Earth Defense Force was originally a japanese game released under the simple series of low budget game titles by it's publisher D3, at least so says Wikipedia. What I do know is that Insect Armageddon is great fun despite it's lack of production values. So what are the games about? Nothing and everything. The earth is being invaded by an alien force referred to as "Ravagers". They come in many forms with giant robots called Hectors, carrier space ships, gun ships as well as modified terran life forms such as giant ants, spiders, ticks, wasps etc. You play the role of a generic unnamed Earth Defense Force Soldier tasked with defending the earth. That's pretty much it.The game plays out across a mission like structure. You choose from one of four classes with various abilities including jet packs, shields and portable turrets. Each class can be leveled up with battle experience giving access to bigger and often stranger weapons, some of which need to be found or purchased, my favorite is the overwhelmingly powerful, stupid and hilarious Pesticide Mortar. Your chosen class is then dropped into it's open world location and sets off. Most of the game has no real objectives, go here, kill that, go there kill that etc the whole while having some (intentionally i'm sure) bad dialogue and comic voice acting chatting over the EDF radio. None of that is important though because the fun is having a huge wave of killer ants charging at you in large swarms while you let rip with your weapons often leveling buildings, destroying cars and generally causing carnage, everything is destructible. It's simple mindless fun, nothing wrong with that sometimes. As fun as the game is the main story is really pretty short and just sort of stops out of nowhere. Feels like only half a game considering the previous game had around 60 missions and with more terrain variety than this instalment which is a let down.I played the third game in the series, 2017 on the Xbox 360 as my series introduction and it was perhaps one of the best co-op games i've had the pleasure of playing and Insect Armageddon only amps that up by adding three player online co-op though bots can fill in for missing players. I was worried this would make it too easy but with various difficulty modes, especially Inferno it's still a challenging game. The visuals and production are a pretty big step up from it's predecessor, better textures more detail etc. It's still pretty budget though but does the job. My biggest let down was the frame rate, it ran fine. Weird complaint I guess but the overwhelming slowdown from sheer numbers or enemy size added to the B-Movie feel in 2017 so I kind of missed it though most people would call it an improvement I suppose.Would I recommended this game to people? Absolutely, it's great fun, feels almost retro. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not, it's an aquired taste because it does the opposite of what most games strive for now days so I can understand someone disliking it but if you get hooked....EDF! EDF! EDF!+ Simple Mindless Fun.+ Fantastic fun Co-Op.+ Distinct classes to choose from.+ Variety of odd weapons to use.- Story mode just kind of...stops.

Gameplay is simple, clear an area and progress. You wil almost never be able to rest as action is intense and enemies wil never let off. This game is essentially starship troopers set on earth, the B-movie feel is done perfectly. There are mission objectives in the loosest sense as they will generally be destroy everything in this area. The reason I find this superior to previous entries in this respect, is because this allows for you to utilise the sandbox city to its maximum. You get to run around in giant areas with vehicles and mechs to utilise when you get to the new objective. The game is a case of quality versus quantity, the game is a much more solid product with decent visuals,no slowdown or frame rate issues and lagless online. All issues that plagued previous entries. This game is best played in co-op either local or online, the campaign can be played with AI bots but they are never a replacement for the fun you can have playing with your friends. There is a mass of weapons 300+ in all, 4 characters classes and many reasons to play this game over and over. Weapons are bought with in game currency, and you can only access weapons after reaching a specific level. All characters have different weapon sets. There are 3 difficulty settings, but the higher difficulties are literally impossible unless you play through every difficulties campaign to access better weapons. The true ending of the game can only be seen at max difficulty. There is inclusion of split screen co-op, 3 play campaign online, 6 player survivalFrom hearing all that you should be able to establish if this game is for you. I think its worth checking gameplay videos to see if this is a style of game you'd like. Its an extremely unique experience that you will either love or hate. Keep in mind this is a budget title and came out at a budget price, so the graphics might not be up to the standard of other games on the market but the gameplay experience is very solid. I personally found the graphics decent and thought it put some games with bigger budgets, to shame in more then a few ways.

loads of fun,but i didn't like the levelling up system, that was just kinda annoying, and they really limited the weapons you had compared to the previous game, plus the large hectors were just tedious instead of fun, and the ending was SO disappointing, it should have gone out with a BANG like in 2017 instead it just petered out, they really should have made a unique enemy for that last mission, but overall the series has been improved

A really good game. As you get points and start to build your weaponry for you and your two team mates things heat up fantastically. You can end up with massive Nuclear battlefield arena nukes, just don't get caught in the blast.Good story line graphics and game play. One of the hidden jewels here I think. Plenty of shoot them up, run and shoot them up even more. You gotta get this one if you like blasting the billio out of things

The title is kind of ironic, the game never shoots for an AAA status and certainly not aiming to a commerical type of game, EDF is all about having fun while playing and its a japanized type of game with some extremly corny dialog. If youre after something diffrent and one game to play with your friends (3 player online co-op) then this should be the game you get.

this game is a great feat. although not as fun as the last installment of the series. this does add more such as the four armour classes. well worth the money.

I do not consider it a popular game but we was weirdly addicted to the first one but this has been a huge improvement and hopefully will become a big game
