Review update - October 2016Having had two children use this bike over the past 9 months, I thought it worthwhile updating my review with a couple of reflections:- The bike is great and I am really happy with it. The good-sized wheels with inflatable tyres, and smooth running wheel hubs, means that my 2 year old boy can almost keep up with his 5 year old sister (who is using a good pedal bike without stabilisers).- There is a design flaw with the seat post. The metal cylindrical seat post appears to be just glued into a drilled hole in the wooden frame. One day when my boy fell off the bike, the seat post came loose and started twisting around when in use. For such a key part of the bike,I think this is a poor oversight - a bolt through the wooden frame would make sense to ensure this couldn't happen. To fix it, I used 'No More Nails' glue around the base of the seat post and left it for a day. It has been fine since but I expect it will come loose with another knock.I still think it is a great bike but I have reduced my rating from 5 to 4 stars in this update.__________________________________Original review - January 2016This is a beautifully crafted balance bike that looks and feels great. The frame is wooden, with metal front post, handlebars and seat post. It features proper tyres (requiring a pump - not included).I do not agree with the suggested age range of 1.5 to 3.5 years. Even with the saddle at its lowest, my 2 year old boy couldn't put his feet flat on the floor - I don't think it will fit him for another six months, and he is not especially small. My 4 and half year old girl has really enjoyed this bike though - she's a bit older than recommended but she can just about use it with the saddle at its highest. So from my experience, I'd say 2-4 is an appropriate age range. It is a brilliant, well-made bike that I expect will last a long time and be passed on.A couple of minor points:- no valve caps for the tyres are included, which is odd- the saddle could be better padded - my girl complained of a sore bum on this more than her previous balance bike- I worry that the design of the frame around the back wheel means the bike will never be truly balanced because there is more weight on one side of the bike - but in practice this doesn't seem to be an issue.

Wow! The picture's just don't do this bike justice at all. Our toddler, who sits smack in the middle of the age range for this bike (although like the rest of us, is tall for his age) absolutely loves this. He was a bit bemused by the lack of pedals when he compared it to my grandson's and his mum's mountain bikes, but that evaporated when he realised that he just needed to push along with his feet and since then he hasn't been off it all weekend riding it around in the garden. Really easy to put together as the bike is virtually fully assembled. This bike just screams quality from the birch veneer frame to the wheels, from the handlebar to the seat and has that 'looks like it will last forever'feel - as one of the other reviewers has said I can see this being passed around family members and future generations as each one outgrows it and the next one comes along. It cleans up really well too, which is useful in the current weather conditions. A really good first bike that really does have that wow factor when you put it together and see it ridden for the first time. Given our son has only come off it over the weekend to go to bed and insists that he keeps it in his room (probably thinks I'll have a go with it) a definite winner.

Exceeded expectations! The bike arrived excellently packaged and from that moment it was obvious this was a quality product. The bike required minimum assembly and all tools and very clear instructions are provided, and within minutes was ready for a test ride. I can't comment exactly with regard to the comfort and riding position, but if the smile on my grandson's face was any indication, then it was definitely 5 star. The bike has a very retro feel and instantly reminded me of the American made Indian motorcycle with it's faux leather seat and stud detail. If you like toys that have a quality look and feel, this is for you. Whilst I think it is probably at the higher end of the price scale,it is worth it. It is very pleasing on the eye and I would say, falls in the same category as 'Radio Flyer' toys, which are more expensive, but are actually quite pleasant to look at when abandoned around the house by little ones. What is lovely is the laminated wood fabrication that oozes finest quality - and is of course a bit unusual and turns the mundane into art.Overall a toy that edges over into something more. It would actually look good mounted in a frame.

This is so different in style it is more a piece of art than a child`s first bike!On first opening the box you will find this bike is almost assembled, there are 2 items to fit. One being the aluminium handlebar with firm rubber grips, and the other the front wheel. There are 3 diffrerent sized Allen keys included, nothing else is required to get it up and running. It really is so easy, no stickers etc. to be added. The wooden frame is beautifully crafted, I am truly impressed by the workmanship. Front forks are made from the same quality wood as the rest of the frame. The frame curves around to one side of the back wheel where it attaches leaving the other side completely exposed.(Like a motor cycle with a single exhaust). The seat is faux leather with studs, fully adjustable for height changes. In front of the seat, on the frame, is an embossed Bonsai tree with Japanese symbols below.Everything about this bike screams quality and I can see it being passed down from one grandchild to another. One tiny criticism is the lack of dustcaps on the wheels, on a bike at this price one would expect them.

No doubt this is a beautifully constructed kids' balance bike with a quirky wooden frame. It's a looker for sure but simple in design to be fit for purpose. There's clearly attention to detail for all its limited parts to the nice chunky wheels, the faux leather seat and sturdy little handle bars.Be mindful in the range descriptions the Bonsai is placed at 1.5 to 3.5 yrs. For the borrowed two year old it was just a little too big and unwieldy but for the home grown three yr old it was a whizz. Be prepared for it not to look as pristine and neatly honed once it's spent a while in a winter garden though...For the parents who want premium toys and kit for the children this is a no brainer. But given balance bikes can be had for a third of the price and offer just the same fun - a three year old really doesn't dig good design and construction - and money's tight there's nothing more that this bike will do other than look good and be a talking point for others.Easy to recommend and won't disappoint; a great present too.

This is a really great product. It's a toddler's balance bike, the idea of which is to encourage toddlers into the saddle by giving them a bike they can learn to balance with and push along with their feet, before graduating to bikes with pedals. The bike looks amazing. Hand made from laminated birch it looks more like a sculpture than a bike. It is very easy to assemble, indeed it comes almost fully assembled. Our toddler is just over 2, quite tall for his age, and it fits him easily. The seat height has plenty of adjustment, so it should fit him for some time to come. The wheels have good fat tyres on them for a smooth ride, the steering is responsive, the whole thing easy to use.It fits easily in the boot of the car for taking to the park. It looks great, and is a lot.As some others have mentioned, in the instructions it claims that there are child proof valve dust caps supplied, but no dust caps were to be found anywhere, child proof or not.Still 5 stars though for this great bike.

In a world of disposable, plastic toys, the Bonsai Balance Bike stands out in the best possible way. As a keen cyclist it is tempting for me to talk about how the bike handles and the amount of flex in the frame, but given the size of the bike, it's probably not appropriate! This was a present for my Godson and from the moment he unwrapped it (with the help of his parents), the quality shone through. Dead easy to put together and within minutes we had a fully mobile two and a bit year old. A little bit of help was required for the first few tries, but he was quickly up and running. What is surprising is how quickly the bike seems to go, but haven't had any problems (so far)with not stopping in time. The bike is really sturdy and beautifully well made, and while in a sense wood seems an odd choice to make a bike out of, there's something "just right" about it. I'm sure this will last and last, and tears will be shed (by me at least) when it's outgrown.

In reality the wood of this bike is slightly darker than in the photo, nonethless it is honestly the most beautiful bike I've ever seen! Our toddler has just turned 2 (albeit almost the same height as our 3 yo niece) and as per the instructions when seated can have both feet flat on the floor with a slight bend of the knee.It was very easy to assemble - even with the toddler "helping" - it comes with different alan keys for the handlebar (one piece through a bracket) and the front wheel (the back wheel was already attached) and is just gorgeous from its chunky little tyres to it's lovely brown leather seat.

This balance bike oozes quality - in fact it's the finest bike I've ever owned or used. The bike has been designed and assembled by the manufacturer with obvious love and attention to detail. Having had three kids who all went through the stabilisers to no-stabilisers transition, this is much easier as they can get the hang of balancing without having to lift both feet off the ground to peddle. An absolutely beautiful item that goes to show that products made for kids can be stylish, modern, well built and safe all at the same time. And made in the UK too.
