DmC is the latest game in the Devil May Cry series, effectively acting as a reboot for the story. The installation (I got it on DVD for the PC - Windows 7) was tedious in the extreme, installing various things before the game itself installs. Then when Steam opens it for the first time, it installs more things on top of that. I'm sure it's necessary but it felt like it went on forever. Anyway, enough preamble. The graphics are stunning and the gameplay is as fluid as previous instalments. Any fears of new developer Ninja Theory messing the franchise up have to be dispelled completely. The combination of swords/gauntlets/scythes/ages and guns make gameplay extremely varied and there are ridiculous numbers of combinations of moves to perform. The story is fairly one dimensional, and the script won't be award winning. The voice acting is well done however, and Dante has some good one liners. There are 20 levels in total, some are longer than others, but all look stylish and amazing on the eye. There are several levels of difficulty. Human (easy), Devil Hunter (medium), Nephilim (hard), Son of Sparta (very hard), Dante Must Die (ridiculously hard), Heaven or Hell (you need to be sectioned) and Hell and Hell (you have been sectioned).Son of Sparta is available after completing the game on any of the three levels before it, whilst Dante Must Die whilst Heaven and Hell, are available after completing Son of Sparta, whilst Hell and Hell is available after Hell and Hell. The game is incredibly short. I finished it in less than 10 hours on the Devil Hunter difficulty, and that includes replaying some of the earlier missions. Whilst the game on the lower difficulties is over fairly quickly, and you can effectively button bash your way through, the later difficulties require a lot more skill. I've almost finished the game on Son of Sparta, and it is significantly more challenging. There are harder enemies earlier in the game, and button bashing simply won't work if you want to finish the level with a decent score.Unlike previous versions of the game, on this version you get experience points that are used to level up Dante's abilities, weapons and guns. Separately, you use red orbs to buy items (health/devil power upgrades and replenishment). You can see your score go up as you play through each level, combinations of moves as previously are rated between D-SSS. The better your moves during the level, the better your mission score will be. I should add at this point that you can replay any level at any time once you have completed it. You will get additional experience points and orbs when you complete levels again. Abilities/Weapons/Guns/Health and Devil Power upgrades that you obtain stay with you, and you can replay earlier levels with your upgrades which help to get to the max SSS rating for the level. The earlier levels contain hidden extras that you can only get when you get upgrades/abilities later on in the game.Whilst my experience of the game is mostly positive, there are several negatives:Firstly, the camera angle can sometimes be a bit dodgy and it makes it difficult to see and fight enemies on occasions.Second, there is no "lock on" feature for targeting specific enemies. This would be useful when there are only a small number of harder enemies. Perhaps just a personal preference, and hasn't been seen before in the franchise.Third, I would not attempt the higher difficulty levels without a gamepad - the keyboard controls are ok, but I found it much easier with a gamepad, and I would say this is essential for the harder difficulty levels.Forth, there are a lot of cut scenes that sometimes interrupt the flow of the game. Luckily, most can be skipped so once you've played through each level once and got the gist of the story there's not much point in watching them again.Fifth, the range of demons to slay is no where near as large as previous games. The bosses are more comedic and lack the darkness of previous games. Finally, I have noticed a couple of times that the game occasionally produces a black screen when playing (just before a cut scene loads) and then you have to ctrl+alt+del. This happens very infrequently. If it does happen, when selecting the mission it reloads at the last checkpoint so you don't have to play the whole level again. Also, if you are playing with headphones, some of the cinematic cut scenes come out of the computer speakers rather than the headphones. This could just be a specific problem to me, but this is the only game I own where it does this, so I assume it is game specific.Overall, I thought this was a solid reboot for the franchise and full marks have to be given to the gameplay and the graphics, both of which are outstanding. That's not to say there isn't room for improvement, but this is a very respectable entry/reboot. I would be lying if I said this game wasn't a huge amount of fun (hence the 5* on that aspect), but the negatives described above means it loses a star for me. That said, for fans of the series and newbies alike, I can't recommend it highly enough.

DMC on PC is another great reason to own a gamepad. Score-attack combat games really don't lend themselves well to keyboard and mouse control and this is no exception, so don't try it without.DMC is a reboot of the Devil May Cry series, meeting as we do a young, unformed Dante who's on a mission to find out who he is, discover his family, get revenge and also bang seven bells out of every supernatural monster that stands in his way. It feels the same yet better and more fluid than the previous franchise entries I've played to boot.Along the way, Dante will gain an impressive arsenal to dispatch his foes. He starts with his oversized sword and his guns (pretty useless except for keeping baddies at a distance)but soon starts to collect Devil weapons (which are slow, devastating hitters designed for close range hammering) and Angel weapons (fast, light-damage ranged tools which are ideal for giving you space). The trick with DMC is to use all of your weapons in every encounter, as points are awarded for combo attacks. It's here that DMC shines. Creating a hugely violent combo is enormously satisfying, ripping your foes out of the sky, smashing an axe into them before hopping into the air, lifting your next victim with you before unleashing a blue whirlwind and battering them into a wall with possessed boxing gloves. It's chaotic, colourful and cartoonish but never lets the black humour of it's lurid death-dealing slip so it remains fun and battles never become tiresome. Yes it's very violent, but sort-of schlocky while it's there. It's even fun to return to earlier chapters you've already completed once you've expanded your moveset so you can beat your earlier score.Visual design is great as reality twists in the nether-world, but it's here where my only criticism of the game lies. The design of the bosses often borders on tasteless and it's high time that designers stopped equating "Mature" and "Scary" with "sickening". It's not a game-breaker for me, just a bit disappointing. It's a bit like shooters justifying their M rating by swearing a lot. We don't really need it to be reminded that we're grown-ups playing a grown-up's game.Other than that niggle the rest of the game design is very good with special mention going to character animation and voice acting. You completely buy Dante as a disenfranchised Gen-Y-er on his journey to being a more caring, sharing moster-slaughterer and supporting cast is no less strong.Aurally, sound has moved away from generic heavy metal to a pounding electronic soundtrack by CombiChrist that's no less heavy but probably more relevant to Dante's rebirth. It sounds great and definitely adds to the game.Overall, a highly recommended game on PC for fans of action brawlers.

This game has received a lot of negativity since it was announced, and I'll admit I was one of the people who thought it was taking the series in a bad direction. I purchased it on Steam on January 25th and I've enjoyed it immensely. The writing could use some work as most of the dialogue is forgettable, Dante has some funny one liners here and there but there isn't really much else to him. The story, whilst not original, is quite interesting, it kept me engaged to the end as I wanted to see the finale and how Dante was going to come out on top. This is also a great game for people who haven't played previous Devil May Cry games or aren't familiar with the story. It tells the origin of Dante and Vergil and explains their relationship well. The gameplay is great, fast and fluid with brilliant animations, it's less challenging than previous installments in the DMC franchise, but still offers a lot of enjoyment. My one real gripe with the combat is the guns though. Whilst they're fun to use and can keep the pace up, they just aren't up to par with melee weapons. I never felt like my guns were doing any significant damage, Ebony and Ivory especially are pretty useless now. The way you switch between weapons opens up a lot of possibilities in combat, you can take on entire mobs at once, pull in an enemy to seperate them from a group or fling demon's in the air where they will become defenseless to your attacks. It's pretty simple but may take a little time to get used to if you haven't played a DMC game before. The graphics are beautiful, especially on the PC, if your PC can run this then get this version as it's the best of the three. With a higher frame rate and less fog and screen tearing, there's no reason not to.The new Dante takes a little getting used to, he is different, that's for sure, and for a while I just wanted the white haired half demon back. I did eventually grow to like this new version, though I'd like to see him mature more into the Dante of old during this series.Overall my issues with this game are minor, it offers a very fun experience and if you can get past the changes then it is a fun game for fans of this series and newcomers.

I'll start by saying that this is the first game in this franchise that I've played so I'm judging it only on it's own merits. In terms of play style it's a 3rd person combat and platform type in the same general category as Assassins Creed of Tomb Raider although by no means identical to either and it really owes more to the scrolling arcade fighting game tradition . The gameplay is mostly focused on the very sophisticated combat mechanics which combine melee, acrobatics and ranged weapons with a focus on stringing together combos and learning the abilities of your enemies to exploit you weaknesses. The set-piece combat is punctuated by puzzle type platform sections which use the same acrobaticmechanics and the combat and although that can be a bit frustrating at times they are very satisfying to complete, relying on timing and rhythm. The animation is very nicely done and there is a lot of satisfaction in tying together a flowing set of moves. There are a lot of controls to master but the difficulty has been scaled very well so you feel like you are actually achieving something rather than just button mashing, something also reflected in the scoring system which rewards you for using a variety of attacks. The story is linear and pretty much a standard issue 'hero's journey' but it is well written and tied together by fairly extended cutscenes which are perfectly watchable if nothing particularly special. Having said that the characters are very well scripted and acted and genuinely engaging.By current standard it's perfectly playable on a fairly modest PC but running it on max detail with a reasonable graphics card (a Geforce 950 copes easily) improves the visuals a lot. The overall visual design for much of the game is quite distinctive with bright, saturated colours and a very graphic feel, not unlike movies like 300 and Sin City which also ties in well with the swooshy weapons effects. This also means that although the graphics don;t quite have the depth or detail of the most modern games it doesn't feel at all dated. Having said that the speed and fluidity of the gameplay does need to be run at 60fps to get the full experience.

WELL Having played Devil May Cry Before I can say that the improvements are massive, it runs a consistent 60 frames and I experienced zero slow down which impressed me unlike assassins creed unity which ran at 30 frames when it didn't experience crashes if you were lucky, and it also includes a bulk of content including Vergil's downfall which is a nice change of action and he wields a samurai sword called the Yamato which is a nice change from Dante's gunning slash style, (Rebellion for Dante and Yamato for Virgil just like the original) Virgil's style is more complex sword skill with samurai style slashes and a summon mini sword ability instead of Dante's chosen firearms.I enjoyed this game quite a bit and I find myself playing through it again on regular basis. If you are a long time fan of the series or new to it I would definately recommend this game for you. It is a good reboot for the series without changing things too much like Allot of the massive games today. it is published by Capcom and made by the British team Ninja Theory. All In All Very Good I give it a 9 out of 10 for fun hack and slashing style gameplay and keeps true too the original story of Devil May Cry with just slight differences and extra characters.

This game received a fair bit of flak initially due to its departure from the mainline series as people were awaiting Devil May Cry 5. I found the game to be quite decent with some shortcomings. The graphics are very good and going into Limbo is a good use of a variety in them. The gameplay is where it gets tricky, literally. I found it took a lot of practice to manage the controls and pull off the combat moves I wanted. There is quite a lot of variety to them, but the time required may not be worth it for many people, but button-bashing can work anyway to get you through the game. The platforming sections were the hardest part and always have been for me in DMC games, however in this instance I blame it partially on the Spider-Man-esque tool they tried to implement. The story isn't anythign particularly special, however I do really like the combination of modern backdrops with Limbo environments.Overall, the game is well worth it at the price you'll currently see it at (base.com), and makes me look forward to DMC5 when it's not so expensive.

First of all I have to say that a gamepad is a must for any game in this vein...This is personally one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences I have had in a very long time. The story is a bit predictable but enjoyable nonetheless. The graphics are stunning to look at and I personally did not notice any bugs with them. The combat is solid and really drags you in to trying to pull off an awesome combo; and when you do it makes you feel like a badass. It is a decent length with 20 levels and on Devil Hunter (medium) it takes around 10 hours. However after this you unlock a new difficulty called "Son of Sparda" and this is effectley very hard (one above hard).I have just started a play through on this and it is even more rewarding than the first play through.I would say this is definitely worth the price, going to remember this game for a long time.

A lot of people have slanted this game because it's not like the original. As soon as I started playing I couldn't stop. The graphics are really something. It's fun. Story is a bit ok, nothing special but keeps you engaged to want to carry on.The music is different but I enjoyed it.The boss fights were amazing!I gave it 5 stars because I think the amount of effort that went into the game deserved it. Graphics, Music, Gameplay. The story might not be a 5 for me personally but it didn't effect me enjoying the game. The more you play it, the better it gets which is awesome. Some games I've played are just great at the beginning to drag you in but become empty after a couple hours, this was a non stop action packed game.

I bought this game as I'd seen it had dropped significantly in price. I certainly wasn't disappointed with the Definitive Edition. The 1080p and 60 frames per second makes the action very smooth. Mentioning which, don't expect a huge amount of variety. This is an out and out DMC game - which means the game is focused on the gun toting and sword slashing Dante. However, you won't be upset about that as the action plays out a frenetic pace and each battle is challenging without being impossible. It is a DMC game for the modern gamer and as such it is easy to jump in to and out of, as well as offering plenty of depth with various modes etc making it good value. In short, at the £15 or so I paid,I'd definitely recommend it.

Devil May Cry brand new tears -- DmC reinvents Capcom's classic action franchise to explore new frontiers with the series. The "Devil May Cry DNA" of stylish action, rewarding combat and a brash, smart-talking protagonist all remains; however, it has now injected with a dark and brutal gameplay that promises to redefine the franchise.DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition brings the same great game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, along with a couple of tweaks to make it feel different for returning veterans. The sharper visuals, smooth 60-fps gameplay, and other features and enhancements gave me plenty of reasons to be happy about coming back, and to recommend that you pick it up for the first time.

Played DMC on playstation one and two many years ago. So got this more out of curiosity than anything due to have a PS4 now.I must say....I love it! Though this type of game may be a 'Marmite' situation.Story line is...well...ok but I love the game play itself....fast action...lots of sword and gun battles....a little repetitive... but entertaining non the less.To say the graphics are good seems lame these days as 'graphics' have come sooo far since I started playing games way back in the day. However these are not top of the range but excellent non the less. Will definitely be one of those games I will finish (get to the end).

Awesome."Purists" will tell you the combat system is dumbed down, broken, or plain too easy. I think some people are pretentious a***holes. This game has a unique sense of humour, very intelligent level design, and a very unique concept that shows ninja theory were unafraid to take a risk, yet they have still made the combat very consistent with the rest of the series. If anything its less obtuse, but still with enough variety to keep you chasing those SSS ranks.£25 is a bargain, pick it up, play through to learn then keep playing to master the system, its uniquely satisfying and will keep you hooked.

I've been in love with Devil May Cry since I had first played it on the PS2 several years ago. The re-mastered version for the PS4 tops all of the previously played versions. The graphics are absolutely amazing and I love how the story moves along. In the past, the enemies just got more difficult to defeat as you moved along the levels, in this version it's not quite that linear. Without wanting to spoil it for the other players too much, being able to play the other side of the story (Dante's brother Virgil) is really a nice extra. I don't think there is a better game around at the moment.

Don't let dantes hair put you of this game, it's amazing. I loved the previous dmcs and this is just as good. Ninja story did a fantastic job with the story, really movie like with great performances and voice acting, and also the combat flows beautifully. There are tons of moves and easy to pull of and string together making you feel like an utter badass. Although this is a reboot, it can easily be seen as a prequel if a sequel doesn't come of this as by the end of the game you see how everything fits with the other games and also get to see how Dante gets his trade mark hair!

6.4.2016

Good game, no glitches and gameplay is very smooth. I enjoyed the storyline, but the game is short. Anyhow the game is still good if your planning to play it alot as their is harder difficulties that make the game much more challenging, fun and longer. Also is good if you haven't played before as it is a remake. A feature that I loved about this game is that when you play the game again on a harder difficulty you still keep everything like your health and moves etc also you can change the buttons to anything you want which is another feature I loved!
