My trusty five year old HP MediaSmart server died on me and, no matter what I did, it would not restore properly. It’s funny how these ‘restore’ programs never work the only time you ever need them ... anyway, I removed the four hard disk drives from this unit with an aim to purchase an enclosure to put them in. I couldn’t find one suitable and so decided to purchase the Buffalo 8TB (2 x 4TB) LinkStation Duo NAS (RAID 0/1). This had 2 disk drives already with it.The product was a dream to set up and use and so when I noticed that Amazon were selling the Buffalo LS-QVL/E-EU LinkStation Pro Quad 4 Bay NAS Enclosure,I jumped at the chance to make the purchase and make use my four old disk drives.Installation was easy with just four small screws securing each drive in place. They slide in and slide out after that, what could be simpler? The fan is super-quiet in use and there is an ‘auto’ option so that the unit switches on and off with your computer. It takes a little time for the Buffalo LS-QVL/E-EU LinkStation Pro Quad 4 Bay NAS Enclosure to create the Raid 5 array that I opted for (one disk failing means you simply swap it for a good one and you lose no data) but this is typical of any device of this nature so no problems there ... I could use the device at the same time as well.Data transfer is faster than my much older Buffalo Terrastation server but, interestingly, the navigation program you get with the new Buffalo Linkstations also detects this older drive so, a nice bonus there. You can back up your PC or Mac using the Buffalo LS-QVL/E-EU LinkStation Pro Quad 4 Bay NAS Enclosure, access the drive from anywhere in the world and a host of other features.I’ve put this server to the test since my purchase and it appears to be a very reliable, fast and solid piece of kit.I had one minor issue of the ‘automatic’ function to make it readable via a web browser from anywhere in the world, not working ... the 230+ page manual explained that I should, therefore, do this manually. Easier said than done as I had to do a little research to find the exact settings I needed for this. I did achieve it, though and all is well. If you purchased a second Buffalo product, you’d be able to perform this task easily but it’s not for beginners, I feel. It’s nice to see the Buffalo drives all coming alive when I boot up my computer and then closing down after I switch off, another nice touch. If your old server breaks down, don’t waste your old hard disk drives, go for the Buffalo LS-QVL/E-EU LinkStation Pro Quad 4 Bay NAS Enclosure where it’s priced low enough to be affordable and high enough so you know that you’re getting quality over other larger enclosures that are starting to become available.

I have bought 4 bay NAS enclosures recently that are twice the price of this one. This one is just as good and some cases better. It is certainly better then the Netgear I bought (and then returned) and is up there with the Seagate I have.Set up is quite easy. I installed 4 2tb disks - 3 WDC and 1 Samsung. After turning it on for the first time the blue LED would not stop flashing after about 45 minutes. I thought that I would initialise the disks by attaching them to my Windows 7 pc one at a time and follow the in-house instructions to use diskpart to erase all partitions. After I had did this the machine proceeded to boot up and initial my disks as RAID 0 which is what I wanted. It was seen on the network so I mapped to it and started copying over files to it.It was going at about 120gb per hour as opposed to 200gb on the 2 bay Buffalo NAS I have. It is still faster than the Seagate that manages about 75gb per hour.Anyway, still copying over 24 hours later and it has done nearly 3tb of data. I will be giving it just over 7tb to copy so should be done in about 24 hours.I will be buying more of these NAS devices as this one is in the living room as it is running virtually silent. I have some noisy NAS's in my office and I could do with the piece and quiet of the Buffalo.Great value and a great device.Update 28/08/14 - I now have 6 of these NAS devices and none of them have let me down. I have had two hard disk failures and have had those drives replaced and got the NAS's working again. The latest drive that failed was an 8 year old 1tb Samsung drive so that was not unexpected. What was unexpected is that I bought a new 5tb drive and put that in with no problems whatsoever. I reckon the new 6tb drives will work also. So I'll be buying a 7th NAS and putting in two 5tb and a couple of spare 1tb's that I have lying around. I like to use RAID 0 so have NAS's backing up other NAS's - it's fast and works for me.

I upgraded to this from a ReadyNAS Duo and. It was not a waste of money. Far more storage capacity and much more user friendly. The user interface is straight forward and it was easy to setup. I also found that all my ripped music and DVDs played without hassle. This was not the case with the ReadyNAS as it couldn't handle all MKV files.I am certainly no expert with these things but it is working great for me as a simple NAS and media server. I would recommend this to someone like me who can find their way around a computer and deal with basic issues but is not a techy and has never programmed. I don't know if it would do everything you wanted if you are an advanced user.Instructions were alsovery clear and helped me to achieve what I wanted within a few hours of messing around.

I had to write my own review to offset the balance of the gentlemen who has had difficulties with OS X Lion and Time Machine Backup, which did not work for him but which has been resolved by a firmware update. I daresay it is rather unfair to rate a product lower because it will not play nicely with something which was launched *after* it was - regardless now, the problem is solved.I feel that there is a very strong case to be made accusing Buffalo and other manufacturers of similar devices of rushing their offerings to market at the expense of software quality. By now however, the firmware has reached a level of maturity which means there are no real glaring omissions any longer, and I would be comfortable in recommending this device to any home user.

Very solid all metal build.Up and running very quickly. But being a Techinal dude I wanted to make some changes.Suffers from poor documentation and some of the defaults are set to japenese.Need to be IT savy if you dont want to use the default settings. It took a while to be able to gain root access via ssh and unless you are IT savy with the Linux O/S then this could be a problem. My config is using two 2 TB disks raid 1 (mirror) and two 1TB disks raid 1 (mirror). The default raid is raid 5 for a fully polulated box so if this is not what you need then you will need to destroy this and setup your own raid. Also it is not made clear that the NAS will power off if the power mode little switch at theback is set to auto and not manual.

Really impressed with the build quality of the device. The four bay one gives you up to 16TB space to store files.Limited hard drives models though in the list that can be installed. so i went for the 4TB Seagate (DM4000). 4 of them running in raid 10 absolutely brilliant. Lost 8TB but at least secure in that way. The device does not make any noise at all, easy to install and configured with the provided software. No usb 3.0 or second ethernet but it certainly does the job.Update:13.03.2017 Still running with no problems at all on the same set of hard drives.

can't fault this at all I don't use it for anything heavy duty I use it as the hub of my in home entertainment center. My music, tv and photo's are all stored for viewing and listening any time anywhere in the house but I don't think it would be fast enough on any work level I used to have the smaller duo linkstation and that gave 10 years good service and retired without any issues effecting it ever so there was no doubt as to what I was getting as a follow up.

Web interface is all right. Initial setup was simple and pretty quick.Built in bittorrent is great its pretty much utorrent. The media server is twonky and it works great.Transferring from the NAS to PC over gigabit lan caps out at about 60mb/s.Transferring to the NAS from PC over the same gigabit lan caps out at around 13mb/s. Bit rubbish but I can live with it.

First unit faulty but 2nd one OK. I'm pleased with it's performance and easy of use.Looses one star due to faulty unit and poor web support. Otherwise for the money I'm more than happy with it. Long term use will be the next test of it.

Had a big issue with this item when it arrived, it wouldn't work. Being technically minded, I forced an update of the firmware on the device and everything now works well. The NAS is easy to set up, quick, reliable and a great buy.

An excellent NAS that is easy to setup and has lots of useful built in features. I used WD red Hard drives (4tb each) and I am finding it all quick and reliable.

Took a little while to understand the interface but all setup and running as I wanted after two evening's playing

Works exactly as I need it, plus the on board software makes it easy to set up and use. Couldn't fault it.

Faster, easier and quieter than my Drobo FS. Probably more reliable too.
