Bought this rotary dryer to replace a cheap shoddy DIY store dryer that didn't last that long. Interestingly, the Brabantia didn't cost that much more. I guess the DIY chains rely on buyer apathy rather than going on-line to find much better products at cheaper prices. I decided to buy on-line after reading the lengthy number of reviews on this product courtesy of Amazon. The Brabantia arrived by courier well packaged with clear simple for installation. The Lift-O-Matic (don't you love the name - so 1950's) is large. It's diameter, across the extended arms is three meters - that's ten feet in old money. So, you might want to check the area you where want to locate it is large enough.I located mine in the same spot as the old one but the Lift-O-Matic's footprint is much bigger. The Lift-O-Matic is very well made. It's central column is quite wide - twice that of my old dryer. Raising and lowering the Lift-O-Matic is very simple as there are a series of retaining holes all the way up the central column allowing the locking mechanism to be clipped into place to adjust the level of tension on the line according to the user's preference. Extending the arms via the column mechanism is simple and needs surprisingly little effort. The unit is covered by a five year guarantee which reflects the manufacturer's confidence in its product. One word of advice which other reviews don't seem to cover. The Lift-O-Matic comes with a ground spike that needs to be driven into the ground first. The spike is around forty five centimers long - eighteen inches. If your ground is hard, you'll need to make sure its well watered first to soften it up. Driving the spike into the ground gets progressively harder the deeper it goes. You will need a block of wood to cover the top part of the assembly and something like a lump hammer - an ordinary one won't do as it will be too light. Don't be tempted to hammer straight on to the metal assembly - you will damage it and the dryer's central column won't fit in the spike's central hole. Also, you will need to check you are driving the spike into the ground straight. Believe me, this isn't easy. I kept checking whether the central column was perpendicular with a spirit level until the spike was fully located. You don't want to find you have driven the spike all the way into the ground and find, when you locate the dryer that it is leaning to one side. The spike's internal hole for the central column is lined with plastic to prevent metal on metal contact - nice touch. It also comes with a bright red plug cover if you plan to remove the Lift-O-Matic for an extended period, say, over the winter - another nice touch. If I could give the Lift-O-Matic six out of five (homage to Spinal Tap), I would. It's a very well designed, well made product at a very reasonable price.

At risk of appearing ungracious this review may make my wife appear to be all the village idiots of Warwickshire rolled into one. Our experience with rotary driers has not been aweinspiring. My now wife, a lady obsessed with bargains and buying as cheaply as possible, bought the first, a green model, which was steel based and rusted away in one season I accept that she is not tall but even I was surprised when the replacement arrived it would have done justice to the shortest of Snow Whites dwarves. Not only did my wife have to go down onto her knees to hang the clothes but even the face flannels trailed on the ground. The third was an upgrade to aluminium and did work, except of course there were problems with the line but there was my father outlaw ever helpful restringing it, a loop in both his left and right hands and another in his teeth as he worked out what to pull next. Twice his false teeth shot across the lawn when with a jerk he pulled the wrong string. That model sadly I got caught on the sit upon lawn mower and snapped an arm off the spinner. Our penultimate model, another bargain of my wife's; aluminium indeed, so thin a gale force wind caught the wet sheets in a dervish whirl and snapped the shaft in a clean break. That took some force. Finally I said I will get the next one and got onto Amazon. It came, a Brabantia Lift O Matic rotary drier, sturdy, tall, individually strung, too big for its predecessor's hole in a neat lump of concrete, embedded in the lawn, I had to use the spike supplied which was a doddle to insert into the ground. Delivery was fast, the product as described and as I look at it spinning like a "good un" I almost feel a bond of affection because I have loved windmills since a child. Moreover with Amazon'z discounted price I got the real bargain, because when push comes to shove, every time my wife hangs out the washing, I walk past and whisper now that drier is quality. You only get what you pay for.

I got given this as a present from my wife for our 25th wedding anniversary (needless to say we don't have the most romantic of relationships) but I needed a new one and it saved me 75 quid so I can't complain. To be fair it is a very well made product, but has caused a lot of friction in the office, especially between Alison and Emily.Basically I was boasting about my new acquisition, as I am very proud of it, but it turns out that Alison has also just bought a new washing line, and being a cheapskate she went to Wilko and paid about forty quid. Before you knew it, Alison had hit the gin she keeps in her desk drawer, and started to develop what I can only describe as 'washing line envy'.The situation was not helped by Emily, who threw in the comment of 'you buy cheap you buy twice' (which does sum Alison up perfectly to be fair), but it certainly hit a nerve. Before anyone could intervene, Alison and Emily were really going at it, calling each other all the names under the sun, and neither are the type to back down.Emily was arguing that people are judged by their washing line, and so only the best will do, whilst Alison took the stance that everybody else is a washing line snob, and subsequently resorted to name calling and throwing her egg salad sandwiches at her.Emily responded by throwing her bottle of water at Alison, which missed and broke the screen on her computer. In the end I had to send them both home to cool off, and run the crematorium single handed for the rest of the day.I don't blame the washing line, as it was an innocent bystander to the whole incident but, in hindsight, I really wish I hadn't brought it into the office in the first place. In summation, I would definitely recommend this product, but would exercise caution when displaying it in public, especially if your neighbours are anything like Alison, in which case I would consider moving house pronto.

This may be the most unexpectedly amazing product I have ever purchased, from Amazon or anywhere else. Before I explain why I'll tackle the mundane first: As a rotary dryer this is great. It's easy to fix in place, the ground spike works really well (despite some difficulty finding a rock-free bit of the ground to hammer it into, something that's not really Brabantia's responsibility), it holds a huge amount of washing - at least 3 full loads from a 9kg capacity machine, and packs away simply and reliably. All good. The *MAGIC* comes from the amazing way that every single time I put it up and put wet washing out on it... it makes it rain! Without fail!! Sometimes it takes an hour, sometimes 4 hours, but it always rains with 100% reliability! At first I thought this was just coincidence and a predictable effect of living in the North of England. However the proof is in the second part of the *MAGIC* - every time the dryer causes the rain to fall I rush outside and take the washing in and hang it up inside. And then, without exception, it stops raining. As with the onset of the magic rain it's a little bit unpredictable regarding timescale - sometimes it happens instantly, sometimes 20 minutes or more are required, but it always stops raining long before the washing has dried.I honestly think Brabantia and Amazon are missing a trick by advertising this as a humble laundry dryer, when they could be selling it to farmers, gardeners, drought-ridden nations and meteorological study centres the world over.Suffice to say I am somewhat ambivalent towards this product. On the one hand my clothes never get dry on it, but on the other side I now own a device that circumvents the legendary unpredictability of the British weather. If I could give it both 1 star and 9 stars at the same time I would.

I installed the spike, but with some difficulty.Tools:* Sledgehammer* Crowbar* water* Ice axe (or any long, narrow but substantial pointy thing-- see below)* Two-way spirit level (To check for vertical)* steel tube (around 15mm diameter)* Rod to clean steel tubeMethod* Identify good location.* Tap steel tube into ground an inch or so* Remove tube; Clean core of soil out of tube* Repeat multiple times, creating hole almost large enough to take the main body of the spike.* Periodically insert spike loosely into hole, check for verticality; remove spike* Repeat until the hole is around 3/4 of the required depth (around 30cm).* Optionally, use water to soften soil to aid digging.* If at any point you encounter a stone or rock, use pick/crowbar/Ice axe to remove/smash/move said stone.* When the hole is around 30cm deep, break up the material at the bottom of the hole using a pick or ice axe.* Insert spike loosely; check for verticality.* cover top of spike with substantial wood blank.* Tap a few times with sledge* Check for verticality.* if necessary force soil down the sides of the hole to restore verticality.* Replace blank; hit with sledge* check for verticality; adjust if necessary.* Replace blank; Belt it hard with sledge a couple of times.* Pray that it is still vertical.* Replace blank, belt with sledge until spike is buried correctly.Have a drink.Alternatively, dig a big-ish hole, and use concrete to set the thing in.Good luck!Edit - after writing this review, I found this item on Amazon. I'e not tried it, but the reviews look good!https://www.amazon.co.uk/Stainless-Planters-Accessories-Vegetable-Planting/dp/B07RXB2779/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=garden+auger+45mm&qid=1595865219&s=industrial&sr=1-4

After several years of use I had to replace on old green rotary dryer which was already in place when we moved in a number of years ago. My mother used a Lift-O-Matic and I thought that would be best as it is possible to change the hight when needed. For some of the bedding or the rather long bath towels I like the rotary dryer just a little bit higher so that the washing does not brush the lawn. The thing to bear in mind when replacing any old dryer is that the diameter of the pole could be different. I was able to pull the plastic sleeve out of the concrete with no problems (alternatively it is wise to carefully measure the diameter) and took it with me to a store. It fitted the Brabantia rotary dryer perfectly,so that was reassuring but as it was more expensive in the store and rather long to transport in the car, I decided to order from amazon. No regrets. It is well made, the washing lines are not hanging in bows but always straight, it is a one hand operation to open it up like an umbrella, it is very lightweight and so we remove it for the winter season and place it in the garden shed, it is a very sturdy and strong construction which has coped with some very strong winds since we bought it last year. And because you can set the Lift-O-Matic to your own preferred height and can adjust this by moving the umbrella up or down inch-by-inch this is perfect for someone smaller, or when you want to air a heavy duvet on top of the structure. I do recommend to buy the Brabantia cover for it at the same time, to keep it always clean. Excellent buy!

A well made washing line......easy to alter the height. You can have it at it highest point...or perhaps if you are shorter have it lower with all the lines still tight.Time will tell how it weathers ... but we will take it down when not in use and store it in the garage just a few yards away.it is important to protect these lines in the winter as they will suffer if not covered one way or another.2 criticisms1.The long "grass spike " will not penetrate my current lawn even with a 6lb sledge hammer and a protective bit of wood across the top I couldn't get in in more than 4 inches ( an the spike is approx. 15 ins long). The joys of solid clay under grass.I dug a hole 10 inches square to the right depththen bought a bag of quick setting "postcrete" followed the instructions.( trowel in the dry mix then add water.....simple) I have a special level for posts which clips to any upright pole or post gives you 3 readings at once and making sure it is perfectly upright. I held it upright for 5 minutes while the super fast post crete went off then I dressed the area at the surface around the pole with small pebbles.2. When the line is removed there is a simple plastic stopper for the ground spike to stop rain etc entering it. But why is it bright red? Green.......even black....but who wants a red dot on the middle of the lawn ? If you set it at the right height you don't have to draw attention to it. With the mower going over the top of the cap you don't really need to know its there.

Purchased this item to replace an aging and falling apart line we'd had for years. Before I ordered it I was keen to ensure the new line I bought would fit the mounting hole I had already installed for the old line. I had previously bought a line but the pole was of a larger diameter to the mounting pole I had cemented into the ground so I took it back.I found the Brabantia line was one of few that specified the diameter of the pole so I could check it would fit before I ordered it rather than take a gamble it may or may not as I really didn't want to dig out the old mount and install/cement a new one into place. The line is quite heavy but it is so sturdy, the build quality (as you would expect from this brand)is brilliant. The line is very easy to lift into position the lift-o-matic mechanism makes it a doddle to raise it to the correct height.I am especially impressed that each line is an individual line rather than a continuously wound line through the arms that you get on so many rotary lines, this makes repairing any damaged line so much easier and removes the need to replace the entire line or whole system in the event of a break. The line space is plenty for our needs at 50m we have had 4/5 wash loads on it without issue, in fact we ran out of pegs before we ran out of line.It is also supplied with a ground spike that is pretty hefty if required.I'd recommend this product, it's not the cheapest you'll get but it really is very well made and of a high quality.

Brabantia are never cheap, but they usually make a strong, well engineered product that looks as if it will last. And this dryer is no exception. It comes complete with a ground spike, but I found it would also fit the socket of my previous dryer, so I'm keeping it in reserve. There are some well thought out features. Both the top and bottom arm brackets can be positioned up and down the pole. Move them apart or together and the dryer folds up or erects as in all other makes and models, move them both in the same direction and you can set the height of the whole arm assembly above the ground. The line is in individual sections, one per turn, and it looks as if it will make repairs much easier should they be needed; other makes use a single length of line in a spiral which is always difficult to adjust to get all arms level and all line spans reasonably taught. It has a surprisingly long length of line, and in my case it replaces a slightly smaller 3-arm model (different make) and a length of line strung between the house and a shed.6 months later.Another excellent design feature. Because each turn of the line is a separate piece of rope, and after some use they inevitably stretch slightly and go slack, they can be re-tensioned just by moving the two arm brackets a notch closer together, thereby spreading the arms a bit. The lines will slide through their holes and take up the tension evenly - try doing that with a dryer strung with one continuous piece of line.

I used the dryer yesterday for the first time. I'm delighted with my purchase, this is a very roomy dryer with loads of hanging space. Its very easy to put up and just glides to the position you require. You do need to make sure you have plenty of room for the dryer to avoid walls, fences and such like as it is very large, which is exactly what I wanted. I also received a cover with the dryer, but unfortunately this was faulty in that there was a split at the side of the zip where the stitching had not caught. I emailed Amazon and within 30 minutes received a call to discuss the problem, very impressed with the speed at which they dealt with this. I did not want to have to send the whole order back just for the sake of the cover, especially in view of the length of time it took to deliver it, so accepted a refund to cover the cost of a new cover. Took quite a long time for my dryer to arrive although within the time specified. Amazon tend to tell you it will be a couple of weeks and your order usually arrives within 3/4 days but on this occasion it did take a couple of weeks. It was great to get a metal spike with the dryer, which does not require cementing in according to the instructions. We decided we would use the spike without cementing it in and see how it went, if we find movement we will cement at a later date. On the whole extremely happy with the purchase and would recommend to anybody looking for a solid built quality family dryer.

So I bought this due to not having a washing line at all at my new house and with the great weather we've had recently I've been itching to get a washing out, our garden has yet to be completed but I couldn't wait any longer! As soon as it arrived last Thursday I unboxed it and built it up and washing out straight away. It's very strong looking and so easy to use, us can literally use 2 fingers to push it up to the right height. The lines themselves are fab, not much sagging and I found if they do I just close it down and open it again to find nice taught lines. Very simple. Only thing I would say it that when it's closed there's nothing to keep the arms in place so you must use the cover at all times but that's fine with me as it looks neater. The pegs that come with this are wooden and there's not many of them. I use my old ones. I'm a bit ocd and don't like to mix and match them lol. The peg bag is great, I have one that ties around my waist and two pockets which is fab but looking a bit tatty now so this peg bag is great, you can clip it to the line if you wish or if your like me you find an alternative place ie on your jeans where you would put your belt through lol it holds about 100 pegs and has a drawstring to. Bonus. It's a bit pricey but you do get what you pay for. I had 3 10kg loads of washing on at once and strong enough to take he weight and they weren't all cramped. Great for busy households!

I notice a few reviewers have complained about the ground spike. It IS quite difficult, but nevertheless I think it is actually a good design - when it is banged fully home it is incredibly secure. You need a decent (heavy) club hammer - NOT a regular hammer for banging in nails (that is probably why some reviewers have struggled); and a decent bit of wood (I used an offcut of 2x4) to protect the top of the spike while hammering it into the ground.Obviously try and bang it in vertically. But when you have got it about a quarter of the way in, have a look at it (stand back from it) and check to see if it still looks vertical. At that point it is still possible to alter it's trajectory.Mine wasn't quite straight so I used another bit of wood to lean against it to make it go vertical. Then continue banging. Once it gets over half way in, you are not going to be able to alter it, so in my opinion it is down to the competence of the person doing it. You need someone 'handy' at these types of jobs and a club hammer to be able to do it properly. (And probably a bloke to be honest as it's fairly hard work, even with the club hammer). Then once it's done it's done properly for ever. The dryer itself is nicely made as others have stated. However, the arms are slightly more flimsy than I expected from reading other reviews, so for that - and the fact I think it IS a bit on the costly side, I've given it 4 stars.

I was dubious about getting a rotary drier as I have always had a line but when ours had to go this seemed a good idea. We bought the larger drier - 60m? - and there is so much hanging space, more than I really need. It would probably fit about four loads of washing on at a time (though unless it was a super sunny day it might not all dry evenly). I tend to only do a couple of loads at a time and as such there is room to space items apart to get some air in between. We used the spiky thing to go in the ground - we have not bothered to cement it in - and so far, so good. I tend to take it in each night so it doesn't weather so soon.I noticed today that one side of the lines has slackened off a little - I can't tell how this has happened as they are all individually strung. This doesn't affect the performance at all though.I am really pleased with this purchase. It was quite pricey but I expect it to last a long time (especially as we are not leaving it out all the time,The only slight annoyance is that one of the black bits from the end of one arm is missing. I had read other reviews that mentioned this and questioned the delivery person but he had no idea where it was. There are three others on the other arms but they are useful as you can hook things on through the little hole. Never mind. Over all, brilliant. Thank you, Brabantia.

I bought this item recently and the on the whole I think it is very good but lacks any usage instructions. I had to contact Brabantia to query why I was not able to adjust the height past the first 10 or so holes and also why my product was missing the clothes hanger hooks at the ends of each arm as shown on their website. Brabantia advised that adjustment past the mid-point was not possible however the top section could also be adjusted up and down, hence why there were extra holes (instructions would have been useful for that then since I did not know about this). As for the missing clothes hanger hooks they advised that I had been sold 'OLD STOCK' and the product had recently been improved,HUH!!!!!!! Hope that doesn't mean mine is inferior?! They did say I could request an exchange under the 1st years warranty but have not bothered with that as it would have meant returning it to the supplier here at Amazon.I would have given this product 5 stars but marked it down on price. Had it included a free cover maybe it would have been better. Also the difficulty I had inserting the ground spike despite having thoroughly soaked the lawn several hours beforehand. Also the locking catch looks very flimsy and weak and unlikely to stand the test of time. Thankfully this item is available as a spare on the Brabantia website (I wonder why)!?

I have wanted one of these for a while and it didn't disappoint. It works really well in our garden. Thanks to our clay soil, and with some difficulty, we managed to hammer in the spike and it's working. It's not quite upright (it was almost impossible to get in absolutely vertical)but the dryer is working fine - spinning a little. The 50m would easily take 3-4 loads of our machine. As others have said, the lines are a little loose but there are instructions on how to tighten them - I haven't as it's not a problem for me.Why not a 5? I'm being really picky here ... the tie is a little flimsy and I think it won't last, ditto the 'plug' for the spike. Also,I've not found out yet how to put it up and down without hitting my head on the arms and/or wrapping the cords round my neck! This is probably the same with any dryer. Also the cover is quite thin. The dryer fell over the day I got it, it caught lightly on a nail and punctured easily in a few places - it's not that robust. Those minor grumbles aside (worth a half star off rather than a whole one) I'm really pleased with it, and how quickly I can get washing dry on it. The dryer itself is robust, and it's also not too long or heavy, so I've been easily able to move it in and out the house when I want to use it, and so don't have it as a blot on my landscape when I don't need it.
