The "game" gives you 245 recipes from around the world, talking you step by step through each one and responding to voice commands like "continue", "repeat" to save you dirtying the DS. There's a good variety of recipes from alot of countries- some classics and alot I've never heard of anyway. When you start up you can choose how to search for what you feel like by critera like keywords, calories, ingredients, time, country etc. I like to look around on the map myself and look at each country's offerings, but it's pretty easy to find something suitable.Using the DS instead of a book has the benefit of automatically adjusted quantities for more or less servings, some tutorial videos for things like how to chop onions and that searching by criteria means if you want something which takes less than 15 mins with no meat you can select that and see what options it gives you.I have actually only cooked one dish so far- it was definitely a success, but it did highlight a flaw with the voice recognition. It is far too sensitive to any noise, there could be just a bit of a background noise and he thinks you've said "go back" or something, it quickly got frustrating so I turned off that feature. To be honest I don't really like the idea of talking instructions to it anyway. If you're worried about getting your DS mucky with fingers while cooking, you could always just use a cotton bud or something instead of the proper touch pen. There are big boxes you can touch to go back, forward etc so it's very easy to use if you do decide to turn off the mic.The game expects you to measure out your ingredients in advance- as you are cooking it will just say "break the eggs into a bowl" or whatever, if you didn't get them out before you have to go back to the ingredient list and see how many you need. It's not a problem, but with a book it's all on the same page so I never do it that way (it only takes a second to click between the ingredients and continue the recipe though).Another criticism is that it only has measurements in metric. I'm more of an oz person so that will take a bit of getting used to.It includes guide of substitute ingredients for the Asian recipes. Unfortunately some of them I don't think I'd be able to find the ingredients for very easily. There is a huge variety of recipes, but they don't do much in the way of cakes, cookies etc.. they do desserts and there is a brownie recipe I look forward to trying.I'd say it's worth a buy at a reasonable price, but it won't be replacing the recipe book any time soon. It does give you a large variety of recipes to bring into your everyday repertoire as they don't look too hard, so good if you struggle to think of something new to cook. I think it will help me to branch out a bit in that sense :)

This guide is perfect for people who love trying different foods from around the world but is perhaps not suitable if you are not adventurous with your eating. The idea is that you choose a recipe and you can tick all the ingredients that you don't already have. These will be added to a shopping list. You can look up what all the ingredients are as well as different cooking techniques and utensils so this is good if you are totally clueless.Everything I have made has turned out well apart from the california rolls but that was because I was trying to be clever and raced ahead without waiting for the instructions! This is all proper home cooking without nasty additives. It is useful if you have to avoid certain ingredients as you can programme it to mark recipes with an X if they are unsuitable for you.I am writing from the point of view of a more advanced cook and I found it easy to use so I wanted to see if a beginner could use it. I let my husband cook one of the more challenging recipes and he made it really well, even though he is a novice who can't crack an egg. This is fun and the food is great, although I have a few complaints (hey Nintendo, if you are reading this take note!). The biggest complaint is that the preparation section doesn't explain how much of everything to use so you have to keep flicking back to the ingredient page. This is annoying if for example, parsley is used more than once in the same recipe. The preparation section also assumes that you have measured everything out in advance which is annoying as I would prefer it to start from scratch with every ingredient. I am not a tv chef who has a hundred little measuring bowls! My other complaint is that I would have liked more vegetarian main meal recipes; there are some but most are meat based. Some reviewers mentioned the voice recognition being bad-it really is but I just switch it to manual as I can't be bothered talking to it anyway. If you are a beginner this is very good, although you will need to buy the necessary utensils. If all you own is a saucepan and colander then you need to get shopping first otherwise you will be limited by your lack of equipment. Otherwise, this is a good guide to cook more interesting food than beans on toast. You feel a sense of achievement after making each thing and you get some applause too!I like this a lot despite a few minor niggles. I'm making curry tonight!

I saw this advertised and had to buy it, even if it was just to find out that it wasn't as good as I thought it would be... However having used it last night to make a very nice bolognese dish I can confirm that it does exactly what it says it does. There are recipes from around the world, and the recipes can be adjusted to cater for different numbers of portions, however this is only in multiples of 2 which when you have a family of 3 can mean either making too little or too much. The instructions on how to prepare the ingredients are great, the video clips are easy to follow and I recommend it to anyone who is starting out with cooking. The shopping list is fantastic for making sure you have all the ingredients and if you live in an area where you cannot purchase "foreign" ingredients there are a list of alternatives which can be used. The only downside is the voice activation. When I used it I discovered that the sound of chopping ingredients would make the program skip back a place, or even more frustratingly, make the chef repeat things he had already said. I think though that I will have to persevere with trial and error when it comes to the placement of the DS when I am cooking. There are also a lack of vegetarian dishes in the aid (I refuse to call this a game), in fact if you do a keyword search for vegetarian it brings up 3 dishes, 1 of which contains fish!!All in all a good buy if you like trying new dishes from around the world. I have a fair few cook books as I love cooking but have often dismayed at having to run back and forth to a book to follow a recipe. This takes away all that hassle.

Unlike the first reviewer - I actually have this 'Game' and its pretty good. There are 245 recipes from all over the world (only 10 from the uk though) and they range from soups to puddings. The 'game' will guide you through every aspect of the cooking process and even has a built in timer for cooking times. It really leads you by the hand and is really accurate with its ingrediants. You can cook a meal by a ingrediant type, the country of origin, by picture, by name and even by special requirements!.You can even enter in what you don't like (or allergic to) and the meal list will highlight any meals that contain that ingrediant with a cross. The 'game'has a voice which guides you step by step and you use your voice to go through the stages - so you can be by the cooker cooking and say 'continue' and the ds on the worktop will move to the next stage and tell you what to do.It has a ingrediant planner, utensils guide, helpful tips, terminology guide, substitute ingrediants guide, information and picture guide on all ingrediants used, calculator and shopping list so you can even take the ds shopping and work it out as you go. The possible meal options you can tweak are endless. You can't class this as a game - more of a guide. Some people are bound to say that for £25 you could buy a few cook books - but this is so user friendly and easy to use (it even has example videos, things like chopping onions or filleting fish) that it makes it a piece of cake to adapt recipes.

Cooking Guide has over 200 recipes so you might still not be able to decide what to eat. I'm a gamer who spends far too long gaming to do justice to this awesome virtual chef with his soothing voice and patience. Do not confuse it with Cooking Mama which is just a total wind up.This is like having a chef by your side and no f words in sight!I had some AUBERGINE I wanted to use up so I just typed the word in and this genius guide suggests 5 recipes. You can also search by country, food types like veg, meat, or cooking methods like simmer, fry, boil etc.It even tells you what tools you need. You can even look up substitute ingredients. It is good fun, even my little girl likes to listen to the chef and pretend she is making something. Also I love the way I can go backwards and forwards until I fully understand what the virtual chef is saying to me.It even explains the method of how to chop or dice an onion so even a novice should be OK with it.I just wish the chef could come to my home and get on with it so I could have more time to play games.I have recommended it to friends and family and I will be plouging my way through loads of meals as it really has many great classics on it.

I'm utterly rubish at cooking. I also cannot allow my mother to try and teach me how to cook because she is annoying when she does so. When I heard about this game I was incredibley pessimistic, it had the potentional to be awful like a lot of DS educational games but this isn't one of them. It's so easy to use, however the voice recognition is an issue though, often not working because of the background noise. Here's a handy hint, pop your DS in a little plastic bag to protect it and you can put your filthy mits on it as much as you want! I love the note taking capability and after cooking the dish I write the rough price of each dish so when I'm skint I can see what I can afford!I'm off to Spain for a month soon where I shall have to fend for myself and this will be a great tool to take with me when I'm stuck for ideas. I also think this would be a great idea for getting kids involved in cooking as it is an innovative, fun and clever tool whilst at the same time appealing to the adult market.

I bought this as soon as it came out. At first i thought that i wasn't going to be able to do this amazing recipes but at the end i decided to give it a try. I been doing the same recipes for some time now and the family was getting boring of having the same thing. This it was the solution. I'm from another country so cooking something different wasn't really a hard but convincing my husband was until i manage to do some of the recipes from the game. After a while even my husband says that i'm getting better in the kitchen. It gives a chance to do something different every day.It is just perfect for anyone that is terrible in the kitchen like me. I would buy it for sure if you want to learn how to cook different things. If you are expecting to find only english recipes this is not good for you but if you are looking for something different this is for you.Even my kids love it. My daughter loves to stay in the kitchen with me while i cook and she eats at the end.

I got this for Christmas from my Mum and Dad as I love cooking and I asked for it as I thought it would be a great fun using it.It is full of some great recipes, which you can search for by country, how easy, whats in it and keyword and it talks you through them all, but both me and my mum found it had great difficulty recognising our voices when we said "continue", it seemed to think we said anything but. We ended up speaking in really deep voices which our men found hillarious.Typically it understood them first time!Another problem I found was when using it in the kitchen it picked up every little noise. It told me to chop the onions and when the knife hit the chopping board it would say "sorry I didn't catch that" or worse continue to the next step.It wasn't like I had it right next to me either. So in my opinion I would recommend it for the recipes and search functionality, but its practical use in the kitchen is pretty useless!

Well, it's not exactly a game, but it is great. For those who find reading while using both hands to cook, it is absolutely brilliant. All the recipes are organised by country (so you could have an hungarian cooking night if you wanted to) and can be searched by ingredient if you have some odds and ends left over from another dish. The steps are very clear (probably more basic than an average cook needs) but this does mean that a novice cook knows exactly what to do. The noises can be a bit annoying sometimes, and the voice activation needs you to speak very clearly, but I would certainly recommend it as a good addition to any cook's recipe section. Absolutely brilliant for novices.

First of all, I really advice taking out a little extra insurance on your DS console, and having screen protectors. Unlike most games for the DS this is a little more hands on, and it is good to remember the clue is in the name - guide. The recipes are simple and easy to follow, and although the voice recognition is a little over sensitive at times, its not difficult to back the steps up or skip a few to get back to the right point. Nintendo are really learning to push the DS as far as it can go, and with this guide, you can see its working.Oh, by the way, the Tarte au Sucre and the chinese pork are particularly tasty...

8.7.2008

This is a really fun gadget to have if your really into your cooking AND playing on the DS.Annoying thing about it is that the mic is MEGA sensitive, so while you are preparing your recipe, every sound might trigger the mascot chef guy to say, "pardon?", "sorry?" and sometimes he might recognise it as "continue" or "Repeat" and the steps will get a bit messed up.....PLUS I wish that their were more recipes ... or at least an upgrade for more ... oh well, cant have everything! All in all ... a defo buy if you like a bit of somthing different in your cooking --- i recommend the chinese beef stir fry ITS AWSOME!!!

Perfect for amature or pro cooking, tells you what you need to buy, for products your not sure about it gives a detailed explanation. Makes a shopping list for you so you just tick the items off when you have them. Makes cooking so easy and fun and the meals available on there are brilliant and yummy. The only bad thing about this game is im not sure if you can update the list of recipies available but i have cooked the same things many times just changing them slightly to suit my tastes at the times. A+ All round!

I'm a Uni student and my housemates bought me this as part of my birthday present and i love it. Its easy to use with its step by step dictation so you have to read while cooking, has 250 recipes from around the world (5 you have to unlock, google it to find out how to unlock them) which is great if you like trying new things and offers great ways to filter the recipes like by country, ingredient, time, difficulty, calories ect. i love looking at the recipes and choosing what i'm going to eat

21.12.2008

I have to say that I was quite pleased with the "game." I like how it takes you step through step of each thing that you need to do, and it can easily by adjusted for 2 - 4 people.I am dissapointed with the voice recognition. It picks up every possible sound that there is and the game gets all confused, and when you do say "continue" it just ignores you. So that is an issue, it would be better if there was some kind of pause button or to turn of the voice recognision.

20.2.2009

easy to use. Alot of ways to choose something to make eg. by ingredients, by country of origin or length of time to prep and cook. Step by step instructions and you tell the chef when to continue to the next step. Ingredients for most receipes are not what i would keep generally in my cupboard but a quick shopping trip sorts that. Definately good if you are stuck in rut of cooking the sames meals and need something new.
