Derq 2 is a very low budget sequel but is never hindered by the budget it has available to it when it comes to telling a story. Be aware that the game has characters who have suffered either mental or physical abuse and may be upsetting to some people who have had similar experiences.The main heroine Mai Tokiwa comes from a broken family and suffered physical and emotional abuse at the hands of her father for many years. This comes to a head when she's faced with a horrifying situation and is forced to murder her father in self defense or faced being killed.Mai is then placed in a boarding school in Le Choara by social services and sets about trying to uncover the mystery of her sister Sanaes disappearance.She befriends a young girl named Rottie who is the daughter of the headmistress and together they work to uncover a dark secret surrounding the school and the town.The setting of Le Choara acts as a hub of sorts and the story directs you to various locations on the map and often requires you to retread the same routes to get to new areas. But you can fast travel to the save points after first visiting them, which makes it easier. This is different to the first game which had unique locations and dungeons.Retained from the first game is the visual novel story scenes, which are split between story scenes and optional school life scenes where Mai and her friends can interact with other students at the dorm. This is one of the things I liked about the game because it never felt like a character was there for the sake of being there. They used the limited budget to tell a tighter but dark story and by the end it was satisfying.The game will take around 15-18 hours for someone to complete if you read/watch the story scenes and level up normally. But its encouraged to play the game at least twice because there's some new plot scenes with a certain character and an "EX" ending to unlock. They also included a "Pain" area with an Ao Oni boss to fight at the end.Again, the game is very short and contains scenes that may be upsetting and disturbing to some. Please do take that into account when buying the game.
