We have had great fun with this toaster. Two of my children love cheese toasties and usually use toastabags in the toaster . However, the cheese rarely melts enough before the bread burns, they are a bit lazy to wait for the grill and think our Breville Pannini maker makes the square white bread a bit "steamed" (curiously it does). This is a great solution - I have always loved how Breville's seal the toast and have a molten cheese centre. The toaster looks really stylish and chunky and matches the white gloss kettle (which I have). It is like a lttle child's suitcase. Although ostensibly it looks very much like a 1980's sandwich toaster there are some great tweaks that make it much easier to clean. There are two chunky buttons on each side that when pressed release the hot plates -they come out entirely and so can be washed thoroughly- making cheese eruptions much easier to clean. The plates are also deeper - so more filling can be added and allows for more creativity if you want to try multiple fillings . You can even use the plates like a hotplate to cook eggs or flat pieces of meat (might be useful if you are a student with no clean pans around) although they will come out with the classic scallop design. The ceramic coating is also thicker than normal teflon and looks like it will much harder to damage and scratch. The instructions advise to butter the wrong side of the bread (to lubricate the plates) but my kids hate cheese mixed with butter (we never add butter to sandwiches) and the new plates have been fine - the bread has not stuck on the plates , so the toasties are a bit more healthy and to our taste. The toaster has an small LED that lights up when the toaster is heating and turns off when the toaster is hot enough to place the sandwich inside - it also indicates the temperature and when the sandwich is ready. It comes with a small instruction leaflet and a couple of ideas (banana and choclate toastie etc).I like it but wonder how much we will really use it long term (our pannini press languishes right at the back of a cupboard) and there is also the old problem of storage. The price point atm (£44) also seems very high for a non essential item like this toaster.Update December 2016 - after a flurry of sandwich making the kids have reverted to using toastabags (no heating up time) and my aprtner the grill. The toaster is now languishing in the cupboard as it was getting dusty/greasy on the worktop and not being used. Still, a novelty item.

I love toasties, my favourite is cheese and mushroom and was keen to try this one as I have recently moved home and left my old one behind and this one matches my new Breville Kettle.Whilst I never thought of my old one as bulky, this is much more streamlined and so much sleeker looking with the shiny white and silvery metal combination. Lovely rounded edges and a big easy to grab handle which clicks locked, and feet so it can stand upright and out of the way when not in use.Once plugged into the mains, a green light comes on. This is not a green- ready to use light which I at first thought, as in..... Wow? It's ready to use already? No, this is just a power on indicator. Once it heats up,an amber light comes on and it took about 4 mins. About the same as my old toastie machine.Open it up and you find the cooking plates really are much deeper than usual, I buttered the outside faces of my bread as instructed and placed them with the rounded crust end sticking outwards and then piled on my cheese and mushrooms, sandwiching the mushroom between two slices of cheese!!Place the second slice on and then carefully close the lid down and lock it in place. The toaster is meant to be faster at cooking than other toasters and I didn't really find this to be the case, it took as long as I would have normally expected, about 4-5 minutes but I have no complaints about that.Once cooked, the edges were perfectly sealed and then filling was perfect, molten cheese, soft mushrooms. The bread was very evenly toasted and crisp and lifted out of the toaster very easily. There was minimal butter residue on the plates which I wiped off with a bunched up paper towel but if you've made more mess than that, there are one-push release buttons that allow the whole of the two plates to be removed completely, for washing.Just to finish, they've even provided a space for the cord to wind around when you put it away so it's not trailing along the counter top.Having deeper plates gives you much more scope to experiment with different flavour combinations. I've tried the chocolate spread and banana idea that jumped out of the box at me when I opened it, but have also tried chorizo and tomato, and tuna, cheese and sweet corn, all of which were delicious!!Do I love it?Yes !!!

i've had a few Breville sandwich toasters over the years but this is definitely the best, for two reasons: it's very stylish, and the hotplates are removable for washing. In other ways it does basically the same job as any other Breville toastie maker, which means it does a generally very good job, though I find 7–10 minutes toasting gives better results than the recommended 5–6.But it really looks great. The metal accents and the slick white finish are genuinely stylish, and it's nice and compact for storage, stands on end safely and has a carrying handle built in. You'd be proud to have it on display. There are metalised buttons to release the hotplates. This works really well and means there's no excuse for not cleaning it properly so it's ready to use when you fancy a toastie. You can just shove them in the dishwasher. I think this is the greatest advantage of this model and I wouldn't buy a toastie maker without this feature. My last machine was awkward to clamp shut but this one works well and is relatively easy to close even with a well-filled sandwich.Breville claims this makes the deepest toasties yet, but I didn't notice a huge difference from older ones. Like all but the first toastie maker I ever owned, decades ago, this doesn't properly cut the toastie in half so you have to use a knife. No big deal. It seems to seal the edges well though and melted cheese doesn't seem to escape onto the body of the toaster or your counter top because of the deep ridge at the back of the bottom hotplate. The power cord is rather short so you have to put it close to a power socket. You can wrap the cord around the cord tidy that's built in.Overall I'm very impressed. This is the best toastie maker yet as far as I'm concerned. I love the looks, and the removable hotplates should make me use it much more often because it will be clean and ready to go every time. This one won't be going in the back of the cupboard!

As a teenager growing up in the late 70s and on to uni in the 80s I lived off toasted sandwiches, thanks to an early iteration of the Breville Sandwich maker. Although it multiplied my culinary repetoire no end, it did have its limitations, you couldn't put much filling in (usually cheese and something) but you invariably did, and the resulting escapee cheese would weld itself to hinges and down the sides.Having been swayed by panini makers more recently, I will always have a soft spot for these little molten filled triangles. This Breville High Gloss Sandwich Toaster is a good looking little machine, I fancy a bit bigger than the originals, and it seems to have addressed some of its short comings. The dishes are deeper, so the filling to bread ratio is better, the hinges are covered, so when you inevitably continue to put too much filling in, it is much easier to clean. The DuraCeramic plates are much more non stick, and you can take the plates out for a thorough clean, I don't think you can pop them in the dishwasher, but the clean very easily. The only downside is that you are limited to square bread, I don't think the brand or variety matters that much ... My guilty pleasure is white medium sliced filled with cheddar and Branson.Much much better than the original, and a nostalgic tasty treat for me. It is not as flexible as a panini press, especially for baguettes, ciabatta and other non square bread, but I love it.

The toaster is best suited to square cut bread and as with all previous Breville toasters they recommend that you lightly butter the outer side of the bread. I’ve used without buttering the outside and still get great results. You simple pop your bread on the plates, dollop on your preferred filling and add the top slice, close the toaster which has an easy close and lock handle and the plates heat up very fast. The Breville toaster produces lovely golden brown fully sealed toasted sandwiches but watch out for the fillings when you bite in to them. I’ve had a burnt lip biting in to toasties with hot tomatoes just like the old days.Make sure you use a wooden or plastic spoon on the ceramic plates to pop out your hot sandwiches.Might be obvious but there are two plates so you can make 2 sandwiches with different fillings. On the side of the Breville there’s small buttons that you press to release the hot plates for easy cleaning. I found wiping them when they are still a little warm is easiest when cleaning. The toaster is a lovely compact size and can be stored upright top save space in cupboards.Iconic sandwich toaster that produces hot deep filled and perfectly sealed toasted sandwiches.Love it.

It's early days yet, as we've only had the sandwich maker for a few days, but the results so far are really good. We've tried others in the past, but weren't pleased with the quality. I'd never heard of Breville until I started hunting online for a new one, but so far I would say it was the right decision. The Breville Toaster makes a sturdy impression and looks very stylish into the bargain. The removable plates are very easy to clean. As long as the filling doesn't go to the edges of the bread, it is nicely sealed in around the edges and in the middle, giving a really professional effect. I find that you have to lower the lid very slowly until the catch closes,as I would worry that it might snap off if pressed down too quickly. That's no great hardship, and after that - just wait 5 minutes before removing a lovely crisp and delicious toasted sandwich!Today the matching waffle plates arrived by post, so I hope they fit, and that the waffles are as easy to make and as delicious as the toasts. It would be an added plus if you could switch the toaster off without having to pull out the plug every time, but hey - I suppose you can't have everything ;-)

OVERVIEW:High-gloss upper-end sandwich toaster. To date I've been using a pannini press which gives sub-par results if you want a regular toastie, so was pleased to get the chance to try this.PROS:Well built and feels like a quality itemDetachable plates make cleaning easierDidn't take too long to heat up (a few minutes)Toasties cooked evenly and plates got nice and hotWas useable without butter on the outside (which is my preference). I also do sometimes use a small bit of spray oil which works wellDeeper chambers than other toasted sandwich makers I have used in the pastCONS:Colour-scheme not to all tastes I would think in terms of fitting in with other kitchen gadgetsGreen light when you turn it on a bit misleading (means power-on,rather than ready to cook)Expensive for what is ultimately, a fairly straight forward kitchen gadgetOVERALL:Reliable, high quality sandwich toaster that turns out great toasties. The colour scheme wouldn't normally be my first choice but this will live in the cupboard when not in use. Feels and handles like a quality item and at this price point I hope will give many years of service. Recommended.

This is a smashing toaster, looks nice, and cooks better. I committed the cardinal sin of overfilling the first time I used it, of course, and ended up with cheese oozing out all over the worktop, but there was still enough filling left to enjoy it. Just use a normal amount of filling, it cooks evenly and only really needs a wipe over to clean. But if do you take the plates off, just a click on a button, it's very easy. It's not the cheapest, but worth the money. I have had several toasters over the years, only for them to be relegated to the back of the cupboard for various reasons. This one can be compactly stored on its side, but as yet, has not seen the inside of a cupboard, it lives on the worktop.Several mornings I have come downstairs and found the tell tale evidence of a midnight snack. My son has shown a lot of interest in it, so I have given in and bought one for him. It's great if you only have a limited time to have a filling snack. I can't say about the durability of it as we haven't had it long enough to say.

When replacing our old toasty maker I insisted that it have removable plates as these things are a pain in the proverbial to keep clean otherwise. We settled on this model, with the equivalent Cuisinart we had been looking at receiving less than glowing reviews. So: this cooks toasties nicely, the ceramic plates don't stick, appear to be holding up perfectly, and are easily removed/cleaned/refitted. The fillings don't put over the edge of the machine during use. The unit itself is also straightforward to clean, and hasn't disintegrated yet. Excellent! The only challenge is going to be finding a loaf which fills the trays well, as everything we have tried so far is somewhat smaller than the space allowed (we tend to use 'standard'square cut supermarket bread for our toasties). However, this has not been an issue with the sandwiches sealing well all the way around, so this may be intended by design - you just need to use some care in closing to prevent things moving around too much.

we have the black older version of this toaster already so being given the chance to try this one with the new ceramic plates was a great bonus the design is as always very good the unit tucks away in the cupboard as its not too big , the plates remove for easy cleaning/washing and most bagged square supermarket loaves fit it well, during cooking the sandwich seals nicely and any leakages of cheese are easily cleaned off just as well as the previous non stick version,I did however prefer the outside of the older toaster as it was erasy to wipe clean as it didnt have the perferations in the steel , Im not sure if this would be a problem and will update if it becomes so.

A good deep all round sandwich toaster. Back twenty years ago, it was quite easy to find nice deep filled sandwich toasters. For some reason over then and now, the public or the manufacturer must favour less filling in their toasties. There does however seem to be a revival in the old-style toasters. This one is a particularly good example of deep filled, yet still remaining easy to clean with the green side of a dish sponge.Quick heatup and good steady heat without the dreaded heat spots. A great all-round toaster for desserts and savouries.

The principle of this breville toastie maker is the same as it was way back in the day except its just got a lot more bling and deeper plates. Lets face it, even if it was gold plated and diamond encrusted it would still end up in your kitchen cupboard as nobody wants yet another device cluttering up the worktop, so just as well its pretty compact and easy to store. It works well, seals the edges nicely and removable non-stick plates are easy to clean. I won't insult you by advising you on how to make a toastie as it's pretty obvious.

Fantastic sandwich toaster that does exactly what it needs to do. Perfect browning, cooks evenly, easy to clean, ceramic plates give a good even temperature. Looking at other reviews, I was nervous about the handle. From my point of view, regardless of filling, just take your time when clamping together, pushing down from the sides of the toaster (not hot), and when ready, clamp in place, don't force it in one go. My only negative, the clamp is plastic and does feel a bit flimsy, this maybe needs to be made of something stronger.

I do like toasties but I'm always put off by the difficult cleaning of the plates afterwards and loosing most of my fillings. I had to play about with the bread a bit and my cheese did ooze out - practice will make perfect. I don't like having my worktops cluttered and this is very compact and easy to store away without taking up too much space. It looks bright and smart if you did want to leave it out on show. The plates are exceptionally easy to clean. It's worth paying a bit extra for and it's handy for a quick, hot snack.

This is worth the extra money for the ceramic plates over the standard version (which we have used a lot also), these plates are easier to clean (I rub off the majority of the cheese residue with warm water and a soft brush before putting into dishwasher), tougher (doesn’t scratch as easily as non stick version, best to use a wooden fish slice to remove toasties) and it only takes about 3 minutes to cook compared to 5 minutes on the non ceramic version.
