As a family, we started using Cytomax while training for a backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon, back in the Winter/Spring of 2006. It was recommended to us by the owner of the local high-end bicycle store. The flavor is smooth, and the drink doesn't leave you with that cotton-mouth feeling that even water can produce, especially when it's hot. I'll warn you up front, this stuff is addicting. Once your body gets a taste of it, you WILL NOT exersise again without it. In fact, just the smell of the powder while you're mixing it will trigger a pavlovian response that you suddenly have the urge to go do something strenouos, and, you just want a huge drink of Cytomax. Weird, I know, but true.About the flavors. We've found the Cool Citrus to be the smoothest, truest, taste. Sort of a nice lemonade flavor. To us, all of the other flavors have some sort of a weird before, or after taste. For example, the Tangy Orange has sort of a powdery thing going on. The fruit flavors like the punch and the grape have a perfume thing going on. We haven't tried the apple or the chocolate, and won't.I'll be honest and say that I'm not loving the "Natural" and now I see it's coming with "Stevia" as the sweetner. Haven't tried the stevia version yet, and really, I'm not interested. Personally, I don't think the "natural" is as good as the original, definately doesn't taste as good. Now for my "Cytomax Story."In August of 2006 we did our first backpacking trip into the Grand Canyon. We didn't drink anything but Cytomax. It was brutally hot down in the gorge, and being first timers, we not only brought a ton of stuff, but we brought a ton of heavy stuff. We just about got laughed off the shuttle bus because our packs (especially mine) were so stupid huge. Seriously, picture a Low Alpine 75L pack filled to the brim, to the point that it has to be bear hugged, lifted up onto a rock, and then backed into, in order to put it on! What can I say, we were rookies. The cytomax kept us alive and well, but the real story is that during the hike out, we came across a young couple on the Bright Angel Trail, somewhere below 3mi House. As is typical for the Bright Angel, they were in tank tops, tennis shoes, no hats, and had come down with a 16oz bottle of water, each. It was 100*F+, and the girlfriend was broke down on the side of the trail with heat stroke. The boyfriend was talking about how he was going to run to the top to get her a soda. She was angrily complaining about what she would and wouldn't drink (one of the signs of heat stroke is lack of good judgement). I filled her 16 water bottle with Cytomax, and told her she could drink it, or wait for a helicopter. She decided to drink, and in about 10 minutes her lights came back on. We gave them both some snacks that we had, saw them one more time at one of the other rest houses, and I think they beat us out to the top! Seriously, that's how great Cytomax is.We use it year round now, for whatever exersise or sport we are doing, whether individually, or as a family. It's gone with us to the Grand Canyon, 5 years in a row, including just last week where my 70 year old mom went with us, rim-to-rim in 3 days, fueled by Cool Citrus Cytomax!

I've been cycling for over 20 years and have used Cytomax during almost that entire period. When I was younger I used to drink just water during duathlon and triathlon competitions and pay the burn the next days. But later an olympic athlete that I started training with clued me in on this amazing solution. After using this regularly on both training days and cycling competitions I felt great the following days. It allowed me to train harder and much more regularly. Even though you can push through the pain you otherwise would feel it makes it emotionally easier to get on the bike day after day. For longer multi-hour road races I found it easier to just double up water bottles with a slightly higher concentration level rather than bring along energy bars. It's all in how you can tolerate solid fuels and the level of exertion. I'm older now and still use it in spin classes. When ever I ran out waiting for a new bucket or tin I could tell the difference immediately. Instructions say you can take this before and after competition for even better effect but I never needed to the get needed benefits. Not to say after workouts wouldn't have helped. The key is that it's absorbed into your system quickly and bonds with the lactic acid in your muscles and helps neutralize it and get it flushed from your system. As for flavors, were all a bit different in tastes and tolerance. I would highly recommend you buy smaller containers of various flavors and share amongst some friends until you find the one's you like. You also need to work on the concentration level that your stomach doesn't stress over. You would be surprised at how difficult heaver flavored drinks can make you feel during extreme competitions.I once tried one of the flavors with ginseng in it. What a mistake, for me! I certainly didn't need it for competitions because you get pumped up enough. I then used it only for training rides and had to reduce the concentration levels until I was done with it. Not for me.

2018 Update - They have improved the flavor and now this drink is actually very delicious. It used to be fine, but now it is great. At this point I have used this product for 7 years and I continue to believe that it is extremely effective and has been really helpful for me when I play in tournaments. Instead of being completely destroyed after a game or two, I am still able to near full ability throughout the week.2011 Original Review - I'm a bit out of shape and getting back into shape hasn't been easy with all the soreness. A friend recommended Cytomax and it has really helped. While exercising I can do more reps than in the past and when I get 6 or 7 sets deep into my workout my reps only fall off slightly compared to before I was trying Cytomax. The other day I did a workout that I'd done 2 weeks before but this time I did not use Cytomax and the soreness that I am experiencing today is unpleasant to say the least. My experiment showed me that without using Cytomax I get considerable soreness the following day(s) whereas when I did use Cytomax I had relatively little soreness. Until I get back in shape I think I'm going to need this crutch. I'm 42 years old so that means that I experience a lot more soreness than a younger athlete. Someone younger and in better shape may not notice such a difference.

I have only used the tropical fruit, but I absolutely love this flavor! I just started using it in the last couple of weeks, so I cannot attest to the old recipe. However, performance wise, I start drinking a 1/2 scoop per 12 oz of water (according to the company 1 scoop = approx. 3 TBL) a few hours before I'm going to exercise, and keep up the 1/2 scoop regiment probably every hour before I actually exercise. Usually I don't like to drink any fluids while I'm exercising as it upsets my stomach, but I do take a few sips of this drink during the ride, (for the ride, I do 1 1/2 scoops per 16 oz of water) and I feel it definitely helps my performance. There were times prior to using Cytomax where I felt completely fatigued at the 13th mile of a 15 mile challenging bike ride. But after I started using this stuff, I felt fine at the 13th mile and even felt like I could another 7 miles. I've had no stomach issues either. I do 15 mile moderate and challenging bike rides approximately 5 times a week.

By far the best value among the "serious" sports drinks. Compare by serving - many times cheaper than Heed. Only thing cheaper is Gatorade powder, over which I greatly prefer this.Regarding complaints about the flavor, I never had the old formula, so I'm not sure if it was as great as some of the negative reviews below state. I also have never had New Coke. The flavor is mediocre, but keep in mind that it stays tolerable if you mix it strong or mix it weak. It stays decent if it gets warm at the end of a long ride. Ice cold, perfectly mixed Gatorade tastes better...but warm diluted Gatorade? Gag.The Tropical Fruit tastes the best at first, I think, but by the end of the tub I'm really sick of it.You might think the Pomegranate Berry tastes kind of like Hawaiian Punch. Cool Citrus is the most mild and consistently tolerable flavor if you're going to be drinking like ten bottles of the stuff. Haven't had Grape, because I don't like fake grape anything, and Tangy Orange has caffeine.

First off, Tangy Orange tastes like sh imho. Tropical Fruit hands down. Lived off this stuff for a little over a year now. Tropical Fruit got me through crazy work. Canvassed door-to-door seven to eight hours a day rain or shine, excessantly drank almost every day for a while, worked out and exercised like a monster or beast, and most recently been working as a server for nonstop four to six hour shifts continually active. This is my recover-all cure-all push-on-all. Co-workers always ask me what the hell I'm drinking, sarcastically joke I'm drinking/taking drugs, but most directly, always tell me to slow down. Without this stuff, I wouldn't be able to be the me I really am, high-energy,high-energy spending, high energy to be calm, and high energy to be active. Friend used to tell me about this stuff way back at least 10 years ago, and now I know what he means. If you have any questions leave me a comment below. -Alvin

I purchased CytoSport Cytomax Sport Energy Drink after trying a sample from a friend. I was experiencing bad headaches after long rides or those that I really worked up a sweat. At the time, I was only consuming water from 2 24 ounce water bottles, and sometimes even a 1 liter camel pack. With the humidity levels in Miami, FL, and the rate that I sweat at, I needed something to help hydrate and replenish all I was releasing. I can honestly say that this product has been a lifesaver ever since I've made it part of my rides. My headaches are down to a minimum, now I'm sure it's due to food consumption, but I can bounce back from my rides in no time! I never leave my house without ensuring I have Cytomax in my water bottles.I can say that I'm not worried about how I'm going to feel after a ride and I can now plan to do things shortly after without needing a long downtime period.

I started using Cytomax when it first came out - in the classic apple flavor. Back then I felt there was tangible proof of the claims that it prevented build up of lactic acid and helped an athlete perform at a high level for a longer period of time. This new stuff, while tasty in the tropical flavor, doesn't seem to have the same feeling. Sure, I'm older now and working the stair master and weights doesn't have the same intensity as a stage race, hundred mile training ride, or ten minute intervals, but Cytomax seems to be a good tasting drink more than a performance enhancer. It could be the odd apple flavor that's sadly unavailable was part of the mystique. Or maybe I'm just not seeking the endurance assistance I once was.In any event, I drink much more at the gym with this in my bottle, and that can't be a bad thing, right? Give it a try. You'll probably drink more, too.

I am not sure why all the bad taste reviews or reviews blasting "hidden" ingredients. The label is pretty clear what's in it. I decided to use this product instead of GU / Shot Blocks / Stingers etc on long runs and hikes because I can mix this in my water and just hydrate and carb up as I go. Gone are the days of trying to choke down a gooey sugar pack on a hot run. Since switching I have immediately noticed I do not get nearly as tired on longer hikes and runs and I can consume my calories as I drink which is far more palatable than trying to eat something while on a run. Food and heat DO NOT go together. I like the taste - is it sugary like Gatorade ? NO,but I can also drink it and I'm not thirsty 20 seconds later like you are with a sugary product - it has a clean finish and while its not a gourmet taste it certainly tastes good enough considering what it is.

I'm an avid road cyclist and have been using Cytomax for about the past three years. It does appear to make good on its claims of reduction of perceived exertion and longer sustaining of energy levels. I've sufficiently experimented with other products to be able to determine, for me at least, that the benefits obtained from Cytomax are not a placebo effect.I agree with other reviewers who've stated that the salutary effects of Cytomax tend to be especially noticeable during hot weather. The consensus among several of my fellow local riders is that the Tropical Fruit flavor is by far the most palatable, and I have to agree; I personally noted very little difference in taste when the manufacturer began using Stevia as a sweetener. It's light, and never cloying, even when I increase the concentration a bit for very hot days. Highly recommended.

Since I began using Cytomax, I've never cramped on my bike rides, my legs feel better after a hard ride, and my recuperation time has reduced. I use one scoop on each of my 2 bottles, for 1.5 hour rides. For rides over 2.5 hours, I put 1.5 scoops on each bottle, plus a scoop of SportQuest Carbo PRO, and I don't have to eat during the ride (which I hate to do), I get enough carbs from what I'm drinking. The taste is fine, at least for me. I use stevia a lot, as I distrust artificial sweeteners and stevia is the only natural sugar substitute (so for me it's another reason to like it), but even before I began using stevia,Cytomax tasted reasonably well for me.SportQuest Carbo PRO can be seen here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0036FH7OS/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_5

The electrolyte powder feels light and does not upset my stomach while doing high intensity training. I bike in a really hot/humid weather so keeping hydrated is essential for me. I take it as the instructions suggest, taking small amounts at a time, starting 5 minutes before working out. I only use one scoop per 20 oz of water, which is half of what is recommended on the label. It contains a good amount of electrolytes, so I drink half and that is enough for me. The only con is that it feels a bit watered down by taking half, and the taste is not as good as if I were taking two fool scoops. It dissolves easily in water,I just mix it in a water bottle without a shaker and I get a good dissolution of the powder just by shaking the bottle by hand.

I started using this product in the mid 90s when I was doing long distance bike tours of 150 miles. My first bike tour was in Wisconsin and the heat was record breaking at 113 degrees. Without Cytomax I don't believe I would have had the endurance to complete that ride or the many others without being completely dehydrated and would have had a longer recovery time. I started using Cytomax again for running events in Tennessee, a climate that is much hotter and more humid consistently. I went from 5ks straight to an ultra in a 12 hour endurance run and was able to complete 31.5 miles and place first in my age division at the age of 52. Can not recommend this product highly enough!

- Mixes really well- Good flavor and texture- Price is awesome compared to other supplements.Bought this to train for the Chicago marathon and after a couple weeks my wife and I found it to be indispensable. With the majority of our runs taking place during the summer months, we both loved the Electrolytes in the mix. We were both convinced of Cytomax's benefits when we had to do a couple long runs while on vacation - needless to say we did not feel well hydrated or energized on these runs and aside from the fact that we were traveling the only variable that changed was not having the Cytomax.

I've never been into any Sports Drink prior to this, so considering it, Cytomax has been awesome. Before using cytomax I would play tennis probably twice a week but now if I've cytomax I can play everday. I'm a guy in the mid 30's whose only form of exercise is playing tennis twice a week for about 4hrs total. After discovering this product I can now play for many more days. Somedays I think that I may not survive even for half n hour on th court but end up playing great for about 3 hrs. This product has greatly surprised me, I would recommend this product for everyone.
