Haven't completed yet but very glad a matter lent me this. I shouldn't like it, metroidvania style platforming and fighting, but each time I die I have to start from the beginning again, losing whatever level ups and weapons I had. However, i keep any runes I've earned (so can still access alternative routes after first picking them up), any permanent abilities I've bought, and access to weapons I've found and paid blueprints (which I will still have to pick up during the game, but they will be available in some way). Each level simply requires you to find the exit, with no obligation to kill along the way, but every incentive to do so as kills earn you souls to trade in for abilities between levels, find level ups to improve your hp, damage and mutators. You also get bonus souls for completing levels in minutes, or killing a minimum number of enemies with no damage to yourself. A complete run done CAREFULLY should take 1-2 hours, done directly once you are used to things, you should be able to get to the end boss in maybe 40 mins as a guess. You will never do this in your first number of runs anyway until you are used to both the enemies and the tactics. This game also has dlc extensions for about £4 each, note that there are bugs with it that may mean for it to recognise the dlc as bought, you may have to uninstall reinstall. This game is not for all players, if you don't like repeating things over and over, or if you now scoff at pixel art games (yes this is pixellated, but its smooth running and has some nice touches with animations and lighting)Quick tactics--Learn how to parry with a shield, you may still take damage, but sometimes your shield gives you worthy bonuses by doing so-plough more of your souls into permanent abilities and benefits, weapons don't take many souls to unlock, but ultimately you will only use a fraction of the weapons one you find your favourites-milk each map for every level up and every enemy, but if you are low on health just head straight for the exit (you always get a hp refill between levels)-curse chests are a nightmare as one got after opening them will kill you, but yet if done carefully, its another chance to earn extra bonuses on the way to the final boss-level ups are a choice of 3 colours, lol most of your levelling for the colour that represents your most used weapons and mutators (in my case purple because I use bows, so regardless of which projectile weapon I get, purple level ups benefit them all, as well as improving the crows feet mutator)

Think Dark souls if it were a 2D side scroller with 8bit graphics. Is the best comparison I can make. You start with nothing and if you die you'll be going all the way back to the very beginning with nothing. However each map is procedurally generated so the location of weapons/power ups and entrances to the next level will change constantly keeping each run fresh and different to the last.COMBAT AND GAMEPLAYYou start with a basic sword and shield or Bow depending on what you choose. As you progress through the maps you'll find better quality items with increased stats and different traits. There's swords, daggers, spears, whips, bows to name a few, as well various traps, turrets and grenades. Each weapon has its own strengths and weaknesses and will suit a certain play style. You'll also need to adapt depending on which weapons you find first. E.G my last playthrough I was using an elemental power to freeze enemies and a bow to finish them off as well as laying traps and turrets. There's really a lot of variation. The combat and movement is fast and fluid and you'll need to be prepared for each encounter as it's very easy to get overwhelmed with enemies if you run in not thinking. You need to be somewhat methodical in your attacks and react quickly for example getting ambushed by 4 or 5 enemies all at once while you simultaneously attack one, throw down traps for another, a turret for another and then fire your bow at another will get your heart racing especially when you risk losing all your collected "cells" for upgrades. But it has the same feeling of accomplishment if you pull it off that dark souls gives you.The cells you collect can be used to unlock permanent abilities which will make each run a little easier. For example a health potion which can be upgraded from a one time use to two times, then three times etc. As well as many others to choose from but this should definitely be your first choice.GRAPHICSAs mentioned it has an 8bit pixelated art style which I'm not usually a huge fan of but environments are colorful and vibrant combined with enemies exploding into pieces when killed and various visual effects from weapons and power ups its all very nice to look at.SUMMARYIf you want a game that's challenging, has a retro art style and great combat mechanics and don't mind a little grinding to level up abilities which will help you progress further each time then you should definitely give this a try. I got it for £15 on PSN and you can't complain for that price ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I’m not sure how this amazing game has not got more reviews so I wanted to add mine! I played this piece of art nearly 2 years ago when it was being Beta tested on the PC and loved it then, so when I heard it was coming to my favourite console( switch of course) I knew I had to get it. The gameplay is fluid, graphics lush and the music is just amazing. My favourite stage being the Clock Tower due to its layout and music. You start with pretty basic weapons and attributes which over time you collect Cells and unlock new items etc by collecting blueprints from either hidden areas or by killing enemies( its a High luck factor) killing enemies is satisfying and I always tend to kill the tougher ones with traps (favourite so far being the heavy turret and flame turret) it’s a very much try, die, repeat game. You will die and ALOT. It took me many many many tries to get to the end just to be wiped out by the final boss but I did eventually beat him! But there is still so much to unlock and do! I highly recommend this game if you are looking for something to keep you occupied!

This is one of the best and most frustrating games I have ever played. Frustrating? Five Stars? Why? Well, the frustration does not come from the game itself. At no point playing this game am I frustrated by a ridiculous learning curve or dying because of poor controls or a ridiculous piece of bad programming. No, I am frustrated at my own inability to do kill the right bad guy, or trading my weapon for a more powerful but slower sword. The frustration is all from my own idiocy. The game itself is brilliant. Just retro enough to remind you of classic games, the controls are slick, enemy design is great, and the game is so hard, just enough to keep bringing you back until you realise it's 4am and you have to be at work in 3 hours. The switch is the perfect platform for it, as you can play on the go, around the house or on the big screen. It's a brilliant game. Buy it.

I am a bit of an avid switch game collector, I have a fair few titles! But this is one I came by completely by accident! I was buying a couple of other games when I realized I had accidentally put this into my basket somehow (I think it was one of those 'Often Purchased Together' things. But I thought well if its their ill leave it in and take a look, its a reasonably priced game why not! Boy am I glad I did! What a good time this game is! Its not the easiest of games, expect a challenge, but the story is great, the main character has some hilarious dialogue and the gameplay is really fun! Dont be put of by the 8-bit graphics style (I was at first too)because if you give the game a little time you will learn to love it and it plays so well!

So. I’ve a school Teacher job interview and can’t switch my console off. This game is just too damn good and I can’t remember the last time I played 7 straight hours on a new game. The game is great in every way and I won’t bore into detail as there are reviews/YouTube, Metacritic & Twitch that will do it more justice than I can here.Needless to say it’s a solid, easy 10/10 and best played on Switch. Smooth, stylish, fast and the levelling of permenent perks between permadeaths is cleaving crafted.Think Dark Souls 2D in a procedurally generated world, with Diablo style looting. Each run I improve my skills and unlock something to make the next run easier.I’ve defeated the first boss now.I’ve a long way to go.Who needs sleep right?

for any fan of METROID & CASTLEVANIA or METROIDVANIAS as that is the correct terminologyBeing a huge fan of the genre as I have loved both games series since I was a kid and playing them on the NES & SNES.I can say the DEAD CELLS does borrow from each game but manages to take the ingredients to give it a Masterchef Makeover as it has got very much its own thing going on and will leave you hungry for more.I Promise you this game needs your love and suffering and i promise you will lose your patience at times but the way it plays you can not dislike how it charms you.4.8/5.0

A masterpiece. Most of the time indie games don't impress me.But this is in terms of quality an elite triple A experience.Excellent combay, satisfying progression, varied gameplay, addictive gameplay loop.Easily one of the top 10 best PS4 games.Othe indie games I have liked this gen are Undertale,A hat in time,Days gone,Abzu. But this game is something else. There is nothing quite like it,at least in terms of quality.Big publishers need to take inspiration how to make a game like this.5/5,96%.

I've been playing for about 3 hours now and the game is an instant classic it's that simple. Retro graphics, outstanding soundtrack, fun but challenging gameplay, great on TV, perfect for handheld it ticks all boxes. Superb, go buy it. A must for any Switch owner.

It's very sad that this game is soo short, because it's addictive. They artwork is stunning, the gameplay is very dinamic, and it's frustrating challenging.Great game! Get this version, it includes DLC and a beautiful keyring ?

12.12.2018

One of the best games I’ve played this year. It is hard, but it’s extremely fair. Honestly it’s better than most AAA titles I’ve played this year. Comes with a really cool art book too.

20.11.2018

This is an excellent game however it is aimed at a very specific crowd as they must like both Metroidvania and Rogue-like games but if you do, it is a fantastic amalgamation of the two.

4.7.2020

Arrived earlier than expected, game is difficult but very fun and definitely worth the purchase. The keyring included is adorable and the art booklet is nifty.

22.12.2018

Such an addictive game and fun experience. A must have game in the collection. Worth every penny. Do not hesitate on this and purchase the game.

1.4.2019

Very challenging and enjoyable game. Perfectly suited to the Switch as it’s so easy to pick up and play a couple of levels in handheld mode.
