It might help everyone better understand these reviews of optical devices if reviewers would mention whether they wear eyeglasses or contact lenses. Evaluation of optical devices depends on whether the reviewer is looking through another set of lenses. If you wear glasses, please share the strength in diopters, and whether there is an astigmatic or cylindrical correction. Please mention if you wear bifocals or trifocals, and the strength of the reading areas.Overall, I found these Bushnell Xtra-Wide 4x30 Binoculars to be a good value. I use them to watch opera. On a recent trip, these binoculars worked well. I saw six opera performances, in three different opera houses, sitting at various distances from the stage. This was a 3,000 mile road trip, and these Bushnell binoculars seemed to be fairly durable. They survived the packing and unpacking, and the vibration and jostling of car travel. Of course, I did not do any deliberate drop or impact testing! They also survived the summer heat soak test, packed in the parked car.The physical size and weight of these binoculars was not a problem for me, although some might find their size uncomfortable, since these Bushnells are significantly larger than traditional opera glasses. But they are light enough to carry easily, along with an umbrella and water bottle. (This was a long, HOT, summer road trip.) The 4X magnification is a bit stronger than the traditional 3X of opera glasses. However, the field of view IS significantly wider than the smaller, traditional opera glasses. The extra magnification did not make the image more unstable, that is, shaky or jittery. I prefer these Bushnells to the traditional opera glasses.Because these "bins" are larger than average, I was concerned that the opera houses might suspect that these Bushnells were a pair of digital camera binoculars, and object to their use. But no one said anything. Ushers WERE asking people to put away any cameras. Photography IS prohibited. (Here are examples of camera binoculars and camcorder binoculars:

I bought these to bring to three Broadway shows. The 4x power is perfect for that, and the wide view is great because you can view the whole width of the stage without moving the binoculars around. The only problem during a Broadway show is that the binoculars are a bit bulky. For a Broadway show, a smaller, more compact, 4x opera glasses might be better. The focus is very sharp, which is better than expected with a focus-free binocular. The focus-free is nice because I could pass it around to others in my party, then they just put them up and viewed without having to fool around with focusing.Once football season starts, I think these will be great. I go to several football games a year, and usually get the crappy noise-blead cheap seats. These will be great for those seats. I used to bring 8x binoculars to the games, but they are to high powered and only let you see a single player, not really see overall game play. So these should be perfect for that. Also, the somewhat bulky size of the binoculars won't be a problem at a football game, the way they are a Broadway show.I also took these up to the top of the Empire State building, and everyone said they where much better than using the coin-operated binoculars on the observation deck. They gave a great overall view of the city.Focus is very sharp in the center, and a little less sharp at the edges. But I am very happy with the focus-free binoculars. They also come with a nice case, and a small scratch-free cleaning cloth for the lenses.Nice overall value. I would give 5 stars if they were a bit more compact. So, I'm knocking a star off due to them being a bit to bulky for theater use. But for stadium use, they would be 5 stars.

Living under the light-polluted skies of Los Angeles, I find these very useful in learning my way around the constellations. I can see all the stars that I normally would be able to see without any optical aid at all if I was under the dark skies of the desert, although constellations are of course spread out by a factor of 4x. But unlike with regular binoculars, this magnification is low enough for me to see the stars "in context". That is, I can see enough of the sky in the field of view to easily pick out and recognize constellations from my charts, which is very enjoyable.-I have two problems with them, though. Most important is the fact that they do not focus. My eyes are still pretty good at age 64,but even now the stars are not quite as sharp as they would be if I was able to tweak the focus. And as I get older I'm afraid my progressing farsightedness will make it even worse. Also, as others have mentioned, the loops through which we're supposed to thread the strap are too small, making the strap useless. While I can live with them strapless, why they would put these on the market with this defect is beyond me.-Still, I give these binoculars 4 stars instead of 3 (as I originally intended), because even with these deficiencies I really do like them. I have three telescopes of various sizes as well as a couple more powerful pairs of binoculars, but these little guys fill an important optical niche in my enjoyment of the heavens.-

These binoculars are wonderful for musicals, orchestral performances, and any production where it's important to view the entire stage. To my surprise, they even compared favorably with binoculars that I was considering buying for nature walks. True, they are bulky. But I think the self-focus feature overrides the unpleasantness of the bulk and awkwardness of the feel. The case is rather large, but nice.Unfortunately, Bushnell enclosed the wrong strap in my box - thereby starting me on an unpleasant treadmill with its customer service department. Three contacts were required before Bushnell finally sent me the correct strap; and along the way, I was required to submit a picture via email, and I was even told that I would have to send both the binoculars & non-fitting strap back at my own expense, then wait about 6 weeks for replacement. The experience was pretty awful for something as simple as a strap, and I really dread having something go wrong with the autofocus feature.Guess what. When I finally received the correct strap, it was awful. It is cheesy, and it is positioned very badly on the binoculars. I would like to call Bushnell to see whether I can buy an upgrade - but I need a rest before I do.

I had read the reviews of this binoc and found them intriguing and decided to give them a try. I've owned lots of binoculars, from the cheapest up to the Nikons made in Japan, and found most of them lacking in any number of areas. But I honestly have to say these Bushnells are the most usable and enjoyable for the money that I've ever used. I was leery about the fact that they do not have a focus wheel but this may be their biggest advantage - they really work - your eyes do the focusing and it doesn't matter if you wear glasses or not. The eyecups fold down neatly and I can see 95% of the available field with my glasses on. Those of you who don't wear glasses are in for a treat as the FOV is expansive. The binocs will be in focus to a fairly close range (20 ft?) to infinity. The other bonus for these binoculars is the limited power (4X). This eliminates one of the most bothersome things about ordinary binoculars - image shake. There is very little shake with 4 power and it makes viewing through them a joy. Even with the low power I was able to spot sails over the horizon while at sea. Can't recommend these binocs more and will be getting a second pair.

Anyone who watches birds in their back yard knows that they can fly away in seconds, so auto focus is a must. I have two older models which are slightly lighter but are still a favorite of mine. I bought this newer pair to take to our lake house this summer to watch the Bald Eagles. I originally bought a more inexpensive pair of auto focus binoculars here on Amazon but ended up returning them. These have eye cups that block out any peripheral distractions and that makes them stand out to me. Also, I have long eye lashes that get in the way, so I can back off of the lenses and still see due to the eye cups blocking my peripheral vision. These give me a nice crisp view of all the nature scenes I want to view. You may be able to buy a more inexpensive pair, but these are worth the little extra you will pay. Plus the carrying case is really nice! Good value for your money here.

Bought these to watch the OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY football games. My seats are in the end zone and I could see clearly all the action taking place at the opposite end zone. The game started in daylight and as the lights came on no difference in clarity. People sitting around me thought the shape looked a little peculiar so they asked if they could try them, everyone could not believe the way the auto focus would adjust. Even people wearing glasses could not believe that there was no adjustment and they could see the same as people not wearing glasses. The wide angle allows you to see the whole width of the field with out any rotating back and forth. If I had ten pair I could have sold every pair that night.Everyone that tried them said they would get a pair before the next game. So I should be sitting around a group of fellow Bushnell users.

I am totally blown away with the performance of these binoculars. Yesterday was my third time using them at the San Diego Charger game. The field of view allows to see so much more of the action than my previous pair. On short to medium passes you can watch the quarterback get crunched while watching the ball reach it's target. I can imagine how these would be superb at a concert, the theater, or other sporting events. These are not the binoculars to use if you want to see an individual or object up close, but rather to see the "whole picture". This is one of my best purchases. I researched the hell out of wide angle binoculars. Spent probably 10 hours of research. Read every review. My efforts paid off big time.

I bought this binocular based on recommendation of earlier reviews and I have to admit that they were right. 4x30 seem kind of weak in term of magnification but for what it was designed for this binocular is excellent. You get to see more in a given area than standard 8x20 binocular and you don't have to worry about focusing.Initially I thought this binocular was very bulky but I was quickly won over on how comfortable it was holding it. This is the binocular to carry when you are going to air show, concert, and sports viewing.

These are pretty much as advertised. I have used them at a concert where 3-D effects were used, and my primary use is for soccer games. They have met every need for me. Some may find them large, but the results will make you forget. For the size they are much lighter than most binoculars. For some reason I had to order twice as the first order was lost somewhere. Amazon buyers may need to watch delivery times for problems like this. It was posted as shipped but it was never received by the carrier.

These are excellent binoculars for sporting events. I use them to watch soccer, football, and other stadium events. They are light, have a SUPER field of view, and let me see details with ease. I announce soccer games at my kids' high school, and these binoculars allow me to stay with the play, see specific players, and keep on top of the action. When I let others use them, it's often difficult to get them back because they don't want to give up the improved view.

2.4.2013

This is great if you just want to get a clearer picture of something not too far away. You're not going to be getting a high magnification but the best part with these is due to the wide view and lower magnification you will not get any of the shakiness that you get with normal binoculars. So you don't need a tripod, this is great for people who just want a closer look and for those who don't have perfectly steady hands (which is most of us).

17.10.2008

I use this mainly to watch football games from the upper view level of the stadium. I see the area of play very well and can easily see the action of the football. It's great that these are focus-free, so I am able to share it with someone without having to adjust the focus. It would be nice if the focus was stronger so I can see the players' expressions, but that is probably a lot to ask! Overall, these are great for sporting events.

5.3.2015

My wife loves these for the theater. We are usually in the upper balcony at the Paramount in Seattle, and it is great viewing from both ends of the stage. We still use my other binoculars if we want to see something in detail since the focus angle is more acute. The auto-focus works well, but does not make corrections for my bad eyesight, I still need to use my glasses when using these, unlike my traditional binoculars.

15.12.2019

I bought these for my wife who was going to Hawaii's premier Hula Festival and to replace our very old opera glasses that broke. The extra wide FOV is excellent for live stage performances and athletic events (only 4X magnification). It automatically focuses into a crisp bright view. But it does look a bit odd, not only because of its size, but because it looks like that WALL-E guy from the Pixar film.
