The last plate sander I bought was Wickes cheapest and it lasted about a couple of years before sparks started flying out of it (good fun really, until I realised I had about 10 more metres of skirting to key). Now it's in the bin with their name on it.The best thing about the cheapo Wickes sander was the on/off switch and speed setting knob, none of this trigger nonsense. The good thing about an on off switch is that you can hold it in various ways and places to find a spot that doesn't vibrate as much - sanders can be a bugger on the wrists after an hour or so.I know what you're thinking: "You dope, there's a locking button on the trigger" but Be honest,do these actually work or do they annoy the hell out of you by popping out every now and then?Never again for me.I can kinda see the thought behind the "dead mans' handle" trigger on a lot of power tools, but on a sander?Like seriously, how dangerous can it be?"Oh no, it's slowly exfoliating a bit of my hand, whatever shall I do in the intervening minute or so before it breaks the skin?"I would have bought a Makita (they're generally pretty good for the money) but didn't see one with an on/off switch.I also didn't want to get a really pricey one because I'm getting on a bit. We're not quite at the "Don't buy any green bananas" advice stage yet, but I also don't need something that's going to last for decades.A fairly cheap one for me please. This is the first Einhell tool I've ever bought and it has a speed knob and an on/off switch, so it starts on a positive. It's also just a bit heavier than my last one which is both good and ill.The good is that the extra mass damps vibrations a bit.The ill is it's a bit more effort to move about. For skirting though, it's good as you're going to slide it along the floor anyway. If you're doing a lot of doors (in situ) it might prove a bit more of a workout, don't get me wrong though, this thing isn't a dumbbell. The other benefit of a speed control knob is you can find a speed where the unit doesn't vibrate as much. This is the only setting I ever use and varies from model to model. What can I say, it's not deafening and it does the job well - a good amount of movement in the pad.Last but by no means least it seems to hold the sheet of scratch pretty firmly. The first hour I used it, the sheet didn't move at all - bonus! It would be a case of Saul Goodman, but I cannot comment on the units longevity - I've been using it for a day.It comes in a big, solid plastic case and I don't need this, it's going to live on a shelf in my shed next to the belt sander, but what can you do?So far I like it, especially for the price.
