I'll admit I've been a fanboy of Crank Bros pedals since they first came out and have been using one variety or another of their classic "egg beater" minimalist pedals for a long time. This means I am already familiar and comfortable with their engagement mechanism and the float they provide (which I think are great).I've resisted platform pedals for a long time, even though so many of my friends have switched over - I just really like the feeling of being "snapped in" to my bike - it allows me to feel part of the bike and to throw the bike around much more naturally. However, on highly technical trails that require a lot of "dabbing" or climbs that require a standing start, clipless pedals are at their worst, and I find myself envying my friends with platforms. These pedals solve this dilemma for me.The only downsides of these pedals are the weight penalty and that you have a 50/50 chance of landing on the pedal you want each time you put your foot on. Regarding this latter point, I find that after a few hours of use it becomes pretty intuitive - the pedals are shaped such that you can tell by feel which side of the pedal you're on without having to look down at them.Overall, I really like these pedals for cross country riding! My setup: Orbea Occam H20 29 . Typical trails: technical, rocky southern and central California back country single track . Shoes: Shimano M087-----Update after a couple more long rides that included both long uphill sections on rocky terrain and technical singletrack: I've knocked one star off my original review because of one main issue - the platform side of these pedals is fairly slippery, especially if you are using hard soled (e.g. typical cycling shoes). There are no pins like you have in a traditional downhill platform, so when the going gets bumpy, your feet will slide around a bit if you're not clipped in. I still really like these pedals, but this is one weakness I felt compelled to share.

I've been riding mountain bikes for decades and have tried just about everything from super-minimal clip-ins to heavy-duty egg beaters and much in-between. There are many pros and cons to riding at either end of the spectrum, and a few things to be said for picking the middle ground with pedals such as these. However, these pedals do feel like "jack of all trades, master of none" and like a compromise no matter what style of riding you're doing. For technical, grinding rides, flats are superior in every way. Getting off the pedal to save yourself is just simpler and easier with a flat, and so is countering around corners. For enduro,clip-ins give the edge on maximizing your power generation and will keep you producing more watts for longer than a flat. In between, we have offerings like these hybrid pedals that offer a bit of the advantages of a flat paired with the advantages of a clip-in. Except their not ideal at either task, and unless you have a unique situation going, are always going to be outclassed by either a solid flat or a solid clip-in. My advice? Get the best flats you can, and the best clip-ins, and swap them out depending on what you're going to be riding. Is that a bit of a chore? Probably. But if you care about performance, use the right tool for the right job. It takes 10-minutes tops to switch out pedals, so just make it a pre-ride routine like filling a water bag or checking over your gear. It's worth it, and will make you a better rider overall than using hybrid pedals. That said, if you *must* go with hybrid pedals for whatever reason, you could do a lot worse than these Crank Brothers' Doubleshots. They're very well-made, clean, and clip in and out without too much fuss. Crank Brothers as a brand is excellent--I cracked a set of pedals from them a few months ago and they shipped me a replacement in 2-days flat. Real customer service from guys and gals who love the sport--what else can you ask for?

I'm really impressed with these hybrid pedals from Crank Brothers. They provide a nice, practical option to ride flat or clipped-in for city commutes or casual rides. They are solidly constructed with composite body material and metal spindle & spring. The platform is stable and sturdy. It is very easy to flip to the flat or clip-in side you want. There are non-adjustable pins on the flat side to provide extra grip on your regular shoes. The clip-in side works great too once you get used to it after some practices. Brass cleats and hardware are provided. The printed instruction manual is well written and comprehensive, which is hard to come by in this digital age when most instructions are provided online. It gives you clear, detailed instructions on how to install the pedals and cleats, as well as how to operate the cleats properly. You'll need a hex key to install the pedals but it is not provided. My only quibble with the pedals is that they are a little on the smaller side. The clip-in side is great but the flat side is a little too if you wear large shoes. The molded pins do provide the needed grip, which helps a lot. However, they are pretty sharp and tall, and may possibly make your shoe sole wear out faster.Overall, The Double Shot 1 pedals are an excellent choice for those of us who want the option to ride flat or clipped-in on the same bike. They work very well for what they are designed to do as an entry-level pedals. I would recommend them.

My hybrid bike had traditional metal pedals which were effective, but not near as effective as these new Crank brothers pedals. These pedals are made of high quality composite plastic like materials which makes them noticeably lighter. I did not think that it would make much difference but it did on a recent 30 mile ride. The pedals are longer front to back providing a better fit with your foot that allows greater transfer of energy into the pedals. This will be really noticeable for people using traditional pedals that are wider than they are long. So instead of pressure on the balls of your feed or in your arch step, you get a smooth pedaling experience.I did not use clips with my prior pedals so I cannot comment on the clip in or clip out yet.The clips are more 'mountain bike' style vs. cycle racing style. The one drawback using them without clips is in getting a good grip between the pedal surface and your shoe. My old pedals were metal and basically stuck into my shoes. There are some points on the non-clip pedal side, but I could see where they may get slippery in wetter weather. The pedals require a hex wrench as they do not have the indentations associated with a pedal wrench. This should not be a bid deal, but something to noteOverall a great upgrade from traditional pedals and people who ride more than a few miles a week.

I have been riding Shimano pedals for most of my riding time (10+ years), and especially enjoyed SPD on my cross bike. The pair of XT-M8020 has been on my cross for 4 years now and stills function like new. So I am a bit interested to try out this Crank Bros. I was hoping that the CB is significantly better, possibly convinces me enough to switch. To start, the CB comes with excellent instruction. That is a step above all others that mostly came with a little sheet of paper that tells you where to get a full manual online. Everything was detailed, from measuring mounting slots of your shoes to what force is need to install cleats and pedal. Also, how to clip in/out.This pair of pedals design for all types of riding: mountain bike, cyclocross and commuter. Large platform helps with power transfer and ease of clipping. For the day that you only need a ride around town, flat side allows regular shoes. I had a little trouble at first clipping in on my left, but it was fine after a couple minutes practicing.I believe Crank Brothers' pedals are much easier for beginners who want try clipping in versus Shimano SPD. As far as performance, you would get the same level on both. However, there are more versions to chose in the CB side. But for me, they work the same and not a lot of reasons for me to switch.

I've been using Crank Brothers eggbeater pedals for many years. I got these doubleshot pedals for my commuter bike. Really nice to have the option to use either flat shoes or cleated shoes on the same pedals. The pedals are big enough that the flat side is very stable and flipping to the side you want is easy. The cleated side is easy enough to click in and out. It feels a little different from the eggbeater pedals, but I got used to that quickly. I use the same shoes/cleats that I use with the eggbeater pedals with no problems. A new set of Crank Brothers cleats is included with the pedals for people that are new to Crank Brothers.I'm using the cheapest 1-series version of these pedals. The 2-series has more durable bearings, which frequent users will probably want. The 3-series has the improved bearings as well as adjustable studs on the flat side of the pedal. Use a small hex wrench to raise or lower the stud height. This is a nice feature if you want to fine tune studs' grip to your shoes (or lower them entirely so they don't chew up your shoes).

Made in Taiwan. I’ve been wanting to install a set of clipless on my hybrid bike and these were a great option. One side clipless and the other platform. The kit comes with the two pedals and the cleats and screws to mount on shoes. These are the two-screw SPD-type cleat mounting design. They weigh 331 grams per pair, and for what they are, feel pretty light. The pedals install with a 5 mm hex through the back of the crank arm and not with an open end wrench, which works fine. Aesthetically, they look very nice and represent quality construction. In operation, they work great. Shoes lock into the pedals smoothly and extraction equally as smooth. Flipping over to platform is a breeze for when my wife, who doesn’t do clipless, to use. Raised spikes on the platform side provides good grip. Definitely five stars

I have used these pedals quite a lot since receiving them. I use them on my commuter bike mostly. I have Shimano road pedals that I swap out for these when I'm commuting, or running to the store, or just don't want to bother with clipping in. So, needless to say, I haven't used the SPD capabilities with these. They are great pedals. They feel almost indestructible and spin nicely. The grip is good when using them with tennis shoes. At some point I'll clip in and use them like that as well. But for now, it's just nice knowing I have the option, even if I don't use it.I have used a lot of cheap pedals before and these really do make a difference to your overall ride quality and enjoyment.Highly recommended!

I have had clip-in only pedals forever on my primary bike. But increasingly I use my bike for a relatively short commute and having to put on special shoes just to ride to work (and needing to carry my regular shoes for the day) was a pain. These give me both options! I was surprised and pleased at out how well my trail runners grip the flat side of these pedals. I really don't feel like I am giving up as much efficiency as I might have expected.Even better, these come with the hardware to swap out your cleats on your existing bike shoes to fit these clips. It was an easy change and now I have both options - clips or clipless. That's awesome!

The double shot 1 pedals are ideal for commuting and casual riding. the body is composite. there is a two sided entry and diamond plate pads add traction. Brass cleats are included. It is a hybrid system, half flat and half clip in. Installtion is simple and although they felt different it wasn't long before I became accustomed to them. They look pretty sharp and perform well. I gather the 1 is the economy version. 2 and 3 offer more options including better parts and some adjustability. But for a casual rider nd/or urban commuter these are fine.

I actually learned to clip in using the Shimano double sided pedals and it worked great, but what I didn’t like about it is the platform is too small when wearing sneakers, it made riding very uncomfortable on my feet. These Crank Brothers Doubleshot pedals are great because the platform is much larger and the pressure on my feet is better distributed. Excellent pedals, happy to upgrade my pedals to these so I don’t have to wear my cycling shoes everytime I take a cruise on the 29er.

Loved putting these on my lighter bike that I use for long distance rides. I don't use clip in shoes + pedals right now but I wanted to opportunity to transition to them in the future. I had installed hybrid pedals on my former bike (RIP, stolen from the bike lockup) because the mechanic at the shop suggested it as a good solution for commuters like me who also like to ride a long ways. These are easy to install on the new bike and very light. Perfect for the city!

I run egg beaters on my mountain bike, but there are a couple of bikes that I'll ride clip-less but also want to ride around the neighborhood on, these pedals are great for that since you can do both. It does mean you still have a bit of pedal that can catch, but it's angled back fairly well. Platform is nice and big for riding without cleats (which are included in the package as well, should mount to any SPD shoes).

Excellent pedals for those just starting out on locked pedals, because while learning how to lock my shoes in and take them out while riding, I found myself needing to use the regular side a lot to catch myself. They were also very easy to install and compatible with both mine and my boyfriend's bike that I tried. The only down side that I can see is that there's no reflectors which would've been very helpful.

I got these to put on a Schwinn Volare 1300 Men's Drop Bar Road Bike, 700C Wheels, 18" Medium Frame Size, Blue, after one of the original pedal broke on the bike.I found these crank Brothers Doubleshot Hybrid Bike Pedals to be well made and a good value. They were easy to install and function very well.Great clip side.As others noted the break in period is a bit longer but worth it.
