I purchased 'Darkness Within: In Pursuit of Loath Nolder' by Zoetrope Interactive after playing (and thoroughly enjoying) another Lighthouse Interactive published point 'n click game 'Barrow Hill'.Now I like FPS shooters as much as the next testosterone pumped 27 year old, but now and again I like to stretch the old brain matter. This game does exactly that and in some parts it isn't very forgiving. The story goes along the lines of you taking the role of Police Detective Harold E. Loreid who is assigned to a murder case, the main suspect being Mr Nolder of the title, a private investigator hired by the victims brother to find, er...The victim. The protagonist delves into a shady Lovecraftian world of conspiracy and horror as he attempts to solve the case and hold onto his sanity.I found myself having a good old think over several puzzles in the game. The type of puzzles where I have to walk away from the computer to make a cup of tea and have a walk around the house to have a think. There's a method in my madness, because I've completed the bugger using this strategy, you'll be happy to know. Anyhoo, I very much enjoyed this game, there are plenty of unanswered questions at the end and I was very happy to discover that this is actually a first in a trilogy of Loath Nolder titles. Huzzah! Zoetrope Interactive, have a biscuit and a cup of tea on me...

This is a thouroughly enjoyable point and click adventure that has a feel of a good psychological thriller albeit it might get boring if you get stuck dead at something, but that applies to all puzzle games so it's no critisism. The story is well thought out and researched and I just realised it is a part of a series which lessens my slight dumbfoundedness (yeah, this word doesnt even exist I bet, but it's to the point) at overly cryptic ending (for my taste). The graphics are great looking but what I really liked was the atmosphere created not only by background music and graphics but those moments when your character is afraid his gaze starts to dart around and the vision becomes hazy,he blinks when he sees something he isn't expecting and all of that really adds to the creepiness factor... It also might have something to do with me playing it at 2 am, of course. All in all, in my humble opinion, the guys directing this game did a fantastic job.I recommend this game if you're tired of all the fast paced FPS and repeatitive RPGs and decide it's time to use that head of yours for somthething other than clicking the buttons as fast as you can in a specific sequence. Puzzles are good in the game, that is, there is logic to them (and sometimes absence of such when you're playing a dream sequence) and method.A 5 star masterpiece!

I have been playing a few of this genre of games recently and had been really looking forward to playing Darkness Within. After hearing it was made by same people who made barrow hill, I had high hopes. And I wasnt disapointed, it is vastly superior, and had very intellegent puzzles that actually involved a bit of detective work, a pleasant change from the random clicking of objects in your inventory that so many similar games tend to require.Gameplay was atmospheric, the story kept you interested and soundtrack kept you on edge throughout. My only real critisicm is that it is very short. The back cover claims it has over 30 hours of gameplay, I bumbled through and still finished it in 10 1/2 hours, and although I did not find all secrets, I doubt very much they would account for another 20 hours of gameplay! Also make sure you install the patch, encountered quite a few bugs before I downloaded.Looking forward to next 2 installments, hopefully they will be along soon.

I honestly really enjoyed this game. A good traditional point and click, with a fair chill factor. But there are a few catches. You need to take into account that its part one of three or you are going to be really disappointed at the ending. If it had been a stand alone game, I would have given it a lower rating but I am marking it higher on the understanding there is more to come. It's very short, I managed it in just less than seven hours, which is probably the shortest time I have ever taken to complete a game. Having said that, the graphics are very pleasing and apart from a few glitches which were cured by downloading a patch from the official site, the gameplay is fairly smooth. If I was buying it again, I think I would be waiting for the other episodes to be released, as I feel cheated by the less than satisfactory ending.

I really loved this game. Not only does it have all the essential ingredients of a really good adventure pc game, it is also tremedously spooky and tense - it had me on the edge of my chair for most of the game.I can't wait for the sequal which is I believe is due for realease sometime in 2009.

Played this for few hours now, and really enjoying it. I gather from reviews that it's somewhat short, but so far I've been impressed with the mood, the art and the chills (especially the noise in the corridor bit.. very Lovecraft). Looking forward to finishing it.. probably at 4am :)
