To really appreciate the Doom 3 series you need to have played the original `Doom' (1993) and `Doom II' (1994) games that knocked peoples socks off back then. You then understand why Doom3 has nothing more than an array of monsters jumping out at you every time you open a door for the first time - it's just a homage to the original games. Game play, the demons, and locations in Doom3 are pretty much as the original Doom series, and as before you mostly just keep killing these very nasty things until there are none left. However in this Doom3 series the graphics quality, AI, and story development are in a different league, and you do have some interaction with other characters and the odd defence spider droid. You need a powerful gaming PC though (we have an Nvidia 7950 graphics card and AMD-2 5000 PC), plus you must own and install the original Doom3 game to run this expansion pack. The story is set two years after the Doom3 catastrophe at the Union Aerospace Corporation (UAC) research centre on Mars, when Dr. Malcolm Betruger and his team unwittingly unleashed Hell's demons when recreating transporter technology developed by a long gone Martian race. It's 2147 and UAC has detected a strange signal from one of its Martian satellites, and consequently sends a team in to investigate. You go deep into the archaeological ruins of the lost Martian civilisation and find another alien "Artefact". When you touch it, in the first few seconds of the game, the forces of Hell are released again and attempt to steal back the powerful mystical device. You, a marine combat engineer, are working for Dr. Elizabeth McNeil. The attractive Dr McNeil was the whistleblower who notified counsellor Elliot Swann and Jack Campbell of Dr. Malcolm Betruger's mysterious activities at the beginning of Doom 3.This time there is little introduction, within minutes you are running from cave to lab to monorail blasting demons at a frantic pace. Again the power starts to fail, but this time you find you are using your torch a little less (which almost lightens the tension). Occasionally you have to brave the Martian atmosphere with a respirator, but mostly you are wandering around the decimated dig area and long derelict bases, picking up a few PDA's and data discs left around by the hapless UAC staff. These provide emails, voice recordings and reports that are essential information for your mission, i.e. the weapons locker codes that enable you to kick a lot more Demon b*tt. The fading radio transmission of Dr McNeil, cut scenes of demon attacks and the eerie silence, with occasional loud machine noises from automatically operating plant, add to the creepy game-play, although most of the tension comes from the gloom and darkness. Plus [sadly] again there's no stealth mode, so you can't hide in the shadows - as that's where 'they' lurk. The game has a few levels: e.g. the Erabus dig site, Erabus Labs and Control, The Phobos Labs, and a return to the disintegrating Delta Labs, before you have to descend into Hell itself to face an old foe. You have all the old weapons from Doom 3 plus a neat antique double barrelled shotgun (resurrected from Doom II) and your mysterious alien artefact. And the game play is again very scary, plus you need a fast gaming PC to respond in time when attacked or it's all over. This time there's far less time-wasting with cut scenes of you chatting to the odd survivor, and the game-play is overall far shorter than Doom3 (which actually reduces the feeling of repetition and works quite well). Again it does get quite hard as you near the end, and I had to resort to health and ammo cheats to survive the battle with the odd demon boss. Here though your alien artefact comes into it's own as it gains power through the game, and becomes quite formidable by the end. It took me just a few days to complete the game (Doom3 took weeks), partly because it's easier to get out of each level. You can save at any time for difficult sequences. So overall, just like Doom3, it was a very enjoyable, if rather creepy, game - it's not for preteens though. The only problem I had running the expansion pack was that I had to unload my patched Doom3 and reload it (unpatched) before Resurrection of Evil, which then applied the update patch - otherwise both games refused to run. For me it ran under XP and now Vista (with 3Gb system memory). So highly recommended, if you have a very fast PC, and now (often) at a bargain price.

The first thing you notice with Doom 3 : Resurrection Of Evil is that there's far less of hordes of creatures just mindlessly jumping out at you from behind almost every corner as there was in Doom 3.And that gives you time to actually enjoy the amazing graphics, which are without a doubt the best of any PC game. The level of realism is superb. It's not quite as dark and gloomy an atmosphere as the original Doom 3.....though it would be exaggerating to say they've seriously lightened the place up. But this is, after all, a horror game and the somewhat subdued lighting serves that purpose very well. The game is generally harder than Doom 3. Some of the bosses are incredibly hard to beat.But....there are an additional two weapons that make life easier. The first is the grabber.....yes, straight out of Half Life 2. Have fun hurling plasma balls back at enemies. And the second is....wait for it....the return of the double barrelled shotgun !You also get an artefact that gives you various powers, such as slowing down time, or even temporary invincibility. A sort of glorified soul cube.Overall, this game is much more what I expected the original Doom 3 to be. It is more challenging, and not just an endless succession of things jumping out at you. There are puzzles, some quite tricky, and there's less of visiting the same darkened corridor for what seems like the millionth time.So if you have the original Doom 3 and you are wondering should you buy the expansion pack, my advice is yes, it is well worth it.

Love Doom 3 so much after picking it back up 15 years later that I had to get this to complement my Doom 3 original CD set. This is a fun game with a lot of cool stuff to offer two years after the end of the original Doom 3 story line. I added the Duct Tape mod and changed the spread of the shot gun to "3" to mimic a home defense shotgun. I love it. The artifact is an interesting item. I got this used on Amazon. The interesting thing is that this expansion has a CD Key and wants to install patch 1.2. I already had patch 1.3.1 and just had to reinstall 1.3.1 again after installing ROE. Dr. Betruger awaits....I run this on Win 7 (XP compatibility) on my Core i5-3570K 4.5 GHz with a GTX 1060 6GB graphics.I run it on Ultra at 1920x1080. The textures are a bit dated, but when I first got Doom 3, my machine was an AMD Athlon 2000+ with ATI 9600 All in Wonder Pro with 128 MB VRAM. Doom 3 made me upgrade to an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ with a 6800GT graphics card. How far we've come. The Maledict/Betruger boss at the end does not disappoint. It is a tougher boss than the Cyberdemon by far. I find that you need a special combination of weapons to piss off the bugger and you will be in for a surprise. I hope you read up on how to use the BFG9000 on your PDA from Doom 3.

I don't know about you but I thought Doom3 was really average - dark, repetitive and not at all frightening. Even the graphics were unremarkable - so the last thing I wanted was more of the same.Tempted by the price and a couple of good reviews I got RoE and am I glad I did? Yes indeed! As a previous reviewer says "it's what Doom3 should have been". It's similar but different - it's edgey, it's genuinely scary and it's really demanding without being downright impossible. It has some new gimmicks - but don't get it for these - the thing is that its obviously been properly game tested this time and the excitement has been engineered into the game by the timing of the challenges and the structure of the maps. The cunning availability of only one save per section also means that sometimes you have to go back and start again.... A genuine challenge this.Restore your faith - get it, you'll love it!

It's not a repeat of Doom 3. The Soul cube, new monsters and weapons add to the interest, but essentially, nothing's changed. You just know that pressing a button or opening a door will spawn more monsters. The only intrigue just comes from guessing which variety. The most interesting character is Dr. Liz McNeil. Why isn't better use of her? The occasional radio message is inadequate. Perhaps she could have been an active intellectual ally to your character's brawn rather?I was wowed by the Martian landscape scenes in Doom 3, why wasn't this expanded on in RoE? Why so few trips outside (and even then rushed, because of limited air supply)?ID Software /Nerve Software have to tread a difficult path between staying true to the Doom franchise, and developing ideas and storylines beyond the original concept. In my view, they could and should have been more imaginative. Must do better, ID!

I was a bit disappointed once Doom III lauched. Arguably, the quality of the lighting etc... were truly amazing but the whole game just didn't quite deliver the chills and frills as the previous versions (Doom I and Doom II)...Like in RTCW (Return to Castle Wolfenstein), Nerve studios deliver the goods here. The theme is a mix of the usual enemies from Doom III, but the setting and theme are again (like in RTCW) with an archeological twist and the action is more fast paced than in the origial title (Doom III). Getting through the levels is far more challenging and chilling than in the base release. Play it now and experience how Doom III should have been in the first place.Happy fragging!

I found Doom 3 a grueling, oppressive and scary game when I first played it in 2005. This one is pretty similar but as I didn't wear headphones it didn't freak me out as much! There is slightly more to it than in the original, not much but some slightly more puzzle like situations that you find yourself in. The double barrel shotgun is awesome too. I completed the game without too much trouble on the 'veteran' level and I think anyone who is used to playing FPS's should be playing it on this level.

23.9.2010

This is a good game but it seems a lot easier than its counterpart, maybe it's me being used to how Doom 3 is and knowing what to expect, there's no stupidly long intro into the game like Doom 3, it's just straight into the action after a small movie intro. Maybe i'll try playing on Veteran after I've completed this game and I hope this review helps those interested in buying the expansion pack.Any questions people have about the game and my own experiences feel free to ask.

Great add-on for a great game. Scares the s*** out of ya when you don't exspect it, gets so involved and drawn into the game, do you risk looking round the next corner....Well yes, you must GO ON... If you have Windows 7 then your out of luck.... XP only. The Doom 3 BFG edition is ok and runs fine on Windows 7... Try it. Great game, But you might want to keep clean undies close by.... Enjoy.

What a fantastic game - really intriguing and the puzzles brilliant. Just a few problems finding my way in the dark at times - this is too dark in places and spoils the game. I did use walkthroughs and cheats from the internet as I have a life and it still took me hours and hours over weeks. Looking forward to Doom 4.

Very good game. I got this second hand on prime and I was very pleased haw quick it came and also it was like brand new every thing was clean and no scratches on the disc. A very good game but if you don't have the normal Doom 3 first this game will not work but this is one is my top game.

For a product I've ordered for just a penny, I was very surprised in the extremely wonderful condition this product came in and was not expecting for absolutely everything to be in near-perfect condition. For these reasons, I'm giving this product a 5-star review rating!!!

19.4.2013

This game has kept me quiet for hours and hours and I still enjoy playing it. I know games have moved on but for it's time this was a front runner. The last levels look impossible to finish without God mode but perhaps I'm just not as quick as I thought I was.

30.11.2015

the graphics are so fantastic that I want to dwell on them and just explore! But my most recent 'fortune' at the local Chinese/Thai restaurant told me "A ship in harbor is safe, but that's not why ships are built." Gotta get killing!
