It has been a real struggle to finally get a converter for a Vintage Cross Classic Century, as originally produced in the 1980s. Much confusing and contradictory advice is out there on the pen forums, and is also coming from specialist pen and ink suppliers - including Cross themselves. Some users of these lovely, slim pens which are particularly suitable for those with slender hands, who do not do well with the chunkier, heavier type of fountain pen, have come a cropper trying to fit these converters, which Cross say is only suitable for their Townsend range. The challenge is perpetuated by Cross, whose 'updated' version of that 1980s pen, the Century II, takes a different converter entirely, the screw-in type (orange) Despite sending photos of my Classic Century, and advising Cross that it was one from the 1980s, I was assured by them that the screw-in type would fit this (it didn't!) Fortunately, acknowledging their mistake they sent this one 'Townsend only' which slid gracefully into the housing. Once again I can happily mix bespoke colours.Part of the challenge here may be that the 'Classic Century' or even 'Century Classic' which Cross currently produce (which surely should be given a less confusing name) now takes the 'slim line' cartridges (which also fit my Classic Century!, though not as snugly as the stubbier, traditional cartridges) And the suppliers confidently tell me that the 'slim line' pens do NOT take converters at all. However.......the Classic Century from the 80s does.Confused?? Well, no wonder, so is everyone, it seems. All I can say for sure is that the old style Cross Classic Century, (last century) happily will take the Push-In Townsend converter. These vintage older pens are recognisable by their flatter, less decorated nibs - which come with the Cross name on the nib, but do not have the Cross embellished graphic, which the current 'Cross Classic Century' pens now have. As to whether these new pens take the Townsend converters, the screw-in Century II converters, or no converters at all this is beyond my knowledge. You are likely to be told 'Yes' 'No' 'try the other type' and 'these don't take converters'Good luck - but at least other lovers of Vintage Cross Classic Century pens from the 20th Century can rely on finding the Townsend converter will work.Otherwise, the best solution will be to source syringes with blunt needles from specialist pen and ink suppliers, and scout You Tube videos for instructions on how to fill spent Cross cartridges with bottled ink - its quite easy.

Not sure why this product is listed as a toy, but there we go.So obviously this converter is for Cross Townsend pens, but the comparison I draw is to my old Waterman pen and its converter. In many senses, it does what it needs to - it plugs in, sucks ink and allows it to be drawn out again during normal use.My only real disappointment is the air gap - with my old Waterman, when it sucked ink, it was full. Any air bubble could be flicked to the top, pushed out and refilled with ink. By comparison, it is difficult to get this converter more than 2/3 full of ink. It's not really a problem - I quite enjoy filling the pen, but it is an annoyance when my (broad nib)pen doesn't make it through a long meeting.

This is a high quality converter - it is solidly built, attractively designed and easy to use. A small air bubble forms, as is expected, but if its that important to you then a little concerted effort will remove it without too much hassle. Overall far more economical than cartridges, and you can choose from any number of inks. I personally use Diamine ink, which is high quality and very well priced. The Cross cartridge shape looks attractive, but unfortunately on comes in small and you cannot fit any other type of cartridge into the model which I have. For me this was a must have, and I am glad that it performs so well.

Most Cross fountain pens utilise a screw-in filler converter but a few including the Townsend, Century (original not the recent Model II) and a couple more need this push-in version. Operationally and in capacity, they are identical. However, it is not simply either-or as a few models are cartridge only and will accept a filler. It should be noted that the green version illustrated is of an older design and current versions are clear and colourless. Also, the tip by which they connect to the pen's filling system is now mostly black and not colourless.

Works well with any type of liquid fountain pen ink , only problem is you can't syphon a "full" tube of ink into it as the air already within the resovoir does not allow you to completely fill it . I'd say it's closer to around 70% full when first replenished . That said it's good value compared to using endless tiny disposable ink refills (made of plastic ) which would then end up in landfill or our oceans ...so from a purely environmental point of view buy this fountain pen ink converter It's a no brainer really .

Make sure you buy the correct converter for your Cross pen - I bought the wrong one first of all and then got this - the 'right' one. It's fab. Why? Because I can fill it up with ink once a week and I'm good to go, saving me lots of money. The Cross cartridges are piddly and last about four lines...well, you get the point. This would last for a good half dozen pages of A4.Works with the Archimedes screw principle. Easy to fill.

There are two very similar converters, this one (see the 8751 on the pack) and another one - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0044R7EQS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with 8756 on the pack.8751 is for Townsend and Aventura (per the back of the pack)8756 is for all Cross Fountain Pens EXCEPT Townsend and Aventura (per the back of the pack).Product is fine, it works, plugs in like a cartridge.

I purchased this product to use liquid ink opposed to plastic refill cartridges. I was a little skeptical, because i thought i would end up getting ink every where or the item would leak. But it is great, it is easy to fit and no issue refilling. i did not get covered in ink, and there was no leakage. i am even contemplating ordering another pen/ink colour to use, because i was so impressed.

24.10.2012

what more can I say- it fits a cross townsend. Why not 5*?PROS-it fits, ink doesnt leak, relatively cheap.Much cheaper with a bottle of ink and a converter or 2 than cartridges.CONS- could hold more ink- the barrel of the townsend is not the smallest, they could have squeezed at least 5mm more space for the ink in there(which, size wise would be about 50% improvement).

Although my item was slightly different in design to the picture in as much as the section that contains the ink is clear rather than green, it works really well without any mess and it easy to use. I would recommend this product to use with the Cross fountain pen range.

It does exactly what it says, it fits a Cross Townsend or Aventura fountain pen to allow the use of bulk ink instead of cartridges. I have been using these for many years and this one was bought for use in a new pen.

Still need to give this a longer trial run and leave the ink in it longer and see how it does, but it looks well made and my initial test writing with it seemed to work well.

a converter - for converting a Townsend pen from cartridges to bottled ink. Works a lot better than the threaded type (thanks John Lewis!)
