I pretty much like everything about this pad.- It rolls up small because it's not "self inflating" material- It has a muted but pleasant color- It offers a lot of padding so you can adjust your comfort level and provides warmth in winter conditions- It's full length so my feet aren't hanging off the end- The valves are easy to use- It's lighter than other equivalentsI have only used the "self inflating" Thermarest pads until I looked at this at an REI. They didn't have the full size in stock and couldn't guarantee they could get it in time for a Mt. Whitney ascent which was surprising so I ordered it on Amazon along with the Medium Exped pillow.I haven't had a beef with Thermarest and they served their purpose well but I did find I had to blow them up pretty full to get any comfort because they are thinner and that also made them somewhat stiff. I wasn't as comfortable on uneven surfaces as I would have liked and really slid off them when I was on sloped surfaces because they are smooth topped. They also aren't really "self inflating" but only partially self inflating. You still need to blow them up. It just saves you some time but this makes them bulkier and somewhat heavier. The Exped has a ridged structure with tall padding so I can adjust the comfort level and because it's ridged I don't slide as easily when the ground is sloped from side to side. My limbs get caught between the ridges so I don't go moving in on my climbing partner's side of the tent.I used this in combination with the Thermarest Z Lite closed foam pad as I was on snow or cold rock on Mt. Whitney and the combo was really warm and much more comfortable than my other self inflating Thermarest. I did end up sliding slightly on uneven ground but not hardly as much as on my Thermarest. Along with my Marmot Col EQ -20F bag I was toasty and comfortable.I read one review where they harped on the fact that it's a welded seam between the ridges and not truly connected which makes it feel like you're floating but I have no clue what they're talking about. This was super comfortable to me and I didn't get any "floating" feeling. Maybe I haven't used one of those super cush pads but this was great for me.The only minus is the time it takes to blow it up which to me seems much more than the Thermarest I have. It only takes a minute or minute and a half as they say but it does seem like a fairly long time in reality. I guess it's only minor though unless you're on an expedition moving from one camp to another each day acclimatizing. Plus it wasn't so bad even at altitude when I thought shortness of breath may be a factor due to thinner air. Makes me want to buy the pillow pump but that's an extra piece to haul around and after looking at it in an REI it doesn't seem to be that comfortable as a pillow. Minor issue but it knocks the rating down to about a 4.7 star for me.

I used this under my sleeping bag on a 5 nite trip in the Sierras. I works as advertised: very well. I didn't do a good job clearing away all the rocks before pitching the tent so there were a few peanut size protrusions sticking up. The inflatable pad completely swallowed them up. My older Thermarest would not have done so as it's too thin. You have to blow it up manually (4-5 minutes, it's easy) and the air from you lungs is warm. After the pad has cooled down the air pressure will drop so you may need another puff. YMMVWhen fully inflated I found it was a bit "balloon-like" and needed a small bit of deflation. Hint: Take advantage of the separate one-way inflate and deflate valves by first leaving the inflate valve open after inflation. The air pressure will remain high due to the one-way nature of the valve. Next, lay on it with your sleeping bag to see how it feels. It will probable feel too full and bouncy. If so, reach "up" to the open valve port and BRIEFLY tap the valve. (Note -- by "valve" I'm referring to the flat membrane just inside the open valve port. You can reach it with your little finger.) This tap lets out a puff of air. Repeat until you get comfortable. Finally, insert the plug into the valve and you're done. The inflatable nature makes the SynMat a lot lighter than a Thermarest. And since it has a bit of down inside the chambers you get very good insulation from the cold ground.

Was a bit unsure of paying so much for what looked like a £2.99 lilo but I took a chance.I wild camped with this in Scotland in winter. Wasn't the coldest, around 3c at night with quite a wind chill on top. Inside tent on this I was extremely warm and slept like a log. It is very small and light, feels like it will last fairly well, easy to inflate and the best couple of nights sleep I've ever had.The uneven ground made it even more invaluable as this levels out your sleeping surface fairly well. My camp mate was on a hard roll and didn't fare so well.

Just used my new mat for the first time and had the most comfortable night under canvass since starting camping It keeps you well insulated from the ground so no waking up in the middle of the night with a cold back. I was comfy on my side and face down too. No problems with slipping off it and my 6ft frame was not a problem either. Yes its not cheap but the difference it makes to a good nights sleep is worth it. I found it very easy to inflate/deflate, its very light and packs down really small. Recommended.

Have had this for a few months now, and let me begin with, WOW! Exped knows there gear! During cold/chill nights, sleep on terra cotta side. Hot and humid? Sleep on the slate side... Simple! Match it with a schnozzle bag and BOOM! Instant inflate with a compression sack for clothing! Need a pillow? Not with this pad... Reverse the bag, fill with a sweat shirt and tie to bag and instant pillow! Stiff as needed.

I've slept on this pad for dozens of nights now, and it's as comfortable as you could hope for. It packs up nice and small, also, slightly bigger than a nalgene bottle. Blowing up two of these is enough to get me pretty winded (granted, I'm usually doing it at 9,000+ft), but not having a pump or self-inflation is part of what makes the pad pack down so small.

Very comfortable mat, much lighter and with a smaller pack size than my old one. I did notice after 24 hours it had lost some air, but this is easily topped up. Worth investing in one if the exped inflating devices to save having to use your lungs, and avoid blowing moist air into the mat.

I have just used the exped on a week long camping trip and it was excellent, lightweight, well made easy to inflate, full size and i have no problem recommending it...
