The BG is simple excellent, even though it doesn't have many of the fancy high end features like airbail or magseal, the simplicity brought the price down so much, the value you get from the BG is just incredible. Yet still, the standard features offered by DAIWA is still surpassing most brands on the market. BG is a direct competitor to 200+ gbp product with only half of the price tag. It's salt water ready with high power sealed drag and full aluminum body. Digigear rotor system offers excellent line twist management which is only matched by shimano's dyno system. And screw on handle on a reel sales for 100 pounds, this is unheard in the past for big brands.Through the decades of my fishing experience,I had more than 2 dozens of reels, from cheap sub 50 to mid high end 250 pounds priced ones. I'm not a pro fishing man, my buying intention is always to get the best value out of every pound I spend. I've seen how products changed over the last two decades and knows very well what matters and makes the difference. I always tell my friends to buy shimano because they put on their best spool system on every reel they make even it's the cheapest alivio range. In the recent year though, I'm favoring DAIWA over shimano because:1. DAIWA is now putting their same high end spooling system on cheap reels as well.I have a ninjia as well spools just the same as the BG and just the same as the saltiga.2. Daiwa reels are so smooth, while you argue if shimano does the same what makes choose daiwa over shimano, I can tell you it's the smoothness, even at 150-200 pounds range, shimano just doesn't do smoothness as well as daiwa. Arguably shimano may feel more balanced and probably have more high tech offered. e.g. Aero FA4000 and Stradic fk is an excellent reel in comparison with similar price range, similar feature offered and in similar weight cat.3. Salt water or fresh water, I often find shimano's reel with the BG's price range often isn't salt water ready, this goes true for the Aero FA4000.4. Price, yes again price. I would be happily to buy a shimano stradic over the Daiwa BG if they are in the same price range, Right now Stradic FK costs 30% more than the BG, for that price I chose the Lexa with oil seal, upped one size to Lexa 4000 and paid exactly the same price of a Stradic FK. (Stradic FK is still an excellent reel, it offers other features that you may care more than I do.)I know my arguments may down to my personal preference a lot, but I hope writing down my opinion on them gives readers a good variety of viewing angles.

This is a great all around reel. The smoothness is great. When you perform your maintenance on a Daiwa BG 4500 - 8000, you will notice there is no reverse switch like on the Daiwa BG 1500 - 4000. Daiwa installed a anti-reverse larch that pin the pinion gear and shaft in place. This subsystem integrates a fine gauge wire (preformed) to a specific shape. If you’re having issues with the anti-reverse after you performed a maintenance, it is likely the wire that is mounted on the main gear and the wire is put in the hole that the latch is connected to. You want the gap between both ends to be no more than 2-3mm. Also the Straight end of the wire should be perpendicular to the circular part of the wire. Also: if you’re having issues with the reels smoothness, you want to inspect all the bearings and make sure everything is properly installed and lubed up. There is a brass nut that affixes they bail to the reel frame. You will notice a black centering cap that holds 3 screws. If you are still having smoothness issues, you probably have that one brass nut tightened just a hair or 2 too much. Adjust the torque in small increments and spin the handle after each increment to “feel” what is the smoothest for you. I found that the black centering cap fits without any hassle when you have that brass nut torqued down properly. It is sorta funny how the adjustment of the fine wire that is mounted to the gear, even by 1mm, and tightening the brass nut down too much will make your reel feel off. This is a great reel, smooth high-quality bearings, ported out aluminum frame for maximum weight reduction. I own a Daiwa BG 3000,3500,5000,6500. All great reels.

2 WEEKS AT THE BOTTOM OF A RIVER. I was out fishing with the bois in our favorite honey hole. The rod and reel both securley fastend in the rod holder. And silly me i did not loosen the drag from earlier 22lbs of drag aint no joke. Then it happens the bite of a life time. In a matter of 5 seconds i went from the happiest person on the river to the most wet person on the river. For any fish to bend these broomsticks they have to be 15LB+. After about an hour of searching with the bois for it we gave up. Weeks past and we fished the same place few times trying to find it. Then we notice a small peice of metal sticking out of the water about 75 yds away we go to it pick it up and there is the rod and reel no hook but the weight is still on.I open the bail send the line out for a cast and reels great for being in muddy waters for more than 10 days. I own the 2000, 4500, and now a 5000 again haha. My honey is the best she replaced it after she found out i lost it. Now im a real DAIWA BOI (husband talking)

Was trying to decide between the Daiwa BG and the Penn Battle II. I already had a couple of the previous gen Penn Battle reels, so I decided to buy a pair of these 5000 Diawa BG reels and put them on my 12' surf rods. These reels are smooth! I replaced a couple of older EmCast reels and there really is no comparison. They are smaller, better looking, smoother and feel like you can really crank on them.I got the 5000 size because I almost always go back to braided line and these reels hold enough 65lb braid for my surf fishing needs. They fit nicely on my 12' rods and between the handle and the 'oversize digi-gear' it feels like you can really crank a lunker in.I just got back from a trip and the largest fish I caught (unfortunately) was a 3' blacktip shark - the reel had no problem at all (and I wouldn't expect it to!).The reels more than met my expectation and I would not hesitate to buy again - you won't make a mistake with these reels.

Just got the reel and after careful inspection I am very satisfied with this reel. I've been a life long Penn owner and since I fished saltwater I have had a Penn SS650, a SS750 and a SS850 for over 35 years... great reels and parts are still available. Now I'm retired so I bought this Daiwa to fish for bass and other freshwater species in FL and GA, and I wanted to change to Daiwa because I like the look, the reputation and the positive reviews. Since I believe fisherman catch fish not reels, I refuse to pay more than $100 for a freshwater reel. I've tried the expensive reels and this BG line has quality, looks, is a great value and is smooth as silk.Who knows I may buy a larger BG for saltwater when I can't get parts for my old Penn SS's. I bought a KastKing Perigee 7'1" M for this reel and I will need to fight and catch some fish to see if I like the rod.

I went with the BG4500. I prefer very light tackle due to a bad rotator cuff, but at the pier I usually fish at the dolphin will grab your catch as you reel it in unless you get it in really fast so I needed a heavier rig. I paired it with a medium-action 7 foot Ugly Stick. As I expected the heavier rig allows me to get the fish past the dolphins 80% of the time as compared to 20% with ultra-light tackle. The reel is very smooth and the drag works very well. Getting long casts due to the larger spool diameter. The 4500 has a manual bail which takes some getting used to but I don't even notice it any more. No corrosion issues,I do rinse it with fresh water after most trips.I am mostly fishing for Spanish Mackerel and Bluefish with it.The BG series is very popular at the pier as you get very good quality without having to spend several hundred dollars.

Bought a Stradic Ci4+ at the same time as this reel and set the two up pretty much the same 10lb braid and a 12 foot leader of 6lb floro. The BG is on a Sellus 6ft medium strength fast action rod and it balances perfect. The 4lbs of drag for the 2000 is quite light; however, more than adequate for 4-8lb rainbows with a little bit of hand braking. This reel out performs the stradic day in and day out. It is the smoother of the two reels by far at less than half the price. Sturdy build, feels quality, and a superb bail (you know when you flip the bail and you think it's fully open but when you cast it closes snapping your line and sending $10 flying cough stradic cough)Summary:Pros:- smooth- castsvery well- braid ready- solid bail- serviceable- saltwater ready- sturdy- PRICECons- weight- drag on the 2000 is just 4lbs10/10 would buy again

The bail looked a little flimsy compared to my Penns. Very smooth action and drag. Mounted it on a 9 ft Ugly with 12 lb mono and went wading in an early morning rising tide, whipping soft plastic curlies. Got a couple nice snappers then a large silver trevally that put up quite a fuss. The reel worked great, drag was very smooth, got the fish in the net after a couple nice runs. Measured it on shore- 29.5 inches tip to tail. Next morning was even better. Bail still looks flimsy but we'll see.Side note- I live on a small tropical island with the Pacific on one side and the Philippine Sea on the other. Seems like these larger (they get much bigger) trevallys arrive a lot earlier in the year than they used to.Climate change/global warming?

I absolutely LOVE this reel. The BG series is the best choice and is better than some $200+ reels. I've used it for surf and pier fishing and have caught dozens of fish, up to 25lbs, and have had no problems from it in the salt water. I've had friends that used to have the Daiwa Saltist reels, that bought the BG, and got rid of all the Saltist because the BG is almost as good, but around half the price. I don't think that's saying that the Saltist is bad, but just that the BG is extremely good for its price and may be underpriced compared to comparably priced reels in the market today. If you're looking at getting something like a Penn Fierce or Battle,I'd recommend spending a few extra bucks to get the BG- you won't be disappointed.

Excellent reel, used it for the first time yesterday, went fishing for triggerfish in Puerto Penasco, I fitted the reel with Berkeley trilene 40 lb test line. This is an awesome reel, very sturdy, where others reels have locked up while trying to reel in just one triggerfish (cochito)at a time, this reel allowed me at times to reel up 3 triggerfish at a time with no hesitation. And that is no easy task . I would definitely recommend this reel & give it5 stars & 2 thumbs up2nd fishing trip with my new reel . This reel is awesome . I reeled up 4 triggerfish & 2 Rock bass on a 6 hook rig at one time today. I included a picture of some of the fish I caught today.

I have four of these reels - two each in the 3000 & 4000 size that I use for inshore and surf fishing with lures and jigs. I pair the 3000 reels with 7' and 7.5' medium power inshore rods and travel rods and occasionally I pair the 3000 with my 8' st croix mojo medium power surf rod. I use the 4000 reel with my 8', 9' and 10.5' medium/medium heavy surf rods. I have caught small inshore trash fish, gator blues, channel catfish, 20+ lb stripers, flounder, croaker, barracuda and tarpon with these reels. Super smooth drag and holds braided line really well. Would highly recommend for anyone tossing lures from shoreline jetties, beach, piers or boats!

Purchased 3000 and 3500 size .Excellent reels for price. Great value and performance. Sizing is larger with line capacity when compared to Shimano Stradic or Symetre. Slower gear ratios. Better feel than Penn Battle 2( I have 3 of these )Only drawback is the way the line ( 832 Suffix or Daiwa J Braid) spools initially but this evens out if you use the included washers . Otherwise you get a bottom heavy spooling. These were spooked unfortunately at local tackle shop on machine .13 cents a yard so take advantage of free backing if offered. I put 50 yards of Trilene XT green on it enables me to get 125 yards on 3000 Model. 150 yards on 3500 Model

I have used the Daiwa BG 4000 several times now. Mechanically the reel works excellent, it reels very smooth and the drag system feels well built. There are some plastic components on the reel, the rotor and and the bottom of the main body. I do mostly shore fishing and these parts will scratch and get marked as you need to be cautious when you place your reel down. In my opinion the reel is well worth the money spent as it feels it will last a long time. It would be the perfect reel if it were all metal construction. This reel would have no problem pulling out any fish from our Ontario waters, except for the Sturgeon possibly.

Very impressed. I have the 6500 and the 3000. The 6500 has fast line pickup, anti-reverse bearing + anti-reverse dogs, manual bail, huge main gear and pinion gear, SMOOTH DRAG and holds 450 yards of 65# braid. All that for only $100! I also have the 3000 for inshore bass on a 7’ cousins 10-17# spinning rod and it’s a nice combo that I have been putting a lot of fish on recently and I can say, its an awesome reel. Daiwa really knows how to make fantastic spinners. The technology from the Saltigas trickles down to these BG’s. I would highly recommend The Daiwa BG series.
