I played the demo and at first I was thinking it seemed a bit too easy and the characters, especially the enemies were a bit too childish looking, however, I continued with the demo and I am so glad I did because this game is amazing and I ended up buying the full game. I found the music that is played when you are walking around to be a bit annoying at first but you can turn this down or off altogether via the options menu. The game has a good story which is vital for these types of games and the characters are all unique with their own personalities, it is also a good looking game, it does not push the boundaries of amazing graphics but it is still a very good looking game.I mentioned I thoughtthe game was easy and it is at first but does get tougher as you play through which is to be expected really, there is a good levelling up system which is not too complicated and there are plenty of upgrades to armour and weapons as you progress through the game.I like the battle system, as you only choose the options for the main character you control whilst the rest of your party will all automatically attack the enemy, sometimes there is your character and another 4 in your party all fighting together at the same time. You do choose how each of your party level up and what weapons and armour they use so you are in control of the party. I like the fact that mostly you get to choose when to fight, if you see an enemy you will only engage in a fight if you walk right up to them, you can however walk past them if want but the more battles you have gives you more experience points to help you level up.The save points are dotted throughout the world by way of churches or priests and statues at camp fires, there is also auto saving along the way. When you are at a camp fire you will unlock a forge that allows you to upgrade weapons or armour or build new ones, again easy to use and a nice little touch. There are shops and traders throughout to buy things like potions, medicines, weapons, armour etc.A nice little touch to this game is when you load up a save, it gives you a brief summary of what has gone on and where you are up to, this is uselful if you haven't played for a few days and forgot what you were meant to do, other games should take note of this very useful idea. This game is huge and at the time of writing I am only about 16 hours in and I've barely scratched the surface, I have read reports of people saying it can take anywhere from 70 to 100 hours to complete, everyone plays at their own pace so it will be different for everyone. There is an option to play the game in a 2D version if you like a bit of nostalgia, this wasn't for me but some might like it to relive their youth of the late 80s or 90s.All the characters in the game speak, except for the main character you control throughout the game which I still find bit strange but you get used to it, some of the characters voices can be a bit annoying and cringy but again you just get used to it.If you are looking for a game that will keep you entertained and give you value for money, this is the game. If you don't mind the childish looking enemies which still look good, then you will spend many hours in this game and have a great adventure along the way.Easily my favourite game on the Switch.

Dragon Quest 11 is an excellent JRPG and one that will surely satisfy fans of the series, as well as newcomers. The graphics are beautiful, there is a rich and varied open world to explore and a cast of fantastic, memorable and engaging characters. There's an awful lot to enjoy and I spent 70 hours just playing through the main story, without feeling like it was a chore. Admittedly, act 2 forces you to revisit most of the places you visited in act 1, rather than offering many new areas to explore, but you don't mind because the personality of the game is so solid it feels like a joy simply to inhabit the world.*Spoilers follow*Then you complete the game. The ending is a bit flat, but it is followed by a 'To be continued...' So you boot it up again after the credits and are taken to the 'Post Game'. The post game is not really optional, it is presented as act 3 of a 3 act story. So you play through it. You are taken back in time, effectively erasing from history the events of act 2. The 35 hours you spent in act 2 of the main game? That's gone. All the events, people you met, stories you created? They are gone. Instead a new, unconvincing 'true' baddie boss is introduced and you spend 30+ hours grinding (unless you use a cheap tactic to farm King Metal Slimes, in which case only 10 hours) and revisiting all the areas of the game a THIRD time just to gain the levels you need to take on this boss.Worse still, the third time you revisit areas, because the 'erasing time' plot doesn't really make sense, you have a much less satisfying experience. For instance: in the main game you meet Erik's sister. She has the power to turn things to gold, this has corrupted her and she's turned into a vicious warlord. There's a dungeon, some awesome gold-effect enemies and a great boss fight against her in which she can turn your party members to gold. You save her and it is all rather moving. BUT, according to the post game plot, this never happened. Instead, in the post game, you meet her in a shed, there's a fade to black and a text box saying that Erik explains his sister's ability to turn things to gold. Then there's a short cut-scene in which you help her and you get an item (and a rubbish one at that). So the drama and excitement of the original encounter is replaced with a really flat cut-scene that leads nowhere. As far as I am concerned, there's a five-star 70 hour game here, and a 2-3 star post game that does its best to ruin the plot of the main game and force you to grind tedious side quests (mostly variants on the fetch-quest) in order to see an uncompelling final cut scene and an ending that is less satisfying than the false ending of 70 hours in.Not as good as 7, 8 or 5 in my opinion, but still a cracking 70-hour JRPG.EDIT: The word I was thinking of yesterday was 'retcon'. Act 3 basically retcons the entire of Act 2 which, as far as I am concerned is a cardinal sin in storytelling. In spite of this, DQ11 is a spectacular game and essential for anyone who enjoys JRPGs.

Dragon Quest isn't really known in the UK but like how Final Fantasy is towards Western based markets for the JRPG genre...Dragon Quest hits it big in Japan as the number 1 JRPG franchise that started everything off. Including Character Designs by Dragon Ball's Akira Toriyama, Dragon Quest appears to be interesting by how development surrounding it is treated differently when compared to the Final Fantasy series and even other Japanese based franchises adapted for English language. If Final Fantasy is "American"...then Dragon Quest is "British" if that makes any sense. Anyways, onto the official Review-ahem:Dragon Quest: Echoes of an Elusive Age is the story of a young looking silent protagonist whom is said to be the destined "Luminary",the saviour of the world. However, the term "saviour" can be taken towards certain others to mean a different thing entirely...a "saviour of destruction". Fearing his fated role, these certain others intend to chase down the silent hero...and try to claim his life. To prevent this, the hero must journey forth and gather a ragtag band of allies, friends and even family to his cause in order to prove his innocence and expel the forces of darkness from the world. Joining him is a thief with a loyal heart, twin sisters gifted in the arts of magic, an extravagant show performer, a master of the martial arts expert and a wise old geezer whom is a bit eccentric. Together, these heroes intend to bring back the light to the world and stop the evil ones behind everything tragic that has happened to it. I recommend buying the Nintendo Switch version which has improved and added gameplay mechanics to the game but otherwise, it is a solid experience on the PS4 all the same.

First dragon quest I've persevered with, took around 125 hrs to complete although I did go through all the bosses and sought out the best weapons and completed all but 1 of the quests.Mechanics are typical turn based jprg, and they are well balanced and can be very tactical (exploiting weaknesses etc).World map is huge and there are plenty of different landscapes, monsters and cities. You have a lot of scope for finding treasures, collecting rare items to forge new armour and weapons. The forging of new weapons etc is also quite fun, it's essentially a skill game. The instructions to forge these new items can be found in treasure boxes, books, bosses etc.The story line is fairly standard fare, evil guy conquering the world. The story kind of plays out like a couple of dragon ball z story arcs.My reference to dragon ball z is also linked to the art of the world. The monsters to the characters are typical Akira Toriyama which has been the main artistic direction of all the dragon quests.Graphics look great on the PS4, they might not be the most demanding on the system but they do a really good job in showing off the world. The sound is also very good, the music you'll be humming along. The pacing of the game is good for the majority of the game however when I got to the end I was a bit underpowered to face off the last couple of optional bosses. Actually the end boss was easier, I completed the game on level 74.I've played many jprgs from final fantasy, persona, star ocean and have to say along with persona 5, its one of the best jprgs I've played in a long time. Can't wait for the next one.

The screenshots do not do this gorgeous game any justice, it looks great. Colourful landscapes and towns, the trademark Dragon Quest music which is excellent and of course the goofy enemies. If you have ever played the earlier Dragon Quests on Nintendo then you will be right at home with this entry.I love games where it is not deadly serious aka Fallout etc, here the enemies like the early slimes and cruelcumbers ooze personality. Hammerhoods charge up and attack involving their huge hammer only to fall over backwards, love it. Combat is turn based but very quick and you can auto attack using Tactics so I set it on Show No Mercy and let my party get on with it.Also Pep attack and combo attacks involving your party for glorious uber attacks.Skill system is interesting, as you level your base stats you get skill points that can be used to build your character with skills and special attacks. So early on I plump with sword flame attack. You can specialise in sword, great sword, knives and luminary, which will depend on your party setup.Levels are small but detailed, can climb down wells as usual, but also from rooftops enter chimneys and so on, so a lot of exploring. This nets you good items and of course the Mini Medals :-)All in all a lovely and colourful adventure game, to a very good standard like Final Fantasy 12 Zodiac ,Ys VIII and Ni No Kuni II, only gripe is audio is English only, so no Japanese which is a shame.

Once upon a time there were two parents, lets call them 'Square' and 'Enix'. They were best known for their two most famous children, 'Final Fantasy' and 'Dragon Quest'.Dragon Quest was the slightly older one, he's had the same job for 32 years and he's worked hard. Always methodical, following a same standard throughout his career, he's a safe pair of hands and reliable to boot.Final Fantasy as the younger one has always tried to be different, self-employed he's made boat loads of money and (when he's not smoking pot) he turns out some amazing products. Its a shame he keeps babbling 'Fithos Lusec Wecos Vinosec' or 'Paradigm System' while wearing an unkept black top with 'SEPHIROTH'in bold. Why do i illustrate the above? Because Dragon Quest is a safe pair of hands, the latest game is vibrant, beautiful and detailed. Its fantastic to see turn based battles again (and done well). The characters and voice acting is charming (although it may grate for some). This is a long game as well, its a wonderful adventure to relax with, I highly recommend it.Don't come in looking for crazy surprises (for better or worst) like Final Fantasy. While Dragon Quest marches on to the reliable adulation of the crowds, Final Fantasy continues to zig zag with increasingly strange results. Here's hoping Square Enix pays attention and makes more top quality (turn based) RPG's!

I've been a big fan of Dragon Quest since its eighth in series PS2 incarnation, and I was really hyped for number eleven when it was announced it would get a ps4 release in the West. And it doesn't disappoint.I haven't had this much fun with a PS4 JRPG since Persona 5, and while art style, theme and content may differ between the two franchises, they actually have something major in common - an old-school, turn-based battle system. You can sum up the gameplay of both any SMT (Shin Megami Tensei) and Dragon Quest title as "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". You know exactly what you are getting when you buy a Persona, MegaTen or Dragon Quest title and that is pure,turn-based fun that doesn't break from tradition or try to explore new frontiers...but they don't need to.People buy these games BECAUSE they know what they will be getting a good, old-fashioned retro turn-based experience in a genre that misses more often than it hits with experimentation in free-roam and real-time combat systems.I love Dragon Quest XI. The world is gorgeous, the characters are endearing and engaging, the battles are fun and all the Dragon Quest trops - like scattered treasure chests, Mini Medals and casino games - are all present and correct. If you love turned-based RPGs, you owe it to yourself to pick this up in September.Peace.

Probably the best 3rd party game on the Switch (and pushing some 1st party ones for the crown of best game) and that is not an exaggeration. The quality of the port is phenomenon, currently 80 hours in and have at least another 10 hours of post game to play without finishing all side quests. No noticeable performance issues and while resolution can be blurry, the quality of texture and character models look fantastic in handheld (and better in docked)Content wise, it is exactly what you'd expect from a JRPG. It has all the cliche things that make or break a JRPG but nothing completely over the top and certainly suitable for western audiences. I've found the lore and world building aspect of the game fantastic and gripping.I never played a DQ game before, I am now a fan.Levelling up can be a bit of a grind as your character becomes stronger but the game allows you to "auto" battle with a very intelligent A.I. system selecting the moves each character of your party makes and provides the ability to speed up combat if you wish. You can walk up to an enemy and let the game take over from there. If you're looking for a time sink which offers a great story, performance and more importantly reward a 3rd party studio for taking pride in porting a game to Switch. This is it!

An enhanced adventure that combines the beautifully vibrant 3D version of the game previously released on the PS4 and PC, as well as the retro 16 bit version that originally released exclusively in Japan on the 3DS. The Anime visuals, vivid landscapes, turn-based combat and fantasy storyline all are complimented by the Switch. The additional character storylines and gorgeous 2D Mode legitimately make this the "definitive" edition of this title and if you can get it for £40-45 there is an abundance of content here.It is nice to see a studio take pride in its product and give the consumer a near perfect port. It is the usual JRPG Fantasy tripe, an unnamed protagonist who discovers he is not only an orphaned prince but also the luminary,a magical individual who is responsible for defeating darkness and protecting the land. You are hunted very early on, as you traverse the land you will engage fantastical creatures, meet new people who will accompany you on you're journey and discover who you are. Again, if you enjoy JRPG'S, this is an imperative purchase and if it was developed by Nintendo this would be considered one of the best games on the Switch.

I'm not a big fan of the Dragon Quest series and lore. This is the first RPG that I play on PS4 after having finished Persona 5, hence it needs to stand the comparison... and it does, in its own way.It has all of the elements that you would expect from a 90s JRPG, refined controls and wacky characters (if you know Akira Toryama, you certainly know what you are buying). The plot is a bit simplistic, but I've seen a lot worse. Same for the spells / ability system. Which is not essentially bad, it is just streamlined. Crafting is not overcomplicated as well. Pep system is interesting, but relying too much on random conditions. This would be a natural 4/5 but the colourful world, the character (and monsters)design are pretty unique and memorable. What really pushes my evaluation to a 5/5 is the moment when you reunite with Sylvando. It's an gloriously furious classic moment of the contemporary gaming history.PS: the first 2 hours of the game are a bit boring and filled with clichéd moments... but that's it. From that moment onwards, the game will continuously improve.

Having been a lover of the genre since the Super Nintendo days, I honestly thought that I was done with JRPGs. They started to grate on me with the over use of exposition and busywork. This game is NOT like that at all. It's fun, it's charming, funny and very very well put together. You'd think that from the cartoony graphics it's going to be visually basic like a lot of lower budget JRPGs being churned out. Instead, it feels incredibly high budget with fully animated, realistic movements. Unlike the stiff, tanky animations you might see in a game by Nihon Falcom. You can have the full experience of the game (in my opinion) within 80 hours of gameplay, or continue with the epilogue to add another 50 hours (or so I hear).I personally liked how the game ended after 80 hours so did not continue to play, but enjoyed my experience so much that I bought this again for my young nephew. I felt that he should experience something great like this in his youth, so that his only experience of gaming isn't just Brain Training, Animal Crossing and Mario Kart.

If you like turn-based JRPG, don't miss this one.I have never played a dragon quest in the past but I wasn't disappointed. The game is gorgeous, the characters are really nice and you won't want the journey to end because it means parting ways. Most English voices are good (sorry Gemma, you're not one of them). The combat system is good and they found the right balance between old-school and modern.I "finished" the game after ~100h and was surprised by the amount of content after the ending. This actually led to a true ending with multiple side quests ~50h later! The journey is great fun but the grind got a little long towards the end. There is an annoying but extremely efficient way to level up at the end of the game,so look for a tutorial before you give up.The second downside is the repetitive, catchy and poor quality non-orchestrated music. It sounds fantastic at first but after a while you will find yourself turning the volume all the way down. This game still deserves 5 stars despite its flaws.

A must buy for the SwitchI have never played any of the games in this series, i'm a total Noob when it comes to Dragon Quest. This game is fantastic and worth your time. With the trend of modern games loaded with super, turbo, maximum, ultimate deluxe editions and so forth, season passes, coins, space bucks, gems, silver and the other hundred micro transactions that they add on. its sad to say that its a rarity to find a game that has so much content with no additional money needed.I have put in 90+ hours and i have still not fully finished the game. The game has a wounder full rich story, a wonderful art style by Akira Toriyama (creator of Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z) and tons of items, costumes, weapons and customisation. It's a story base RPG, so if you don't like RPG's then you might not like this. There is a free demo on the Switch store so you can try it for free to see if you like it. That's how i tried this out, liked it and made the purchase.

This is a fantastic game. All aspects have been carefully put together to create an experience that still feels like a true Dragon Quest game, nothing has wore off in this 11th instalment of the series and to be honest I think it's the most friendly place to start playing dragon quest even if you've never done so! The battle system is turn based so keep that in mind if you prefer action based games. Other than that I can't find a flaw, it shows that some JRPGs can really shine even today. Also dual audio is not included but the I personally find the localisation very nice. There's also a notice about streaming the game only for non-profit purpuses, for anyone interested in streaming I don't know if they'll be actually checking that. From what I've played until now I believe it's worth the full price.

This game reminds me so much of the old Final Fantasy games, but with great graphics. The battle system is turn based. It is not all random fights though (thank goodness) as you can see your enemies and run around them if you wish, but on occasions, there are random fights, but not to many. Its simple to get used to and requires some thinking especially against the bosses. The game starts with the combat being very simple, but gets a bit trickier later on. The story is fairly generic for this genre (hero saving the world stuff) and at times drags on a bit. The 'teams' characters are a bit aggravating at times but when you get used to their backstories you can get into them more. All in all I foundthe game to be a bit of light relief and pretty enjoyable after all the heavy games ive played recently.
