I was lucky enough to have a tour of the Cotswolds Distillery earlier this year and if you should find yourself in south Warwickshire, near Shipston-on-Stour, then the distillery tour is an experience I can thoroughly recommend. The Cotswolds is a small distillery concentrating on quality rather than quantity and although still a relative newcomer they are producing a growing range of whisky and other spirits as well. As a fairly new distillery Cotswolds have yet to produce a whisky that has been matured for a long period of time but the current single malt is already an award-winner and their new Founder's Choice Single Malt Whisky is even more special. The founder of the distillery is American Daniel Szor, and this whisky is taken from his favourite casks and dedicated to the memory of Dr Jim Swan who was of great assistance with the barrelling process in the early days of the distillery. This is a cask-strength whisky at 60.4% alcohol-by-volume so is very much stronger than most of the common whisky in the UK at 40% and is very much for special occasions or as a very welcome gift. The flavour of whiskey is very much a personal thing but you can taste the love and care that has gone into this very special whisky which compliments it's high strength. Founder's Choice is made with odyssey barley grown locally on farms near the distillery, which is then malted at Warminster Maltings, and the distillery operates it's processes in an eco-friendly manner. There are tasting notes on the Amazon product page which may guide you, but whether you pick up the flavours mentioned or just enjoy it for what it is this is a very special English whisky that will please many whisky-lovers. Certainly not a cheap whisky at around sixty-five pounds for a 70cl bottle currently from Amazon, but a quality product beautifully presented that serves to enhance the reputation of the Cotswolds Distillery – five stars for the concept and the flavour.

I received this product free of charge in order that I could test it and write a detailed and honest review. Well we’ve enjoyed testing this....who wouldn’t if you like a good whiskey. In fairness it’s my husband who is the real whiskey lover and if you offer him a good malt he’s a very happy bunny. This one comes in a nice , well made blue box so would look good if you gave it as a gift. Firstly I had a good smell and the best way I can describe it is it smells of Christmas. Really fruity, especially plumbs but with a slightly smokey undertone. We tested just a couple of sips neat ( it’s 60% proof) and it certainly packs a punch however after the initial hit it’s smooth and very warming. You can definitely taste a fruitiness however the overriding flavour is more of barely and hay. Personally I couldn’t get the dark chocolate that the bottle details but maybe that’s just me. It’s actually really pleasant. My husband added about half again of water to his and said it was absolutely delicious. He also volunteered to keep testing this until it was gone...very generous of him! He would normally go for Chevas Regal or Glenmorange or any really nice Speyside. He said the flavour was very different to anything else he’s tried but he’d certainly have it again. I’m a bit more of a whimp when it comes to whiskey and this was a little too powerful for me but I really enjoyed this in a liqueur coffee....I can feel all you whiskey connoisseurs throwing your arms up in disgust! But....I think you just have to enjoy it how you like it. So I think if you like a good whiskey and your happy to try something a little different then I’d certainly recommend this. It would also make a really special gift for a whiskey lover.

This is the first English Whisky I have tried and I must say that it won’t be the last. I generally take whisky straight, but this needs a little water because at near 61% it can pack a bit of a parting punch on the palette. I was expecting it to burn, but it was pleasantly rounded and had a slight sweetness. For me I could pick out the butterscotch from the tasting notes and to a lesser extent the toast and cereal, but certainly something from the cask had passed nicely into the whisky. That being said, my usual whisky is peated malts so I need to adjust. The first few sips were very pleasant, but very quickly started to turn a little rough.I found that you either need to have a little time between drinks or much easier to take with a splash. Besides, I really don’t want to get too used to a neat drink with such a high alcohol content. The colour of the whisky is quite inviting, the nose is pleasant and reminded me of a caramel like sweet I used to have as a child. Again, I was expecting something harsh, but it wasn’t so. I am not too sure on the price tag for this. At (current price) £60 it isn’t outrageously expensive for a decent whisky, but this is the kind of price I would expect to see on a whisky that has been aged 10+ years. I am not saying it isn’t worth it, nor am I saying that aged whisky is automatically worth more, but the price tag did cause me to raise an eyebrow. I have certainly paid more than this for whisky where some were worth every penny, others not so much. This one I would be prepared to spend about £45-£50 on it, but I wouldn’t put someone off paying the full asking price as it really is a good whisky and well worth adding to the collection.

No reason why we cannot produce a good Single Malt Whisky in England because we have great barley, along with the expertise and weather conditions to carry out the malting. After all, when all is said and done, whisky is distilled ale and English ale is a fantastic product in its own right. I won't repeat the details of how the product is matured because you can read it above in the product description but note that there isn't much age on this whisky so potentially it could make an even more complex and flavoursome product if aged longer in the barrels. I suspect that it's too hot in England and a greater proportion would go to the 'angels'than if they were aged further north and that's why it's a "young" bottling. In the glass there is a good amount of colour from the charred red wine casks. On the nose there is sweet vanilla, caramel and a hint of Christmas pudding! This whisky is bottled at cask strength so I had a small sip and then added a drop of an English Spring water from the Cotswold area. As expected, it has a real punch neat but it is deliciously sweet almost like a fine American bourbon with a spoonful of English honey. I suspect that if they have used English Barley it will naturally be sweeter than barley grown in the cooler Scottish conditions. Adding a drop of water really brought out the spice, honey and liquorice flavours on the palate with a lingering finish. A whisky to be sipped and savoured for what it is. A uniquely English product with a complexity that can match much older Scottish Malt whiskys.

The Cotswold Distillery only opened in 2014, so this is a very young whisky, namely 3 years old, which is the minimum age to be legally described as a "single malt". This is a cask strength bottling at 60.9%, but even given the increased duty payable, 65 quid (at the time of writing this review) for a 3 year old whisky? It would have to be quite astonishing to warrant that price tag.It has a rich deep gold colour, achieved without adding caramel. Some cask strength whiskies are best drunk as is, but this is one of the many which greatly benefit in the drinking from having, quite literally (though it sounds very pseudy), just one small drop of water added and swirled around before sampling. This takes the edge off and makes it a more rounded drink. I'm mostly getting butterscotch, honey and a whiff of woody spice (not getting any of the fruit which the tasting notes describe on all of nose, palate & finish) and it's very warming on the palate. For a 3 year old whisky I would say that this is surprisingly rich and complex. But would I pay this amount for it? Definitely not. It's not *that* good that I would fork out this much for it and I would unhesitatingly go elsewhere (specifically Islay) if I were choosing a whisky in this price bracket. It will be interesting for sure to see how the output from this distillery develops over the years and it holds the potential for something very special. But given how much this 3 year old is, I shudder to think how much they'll want for a 10 year old even at 40%.

I like the simple, smart, presentation of this Founder's Choice label whisky from a distillery that's fairly local to us. The clear-sided bottle enables the tipple to be seen before it's poured. It's a lovely, pale-to-medium honey gold shade. This is a young single malt (no age statement, but the distillery itself was only founded in 2014), but really very good for such a youthful dram. The nose has fruits and caramel, although sniffed more than delicately and this becomes somewhat astringent. In the mouth, I found this initially lovely - soft and warming, sweet with toffee and red fruits, slightly buttery - but then the astringency of alcohol took over. At 60.4% proof, this has a significantly higher ABV than I'm used to, and I certainly noticed it if attempting anything more than the tiniest of sips. After a tastebud-tingling, mouth-numbing hit of alcohol, this leaves a lovely malted toffee aftertaste. My Dad did not have the same problem and has been thoroughly enjoying this. This is a pricey tipple, rather beyond my normal budget. Having had the opportunity to try it, I wouldn't buy it for myself: but would happily buy a bottle for Dad for e.g. Christmas or his birthday.

This is a strong yet surprisingly smooth tasting and drinkable malt whisky of exceptional quality.I don't know much about the distillery having never heard of it but for a young whisky and such a strong alcohol content it is surprisingly drinkable. I'm one of those heathens that likes a cube or two of ice with my whisky, swirling the glass round and watching the impressive legs run down the glass imagining I'm Don Draper giving it a good old sniff....the aroma is strong yet pleasing, smokey and warming, it'll be a lovely drop come the autumn/winter when I'm curled up in front of the wood burner on a cold evening.Presentation-wise it's excellent too,a nice traditional bulbous shaped bottle which comes in an attractive sturdy dark blue box - an excellent gift for a special occasion!

I'll preface this with the fact that I dont often drink Whiskey. When I do drink it I seem to have a random approach to what I like. Sometimes I like peaty whiskey, sometimes aged and sometimes a bourbon. And I can go years in between drinking it.So I was exceptionally pleased to have the opportunity to try this one that is from a distillery I hadn't heard from. Each to their own for flavour and I thoroughly enjoyed this. My preference was over ice however I am going to try a couple more ways.I enjoyed reading the other review with some of the history and back story so I am off to do some more research on the company.

This single malt is beautifully smooth. It's not particularly aged but in all honesty, that doesn't mean it's not as good as most aged malts. It's smooth and deep without being sweet or syrupy the way some brands get, which is more like a bourbon than a whisky. The packaging is beautifully simple and classic. Whilst amazon packaging was excessive and wasteful, the box itself is slimline and well presented if giving this as a gift or bringing it out for a special occasion. Which, on my budget, it would be as £64.99 per bottle is about £35/40 more than I'd pay for a bottle of alcohol for personal or family use. (max)

This has been a very hard bottle to rate, as it's clear the base spirit is good, but it's been swamped with flavour from the barrel. A bit like covering good steak in chilli sauce, I can tell there is a lot of detail to this whisky, but it's buried by too strong flavour from the finishing. My wife tried it and said 'that's hot' and I concur - it's great on the nose, prickles my cheeks, and there is always that enigmatic hint of something more.I think more confidence in the quality of the spirit, and less willingness to hide it behind imparted flavour would have been wise. It's good, but not as good as it should be.

At 60.4% ABV this cask strength single malt is not to be taken lightly. Sampled neat it has quite a kick, and for me (your tastes may differ) is better enjoyed with a large chunk of ice and given a few minutes to settle. Surprisingly even this slight dilution calms things down quite a bit and allows for a chance the enjoy the taste rather than just the power. in spite of being English there's a definite nod to Speyside malts, with definite rich autumn fruits and butterscotch flavours. It's a damn fine whisky and I look forward to future malts from Cotswolds.

A very superior Whisky. Refined, smooth and dangerously drinkable. Clean but lingering palette with hints of caramel, spice and a whisper of smoke. It's cask strength at 60.4, so it could be mistaken for a harsh, cheap drink if not opened up with a drop of water or some ice cubes. Refined and smooth once you get to know it. It's a real treat and there has been a great deal of thought and passion but into it. Recommended for the cognoscenti.

My son turned me on to this English distiller, and I’m so glad he did! I’ve had the original as a well as the Founders Choice, and love them both. I’ve chosen the Founders Choice cask strength again, mainly due to its incredible flavour, but also the fact that with a 60.5% alcohol content, it’s enough to kill a virus! Will definitely be ordering this again...and again. And have done so.

This is a very strong whiskey at 60%, myself and my family throughly enjoyed this bottle over the winter festivities. At this strength, I still have plenty left over and I think it will last a while. It is smooth tasting, warming and pleasant to drink, especially when paired with dark chocolate on the side. The bottle comes in a nice presentation box which makes it perfect for gifting.

Dislikes... the price! Even Ardbeg is £50!Likes.... the heavy fruitcake, toffee, and the oaky/warm leather flavours... this is all intensified by the cask strength.Must be sensible with money... must not buy 5 more immediately...
