Picture the scene, dear reader. You're a young bachelor, living alone, with an indescribable craving for all things toasted, grilled and bready. You've lived without satisfaction for days, but the fridge is prepared: a fresh loaf of bread (I find supermarket brand works best but your tastes may be a little more bourgeoisie), a new block of chedder, and a miscellany of other sandwich fillers.Flashback to three days ago, when you ordered a Breville VST041 Deep Fill Sandwich Toaster, saliva dripping from your cracked lips as you confirmed your postage and payment details. Now the moment is at hand. There's a knock at the door (or the doorbell rings, whatever),you greet the postperson (there's no way this thing fits through a letterbox), you might shake hands, that might not be your thing, you part ways. Ravenous, you tear open the cardboard wrappings in a frenzy. Anticipation and hunger combine to form a sweaty cocktail that seeps slowly from your pores. Removing the grill from it's packaging feels awesome, comparable to scaling a mountain. The moment drags on forever, but is over in seconds.Pause, dear reader, and breathe. Before you can finally realise your cravings, you need to give this thing a quick wash. And you do just that. Soap glides over the rippled surfaces of the grilling trays, and wipes away easily with a tea towel. You feel your heartbeat quicken. Inserting the trays into the grill is fluid and graceful, there's no wasted motion here. The satisfying click sends chills down your spine. Somewhere, a pigeon coos, and you feel alive for the first time. Here is where I must leave the details almost exclusively to your imagination. After all, we all like different fillers in our grilled sandwiches. Personally I go in for a chedder base, ably assisted by a supporting cast of pickle (or it's understudy, caramelised onion) and tomatoes. The ultimate arrangement is your own to consider, but whatever preference may tickle your taste buds, always consider buttering the outside of the bread beforehand. There are no words to describe the effect this creates, and I shall not attempt to recreate the feeling. Such things are best left unsaid. For the final world, I shall simply say this: you can do no better in a grill-famished pinch than this machine. It's a delight.

The positives. A really solid piece of kitchen equipment, just as you'd expect from Breville. The removable plates mean the unit is really easy to clean; but I'm disappointed that the sandwich recesses aren't as deep as those in Brevilles I've previously owned. (Deeper plates are one of the manufacturer's selling points for this model, so I've knocked off a star for that.) It does make great sandwiches though; and I've already experimented with thicker bread slices and healthier types of bread very successfully.(As an aside, I should say that I didn't have any problems, as others have reported, with finding bread slices that fit: the first standard loaf I tried worked perfectly. The trick is to put it in sideways, as directed in the accompanying instructions.)The not-so-positives. Maybe it's just me, but I think "crimped" toasted sandwich makers have (arguably) had their day: they're very much a relic of the 70s in my opinion as, in design terms, they haven't really moved on from the very earliest iterations of the toasted sandwich maker to accommodate today's preferences and expectations. I hate those hard edges too. That's why I also have a modern Breville VST025 Sandwich Press Breville VST025 Sandwich Press, Stainless Steel. It's much more versatile and even more difficult to fault.Notwithstanding this criticism, the toaster will be used for as long as it lasts; and I'd say it's sturdy enough to last for years! But which of the two Breville options would this particular toasty fan take to the desert island? The modern press, without a doubt.

Well it makes a reasonable toasted sandwich but I wouldn't say they were any deeper filled than a very old sandwich toaster I used to own - I can't really see where the 'deep fill' claim comes from. The first one it tried leaked melted cheese which poured down the side of the toaster and onto the worktop and I didn't really think I had put all that much cheese in!The non-stick plates are extremely easy to remove, wash and replace and they can go into the dishwasher (but they are easy to wash by hand too).In my experience the toaster takes around five minutes to heat up to the correct temperature (when a light comes on)so I just make sure that I turn it on before I start to prepare the sandwich.I have found that you need to buy a very square loaf of bread to make the best sandwiches - the slightly more rectangular ones result in the top 1cm being outside the heated area and therefore not toasted. I have also found that you have to press down quite hard on the lid to make the toaster close - I haven't had any problems with the clip that locks the top and bottom together whilst it toasts yet but it doesn't feel all that durable. The toaster comes with an instruction manual that also has a few recipe ideas. It also suggests that the best toastie requires the outside of the bread to be buttered and this has been my experience too - it goes much crispier. You can also buy interchangeable waffle plates for this toaster which would make it a more versatile bit of kitchen kit I suppose.

I can barely say anything bad about the almighty Breville out back... John'll do you a toastie. It will make 2 toasties at a time (or just 1). As someone who remembers enjoying a toastie as a child, I decided to purchase the brand that made the toastie what it is.The two plates are easy to remove and clean (gently), there are two buttons on the side that when pushed in, will release the plates for removal.Easy to use, just plug it in and wait for the orange light to come on, then you are ready to load. Just time it yourself, usually 6 mins for a branston + cheddar toastie.Be warned this can and will get messy, the cheese may ooze out the side a little. If you get lucky you might have a relatively clean toast, and can re use it without washing (within a week or so I'd say). The only negatives I will say is it could be better at being stored. It presents itself as being like a small briefcase/lunchbox with a handle. However the plastic base underneath extends a tiny bit too far out the back, meaning it can't be stood upright (handle up) for storage very well. Also the cable is just long enough for most situations I think, but it's a thick cable that won't go where you want it. It feels like the cable should wrap around the base but it can't be secured around anything, meaning the cable will just flop around freely wherever you put it.As with most new purchases, novelty will wear off, and over use will make you tire. Mix it up a bit, experiment.

I like this a lot. Having had sandwich toasters from various brands and a so-called professional waffle maker from Waring, I've finally found the perfect solution. Things to like:1. High quality removable non-stick plates. This not only makes clean-up a breeze, but allows different plates (e.g. waffle plates) to be used. The plates themselves have a high-quality non-stick coating and are quite deep: useful for deep-filled sandwiches and "proper" waffles.2. Compact. This is only slightly bigger than two slices of bread, side by side. Really nice if, like me, your kitchen worksurface has too many appliances.3. Construction. This has high-quality construction and looks cool. The plate release mechanism is reassuringly positive, as is the front latch, and the indicators simple. No need for temperature control as, frankly, all such machines are used at full power. Ditto timers, which are pointless, as timing is recipe-dependent.4. Reasonable power. These cooked great waffles in about 5 1/2 minutes. Slightly less for a cheese and Italian salsmi toastie. That might seem long, but frankly it's not much different for any of the waffle-makers I've used with my recipes. Waffles came out nice and crisp outside, fluffy inside. What's not to like? Well it is French, but that's not reason enough not to give it a perfect five stars, for being really good at a great price.Hmm....waffles....

Oh my! am I in love or what? I have loved toasted sarnies for many a year but oh help the clean up!!! This is why so many finish up at the back of the least used kitchen cupboard never to see the light of day again (poor things) The removable plates have put paid to this problem and the good old toastie is reborn! Before buying I read many reviews some of which complained about deposits left in the dishwasher as these plates are dishwasher safe. I would argue that the non stick promise is very true to its word and as long as you follow the instructions there is so no need to put them in there. A very quick wash in the sink is more than enough to clean these little babies. What's up with you all,a tiny bit of hand washing too much for you? Anyway can you do an omelette it as promised? YES you can! Gorgeous little parcels of whatever you want to add as your filling But don't overdo it (as I did on first go) as it can bubble over the sides if you do but even taking this into account clean up is a doddle .The worst aspect of cleaning has always been that groove along the back, could I ever get that properly clean after a few toasties? No chance! BUT the removable plates have a lip edge that encloses that area so no growing crusty build up has a hope of developing. I am very pleased with this and would buy another anytime. Happy toasting folks.

I bought this to replace one I had for years but rarely used because it was flippin' hard to clean and I love a good toastie! This machine is great and produces excellent toasties every time. I don't bother putting butter/margarine on the outside as recommended as this is way too messy for me and I still get a golden brown and crispy toasted sandwich every time. I can make 2 sandwiches at once and I don't buy any "special sized bread", I use Hovis Multiseed and although one edge of the crusts overhangs a little, it doesn't matter as it still seems to crisp up nicely. The thing that sells this for me though is the ease of cleaning - just push the little button in on the side and hey presto theplates come out which can then be washed - I don't have a dishwasher so don't know how they fair after being put in one but they wash really easily by hand in warm, soapy water. Some people have complained about the fragility of the handle - I haven't had any issues. I feel that as long as you are patient and gently press down on the lid until you are not having to force it closed, then all should be fine ... all good for me doing it this way so far.Overall, an excellent toastie machine at a great price and I am well happy with my purchase.

deep fill - I think not.The instructions tell you to use medium supermarket bread - doneThe instructions tell you to leave a gap around the edges - doneI tried putting ONE thin slice of ham in, and the lid just would not close - had to stand there pressing it down for along time before I could force the lid anywhere near closed enough to put the clip on.The finished result was good, still need a knife to cut down the "cut" in the middle as does not come apart on its own.Lovely crisp edges.Heats through in about 5 minutes (make sure the orange light is on before putting bread in)Easy to clean - when cool simply press the two buttons on the side and the heating plates pop out easily. They also pop in easily.the underside of the plates is a bit ...unfinished,- so far no spills to the underside but if there were it would be difficult to clean as full of wires. Not a bad little machine, but certainly not deep fill, even with medium bread (thinnish medium bread at that)Heats up in about 5 mins, re-heats in about 2 (if you are making multiple rounds)Shame you have to butter the outside of the bread to get a crisp finish, makes the whole process a bit messy.Hope this helps.

As a family we have become more than a little obsessed with this sandwich toaster, and toasting sandwiches obvs.As someone else said, during set up it's a bit smelly but the instruction manual does tell you how to prepare it for first use. Follow the guide and your first sandwich will be fine.Cleaning it is simple because of the easily removable plates. Some have mentioned that the clip broke, without it I can imagine the toaster is a bit useless. We've not had an issue so far but we do go steady on fillings and use the handles to shut it before letting the clip lock shut. When I bought this I was a bit nervous about bread size following other comments. We haven't had any issues and have used a variety of bread brands. The toaster doesn't cut the bread as the description suggests but a decent pair of scissors (which incidentally is also how we cut pizza) makes light work of separating the 2 triangles. We've now also bought the waffle plates for it and they've been fantastic. One of us has an egg allergy and this cooks an eggless recipe we found with amazing results! The best part is deciding what fillings to have and getting creative with leftovers! Enjoy

We had one of these years ago and decided to buy one as we always loved the sandwiches they make! The removable plates make cleaning a lot easier, although if you're not careful you can still end up with fillings oozing out the back onto the hinges which are still a nightmare to clean. Even so it's a huge improvement.I'm really not sure how they can call it deep fill though, anything more than a couple of thin slices of cheese and a thin layer of something else (e.g. onion or a tablespoon of beans) and you'll struggle to close it and / or end up with it going everywhere. Likewise if you want to make mini omelettes you'll need to use a maximum of half an egg in each section or risk making a huge mess.Relatively square medium sliced bread seals perfectly though (unless you overfill)and the toasting is pretty much perfectly even with no sticking at all. It's also very fast to heat up. It has a handy cable tidy on the base, and as an added bonus it can be stored on it's side taking up less space.Overall we're very happy with it and would buy again, though clearly there is still some room for improvement.

It's early days but so far so good. The plates ARE slightly smaller in one dimension but, contrary to remarks by other reviewers, it still accommodates what I regard as typical sliced bread. It appears more robust than the Breville VST004 toaster - the hinges look more substantial (hinges on the other model eventually work loose and coannot be tightened), the plate release is mechanism is much more sensible - the 2 external buttons on the right side (with the other model they are held in place by spring loaded green plastic clips - the plastic cannot cope with the heat after long use and bits from the toastie find their way into the spring loaded mechanism that is tricky to clean)and the clip on the handles looks better (the clip on the other model does break eventually). It is as its name suggests a deep fill toaster significantly deeper than the VST004 but it heats up just as quickly. For me, the crucial question is - with appropriate care, how long will the non-stick coating on the plates last? On the VST004 in my experience it's been no more than 12 months.

I bought this on a whim when I suddenly had a craving for the retro, sealed toasties we used to make when I was a child in the 80s.This is a surprisingly nice-looking appliance and very well-designed for making nice, crispy deep-fill toasties that seal tightly around the edges. The plates are very easily removed for washing which is very handy indeed. It heats up quickly so you don't have to hang around for long before it's ready to use.My only real complaint is that it doesn't have any kind of timer or alarm to tell you when to check if your toastie is ready. The indicator light on the top just tells when the plates are hot and ready to use; it doesn't click on or off to tell you when to check your sandwich,so you just have to watch the kitchen clock and keep opening the toaster to see how your toastie's doing. It's not a major thing, but a beep after five minutes or so would be helpful.I paid £26 for it which I think is fairly good value; the full price of £40 would be a bit steep for this item.

I've had a few toasted sandwich makers. Mostly I've bought them very cheap, used them a handful of times, tried inefficiently to gouge the dried on cheese out of every nook and cranny and then thrown them out once they get just too disgusting. This however may last longer than most... as yet the filling has actually only leaked inside into the plates, and these plates are removable and super-easy to clean, however cheesy they get. I have found that I prefer using smaller loaves (Warburton's Toastie works well) as when I tried a full size the ends stuck out and by the time cheese was starting to bubble out the sandwiches were barely toasted, and it somehow manages to close and crisp the crusts of a small loaf, even though it doesn't fill the plate. You could however cut a full size loaf to fit, I think the salient point is that all the bread should be inside and it can close fully if you want to prevent leakage. I certainly feel that as sandwich toasters go, this is as good as it gets.

I thought long and hard about this sandwich toaster especially when it claimed to be "deep filling". However, I am happy to say yes...it is.Firstly, it is a tidy piece of equipment. You unpack it, give the plates inside a little wipe and plug it it. There is a green/red light on the front to let you know when it's heating up and when it's ready for you to use.Secondly, I love how the plates can ben taken out when you want to give them a little wash. Easy as 1, 2, 3.I suppose the most important thing is that this sandwich toaster actually has room for a full slice of toasting bread. None of this cutting a heel off the bread to get it to fit in. Also I've managed to layer the bread three times with cheese, tomato and onion and the lid closes down without any hassle. In my view this is a great bit of equipment for the kitchen. I actually bought another one for my Aunt and she loves it too. If this keeps your Aunty or any other relative happy....you know you are on a winner.

Solid 4 stars - prob the best toastie maker at this price point without jumping up into hundreds and commercial ranges. Removable plates are much better and easy to clean. Makes lovey toasties. Now here is why it's not 5 stars and not perfectIt's 2017 we can put a man on the moon but absolutely no one can make a toastie maker that takes regular bread the size that is produced by 99% of companies, I find this odd. You still have to cut the bread down like you did in the 70s. The simple solution would be to measure a slice of bread before producing the machine and make the plates this size ... simple eh!But the others are all the same so it's not an issue with this machine .Cheese does still seep out the sides like the 70sAnd don't be fooled into thinking this is a deep fill sandwich as they suggest ... it's simply not true. But overall a very good but still flawed machine . But there isn't much better around.
