I chose this in preference to similar tools of other brands, some of which are considerably cheaper. I had once used one of the cheaper alternatives belonging to a friend and found it to be not completely reliable, but it may have seen some hard use (or abuse) in his hands. I have used other Draper tools and mostly found them to be of high quality. This is a tool requiring a good grip not only to use but to unlock the safety catch and open the jaws. Crimping uses four points of contact on each side and is very secure so I cannot understand why some reviewers would contra-indicate. However, with a connector between the jaws, releasing it requires even more pressure. There is an adjustable setting (on '-'by default) which can be changed to one of four alternate positions, 'A' presumably for Average in the middle, '+' at the extreme right and two intermediate and unmarked settings but there is no information on the packaging concerning its use. If for grip pressure, the '+' setting would need a Goliath! Draper's Technical team subsequently confirmed that its purpose is as believed.

If you have bits of cable that you want to crimp things on to and you really need to impress people with your prowess, get one of these, lifetime guarantee, what more could a self respecting cable crimper want? You may think that after this stunning review, that 4 * is a bit harsh however, they are not made of a precious metal [ok they would be too soft anyway] and they were not free. I have to say the delivery was ridiculously quick, the postman was virtually knocking on my door as I pressed "pay" button. They may have been waiting at the top of my drive, in anticipation of me purchasing these crimps. these are so good I would buy another pair but I don't need to. That would just be showing off really.I even backed off the tension of the grips as they were more than adequate at crimping my 2.5mm cables.

I bought these following having used an ideitical pair belonging to someone else on a job. They really do make a good crimp. I have spent some time experimenting with mine and setting the tension up - which is a bit of a fiddle - but well worth it. I can now crimp solid and stranded cables accurately and strongly - so strong to the point that during my very un-scientific 'wiggle tests' and 'pull tests', i eventually got it set so that it was impossible to extract the cable without snapping it, whilst not crushing it!The back card in the packaging is very useful as it demonstrates a diagram of a succesful crimp and also has a chart on telling you the diameters of crimps in relation to cablesize. As mentioned by others they reuire strength to use - but if you want a good crimp thats the cost!

This is one serious tool. It not only looks right but feels right. The sheer weight alone gives an indication of the build quality. Draper is a long established name in the tool trade and this tool can in no way be compared with the cheap flimsy "side-cutter" type of crimper which is not even up to DIY standard. This is a tool for professionals and is likely to be the last one you will ever buy (unless you want two) as it is quite clearly designed to last several lifetimes. Very happy indeed with my purchase and Amazon's delivery speed is second to none. Do not consider this tool however unless you have a fairly strong grip.

A simple strong tool that feels right in hand and does the job well.It may seem a tad expensive but is built to last and you won't ever need to buy another.Other ratchet crimpers on offer including one with blue covered handles that looks almost identical are half the price but are less than half the weight of the Draper - a sign of the build quality of this item.Bad or loose electrical joints will lead to failure and extra time in tracing the fault plus the possibility of an electrical fire so don't scrimp on the crimps - or the crimper !This is a solid reliable tool and is worth the extra bit of cash.

It's solid, well made, and rather heavy. It crimps well (so far - I've only made 5 or 6 crimps with it - will update my review when I've made heavier use of it), but I'm happy so far.One niggle is that the ratchet release lever between the handles is quite awkward to use (although a flat-bladed screwdriver makes it a lot easier).EDIT: have used this tool for several jobs now, and it's worked brilliantly every time, with a variety of crimp sizes (some mains wiring while re-doing the kitchen, some thinner vehicle wiring, etc). Definitely happy with it.

Great tool, reasonable price. This crimps well and securely, gives great confidence in the crimp.Crimps the terminals with the round circular tubular trunks.I also like that you can place the crimp piece in the tool and hold it firmly but lightly and then position the wire to suit your needs.I had no need to adjust or change the settings on the tool -though I see that others have mentioned the possibility. It does require a strong clamping force, but most adults should be able to cope with this.Absolute must-have tool for crimping.

I had to do some wiring in the door looms of my car to add electric mirrors. This is the first time I've had to do any crimping and this crimper did the job perfectly. Before trying this I had a go with a cheap crimper that came with a tool kit, it was pretty useless. The ratchet on this makes a massive difference, it is also a decent size so you can get a decent grip on it. You need to give it a really hard squeeze to complete the crimp, it can end up a little painful if you are doing dozens of them one after another.

These work as well as a far more expensive set I've used at work. For DIY/hobby use they are spot on. The crimp jaws are removable, but I haven't yet found any replacement or alternative sets made by Draper. I may try some from another manufacturer in this tool, if they fit, when the need arises. The force/level of crimp is adjustable. You need a reasonable grip to use these, but far less than required by the cheap flat plate non-ratchet style. Meets my expectations, and performs the intended function.

Solid connection made on second attempt so pretty foolproof really. First one was a bit wonky and loose but crimping with the sleeving entering the colour coded side gave a rock solid (and straight!) result. Insulation and conductor are gripped firmly and neatly. No wire stripper but I prefer to use a Klein narrow nose tool for that. Inexpensive tool to give consistent pressure. Not many instructions though. Give the handles a squeeze to release them or slide the latch between the handles ;)

Bought to crimp some connectors on motorcycle wiring, was wondering why all my bullet/spade connectors were so dodgey, simply wasn't using the correct tool to crimp them. Effortless to crimp, and made a great, strong, professional looking job of it. Originally purchased in the hopes it would crimp "Superseal" type waterproof connectors you find quite commonly on Amazon and other websites as their branded crimps are £35 odd, hopefully will remember to update my review when they arrive!

Study piece of kit; easy to use and understand. Far better than the cheaper versions about - worth spending the extra money even if you only use it occasionally. Some people swear by the use of a soldered joint; problem with soldered joints is that they do become brittle and then the joint will fail. A properly crimped joint will last for years. Worth 'wasting' a few crimps until you get the hang of the tool but pretty easy to use and the joints will be permanent. Treat yourself!!

Took me a minute or two to realise that the crimper automatically releases by giving it a final squeeze. This might be obvious but I found that the best crimps were made by ensuring that the little join on the connector was at right angles to the jaws so that it crimped over as shown in the diagram on the back of the packet. Had a few goes before I got it right and then no problem. Incidentally, I found it impossible to move the adjusting wheel but it wasn't necessary.

Makes a good crimp as long as the tension is set correctly - don't be tempted to loosen it for an easy action as a poor connection may result. A strong grip is required but the adjustment is very useful when crimping "in between" or solid wire sizes. Since the jaws open further than really necessary, there is room for them to have improved the leverage (and gained my extra star!)Appears to be a well made tool - just keep up the wrist exercises!!

Generally a good product at a good price. It does seem to produce a strong crimp though I've found that sometimes I need to crimp once at the medium setting then re-crimp at the next lower setting. My only real gripe is that when the locking grip isn't compressed to its maximum the only way to release the handles is to press, on a very hard to reach catch, between the handles. This really needs to be redesigned. Some instructions would help too.
