hatched out of it's egg, their faces were as excited as if it was christmas morning. There are plenty of challenges to complete and kids will love feeding, washing, playing and training the Eye Pet. For Adults alone, this game will not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you're children love animals, this is a brilliant game to play with them.
