This is our second sandwich toaster, our previous one being bought in the 1980s is still going strong. When I received and opened this, I will admit, I was a little disappointed, but this was mainly due to the fact that I didn't know what to expect - I have never seen a panini sandwich before. Once I realised it was a type of bun I became more enamoured of my new kitchen gadget. I have always wanted a way to toast sandwich-buns and this works perfectly. The sandwich press is a lot larger than I thought it would be - at approximately 30 cm by 27 cm by 4.5 cm (deep) it is around a third bigger than our old one.The "toaster" consists of 2 large, flat, non-stick trays. The bottom tray has a curved lip which is approximately 0.5 cm high, to help contain any overflow from the sandwich contents. My first doubt came when I discovered that there was no temperature control. I am used to being able to adjust the temperature in order to ensure that the filling is heated properly without burning the bread casing.I found that the toaster plates take longer to heat up than our old model, this may be due to the fact that they are so much bigger, however, it is only really a matter of a minute or 2 difference in timings. It has a ready-to-cook light on it so you know when it is up to heat. Once at full heat it is a matter of judging when you believe that your toastie is ready. This can be a hit and miss affair, but once you have the hang of timings things become a lot easier. There are certain foods that you don't want to be lukewarm, such as chicken, for safety reasons, so I would recommend that you test before you serve. The second issue I had was with the lack of a lid clip. On our old machine the lid is held in place by a clip so that the toasting is even. The toasting (so far) has been quite even, this may be due to the fact that the lid is on a pivot, or I may simply have been lucky, only time will tell.I would recommend that you clean the machine carefully with a damp cloth while it is still warm, as this makes it easier to get the overspill off the non-stick hot plates. The manual recommends waiting until the plates are cool before closing the machine and putting it away. It takes a long time for it to cool down so there is plenty of time for cleaning. The stainless steel shell can get a little warm, but not very hot, however I would recommend not moving the machine while it is in use, or cooling down, as you can singe your fingers by accident. There are non-slip feet on the bottom which adds to the safety of the machine and a wrap-around cord storage area, should you find that you don't need all of the cord that is provided. The open-close handle on the lid is heat resistant, so, as long as you don't get hold of the lid or the base directly, you shouldn't get burnt. There is no need to worry about the size of the machine taking up a large area of your workspace, as it folds (the lid locking into place by using a slide switch on the side) so that it can be stood on end. I have it stood between the cupboard and the toaster for storage, because, though it looks stable, I have a fear of it toppling over and damaging the worktop (but that is my problem). The best thing about making your own toasted sandwiches is that you are in control of what goes in them. If you don't like hot lettuce or tomatoes then you don't put them in, or if you fancy smoked salmon, Branston pickle and chocolate sauce then you have the freedom to have that without any strange looks from other people.Over the past few weeks of using this toastie maker I found that it is easy to use, to clean and (once I got use to the cooking times for the various buns and fillings) it makes great filled toasted buns. If you are looking for a sandwich press then I would recommend this one for your consideration.

Design:The Breville VST025 Sandwich Press has a very modern looking design, which looks great in my kitchen. It has a stylish stainless steel finish, and all mental construction, which feels very sturdy and strong. This sandwich press is also very lightweight and reasonably small in size. So it does not take up too much space in my kitchen and I can easily store it away in my cupboard when its not in use. The power cable can be wrapped around the back of the sandwich press neatly, and the lid is lockable for extra security. Also this sandwich press can stand up on its side or can be hanged by the handle (if you prefer).Features:The Breville VST025 Sandwich Press comes with a hinged lid, which can fit a range of different sized breads inside, with ease. Also you will be happy to know that you do not have to butter the outside of the bread, like you do with some other sandwich presses. As this sandwich press has a non-stick coated aluminium plates, so you bread should not stick to the plates. This sandwich press is suitable for toasting paninis, making toasted sandwiches, warming Naan breads and tortillas, cooking crumpets and toasting teacakes and bagels, so it's very versatile. On most websites, it says that this sandwich press can make up to three sandwiches at a time. But personally I would say it can fit 2 reasonable size sandwiches at a time.Performance:The Breville VST025 Sandwich Press came very well packaged and seems well made. And it is incredibly easy to set up and use. Although if you have any problems using this sandwich press, there is an included instruction manual, which is very easy to follow and understand. All you have to do is plug the sandwich in, and it will automatically turn on (there is no on/off switch). It takes around 2 minutes to fully heat up. However on the top of the sandwich press is a useful ready-to-cook indicator light, so you will know when the sandwich press is ready to start cooking on. Once this light turns green, you can pop your ingredients onto the sandwich press, and push the lid down, and within minutes you will have a delicious sandwich. Once you have finished, this sandwich press is incredibly easy to clean. Most of the time it just requires a wipe down with a paper towel or damp cloth. Sometimes when I'm making a cheese and bean toastie, the beans and cheese come out of the side, so then I need to give it a proper scrub after I've finished with it. It makes some lovely, delicious, evenly cooked toasties. The non-stick coating works amazingly, as absolutely no butter is required when toasting. And my food has never stuck to this sandwich press.Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and it is defiantly the best sandwich press I have ever tried.

I've been using one of these flat plate Breville sandwich toasters for going on 20 years. My parents own an older style one, which unfortunately I no longer had use of when I moved home. This type of toastie maker is so much better than the ones that squash your sandwich into triangle shapes. It's easy to move the sandwich around and put it on/remove it. Plus being flat plates it can be used to grill all sorts of food, not just cheesy sandwiches! This newer style is very similar to the older in functionality. It is a little lighter than before and slightly less robust, with more plastic used in the build. The hot plates are now slightly textured whereas before they were completely smooth (and prone to scratching).Performance is the same though.Simple, turn it on at the mains, wait for the green light to show then put whatever it is you want to cook on the plates. I've personally only used it for sandwiches but I know people successfully grill all sorts of food on it.The lid isn't "too" heavy. That is, if you like thick bread and prefer your sandwich at full thickness, the lid won't squash the sandwich too much if you just rest the top closed. Unfortunately, unlike the older model I've used, this doesn't have a moveable tab to hold the top plate up at different heights. The thing I love most about it though is that you can make a thick, loaded sandwich and apply pressure on the top plate to really flatten it out for thin and crisp toasties.Ignore reviews about it "not even melting the cheese in the sandwich". That's either a faulty unit, the unit not being used properly or very thick, robust bread being used.Cleaning is simple. Just wipe over with some folded up kitchen roll when the unit is still hot, to prevent anything drying on. After that a quick wipe over before storing keeps it clean. If you do let cheese harden on it, you can easily scrape off with a plastic spatula. As with the older units - there's also a little locking tab. It's not the most robust thing but it does the job of keeping it closed for convenient storage. It easily slips in a cupboard sideways so ideal even when space is at a premium.I only marked down the Durability in this case simply because compared to the 20 year old version I used before, it feels lighter and there is more plastic used, so doesn't feel as durable. Finally, my tips after years of using these style sandwich presses: Butter the outside of the sandwich. It's a little messy but will make the outside of the sandwich golden and crispy. Works just as well with lighter, healthy spreads as it does with full fat butter. Also only use plastic utensils to avoid scratching plates.

This is by far the best value for money toastie maker you'll buy. Don't buy a £10 tesco/wilko toastie machine, as although they are cheap, they won't last you long at all, the non stick coating will peel off into your food and they will be a real pain to clean. Here are several good reasons to invest a bit more cash into this superior product:Durability: I have now used this for a full 30 week term at uni almost every day and I can safely say it shows no signs of wear and tear at all. I still have a several year old Breville sandwich press at my parent's house which works just fine, although the non-stick coating is mostly gone (see notes). The hot plates are very easy to clean, all you really need is kitchen towel. No buttering of the outside of the toastie is necessary thanks to the non-stick coating. It's simple to use, all you have to do is plug it in and it turns on.The reason I bought this specific one is it has a FLAT SURFACE, which is very useful as you can toast almost any type of bread inside, regardless of dimensions (within reason). The power level is just right, so unless you have loads of ingredients inside, the cheese inside the toasty will melt well before the bread blackens. The non-stick coating doesn't come off like on other toastie machines, even after over a year of regular use, unlike cheaper models. There are two LEDs on the the machine; a red one, indicating when the machine is plugged in, and a green one, which turns on at a certain temperature. When your toastie is inside the machine and the light turns on, that means the plates, and therefore sandwhich, is roughly at the temperature where cheese melts [This is speculation, so don't take my word for it]. Therefore, this would usually means that the toastie is ready, but I would recommend keeping an eye on it, as you may like it lees or more cooked than recommended and this system isn't perfect.NOTE: different types of bread take different amounts of time to toast, and the ingredients also effect the time the toastie takes to cook. For this reason you must constantly supervise the toastie, checking every 30 seconds or so.Also, make sure that both plates are well in contact with the toastie whilst toasting by pressing the upper plate a bit with the handle. Most importantly, NEVER scrape the toastie off the plate using metal instruments of any type, as this will scratch the stick-proof coating, and therefore make it harder and harder to clean over time. The best time to clean the plates is around 10 minutes after use, as the plates are still warm and therefore even easier to clean.

I bought one of these machines for my step-son and his girlfriend as they had just moved into their first home. I wanted to buy them something I knew they'd use, but being in their early 20's who eat a lot of fast food I wanted equally to buy them something that would be relatively easy to use.Having read the reviews I opted for this one for them. As I read the reviews a light switched on in my head. Hey I thought my partner and I would use this we love toasted sandwiches and paninis. So I bought 2 obviously one for us.It is a fantastic machine! Really quick to heat up and easy to clean. However, let me give you a heads-up at this point. What's it like for sandwiches? Fine does just what is says. We've used it for sandwiches a couple of times but the thing that it is absolutely fantastic for is bacon it cooks almost as quickly as it takes to boil the kettle and butter the bread. We've even tried venison steaks we bought from Aldi I was unsure how to cook them in the first instance it said fry in a pan but didn't want to do that so I thought hey give it a go on this machine. They came out perfect as did a couple of sirloin steaks. Browned on the outside and perfectly cooked in the middle! Easy to clean, just wipe down. It's easier to clean whilst still warm, if it does go cold just switch it back on for a few seconds then wipe down.Only thing I would say though is if you do meat on it put some kitchen paper under to make cleaning your work surface a doddle too. Remember, this machine isn't primarily for cooking meat but it does such a fantastic job I can't help using it more for that LOL. So some drips on the worksurface is my fault not the machines! It's easier to clean than a grill pan. I even did some mushrooms on there yesterday to go on bacon sandwich then got really brave and chucked an egg on it. It was fine I let it cook a bit then closed the lid, this did burst the egg but I wanted it for a sandwich anyway so wanted it to burst. It was perfect. One other thing I did the other day was some king prawns for on top of a paella it cooked them perfect and literally in a minute. So for the money this is a brilliant addition to the kitchen, it folds up and locks then stands up between my microwave and husky so doesn't take any cupboard space up anyway. Remember though to only use plastic/wooden implements on it if you want to keep it pristine. As for sandwiches I'll let you know what they are like when I get round to using it for it's true intention LOL.

I have no hesitation in giving the Breville VST025 5 stars, because it is really good at what it does.I have long been a fan of toasties, but my old toasted sandwich maker used to languish in the back of the cupboard because it was horrible to clean, and would only take the square bread ... unless you resorted to surgery on your freshly baked bloomer ... and if you put more than a spoon full of filling in, it would bubble out of the side ... going back to point one.The Breville 25 has a largish flat plates that are easily big enough for slices of the big home made loaves we make, or 3 Paninis. a Ciabatta, or even half a dozen english muffins or crumpets. This means that my wife and I can actually sit down to our lunch of delicious toasties at the same time.Back to the machine, there are no switches or dials, you simply plug in, and when the green TEMP light goes off ... you are ready to cook. This takes just under 2 minuets, so if you switch on before you start to construct your favourite snack, it will be ready and waiting for you.Cooking time is down to taste but I find that most sandwiches are ready in less than 5 minutes, or when you hear things start to sizzle ... I have learned that having the filling at room temperature helps, (but not essential) as does keeping the slices of the individual fillings on the slim side. We have found that putting the cheese on top means that it has the chance to melt into the other ingredients ... although I have been know to go belt and braces and put cheese on the bottom deck too!My current favourite sandwich is smoked ham, emmental cheese, sliced red pepper and rocket ... bloomin delicious, and I would like to see you try and get that lot into one of the old toastie makers. We also have the bigger version of this panini press, the 26, and that model is would be the one to go for. for bigger families. My only minor gripe (not enough to cut the score) is the lead length is a bit on the short side ... another half a metre would be perfect. The sliding catch on side, to lock the plates together for storage is simple but effective. We have also used the Panini press to make omelettes, fried egg, to heat up garlic bread, naan bread, and mexican wraps. As for cleaning, and this is where I wish I could award bonus points, it is simplicity itself ... a quick wipe with a kitchen towel (best done whilst still warm). So, no hesitation in giving the highest possible rating for this versatile kitchen essential.

I have been lazy about writing reviews lately. Being a careful buyer, most stuff I buy online is already thoroughly researched, well considered and never disappoints as such, so there is seldom anything to write about. Half the times, I physically go and see a product at a high street retailer so that I know what to expect already. But every now and then, along comes a product which makes you jump up and say "WOW" in astonishment. This has been bought to replace your usual Morphy Richards 2 slice sandwich toaster that was bought from Powercity in Ireland over 2 years ago. That one was increasingly becoming a pain to use and clean, thus rendering it almost useless for most part. What is the point of making a sandwich and get few minutes of enjoyment when the cleaning afterwards takes hours and you still don't know for sure how much molten cheese has seeped into those impossible to reach crevices? So, I gave it away to a young student as a present, because frankly, as long as I had it, I would never have bought myself a new one. Then came the 3-4 days of thorough research, sifting through hundreds of reviews (and I always start reading the one star ones). Even at the time of finally clicking "BUY", I wasn't a 100% confident that I was making the right decision, then I thought, it isn't a million dollar decision after all, so why worry so much.I did have my apprehensions that this does not give those 'grill marks' like most other toasters, but that is its strength rather than weakness, believe me folks. Inch for inch, you get a more crisp surface on your toast.Ease of use and cleaning? This is where it scores top marks.....use it, wipe it, forget it. Takes exactly a minute to clean, no matter how much cheese has oozed on the plates. It is difficult to convince anyone how good a product this is, unless you actually see it in action, but believe me when I say, this will be one of those 'life-altering' products in your kitchen.Disregard the naysayers, just own one and live happily ever after. And oh, there is something suspicious about the speed with which it arrived. I think I ordered it late on a Saturday and Tuesday morning it was at my door. How on earth did Amazon manage such a fast delivery to Ireland, I am clueless!!! Did they also eject a passenger on the plane to make room for my toaster, like United Airlines? LMAO. The last bit is only a contemporary joke which might become irrelevant in time, but this toaster will not!

I bought this a few weeks ago and I still use it a lot. It heats up quickly, it toasts evenly, and although I haven't progressed beyond panini and pita it's been fine for both of those things with a variety of fillings. It is quite big on the outside because of the handle. Inside it comfortably fits two paninis or two pita breads. More than that and bits would be sticking out, maybe you could manage three pitas, but paninis? No way. They must have made special ones for the photos. However, the plates are completely flat (other than the lip around the edge) so there aren't annoying "guideline" ridges down the middle - you could toast one big thing or several small ones. It's certainly a lot more versatile than a sandwich toaster in that respect. It's a bit like a wok in that you don't need to wash it, a quick wipe down with a paper towel does the trick.I dithered between this and a "normal" sandwich toaster, and I am still unsure whether I made the best choice. The reason I bought this was because I misunderstood the concept of a lockable floating hinge. I thought it meant that you could lock the top plate into your chosen position while it cooks, which would make it possible to a) make cheese on toast and b) toast sandwiches without them being totally flattened (which is what sandwich presses do, the clue being in the name).Unfortunately for me, although "floating" does indeed mean that the top plate comes down horizontally (rather than being hinged, which would squash the back of your sandwich more than the front), all "lockable" means is that when you are not using it there's a little gizmo that holds it shut - the latter being something I could not care less about, I mean really, you're advertising this as an amazing special feature? - so although it's my own fault for incomprehension I was disappointed to find that "squash it flat" is indeed the only available option. Still, it's not as if I had to smash my toaster with a hammer in order to get this product.Anyhow, I don't regret buying it and I'm sure I will get my money's worth as the novelty has not worn off yet.

Sandwich toasters have come a long way since I were a lad. Well that's not entirely true as you can still buy the cheaper models that give you that triangular pattern on your toastie. However this Breville is more your "cafe" sized toastie maker, it's pretty big. This isn't actually a problem as in one go it will serve the entire family. You just need to remember that you'll need the space on a work surface and near a power point. It's very easy to use. Plug in and switch on and then simply wait for the green temperature light to extinguish and it's ready to cook (this doesn't take a very long time which is also great). The other fantastic benefit is that the metal plates are non-stick,which means you no longer have to butter the outside of your sandwich (a messy job most of the time). The metal plates are smooth and won't offer any grill lines but then who really cares about that (... *sob*).Once the sandwich or sandwiches are in you drop the lid and let it do its work. One set back with the toaster is the lack of an onboard timer which means you either have to check under the lid from time to time or set your oven timer. The cooking process takes around 5-8 minutes depending on what you're cooking. A simple sandwich will only take about 5 minutes but anything like focaccia bread or a pennini takes about 8 minutes.I tried mozzarella, tomato and chorizo sausage in focaccia bread and it produced exactly the kind of results you'd expected (nicely toasted bread, melted magma-like cheese and roasted tomatoes... yum). The whole family loved it. Regular taosties also taste fantastic with endless variations of ingredients.Cleaning is so easy because of the non-stick plates. Simply wait for the unit to cool (it really doesn't take all that long) and wipe clean with a cloth. That's it!I think if you love a good toasted sandwich and are looking for something that can do the family in one go, is easy to clean and produces great results then this is the one for you.I've reviewed quite a number of Breville products in the past and can attest to the quality of what they produce.

This is brilliant press, it has the power and heat in the plates to not only to do toasted sandwiches, but to do do a nice steak in about 3 minutes or up to 7 minutes if you like it well done. Switch it on with the lid closed and the both lights will light up, after a few minutes the fixed temperature light will go out letting you know the press is ready. Open lid place your sandwiches's ( up to 4 on the base plate) or your steaks, if your not using the full capacity of the press place them in the middle and close the lid ( which pivots ) allowing it to cope with doorstep sandwiches quite easily or odd thicknesses of meat. You don't need to press down on the lid, its quite heavy enough to toast your food to your liking. If you like your food biscuit texture then by all means use light pressure on the handle. You will notice during cooking the orange temperature light will cycle on and off, this is normal and not a problem. During cooking open lid every few minutes to see how your food is going and until its to your liking. I have had no problem cleaning the plates no matter what has been cooked, the way I do it is this, fold at least three sheets of kitchen roll together and have a hard spatula ready ( not metal ). If there is no spillage remove sandwich, switch off machine and immediately wipe both plates using the kitchen roll, take care remember its red hot and the lid moves on its pivot. if you have a spillage or have cooked meat, immediately after removing food use spatula upside down and scrape spillage to center and lift it from plates using spatula and wiping it on another piece of kitchen roll, switch off machine then using the pad of kitchen roll to wipe over and clean the plates. again be careful its hot and the lid swivels, its takes no prisoners it will burn you.

I bought this thinking it might not be very good as the price was so low ( I paid £30.44), how wrong was I. It's brilliant. It easily fits in four regular sliced toasted sandwiches, or four paninis. My main concern before buying this was how long it takes to heat up as a few other reviewers had said it takes a while, it doesn't, I timed it and it's 2 mins, toasted sandwiches take about 2-3 mins, so all in all a very quick sandwich.Okay it doesn't have a temperature control but it has a thermostat that keeps it at the perfect temperature, my toasties were perfectly cooked, nice and even. I tried one buttered and one not, and although both came out fine, the buttered one looked nicer, more shiney like a toastie whereas the other one looked just more like toast on the outside. This was really easy to clean, just a quick wipe, it's got a lip all the way round the bottom which is good as it holds any melted cheese in, I would of given this 5 stars had the grill plates been removable. My only other slight gripe would be that it does squash the toasties quite a bit so go for thick sliced, the thicker the better. All in all a very impressive sandwich toaster, perfect for a family, yes it's a bit bigger than some others but not so much as to put you off.Buy this, you won't be disappointed!UPDATE- 3 Months later...I want to up my star rating to 5 stars from 4!I still love this product, even more so as time has gone on, and the fact the grill plates are not removable does not matter as it's been so easy to keep clean.I love this product so much I've bought one to use in my tea garden (to replace an expensive Dualit product i ws using )and it has been a godsend, the toasted sandwiches are so quick and when 4 are done together the toasties don't get squashed at all.

I got totally fed up with the toasted sandwich makers that seal the edges.. they are fine for a while. but then the non stick starts to go quite quickly and they are then hell to clean. The thought of the cleaning effort then needed used to put me off using them.I was a bit sceptical about this and how well it would work, but decided to give one a try since even if it did not work too well for toasties, it looked like it would be good for panninis etc.It works pretty well. Just take a little care to place the toasties centrally so that the plates are parallel et voila! If you are too generous with the cheese then a bit can leak out, but I find far less leakage then with a toasties maker. It cleans up brilliantly, just a quick wipe needed.. and that is after about a year of regular use.It is also easy to toast all sorts of things since the plates are a decent size (approx 25cm x 29cm). It is big enough to do four full slice toasties at once. You can probably toast something up to about 7cm thick. Above that and the plates start to get more difficult to level out.... it may also take some time to heat through something that thick. There is a latch on the side of the handle, but that is only for when it is fully closed.. only really usable for when storing away. One thing that takes a little getting used to at first is that you just rest the lid on the top of what you are toasting (which seems to also help prevent the contents squishing out). The only down side is that when eating a toastie where there has been perhaps a bit too much cheese, it can be prone to dripping cheese since the edges are not sealed. So while a sealed edge maker may be better for a few months (until the non stick goes), this wins out in the longer run and is a lot more versatile.

I used to have one of those old breville sandwich toasters that crimped the edges of the bread and sealed all of the filling inside. I was looking for a replacement that did the same. This machine doesn't crimp the bread but it's superb and I'm glad I bought it.It's quite hard to see from the pictures, but the machine has a top and bottom hotplate, both of which are completely flat and covered in good non-stick coating. This makes the machine versatile because it can accept lots of different sized food, and easy to clean. I thought the lack of edge crimping would mean more mess, but if anything we get less mess than with the old crimping machine. The bottom plate has a small lip to stop any filling that may spill out of your sandwich from falling out of the machine. It heats up quickly (~ 1-2 mins?) and is usually ready to cook before I have had time to prepare the thing I'm cooking. The old machine used to need the bread buttering on the wrong side to stop it sticking, but I have never buttered anything in this machine as it is happy toasting things dry.I've used it to cook toasted sandwiches(2 fit in), panninis(3 fit in), tortillas (2 fit in when parceled up) with great success. It even toasts bread straight from frozen (given a couple of extra minutes). The storage lock that keeps the machine from falling apart when stored sideways is potentially upside down as others have mentioned, but it's not at all loose and I can't see any danger of it falling open unprovoked. Only slight criticism is that the machine doesn't quite sit flat when stored sideways and looks like it might fall over (although it never has).Overall a great buy. Would highly recommend to others looking for this type of machine.
