'Days Gone' is a third person action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the outbreak of a deadly virus has mutated the majority of the worlds occupants into rambling, ravenous, animal-like creatures nicknamed 'Freakers'.You play Deacon St John - a former member of a biker gang, wracked with guilt over the loss of your wife at the onset of the outbreak, and filled with a deep hatred of the freakers for what they have taken away from you. Now, approximately two years after the world went to hell in a hand basket, you ply your trade as a bounty hunter and gun-for-hire spending much of your time on the move in the wastelands of America's Pacific Northwest and just trying to survive day by day on a planet overrun by monsters, mutated animals, bandits, and crazies - that is until you uncovers clues to a conspiracy that may expose the cause of the apocalyptic disaster that befell the world...'Days Gone' is an open world game with a suggested 60 hours worth of game play. The game uses a dynamic weather system that will effect your environment, with things such as rain and snow making roads slicker and more difficult to maneouvre your motorcycle on, reducing visibility, and masking sound, as well as a day/night cycle that effects the behaviour of the freakers with them becoming more aggressive, powerful, and dangerous at night.Your character can carry a variety of weapons, including ranged weapons such as pistols, rifles, assault rifles, shotguns, and crossbows which are split into 'primary', 'secondary', and 'special' categories. You can also carry hand to hand weapons such as knives, baseball bats, pieces of 2x4, axes, machetes, and table legs, as well as a variety of special items such as explosives like the fire bomb, frag grenade, and remote mines. Each weapon comes in a certain condition which denotes it's power level, and weapons also have a variety of attributes with which to measure their effectiveness such as 'damage', 'range', 'accuracy', 'rate of fire', 'penetration', 'stopping power', and 'magazine size'.Many of these provisions can be built from components which can be scavenged from the environment around you or found in abandoned buildings and then combined in order to make useful items. A rag, a beer bottle, and a can of kerosine for example can be used to build a Molotov cocktail, a tree sapling and a piece of scrap can be combined to make a crossbow bolt, and herbs can be combined to make salves and potions.Deacon also has a motorcycle - referred to as a 'Drifter bike' - which is key to the game play as this is not only your primary method of moving around the wider world, but is also crucial to your survival as it offers the best way to avoid large hordes of freakers, escape enemy gangs, and acts as a mobile inventory where ammunition and supplies can be stored and accessed as necessary. Your motorcycle can be customized in a variety or cosmetic and practical ways such as changing it's paint job, adding decals, adding a tougher frame, larger fuel tank, or better tyres. The bike has a finite amount of fuel that will have to be replenished to avoid becoming stranded on foot, and can break down, be lost, or destroyed.Game controls are fairly intuitive and standard for a game of this type. The left stick controls movement, where as the right stick moves the camera. Pushing L3 allows you to sprint, the controller buttons allow you to crouch or climb/vault, the left trigger aims your weapon and the right trigger fires it. You also have the 'survival wheel' which is triggered by the R2 shoulder button and allows you to open a quick inventory which is used to switch between weapons or combine components into useful items. One more unique feature is that of 'survival vision'. John is an expert survivalist and tracker and a press of the R3 button will send out a pulse into the world around you that will highlight items that can be collected or interacted with, clues, or enemies in your vicinity. When using it to track it will highlight footprints and other signs, and in certain circumstances display recent events that have transpired in that location in the form of a ghostly image of the individual being tracked, which represents John's intuition and ability to decipher his environment. The game employs a directional close combat system somewhat like that used in the 'Arkham' series of Batman games although not as advanced. Pushing the right stick in the direction of an enemy and pushing R2 will unleash a melee attack with your currently equipped weapon and as such can be used to fight off multiple enemies at once. The R1 shoulder button meanwhile can be employed at key moments in order to roll out of the way of incoming counter attacks. Be warned however, your character only has a limited amount of endurance that will be drained by prolonged fighting and result in him becoming slow and sluggish, therefore the key to close combat is in timing rather than mindless button bashing. In combat even lone enemies can be quite difficult to dispatch and may require five or six hits depending on which weapon you have selected before they are killed. Additionally John is just a normal man and so it can take as little as four or five blows or a couple of gunshots to bring him down early in the game before you have the option to upgrade his stats by discovering NERO stations (abandoned by the government during the crisis) where NERO injectors can be found, which allow you to increase your health, stamina, or focus. The key then is not to bite off more than you can chew and to try and plan battles out before you engage in them.Freakers are not especially tough on their own, but can often be found in packs of two or three which makes them much more challenging, and they will pursue and attack you with little regard for their own well being, so when facing them you will find more often than not that stealth is your strongest weapon.Crouching allows you to avoid detection, and you can also hide in bushes and tall grass as well as things like dumpsters in order to either pass them by or alternatively get into a position where you can dispatch them with a single swift knife blow to the back of the head, and you have the ability to throw a rock or an electronic distractor (basically a tape recording of something loud) in order to create a distraction and send freakers scurrying in that direction in order to investigate. These tactics can also be used with equal effect against human enemies.Noise - in the form of gunshots, explosions, or car alarms that can be inadvertently set off when searching vehicles - attracts attention and so can be your greatest enemy, however it can also be utilised as a potent tool too. Turning an alarm on or exploding a nearby oil fuel barrel for example can be used to attract swarms of freakers to a location where human enemies patrol in order that the mutated monsters do your dirty work for you. I came across a base built right above a nest of a couple of hundred freakers, and all it took was a little noise to pit freakers against humans. It certainly saves on bullets! When freakers gather in larger numbers they become hordes - often composed of several hundred individuals - and such hordes represent one of the most terrifying dangers of the game. They usually hibernate during the day and will not react unless specifically provoked, but at night they roam en-masse to hunt and feed and so can often be found where ever food and water is available, such as creeks and mass grave sites full of rotting bodies.A hordes strength is in it's sheer numbers and they can be a frightening sight to behold. The best tactic is often to avoid them completely, however it is possible to escape them by using the terrain around you, climbing over obstacles, through narrow gaps, or under low barriers in order to funnel them and slow them down so that their numbers become a disadvantage. You accumulate experience by completing missions as well as side tasks (for example destroying all freaker nests in your area), and experience can be spent on several dozen skills that will increase your ranged combat, melee combat, or survivalist abilities by doing things such as increasing the size of your endurence bar or increasing your weapon reload speed or ammo capacity. The games currency is ears cut from dead freakers, and these can be spent on weapons, bike upgrades, ammo, and other items at friendly trading points of which there are several scattered around. To trade with an outpost you first however need to build trust with that outpost by running missions for them. Before building trust they will still allow you to buy basics like fuel and ammo, but each outpost is unique and will sell weapons and vehicle upgrades that the others don't, and if you're going to want access to them then they're going to want you to spend your time helping them out.In terms of complaints there are some. First of all the game has several serious bugs and glitches. I have noticed a persistent bug where the game music and much of the sound will cease and remain missing unless you relaunch it, but then often crash again within minutes of relaunching. I have also had cases of in-game character speech being repeated on a loop, occasional graphics and sound lag, and a could of fatal game crashes. In terms of the game itself, it can feel a little samey at times. There's little variety in the environment, and whilst being an 'open world' game that world is not especially big - certainly in no way as big as the likes of Red Dead and GTA that will have influenced it - and there's really not that much to do out there when you're not out on a mission apart from the occasional random encounter with bandits or a stranger in need of help, hunting the occasional animal, or scavenging for the same components over and over again. There's also not massive amounts of variety in the games main enemy the freakers - big one's, small ones, fast ones - it's pretty standard. Neither the lead character or any of the supporting characters are anywhere near as compelling or interesting as those in games like Red Dead, and nor is the story. It's good, but it's not great.Despite all of this 'Days Gone' is still a decent game that is for the most part fun to play. It's visually excellent, often tense and thrilling to play, and it's combination of open world travel, gun play, brawling, and light RPG elements such as resource collection and management and character advancement and customisation make it somewhat akin to a combination of Red Dead Redemption and 'The Road', Cormac McCarthy's book/film about a man struggling to get by in a blasted post-apocalyptic landscape full of savages, so you'll probably still get plenty from it if you're a fan of the genre.7/10. 8/10 if they ever sort the bugs out.

A majority of the reviews I read for this game gave it a three star rating. It was criticised for being repetitive, glitchy and treading familiar ground. Having recently completed Read Dead Redemption 2, Hitman 2, Assassin's Creed Odyssey and A Plague's Tale, I needed a new game to play and, despite the lukewarm response to its release, I decided to give Days Gone a go.I'm loving it. Absolutely loving it.I've spent many hours playing the game and so this isn't a knee jerk response based on initial impressions, but rather a considered opinion based on experience of the game and my experience as a gamer. In response to the criticisms of it being repetitive,I say this; show me an open world game where many of the missions aren't variations on a theme. Red Dead Redemption 2 includes collections, deliveries and base clear outs a plenty, yet is described by some as the greatest game of all time. The latest addition to the Hitman franchise was more of what had come before and Assassin's Creed Odyssey received five star reviews, but I found it more repetitive than Days Gone. I should be clear, I'm not being critical of these games. I knew what to expect when I bought them and enjoyed them all. Go into Days Gone with your eyes wide open, knowing there will be some similar missions, and you won't be disappointed. I would also say this; the repetitive tasks such nest clear outs have long term beneficial effects and so there is a reward for tasks that some might consider repetitive. If, like me, you are a great fan of stealth games and relish the cat and mouse experience of hiding, sneaking and clearing the way before deciding when to strike the final blow, this is a game you'll enjoy. Days Gone rewards patience and planning, knowing when to attack and knowing your exits and escape routes when you do. If you don't get continued satisfaction from this kind of gaming experience, perhaps this isn't for you. Particularly if you prefer the Call Of Duty approach, which will almost certainly get you killed in a game world where weapons aren't particularly powerful or plentiful and hordes of freakers can overwhelm you in seconds.I bought the game a number of months after release and so it's probable that the glitches and bugs mentioned in some reviews have been ironed out and that subsequent updates were installed along with the game. They must have been because, one or two instances aside, there's nothing excessively buggy about the game. Once again, other games of this size suffer from glitches and, in the time I've played so far, the game hasn't crashed, unlike those mentioned earlier in this review. As I've said, many sandbox games tread familiar ground, rehashing missions and, to some degree, narratives and character types. I don't believe Days Gone does this to a greater extent than any other game in this genre. In fact, the motorcycle element of the game is new to me and one I really like. Completing missions with one eye on the gas tank adds a new kind of challenge. In the event of your bike stuttering to a stop, having to traverse woodland teeming with freakers in the hope of reaching a location with some gasoline and carrying it all the way back may be a grind for some, but, in my opinion, it adds a sense of realism that enhances the experience. Customisation is always enjoyable and improving the motorcycle, which is integral to gameplay, is very satisfying. In terms of characterisation, the game's protagonist is no Joel, Ellie or Arthur Morgan, in fact he's a bit of a douche, but Deacon is a step up from Odyssey's Alexios, and almost every Assassin's Creed lead character for that matter. Deacon is pretty likeable and convincing, and the game is well-scripted and superbly acted. Yes, it plays on common post-apocalyptic zombie tropes, but if you're a fan of these tropes in films and TV shows, you won't be disappointed by a video game that plays on them. This review may sound like a defence of the game, but I feel like it needs defending. It's been criticised for being lacklustre, but I'm finding it anything but. It looks great and is one of those games that I just can't wait to return to, looking forward to the hour when I can load it up, and there haven't been many of them recently. As a hardcore gamer with plenty of experience of games of this type, I heartily recommend Days Gone.

Finally took the plunge and bought this in January after keeping an eye on the much improved post-update reviews - and lower price of course! It took a lot of stick on release for being buggy but after completing it to platinum I only uncovered a few minor ones; people stuck in and out of cars or the last bandit in a camp facing the wrong way after carnage had ensued around him for example. Certainly nothing to get stressed about put it that way.I was a massive fan of the under-rated Mad Max game and I see this as its kind of spiritual successor. It certainly shares a lot with that game - lots of rampaging across the wasteland (ok Oregon…), camps to clear, excellent gunplay and some brutal melee. The main difference being in this one that you’re on a very cool and upgradeable motorcycle. It starts off as a weedy scrambler but finishes as a knobbly tired behemoth that you could cross continents on in a straight line only stopping for fuel and coffee. It really gains in size and stature (and jazzy livery) and off-roading capabilities though a rampaging bear or wolf could still knock you off if you’re not paying attention. Time to fix it up and once again enjoy the marvellous scenery and fabulous changing weather of the North West US.Other game influences/similarities are clearly The Last of Us and third party shooters like the Uncharted games though this lacks the latter’s puzzles and humour. A new IP being mentioned in the same breath as Naughty Dog’s finest offerings is high praise but it does hold it’s own against them IMO and that’s even before you get to the game's USP, the hordes. Oh man, these are scary but when you're ready to take them on make for an excellent and adrenaline filled challenge though you'll need to be tooled up with the right weapons and “throwables” (grenades and Molotovs etc) to beat them. The only downside is the rather cumbersome item selection wheel which is an acquired taste but not a game-breaker once you are used to it.The story telling is very good with well-formed characters though your lead Deacon himself, can be a bit of a dcik and has a strange moral compass - getting all antsy about murderers and rapists before proceeding to slaughter them all himself. He also sounds a bit “Mayor West” when coming across infestations etc but it does have a well formed plot and I particularly liked the eerie twist at the end of the Nero story line so look out for that. Although quite repetitive at the start once you settle into your drifter lifestyle it does get quite addictive but it's no GTA as far as extra-curricular activities are concerned.I would though call it a “fair” game with all the hordes being optional so don't not buy this game because of them, you can actually skip those required to complete the story. The platinum trophy is definitely attainable (on easy if you like) if you are prepared to put the hours in. The one trophy that gave me the most trouble was a five second nitrous powered drift! If you really don’t want to do battle with the hordes, and the ones in the Southern part are definitely more of a challenge, you can reset the camps and/or infestation zones on completion of the story to farm XP and get the last skill points. This is the first game in a long while that I’ve really looked forward to picking up when getting home and would highly recommend it for relieving those lockdown blues.

I've been playing this game for long enough to know what it's all about, and it is without a doubt the best open world game I've ever played. And yes that includes Red Dead Redemption II.As Deacon St. John - an ex Mongrel 1% biker - living in the near future where a zombie apocalypse has swept the world, and swept fast. There are few camps left where you can pick up jobs, as well as clearing out Zombie nests along your way, taking on the occasional hoard of brain hungry freakers to get to your Nero booster, and collecting all the things you need to survive along the way.As the game progresses, you'll get skill points which will go towards your inventory of different benefits. You'll also pick up Nero Boosters which will boost your stamina, health or focus. The higher you are on all of these, the higher your chance of surviving, or even taking on a hoard.I've probably played well over 100 hours so far, and there still seems like a hell of a lot to do, and the storyline is riveting. It's one game I actually shed a tear at one point.I did for Arthur too actually. But this game is without a doubt the best game I've ever played. It's absolutely flawless, apart from falling through the earth into nothing earlier, it's not glitchy like RD2, there are no floating horses. If I had some tips for when I started playing;Don't forget the side missions. Pushing through the story will get you too far too quickly.Know which camp deals in weapons and which deals in mechanics, and sell your bounties accordingly.Upgrade your fuel tank asap.Follow question marks to hostages, or other humans, but they will ALWAYS be trying to kill you.Use skill point on "repair melee weapon" asap. It's much easier than using your boot knife.Btw, I love that a lot of the survivors and marauders are female. It's hilarious having a little woman running at you when you're carrying your Superior Mace.

In all honesty I knew this game would probably be up my street before it came out but I was shocked by the reviews, a lot of which were really negative. As general public gamers started to play it though it became clear that a lot of people thought the critics were wrong and that it was a great game, albeit with some bugs.I decided to buy it after watching a few youtube video reviews from people who were not proper critics and my god what a good decision that was. days Gone is genuinely one of the best games I've played in years. It's a huge, beautiful world to explore, the gameplay loops of sourcing materials, burning nests, killing freaker hordes and taking down bandit outposts are all really fun (and nowhere near as repetitive as reviews claimed)and the story missions are great, some excellent in fact. The story does start out a bit slow but the acting and graphics on the main characters is spectacular and once you get to know more characters and the plot opens up, the game really starts to shine. There are some bugs still, mainly the frame rate which is still choppy (though my PS4 is a basic model and old too) and I have spotted some occasional floating objects but honestly these are very easy to ignore. I've not quite finished the game yet though I'm quite far through (on the second map - yes there's two!) and I'm going to be gutted when I finish it.I really hope that a sequel is announced because Days Gone is one of the best new IPs in years.

This is arguably one of the most immersive and interesting open world games I have played. The storyline is almost film like, the characters are relatable and the cut scenes and dialogue genuinely interesting (if somewhat a little long). The acting and animation is good and the body language and expressions from characters makes them so human. This then supports what is a really really good game. The gameplay is excellent and the ability to play open world is a real treat. The weapons get progressively stronger and I’m now playing on “new game +” which means all the good weapons and updated motorbike from completing it first time round are available from the beginning. And you can fast forward most of the cut scenes. So value for money, you can play again and again.Weapon selection and usage is slick and the AI of the enemies is clever; so not too predictable. This is a single player, FPS, not linked to online play (hallelujah). Once you’ve downloaded the game onto the PS4 and any supporting updates. You can then just play the game.I paid £20 for this on Amazon and it’s prob the best, most playable, most enjoyable game (pound for pound) I’ve ever played.

This game, is one of the reasons players must buy a PS4. it is the epitome of absolutely fantastic. I've been palying for a bit now but haven't got far in the story theres so much to do. its creepy and jumpy and scary but also has a great storyline to follow that really keeps you interested. there are hordes of zombies that will chase you and theres raiders and stuff to explore, you'll never look at tunnels, barns, churches or towns the same. Its an amazing game and if I could give it 6 out of 5 stars I would. The last time I got so into a game was probably God of war last year or year before and I went for my first platinum on that because it was so good, this game definitely rivals it; if your undecided,I hope this review really pushes you in the right direction. I bought it for 54 quid and to be honest, its worth every penny so far and I'm still on the first region out of 3 with a game time of probably around 10 hours now....that's how good, interesting and glued into it you get. deffo buy chaps and gals.

This game is really good but it takes along time to get to that stage their idea of a skill trea is to make you trash so that you become normal then a super hero. I fully understand why reviewers weren't too kind to this game beacuse they never finish games and only play the start and oh god the start is just terrible aiming and shooting are trash, your garbage bike breaks and runs out of gas every two seconds, ammo is rare and not effective. Then the whole idea the game was sold on which is the hordes come to the game super late and they all of a sudden shift from that scary enemy that will kill you in a second to that easy round of COD zombies.I love the mession struction tho and that the mapis not littered with icond of the same exact mission even though missions repeat themselves they somehow manage to make them more intresting than the typical ubisoft game.

Been a long time since I was so drawn into a game. The story is brilliant, it starts off a little bit slow but as it progresses it turns into a masterpiece of a story and keeps you interested with its twists and turns. The graphics are excellent, the controls and movement are fluid and fun. And rest assured there is plenty of gameplay time involved here. Hordes, story, outposts and plenty of other things to do.I was put off buying this game for a long time and gave in and paid £16 for it. I would of been happy paying £50 for this game it’s absolutely brilliant. The only annoying thing is there are a few bugs in the game. Not game breaking but the gameplay and story 100% make up for it.When I finally complete it I’ll be replaying the whole game on survival mode.Haven’t been this engrossed in a game since “the last of us”.Brilliant.

Very fast and cheap delivery, it is a very interesting game with a good concept drawing influences from games such as the walking dead and The last of us. Collecting materials and taking back camps is a staple in the game as they are in most modern open world games nowadays. The shooting is very clunky and sometimes a little frustrating, very reminiscent of Uncharted 1 with how the aiming works and the switching shoulders and the third person perspective. The zombies themselves are very well designed and the 'hordes' are very formidable and should be avoided until late game. Overall a very good game that is a lot of fun, not perfect by any means but a very fun PS4 exclusive.

Wanted this game cause i wanted to be in a world where there weren't many humans and as such, the character can rule & own the lands since there's no humans to stop him. This game falls through beautifully!Heard alot of negative reviews but i didn't agree with much of them after i played. Beautiful graphics, unusual but interesting story, awkward character personality that becomes loveable. There's plenty of enemy camps to invade, wipe them out & claim that land as your own ::) using them to fast travel, sleep at, change weapons or refuel bikes etcThe bike gameplay is garbage at the beginning. But gets incredibly better as you progress through the game.

20.7.2019

Quick delivery as always. Figured this would be a straight forward zombie slaying adventure game but happily I was dead wrong (pun intended). This game requires thoughtful planning and tactical approaches to survival and progression. The weapons are a little weak but I'm still in the early stages. Stealth is key. Graphically speaking the environment is well drawn and detailed with a dark palette in keeping with the apocalyptic theme and the controls are not as simple as they could be but you soon get used to them. A solid title for zombie fans and every victory is satisfying.

So, the general chatter seems to be that the reviews for this have been bad (sitting at 72 on meta critic). But I think that's harsh, true there is little here that is groundbreaking but it does a lot of things very well. I feel a 7 or 8 out of 10 would be a fair score which, to me, would be above average. I think we expect too much from games at times and feel a 7 is bad, it really isn't.I have finished the campaign and enjoyed it throughout. The only criticism I have is that the voice actor for Deacon doesn't seem to fit the character model but that really is minor.

I am a 55 year old gamer and have played a wide variety of games over the years. I bought this back in March as I had ran out of games to play and it was more on the off chance that I purchased it. I certainly made the right decision it’s simply one of the best games I have ever played and although I have finished the main storyline I am still completing other missions some 5 months later. It has a cracking storyline that really engrossed me in many respects it reminded me of RDR2. I can’t recommend this game highly enough.

8.12.2020

By far the best game of the ps4 generation, graphically, gameplay and overall immersion/atmosphere are top notch. At times the atmosphere is like the creepy intro to the shining. Other times its like being in the movie I am legend. Its made by the same people who made some of the best and trail blazing 3rd person shooters that were called syphon filter many mlpns ago. These people really know how to make a fantastically playable game. A true classic. Buy it and enjoy it, you will not regret it.
