Electronics and soldering are only a hobby for me, but professionals recommend using a soldering station of a known brand, so I decided to try the Ersa Analog 60 (I couldn't find a good but cheap Weller). I bought it for about 135 euro.I had only used cheap soldering irons until now and the difference is huge. The Ersa is quite fast. The led blinks after 10-15 seconds (set at 300C) and the station is ready for soldering. The included 832 chisel tip is perfect. Good soldering is impossible with a sharp tip. I didn't know that until I saw a video from Dave Jones EEVblog on YouTube. I definitely agree on that now.The cable that connects the actual soldering iron is very soft and light and quite comfortable to use.Unfortunately, the soldering iron holder has no lid and even though that's not a problem, that large opening on the top looks awful.I've also bought a 842CD tip and it's quite fat. It's another chisel tip, but it has a very fat body. That's probably more suitable for rougher soldering jobs (eg to solder the heat sink or tab of a voltage regulator).Build quality is quite good. No fancy leds or LCDs, only the essential components, and that's ok.

I bought one of these as NOS for a bargain price (£55) but it's surely worth the asking price anyway. It is a simple and reliable iron, no fancy bells and whistles, it just gets on with the job and does it competently. A couple of things it does miss out on though: there is no 'sleep' mode whereby the temperature is reduced when the iron is placed back in the holder (so it stays at full temperature which will accellerate oxidation of the tip if you forget and leave it powered up). Also, the (genuine Ersa) tips are relatively expensive, and it's really not worth buying cheap clones as they will not last as long and not perform as well. With a 60w power output and the ability to maintain tip temperatures it can tackle the majority of soldering jobs,I also bought a short/stubby 0842ED chisel tip mainly for the job of soldering to ground planes where this type of tip is able to transfer more heat quickly. Prior to this I had (actually still have) an old Weller 45w non-controllable soldering iron which simply didn't have the power to solder where there were large heat sinks involved, this Ersa 60 is noticeably more effective in such situations.
