Let's start with the comprehensive review that persuaded me to buy this lens: (I can't link to it, but you'll easily find it at kenrockwell dot com). That says much of what you need to know, so I'll only add the bits it doesn't say.I now have this lens plus the more expensive Canon 100-400mm L IS II, (also reviewed at kenrockwell dot com). The two make an interesting comparison. I've used the 100-400mm a fair bit, and only played with the 70-300mm at home -- it only just arrived today.First impressions:The 70-300mm has a nice feel, with a tactile matt black finish. It looks different to other Canon lenses. The lettering on the business end is a subtle grey colour instead of brilliant white.I prefer this. This isn't a bug lens, but bugs don't like bright white things moving near them. This saves having to use black tape to cover it up. It's not a flashy lens to look at, which is good. All the controls on the 70-300mm are easy to reach, on account of the main switches being a reasonable distance from the lens mount (or camera body). I have a Canon 24-105mm, which is quite fiddly in this respect. As Ken says, auto-focusing is great -- far better than the clunky stepper motor-driven focusing of the 24-105mm. The 24-105mm really needs this nano USM drive, and I expect Canon to update it at some point. The 70-300mm sets the new auto-focusing standard, although I don't see any practical difference between it and the 100-400mm, which is also superb. It's much smaller and lighter than the 100-400mm, so it will get used when I want to travel light. This is why I bought it.I tend to use the 100-400mm with a 1.4x extender, giving nearly twice the focal length of the 70-300mm, fully zoomed. Combined with its shorter focusing distance, the 100-400mm is an all-round better lens, except for its size, weight and price. You can't use extenders with the 70-300mm, but can use extension tubes for close-up work.I feel the LED focus scale is a bit gimmicky. A handy feature is that you can turn it off completely, to save your batteries. You only have to turn it off once, as the camera remembers.I think that about covers it. For the main detail, read Ken's review. If you are on a tight budget, or want to travel light, the 70-300mm is a great lens. I would support Ken's recommendation of "go get one", even if you already have the bigger and better 100-400mm.Read full review...

A lens that you need in your kit bag, the 300mm opens up a whole new ball game and teh IS is super smooth. Only downside is i feel images are less sharp compared to a wide or a mid range zoom lens. no matter how steady your hand is theres always a factor of blurry images

I saw one of the reviews on here saying this lens is soft and not very sharp. Nothing could be further from the truth. This lens rocks. My son has the 70-200 f2.8 professional lens. If you don't need large aperture, this lens is just as good.

I used one of these at a recent wedding and never missed a shot with it even in the low light of the evening reception - didn't feel the need for a wider (2.8) aperture as this lens did the job perfectly.

I have been using the lens for a couple of months now and it is excellent. Always pin sharp and easy to use.The only addition I would like is for a tripod clamp to be included in the package
