So a brand new Nintendo IP lands on the 3Ds platform. And it's a really intresting IP. The gameplay works like a combination of Fire Emblem and Valkyria Chronicles with the blend of turn based strategy and 3rd person action. While it looks quite cartoony make no mistakes, this game is suprisingly hard - you really have to plan your moves very carefully or the enemy will curb-stomp you. The trick is to try and explore the map without either alerting enemies to your presence or spreading your forces too far apart. Get it wrong, and you can easily end up in a corner surrounded by enemies with no chance of escape. It's very tactical and presents quite the challenge even to more experianced stragey fans as even minor decisions can lead to either a big advantage or end with you being anhiliated. The story and character's are another big strength of the game. It has one of the most diverse cast of characters I've seen in any videogame in quite a while (including real life and fictitious characters), and the story is packed full of humour. The steampunk asthetic is used, but it's a much more colourful implementation of steampunk rather than the greying Victorian asthetic more typically used. I love the asthetic and it looks really good. The game has added the option to speed up the enemy turn, which does help as the enemy turn can take a long time, especially in later levels with more enemies. But some turns can still take a minute or more. In addition there's no overhead view of the map, so planning your route can be a little tricky and has left to losses for me where I've bundled into enemy traps I can't see, which can be frustrating. But I have no other real complaints. I haven't tried multi-player, as I don't tend to do online gaming, so I can't say for sure how well that works. But the single player game is great. This is a great new IP and it's good to see something from Nintendo that's not just another franchise addition. I really recommend this for anyone who has a 3DS, especially if your after a more challenging experiance from your games. It's also I really recommend this for anyone who has a 3DS it's a really great game. Nice to see some new IP from Nintendo, and I hope it does well.

Okay, so I didn't get it from Amazon, I was flying back from Melbourne and just looking for a cheap 3DS game for the flight as Australia has the same region, and this game was in the bargain bin (around £7.50) and the box looked interesting, it was a great choice!I've looked up a few professional reviews and they seem mixed... but honestly I don't get why, the graphics are good (for a 3ds), the 3D is actually worth turning on, and the gameplay is great.Of course the real caveat is that this is a turn based first person shooter, so really you have to like that sort of thing. Basically you have 12ish steam units per player per round and you can use them to move up to 12 tiles, shoot your weapon (uses 2-4 units per shot) and can save them for the oppositions turn to use to defend (DO THIS). Similarly your opponent has the same restrictions and you have to battle it out to get through a stage.Where it truly shines is the style! Nintendo fans, we love Mario and Zelda and co, but it sometimes feels like it'd be nice to play something that isn't part of a dynasty, and this game is a rare gem. The steam punk idea is fun, the graphics are great, and it just feels fun and fresh. The AI is actually pretty well done. I see the game is from the people who do Fire Emblem, so that makes sense, but it is fun - sometimes they'll surprise you, and it's no a case of by level 2 you can totally predict what they'll do. A couple of times they employ the "unlimited enemy mobs" thing that I really dislike, but I suppose that's a personal preference. One thing that really works is the first person perspective. You can't always see where all the enemy are and you don't have a total "god mode", really adding to the immersive feel of the levels. The levels are a good length for a mobile game, and have save points in the probably 20 minute stages, so it's good for whipping out and playing.Over all I highly recommend it, no idea why it's so cheap, but take advantage of it!

It's always good to see Nintendo come up with new characters and game concepts - and it's a shame when those games never sell as well as Mario and the like. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. was developed by Intelligent Systems, who make the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars games. If you're already a fan of those games, you'll find lots to enjoy here. It's an odd duck of a game. The art style is reminiscent of comic strips, and the characters are ripped straight out of American literature, in a League of Extraordinary Gentlemen kind of way. The main problem might be how the difficulty is balanced. It's easy for players to pick up, as there's not much micromanagement between battles. However,it's easy to run into trouble during the levels and be overwhelmed by enemies. Still, when you obtain more fighters and weaponry, the game encourages you to replay old levels, which gains you more medals to unlock further weapons. Since the levels are generally well-designed with many secrets to uncover, this isn't much of a chore. There's a multiplayer mode too (which I haven't been able to try yet) and Streetpass capability (ditto) where you can earn more medals to help with the difficulty. It's a great little game, one I wish more people would talk about. Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. should be a cult classic.

This is an awesome turn-based-steampunk themed-combat game. Your team of 4 (characters are varied as are a range of weapons) enter each mission/level at different locations to fight the alien invaders. Each mission/level is varied and calls for different approaches to win the fight.Made by the excellent people from Intelligent systems (Paper Mario, Fire emblem and Advance wars). It is great to see a new game and hopefully a new franchise! Starts off easy enough to break you in and familiarize you with the turn based combat, but soon steps up the challenge, and each level brings new characters with new abilities. An original designed game. Only one or two of the characters are grating, but most are very likable with unique weapons that are great to try out in the next fight. This game provided a great challenge and was addictive all the way through. Gave me around 35 hours of play, and is very repayable too. Would highly recommend as a top quality, addictive, original game!

If you have spent (too) much time with Fire Emblem or you are just looking for something a bit more "lite" then this little gem will keep you for a dozen hours. You get an interesting steampunk setting with an Over The Shoulder 3rd person camera and controls but squad turn-based action, a bit like the modern xcom games but the camera much closer and direct control of the character instead of the traditional command interface. For the purpose of this game and challenge it works! The game doesn't take itself too seriously and that's perfect for what it is.If you find it in any kind of medium-low single digit price get it without a second thought.Obviously dont expect Fire emblem or bravely default production quality.I would wait until my child is 10 before letting them play, but no need to wait until they are 12 years old. Its just PEGI ratings going from 7+ straight to 12+

I do not play a lot of strategy games but decided to give this a go due to the low price. There is a sufficient tutorial for anyone not familiar with turn based strategy titles so you do not feel thrown into the deep end too soon but as you progress it does get more challenging. The graphical style looks really nice and the music is also pretty decent. One of the original problems people had with this game was the long wait while the enemy team took their turn but this has become a non-issue due to an update which allows you to speed this up!Overall, I'd recommend this game to anyone, especially if you can still get it cheap.

This is a very different game to what we've come to expect from Nintendo, apart from the obvious likes of Fire Emblem and Advanced Wars, and even so this game has very different mechanics. It's turn based strategy but in 3rd person. I haven't played much of it yet, but from what I've seen it's been pretty enjoyable. Intelligent Systems are fast becoming one of my favourite developers hopefully they can continue to churn out games like this and keep this solid IP going, and the aforementioned games ( really looking forward to FE:Fates).

Metacritic and and others are giving this mixed to positive reviews and I cannot work out why. If you love turn based strategy games with elements of real time then you will lap up this game like a cat does whipped cream. Think Xcom meets Jeanne D'Arc, has a chat with Fire Emblem who drops in on for tea with XIII to discuss graphics and life... I could go on. Best played on the New 3ds XL as the C stick support is both useful and pleasing. You will be muttering 'Musta heard me, clankin' around' for weeks. Rivetingly refreshing

If you like turn based strategy that's a challenge and really makes you think against an AI who will beat you if you don't think wisely, you will love this game.Reviews were mixed when this was released, that was because enemy turn times took so long to complete and frustrated many reviewers. It's been patched now though and before you play this game it will ask you to download it. Since the patch some reviewers updated their score and gave it a positive. Excellent game.

Such a fun new IP by Nintendo. Great comic book visuals that look amazing in 3D, interesting storyline and characters. My only complaint is the gameplay. Whilst it is a very addictive game, even with the update released to speed it up it takes too long for the enemy's turn to finish - and majority of the time you're doing nothing whilst you wait for the enemy to make their move, unless you have enough steam for an 'overwatch' attack.

Got it for £5 on a lightning deal.I was actually impressed by the game, originally I thought nothing of it since I knew nothing of it.. but after playing it I could not put it down! It's a cool turn based game but trying to explain it won't do it justice.. so all I can do is recommend it for everyone to try for themselves.American's will love it because of all the references of their country and history.

I'm relatively new 3DS owner and I never heard about this game. When I saw gameplay and cheap price I immediately bought this game. Played the game for 5 hours and I really like it. Good graphics,Gameplay is like Valkyria Chronicles with X-Com. It's turn based and you play in 3rd person view. Story is goofy, but not bad at all. It's must buy for every strategy, rpg fan especially for this price.

10.8.2015

Very decent turn based strategy, bizarre story line and characters. This turn based strategy is played without overview map which takes a bit of getting used to but the mechanics work well. Whilst a very good game, does not have that same addictiveness as Fire Emblem or Advanced Wars games.Have not had a chance to play the online multiplayer.

For me this game delivers on all fronts, exciting strategic gameplay, great art direction & character designs, cool Saturday morning cartoon storyline, an amazing soundtrack and brilliant voice acting. I could gush about it all day. Now what do we need to do to get a sequel?!5/5

8.10.2015

This game is great fun, but not at all easy. It has no map, just shows the movement of the opponents from a first person point of view. It limits what you can do in any round like a strategy game. I have to fully concentrate on it, but it is a wonderful workout for the brain
