This is a complete set of metal strings. E is carbon-steel, A is steel/aluminium, D and G are steel/nickel. Personally, I prefer non-metal strings as they are a bit easier on the fingertips, but I suppose it’s a matter of taste. The string ends have loops that fit into the fine-tuners in the tailpiece, and the other ends are plain to go into the pegs at the pegbox. All are colour-coded.I have no idea about tensioning – I adjust until the sound is correct. However, G seemed quite low-tension by comparison with the others. Being looser, it produces a less distinct sound that was unimpressive. I would not want to perform with that string in place. The other strings were fine, and gave a more pleasing sound across the range. I found they all stayed in tune, and were reasonably in tune straight out of the case. For me as an amateur of moderate skill, who hasn’t had a lesson in 40 years, I found this set of strings okay but not outstanding, but pretty good for the money. They produce a reasonable sound but not terrific. These are inexpensive, and that’s the best thing about them. Excellent strings cost a lot more than these, so they are very much at the beginner/budget end of the market.

Like so many things you get what you pay for. These D'Addario violin strings are a quarter the price of professional-grade strings. But they're also more expensive than the cheap rubbish you might get on a violin that has just shipped from a factory in China. And this means they definitely have a place on the shopping list of someone who has their first violin. Someone trying to save their family from the scratchy sounds that are inevitable from a beginner. These medium tension strings are steel cored and have a bright sound, but not harsh, and they are smooth under your fingers. If you have a relatively cheap violin you should find them to be a reasonable cost upgrade.Like all D'Addario strings they are reliable quality and represent satisfactory value for money. To get better sound you need to spend considerably more. And for a lot of people a set of fifty quid strings represents a sizeable proportion of the cost they paid for their violin in the first place - like putting expensive wheels on a Vauxhall Corsa.

As steel strings go, these are not bad, and a lot better than the previous set that I had on my violin. They are somewhere on the warmth spectrum towards the synthetic core/cat-gut end, but can't hide those steely overtones completely. The claim to be unaffected by temperature is slightly over-enthusiastic. All materials change with temperature, but these are really pretty stable once they've settled down from new, and will only really suffer if carried in a very hot (or, presumably, very cold) car.The inner packaging has a key to the colour-coded braiding on the thread (which goes at the nut end), which I found very easy to follow. All four strings have a small plastic sleeve to prevent them cutting into the soft wood of the bridge...my previous set only had this on the 'E' string.Of course you can buy better strings for more money, but these are not bad, and I would say priced about right. Ideal for "the developing player", as the manufacturer says.

I'm just a notch above absolute beginner so take this with a pinch of salt, but from my experience they seem good. To me they seem clearly designed to be the 'solid mid ranger', the work horse string that's going to do for practice or the majority of cheaper end violins like mine, that are getting used often but not as part of a precision orchestra or anything like that.Very durable, mine have taken some beating during practice and none have broken so far after a month. Tones are nice, audibly better than what came with my violin though at this stage nothing remarkably spectacular.Overall I can't fault them and they have had no problems. I would maybe query the price, however they have lasted very well so far with no deterioration so though expensive I can't see myself and my current skill and needs needing to buy any more anytime soon.

I am only a beginner, but these are the third set of strings on my violin. The factory ones were rubbish, of course (I didn't know that at the time). I upgraded with the cheapest set of strings I could find and used them for about a year and a half. I have just put a set of these on. Wow! The difference is very obvious. At first the E was piercing a hole in my skull and I seriously thought about getting a different one, but it has calmed down (or I have got used to it). The G and D are great the A is sounding a bit duller than the other two wound strings, but it is still an improvement on what it replaced. At this price, I wished I had not bothered with my cheapie strings last time...I'm sure I'll be using these for a while. My next set will be Helicores though, onwards and upwards!

Well these are a great, strong set of strings. I've had mine for well over a year and they're still going, though i will probably change them in the near future (i will buy these again) One thing i must say is that these strings settle very quickly and as others say, hold their tune. A great budget set of strings, but by budget i don't mean crap. They do produce a warm tone and i find them to be good for all genres, eg irish trad to country to classical. I strongly recommend these strings as they provide a warm tone, hold their tune, settle quickly and last. Plus you wont need to do many gigs to pay them off! Also the E string does not give a harsh sound.

I have found the strings value for money, perfect for what I want, they are at the moment wearing in. I am so glad that they came with the colour coded bit at the ball end of the string, just to remind you which string is which!!

Great set of strings - really transformed my son's Stentor Student violin, but it did take at least a few days for the strings to settle. Excellent value for money. Will be getting another set for spare.

15.6.2013

Easy to install and colour coded (the diagram is in the packing somewhere) to help you put them in the right place - handy if (like me) you're putting strings on a violin you know nothing about for dd.

Brilliant sound, easy to install, fantastic clear tone very good for the price highly recommend. Also they stay tuned and settle quickly.

They sound great. A nice full tone for metal strings. Colour-coding is handy, the coding is on the box. What else is there to say?

12.4.2014

Good quality strings. I found that they did make a difference in how the violin responded with good resonances and ease of play.

For a quality violin these are fine quality sounding strings and excellent value for money. Will purchase again and recommend.

These were strung on to my boy's 1/4 violin by a professional violinist and she was impressed by the quality for this price.

10.11.2014

Good quality strings that produce a good sound. Prefer using Dominant strings now but for the price these are good back ups!
