For a photo guide as to how to erect this tent, please see the end of this review--------------------------------------There are two sizes of this tent – Large & Extra Large. Mine is the Large. This is an excellent beach shelter. It differs from the average beach shelter in that:1. It is much larger (photo 1).2. The groundsheet that extends out the front of the tent zips up, closing the tent (photos 2-3). This is a superb feature.3. It has two guy ropes, which is handy if there is any wind.My (very young) daughter uses the zipping up feature to use the tent as a changing tent.I sat just off the groundsheet in the sun, with my daughter two feet away from me and fully in the shade. That is one of the things that makes it great to have. The first time I erected it, it took me far too long. Having done it once, I am far faster. I suggest that you erect it at home the first time. The instructions are sewn into the drawstring bag (photos 5-6) but are not particularly helpful. One problem with all pop-up tents is that they can take off in windy conditions. This can happen when your child climbs out of the tent – with no weight left inside the tent, you can find yourself running down the beach chasing your tent, shouting “Fenton! Fenton!” (if you don’t understand that, Google “Fenton the dog”). To reduce the risk of this, this tent has a pockets in the side which you can put sand etc. into (you can see two of them in photo 6).There are three poles, with the sections of each pole held together with elastic (photo 7). One pole goes left-right and two shorter ones go front-back – you can see all three poles in photo 2. At the base, the poles slot into brass rings (photo 8) – this means that you can erect the tent on a hard surface. Metal ground stakes are provided, or you can use the pockets. There are also two guy ropes (visible in photos 1-3).Many beach tents do not have guy ropes so people do not expect them and can trip over them – especially as the guy ropes on here are green, against a green background if using on grass. I draped a few items of clothing over them to try to prevent this. Obviously you only need to use the guy ropes if there is any wind but I have erected it in calm conditions only for it to get windy later.TIP: Some tents are a pain in the neck to fit back into their bag. This one fits back in fine, providing you know how. You need to do two things:• Before folding the tent up, place the bag next to the tent. Fold the tent so that it is just shorter than the bag (photo 9).• Place the bag containing the poles on top of the tent and roll the tent around it (photo 10 shows me about to do this). This both causes the tent to be rolled tightly, and gets around the problem of trying to squeeze the poles into the bag after you’ve put the tent in which can be almost impossible (and risks damaging the tent). The only thing left to put in the bag is the pegs, which I put in last. They fit in fine as they are small. The pegs are in their own thick bag (which should prevent them damaging the tent). The final photo shows the carry bag with the tent, poles & pegs inside. It is light and easy to carry.A great shelter.A newer version of this tent is now available: Coleman Sundome FastPitch Beach Shelter - Blue. But this older one is excellent, half the price (at the time of writing) and almost half the weight (1.9kg instead of 3.6kg). I don’t know about you but I am always trying to save weight on flights, and 1.7kg is a large difference. I must say that this 1.9 kg tent, slung over my shoulder in its carry bag, does not feel heavy. On the other hand, if weight is no issue then you may find the ease of erecting the newer tent makes it the one for you.------------------------HOW TO ERECT THIS TENTSee photo A1 (added at the end of my photos, with the red flash). It is easiest to start by erecting the two short poles, which run left-right in that photo (where the dark green fabric meets the light green, or - if you have the blue version - where the dark blue fabric meets the white fabric).Find the two short poles. They have a rubber cap at one end.Find the part of the tent with the reinforced black webbing as shown in photos A2-A3. The black channelling that you need to insert the poles into is the channelling that runs along where the dark green fabric meets the light green (or dark blue meets white, for the blue tent). Thread the pole through the channelling the correct way round - the rubber cap on the pole must meet the reinforced black webbing as in photos A2-A3.Pinch the reinforced black webbing to open up the pocket. Insert the rubber end of the pole into the pocket (photo A3). Put the opposite end of the pole into the brass ring (photo A4).It is now easy to see where the long pole goes – through the only remaining black channelling. Photo A5 shows the long pole inserted (with the short poles removed). When this pole passes the two short poles (which you have already inserted into the tent), make sure it goes OVER the short poles (if you put it underneath, it won't work - it will push up on the short poles).Anchor using the tent pegs through the loop in the black webbing (photo A6) or place rocks/sand in the pockets.--------------------------------------If you find this review useful, that's great as it has attracted an abnormal number of votes down compared to other reviews. If you think my review is unhelpful, I would be grateful if you would let me know why in the Comments below so I can learn from my mistakes. Thank you.

Used this for the first time today on a very hot beach under blue skies. It took me precisely 4 mins 30 secs to erect on my own and I am sure that will become much less with practice. Tent is well made and the material and poles both seem to be standard tent material and not the cheaper alternatives you sometimes get.The design is very good in that you get maximum shade from the sun, but it does not obscure the view to the left or right. The shade made the beach experience much more enjoyable - other people on the beach were wilting under the heat. It's great to have somewhere shady to keep food cool and belongings out of sight. The facility to zip up the groundsheet to enclose the tent is very useful. It means you can leave your belongings while you go swimming (provided you keep the tent within your sights) and it is just about big enough to change in, but you will have to be quick because with the front zipped up it gets very hot very quickly. It is a pity there is no ventilation but I suppose that would have put up the costs. Some reviewers have said it is difficult to put away in the carrying bag but we had no difficulty - you just have to remember the right way it was folded, so make a note of this when you erect it for the first time. At 1.6 kg it can be carried on the shoulder in it's carry bag or strapped to a rucksack and you would hardly notice it was there. There is enough room inside for two people with all their gear and room between them to lay out a meal. At a pinch you could get three adults or two adults and two children under cover, but it would be very cosy.I am not sure how it will stand up on a windy day, but that will apply to any beach tent with an open front. Normally, if it is too windy for the tent I expect it is not likely to be a hot day, so the tent would not be needed anyway. It comes with tent pegs which are pretty useless on a beach. There are sand pockets at the corners which can be filled with sand or rocks to weight the tent down if needed, but normally this will not be necessary if you have your gear stored inside. The tent was just about strong enough to have a soaking wet-suit draped over it to dry in the sun.My wife was skeptical about getting a beach tent but she has been converted and I am very pleased with it. I would recommend it.

This has been one of the best summer purchases we have made. We (hubby and I) have a toddler and a baby and when we arranged to go camping recently I knew we would need somewhere for when we went out and about and down the to the local beach for them to sit safely in the shade without the risk of burning. There are several UV tents/beach shelters advertised and I took the time to research them before settling on this one.The only thing that could make this shelter any better than it is is if it had an instant pop up function to it rather than having to mess around with the poles but even when taking into account the extra five minutes it takes to set up compared to other families I saw just 'popping'their tents/shelters up this wins against the others hands down. Why does it win? It wins because all of the pop up tents may flip up in a millisecond and fold easily but they are all tiny in comparison to this shelter which fitted our family of four in it very easily with ample room to spare. Even when at a garden party in the summer we had another two babies in there and another three adults sitting at the edges too to get in the shade and it comfortably accommodated all of us. When we went camping we used this tent as a changing tent for nappy changing as it meant our little ones were in the shade but also out of the main tent and also any smells were then not in the main tent too plus there was a lot more room to maneuver in the shelter than there was left in our tent. The tent/shelter has an extra sitting area that comes out from the main enclosed sort of part and this can be folded and zipped up to close the shelter over when not in use which we also found handy to put our stuff in when we were going off down the beach away from our stuff and it was then out of sight of any potential thieves. The shelter is very light and very easy to carry in it's carry bag and despite it being a bit more of an effort to put up than pop up versions it actually is very simple and once you have set it up a few times it is also very easy.If you are looking for a UV tent for you and your little ones then this is the one to get as it fits the whole family along with the mountain of stuff you have to take with you when you go out and I would say that this has been a super investment for us.

Bought this shelter purely for use on the beach. I had seen a couple of these on the beaches and liked the style and like the fact that it was branded. I've had a few no-name shelters for around the £15 mark, they had no real quality, weren't waterproof and never lasted. When my order came I immediately took it in the garden to build it up. First impressions were good, very easy to build up. The poles are a bit thin but feel quality as the inner walls are thick. You get a bag of pegs for use on grass. The groundsheet is nice and thick and the shell material seems good quality. I checked all the seems and the zip, all very good. Then a 5 minute hosing assured me of the waterproofing,it is at the very least short heavy shower proof.A feature I had been looking for in a shelter was the sand pockets, as I use these just for the beach you cannot use ground pegs. I tested them out on the beach and they provide decent grounding in a light to moderate breeze. Plus you have some guy ropes for more stability which is a nice touch as you don't often see them on little shelters. The size of the shelter is just right. You can get changed in it, fit 3 adults in (just) and zip up if it rains and it's nice and light to carry. The shade created by the shelter is nice and cool, not many rays make it through, giving confidence in putting children in it to keep them out of the sun.The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because of the all too common problem with tents of all makes, the carry bag is tiny. I'm a big strong guy and as hard as I tried I couldn't wrap the tent tight enough to easily for it back in the back. It takes 2 minutes to build up and at least 10 to pack it away. It does eventually go in but it is stressing the seams on the bag, I can't see it lasting too long. Maybe it's me not using the right technique but it seems an all too common problem with all tents, not just Coleman.Overall I am very satisfied with the shelter itself and can see me getting many happy years out of it, even if the bag doesn't last.

I, characteristically, spent a lot of time researching various UV tents for use on the beach (primarily). I looked at pop-up tents and read a ton of reviews for various makes and models.I settled on the Coleman Sundome because it had good reviews and was made by a 'proper' manufacturer. Also, it seemed pretty easy to set up with only 3 poles. I also liked the sand pockets for extra ballast. My choice was quickly vindicated as we took it to France last year. It was at times rather windy, and VERY sunny, and the tent was an absolute blessing. Our kids loved it and it was quick and easy to put up and take down, and most importantly it was easily transportable - important when you carry a lot of stuff to and from the beach when you have kids. The sundome easily handled the windy conditions, although I have read that the previous model had a vent you could open to let the wind through, I'm surprised that's been removed in this newer version, but even so it stood up well to the test. We've since used this tent again this year when down in Cornwall and it was a no-brainer to take it with us, based on previously experience. We stayed with my in-laws who have been so impressed with it that they want to get one.As others have stated, it's great for kids to nap in, and easily fits 4 (though two of us are under 5) and it is very useful to be able to zip it up to stash away things when you head into the water. Also, the ground sheet is very durable and thick so even on wet sand you don't have any dampness seeping through.I'd heartily recommend this to anyone looking for a beach tent/shelter.

This is the fourth one of these beach shelters that I've owned and it is far and away the best of all of them. It's a quality product and stands out from all the cheap imitations scattered around the beach. With holiday weather not always being predictable, we've previously found ourselves caught in a sudden rain shower. The beach cleared of people within minutes but we sat it out for half an hour in complete shelter and had the beach to ourselves as soon as the sun returned.Weighing in at 1.6 kilos, I'm happy to sacrifice something else from my luggage allowance in order to take this on holiday abroad. This is ideal to pitch a shelter for the family on a hot beach and to have somewhere safe to leave all your personal items whilst you're busy in the water or taking a snooze! You'd be hard pressed to find a better shelter than this. I think it's absolutely worth the extra cash and can't wait for the sun to return...August 2012 update after a fortnight in Fuerteventura:If you've been there, it's a windy island... Few people were brave enough to pitch a beach shelter and paid the 9 euros a day for the beds and parasols.I pitched the sundome though and weighted it down with sand in the 4 pockets. I then buried the pockets into holes and kicked loose sand to seal the base all around. This little beauty sat there all day and wasn't bothered by the (sometimes quite fierce) breezes. It sheltered my book from blowing around and it was also good to be able to get out of the sun when it hit 34 degrees. Great shelter and it's now paid for itself so the next use will be a freebie!

Great value for money (at about half the RRP though the price does fluctuate) and feels decent quality.Took some force on first erection to get the 2 front to back poles in place, making me fearful of ripping the small sleeves that the top end of the poles fit in. However things loosened up and subsequent erections were easier.Erection takes a couple of minutes especially with a couple of people. The usual tent issues of the pole joints snagging on the sleeves are there so it helps to have one feeding the pole and another pulling.Similar pole issues when dismantling. When breezy I found it easier to stuff it in a bag and fold it properly at home.Feels sturdy but haven't used it in very strong winds.I didn't use pegs in light to moderate winds when stones/rocks/sand were available for the pockets. The durable groundsheet extending at the front is a fantastic idea. Great for stretching out - you can have 3 towels side by side no problem. Ability to zip this up to the fly for privacy changing or simply hiding belongings is great, though the depth of the vestibule was enough for me to change discretely on the beach unnoticed with the front open.Product description says 1.8kg, the storage pouch has (from what I remember) 1.6kg or so printed on it. In reality it is close to 1.8kg but the plentiful pegs are relatively heavy and probably amount to 200g or so. I removed most to save weight flying on hols. Finally, one reviewer complained of no instructions. These are on a flap sewn into the storage sack but you probably won't need them.

We wanted a beach shelter which would stand up to the strong winds we often encounter on the beaches of Kos. This one seems to fit the bill very well although it has not yet been tried out on the beach.A trial setting up went well and it was quite easy to discover how to do it even though we have never owned a similar shelter. It seems nice and sturdy and the collapsible poles seem easy enough to manipulate. The relatively light weight means it should not incur luggage weight penalties. We shall no longer have to buy brollies and mats on our beach holidays as this shelter provides everything we want. It seems roomy enough for both of us - and we are fairly large adults! After our recent holiday in Kos I can confirm that this beach shelter is an excellent product.A bit fiddly to put up initially we soon got used to the method and quickly increased our speed doing this. Similarly dismantling became easier as we gained practice. An unexpected feature was the four pockets which could be filled with sand or rocks to weight the shelter - useful if very windy. We also discovered that if the wind changed direction moving the shelter around was simple. We were caught in a one hour long thunderstorm with heavy rain and hail. We zipped up the groundsheet to form an enclosed tent and sat it out. It proved not completely waterproof in these very testing conditions, but at least we were sheltered from the worst of the weather.Highly recommended.

Bought this for our holiday in Cornwall. Our daughter is 8 months, and I needed something to protect her from the sun on the beach. The description said it provided UV Guard, but having contacted Coleman, this was confirmed to be SFP50, so I went ahead and bought it. It was excellent. We had a couple of practices putting it up at home, which I would definitely recommend, as I wouldn't like to learn how to do it whilst fighting the wind on the beach! All it has is 3 poles, a long one across the top and two short ones running front to back. There are pockets for sand or stones to weight it down, which we did use. It also has ground pegs presumably for use on grass,so we haven't used them yet.It was plenty big enough for four of us (two adults, a 5 yr old and 8 month old) to fit inside. The base of it remains cool, even in the sun. We would not have spent the time on the beach that we did if we hadn't had this, as I would have been worried about our daughter being exposed to the sun, but she was quite happy in the shade, and didn't catch the sun at all. It's a bit of a challenge rolling it up small enough to get it properly back in the carrying bag, which has the instructions sewn into the top so you don't lose them, brilliant! We saw a couple of these in shops we visited whilst away, both were being sold at £35, so Amazon win on price.Overall, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this! I'm delighted with it.

We have recently returned from a week in sunny (but windy) Fuerteventura where we used this tent every day on the beach. We purchased this tent after reading the positive reviews as we had previously managed to destroy two other makes of beach shelter after only a week or twos use and we hoped this make might last longer. So far, so good. This shelter was excellent - lightweight-ish and compact (so easy to pack), easy to put up and put away (once you get used to how these tents go up and down), a really good size (easily fits two people and their associated beach paraphernalia), a really good sized groundsheet which can be zipped up to secure the tent and,it seems much better quality than tents we've had in the past. There are a couple of minor niggles which I will mention which could improve the shelter but are not a deal breaker - The sand pockets are not big enough however, if you put bags in the shelter this holds it adequately enough. There is no ventilation window which would have been nice on a couple of the hotter days to allow a flow of air and I imagine if you were taking this to somewhere where the temperatures were quite high, this would have been a real problem.Overall though, we were really pleased with the performance of this beach shelter and as regular visitors to Fuerteventura we are expecting this to last us a good few trips.

This has had a couple of trips to the beach. We decided to carry the extra weight of this (as opposed to normally carrying no screens or stuff like that) because we were going to a windy beach and the kids have been getting wet in rock pools and often cold.Setup needs "Tent" mentallity and does need a bit of "camp setup" but when up, and pointing in the right direction it provides a great wind break and also inherantly a place to get warm from the wind.(windy beaches will require you to ensure that you fill the extra pockets with sand, and in our case, around the bottom edge, for extra down weight to counter the strong winds.....Changing was good and it also helped a couple of the older ones to nap after lunch. It also provided good shelter from comparatively brief, light to medium showers.Overall for certain beach trips, we will definitely be using this again. Delighted with it.One thing to bear in mind, is at the end of the day, packing up was harder. A windy beach made it even harder, so we used remaining space in a ruck sack to "semi - pack" it up, so we could leave the beach. It got properly packed up the next day at our campsite, when we had a spare moment, as beach packing in the wind was impossible into the tight carrying bag.

Just back from the South of France and I am very pleased with my beach tent. It's small and light enough when packed to fit in your suitcase and the shoulder strap on the bag means it's no hassle to carry to the beach. When you are there the sand pockets work perfectly at holding it down - pegs won't work well in sand. Having filled those pockets you can get started on the poles. Put the two shorter poles in first, the metal end goes at the bottom and clips into an eyelet. Then put in the longer pole. Make sure it goes OVER the shorter poles. The pole joints can occasionally snag on the sleeve hems but it's not a massive problem.I also like the fact that you can zip up the groundsheet for changing,or if you all want to get in the sea and need to leave your tent.A potential improvement would be to have longer guy ropes, with a clip so that you can attach them at other points of the tent if the wind is coming from a particular direction. e.g. the tent is aligned to give shade and the wind is blowing across the tent you'd want both guys on one side. Also, sturdier pegs might be nice, but this is just nitpicking.A mate of mine bought one as well and we both agreed they are great!

Call me a bargain hunter but I will scour every inch of the web and check every price and review before buying and this tent gets 6 out 5. The quality of the tent was the first thing that struck me when I opened the package, it bristled with strong fabric and the ground sheet was strong durable damp proof material. This tent is really a proper tent material. Next the ease of putting the three bars together and the attached instructions permanently part of the inside of the bag so you can never lose them, had me put the tent up first time in 4 mins, and after that I flew up in a minute or two once I knew how it went up.The inside comfortably will fit two adults and two kids for a spot of picnic and plenty room also for us to put the kids buggy in when she needed to sleep. The zip up front just gives us all that extra privacy that you might just need when you are leaving it alone or changing. Taking it down was instantly fast, and it packs away into a neat two foot long tubular bag that slings over your shoulder and more importantly why I bought it, fit in a suitcase when travelling by plane to a holiday destination. Trust me, this is a superb value for money and effective UV tent.

Unpacked and looked for instructions, could not find plenty of other info tickets but no erection instructions so had to do the trial and error method with out much success, then noticed a slight shadow inside the outer carry bag and this is where the instructions are hid, they are sewn into the inside of the carry bag !!! Very basic but at least you can see where each pole goes.Erection quite easy but found poles difficult to insert if doing on your own as you need to guide poles and push from the base at same time , if you pull the poles the just come apart, however with 2 people one pushing and the other guiding it very easy. Once you know how it all fits its quite simple, but would definitely recommend you do a dry run at home first. Not actually tried on beach but feel you may need to add a couple of guy ropes , 2 are supplied but there are eyes for 4, also has sand pockets to anchor , quality seems good and price £14 (Sept 17 ) is a bargain when you look at similar products at this price, these are normally about £30.Packs up quite small and would fit a medium suitcase but personally I would only use in England because these become too hot abroad as there is no air flow .

I ordered this after mixed reviews to use on the beach with my kids. If you look at the tents marketed for babies etc they are more expensive than this one and so I braved it and ordered this. Well, when I was on the beach I took real note of those other ones compared to this. Firstly this ine has a zip up door which acts as a ground sheet, so all the people around you are frantically shaking out towels to lie in front of their shelters and yours has a nice area at the front already. Secondly, the kids ones can really only accomodate the kids, families around us had their kids in the shelter whilst they sat outside of it. Our family of four sat comfortably inside. The zip up door was fantastic, many times we tool our beach stuff out just in case and had some adhoc trips to the beach. The zip up door meant i could change inside the tent in complete privacy(its a squeeze mind you!) there were times when we had our buggy, beach towels, kids buckets etc all with us but wanted to nip to the beach front cafe. We wheeled the buggy inside the tent, zipped it up and watched our stuff from the cafe. Filling the sandbags stopped it from blowing away. Far better than a toddler sized shelter!
