It's a great strimmer in every respect except for one big problem, which was why I originally gave this ONE star. .Why? Well, after two decent but not outrageously arduous strims the cord ran out. Trying to put new cord into the strimmer spool with NO guidance from the manual (or the internet) was a nightmare. I tried twice with 1.5mm nylon line and, cut a long story short, both times the gubbins eviscerated itself within 5 seconds and I ended up picking up little strips of line varying in length from 1mm to 20mm all over that patch of the garden!BUT, here's how you do it: Remove red cap to access spool. Pull out spool. There are two layers, one for each line. Take a 70cm length of 1.5mm nylon line.Notice that the central shaft of the spool has two little holes, one on each level. Insert your line into the TOP hole and feed it in, [1 cm or so?] Then, now that it's anchored, wind your line in the direction of the arrows [important as there's a ratchet system and this will feed the line OUTwards]. Keep winding. At the top of the spool there are two notches, and another two on the other side. Take the last 15 cm of line and feed it up through one notch and down through the next. This holds it all in place while you repeat the process for a second length of line on the bottom level. You should now have a spool with two pieces of line sticking out. Feed them through the two silvery metal 'eyes' of the outer sleeve and click the spool down into place. Fix the red cover back on and off you go! :-)[Legal disclaimer: If this goes wrong you're on your own! But it worked for me :-) ]

I've never had an electric hedge trimmer before but it's a hell of an upgrade from a pair of pruning shears! It took minutes to accomplish a job I was painstakingly completing in hours and the result was more even and tidier. I wish I'd bought one years ago. For something so heavy duty it's capable of quite refined cutting as long as you skim it over the surface rather than trying to take off too much in one go. I found it best to use it across the whole surface of the plant in sweeping arcs, the constant movement also meant I was changing position regularly and it was less tiring as it's quite heavy to wield although the weight is well balanced. However, I found it much less tiring than using shears.I opted for the corded variety because in my experience most cordless devices run out of juice quite quickly unless they're very expensive or you have purchased several batteries for back up. I can see myself using this more often than the shears and thereby keeping the boundary planting at bay instead of letting it get to the point where I'm losing precious space in a small yard. The cord didn't represent a problem, tending to dangle downward away from the trimmer but I did buy an RCD safety adaptor at the same time so if I did cut through the cord I wouldn't be electrocuted

Great for the price, easy to set up and use, however still has the problem with the cable release system, as commonly found on all these automated release cable bush cutters. A better brand that doesn't melt (the cable that comes with it fuses together and causes problems separating). A shorter cable also reduces this problem. The over body strap balances the unit well, and this is important when using the trimmer for more than 40 minutes as the unit becomes heavier in use and causes fatigue. The power cable is shockingly short. I wonder if this was deliberate so that you would buy the wireless version (selling at almost 3 times the price). A simple reel power extension cable remedies this, but it's just extra work. One thing though, with the amount of time wasted on resetting the trimmer cutting cable, the location of the power cable hinders holding the unit upright as such you need to balance the trimmer on a large flat surface (such as the lawn) and bend down to fix the cutting cables each time, which makes a tiresome job more tiring. It try to score it 3.5 out of 5, but as you can't award a half star, I've rounded up to 4.

I bought this in desperation having tried and failed to get our petrol strimmer going and the weeds and brambles were out of control. I selected this model even though it was very new to the market and there was only one review at the time as it was claimed to be heavy duty. I was very pleased with the power of it which overcame the obvious inconvenience of an extension cable to haul around a large garden. My one single disappointment was the "bump & feed" business end. The line itself has a maximum diameter of 1.6 cm - not very thick and wears down quickly but the main problem is getting it wound evenly which is fiddly, time consuming and not successful 9 times out of 10.This is not specific to Bosch or this model. I just think it's a shame when there are more user friendly and simpler designs out there that Bosch has not offered an alternative accessory. There may be some universal heads that will fit the bill but I would need to do some research and meanwhile I need to keep on top of the gardening. That aside I am very pleased I bought this strimmer and would recommend it for anyone considering buying one.

After lots of research I decided to purchase the Bosch hedge trimmer with 45cm blade and I am pleased I did. It is a great trimmer - 45cm cuts a really large area in one go. I did debate the 60cm blade but having used the 45 cm one, I do wonder if the extra length would have made it slightly unweildy. One of the main things is that this unit is light enough to be able to handle. The blades are sharp, really sharp, and make light work of the hedges. Being electric, it is a little bit quieter than a petrol version and you don't have to worry about running out of fuel half way through the job.I found the cable to be long enough for my needs as I plugged the trimmer into an extension lead. The trimmer cable is bright red and really stands out against the green of the hedges so will reduce the likelihood of cutting through the cable. It has definitely sped up the trimming of the hedges and made the end result neater and more professional looking. If you register the product online, you get a 3 year warranty which really gives peace of mind. If you are debating this unit.... go for it!

Bought a bog-standard hedgecutter (not this make) when I first got married, was so frightened of the thing, sold it to my Dad. I now realise it was because they were too long and unwieldily. Now all these years later I went for this 'shorter' version, having worked out by practicing with a length of timber about the same size, that it needed to be the right size for my arms, which these are.Got them out of the box and set about drastically reducing the size of an overgrown vine that's covering a fence. Verdict: amazing! Very easy to use, a great step-up from the mini-hedgecutter. I wore eye-shields and ear defenders and finished the job in about 20 minutes, and that was only because I had to keep climbing up and down the ladder. Its this kind of job that would have taken me about a week with manual shears, for example. Very pleased how it can mince through quite thick, woody stems in a jiffy. Flower bed's a lot brighter now as a result. Very pleased with this purchase.Glad they're mains supplied, as you need no time restrictions for jobs that cover several square yards...

I'm a beginner at this kind of gardening, but in our new garden I needed to do some heavy remodeling after the previous tenant let it go wild.As soon as the hedge cutter arrived with his compact sturdy box, I've plugged it in and I faced the first problem. The cord is too short (around 10m I'd say).I was nicely surprised about the plastic cover that keeps the blade safe when the trimmer is not in use. After retrieving a cable reel I was good to go. Some plants are cut like butter, but if they hide some thicker branches, you'll feel it!I'd say the 16mm thick ones are really the limit.Lots of vibrations coming from the motor and once you'll turn it off, you really will have a strange feeling in your hands.Even if it's a 420w motor,it's still quite quiet (on the box it says 92dB), and with a 2.5kg weight it's alright for shorts jobs. You need 2 hands to start cutting; one holding the pad under the handle, and the other pushing the pad at the base of the blade.I'd say it's well balanced.Do wear gloves when using it and some glasses for protection!

For year's I've been borrowing my next-door neighbour's cordless hedge trimmer to trim my side of our common hedge, but it's got very old and tired, so I thought I'd take the turn to get a new one. This is very good value for money. It's just the right size for our smallish privet hedge, extremely well balanced, quite light in weight and easy to use. The very first time I used it, the hedge was rather overgrown, so the half-hour's task was quite tiring, but regular trimming will be much easier. The only complaint I have about the Bosch AHS 45-16 has to do with its lead. This is permanently attached to the tool (unlike some, which have a plug attachment at the tool end),and is distinctly shorter than the leads to my other garden tools (lawn mower, leaf blower/vacuum, etc.). I can just reach the whole side of our hedge (with an extension lead), but not the end by the pavement. If Bosch had provided either a detachable lead or a full-length one, I'd give this five stars; as it is, I can only give it four.

I got this to replace an old Flymo strimmer/edger. It is more sophisticated than the old one but there are drawbacks, not least, that you need to get the wheel attachment which is sold separately in order to make this easier to manoeuvre.I didn't have too much trouble with it strimming but edging is a different matter and it is quite difficult to do without the wheel. I got that from another site for around £18 so take that into consideration when looking at the price of this compared with others. For some reason, Bosch seems to be doing this more often.Having said that, this cuts a lot better than the old one so one you get the handling sorted the results are excellent.Height adjusted and lightweight which are all important. I also prefer items with a power cable than having to remember to charge batteries. That also avoids problems others have noted these days that battery powered items being sold without batteries or chargers which is even worse than this case of needing a wheel attachment.

I have had the idea of buying a Hedgecutter on the back-burner for years, and now at almost 70 years of age, using the shears and hedge clippershas become more of a chore than it needed to be, with resulting aches andpains, so it made sense to buy this product by Bosch, a well respectedmanufacturer. This model, the Bosch AHS 45-16 is lightweight and ideal for keeping privetand box hedges in trim. This particular model comes with a 45cm or 18 inch blade and has a 16mmopening between the cutting teeth, making it ideal for hedges that are nottoo thick in the stem.It will also cut back the lighter growth on fruit bushes such as blackcurrantand gooseberry. The soft grip handle and the fact that it isnot too heavy is a bonus.Comes with a 6 metre cable.I found it a worthy purchase and would recommend it to senior citizens wholike myself, may not wish to struggle with heavier tools.

Bought this to tackle a garden that had been neglected for some time. I have what I would see as a medium sized garden and the area strimmed featured waist high grass and various brambles and weed. This thing did the job, but at times, especially when used to a low level in the brambles you could hear the motor struggling, the solution is just to make sure you move the strimmer slower through the brambles.Only issue I had was the strimmer line broke on the first day of use, I would probably put this down to me basically cutting my entire garden of brambles in one go and somewhat abusing it by trying to strim through thick brambles 1/4 inch wide. Now that said I do think the strim line could clearly be made with a stronger material as I wasn't expecting it to give up so quickly, got about 90% of the 10x8m garden done and then ordered replacement chord.

OK so "A cut above the rest" is a bit of a corny title. It has to be said its true. This Bosch Hedge cutter is just great and I find it hard to criticize its design or capability to do the job it was intended for. I have never owned a electric cutter before, thought I could make a much nicer job of trimming the few bushes I have in my garden. Its fairly light to handle, cuts with ease and used with care very safe. I nearly purchased a much inferior make and even looked at 2nd hand, but with Amazons amazing deals buying new was only a few pounds more. I Would recommend this cutter as I would be surprised if you could get any better results by paying more.A few reviews comment the cable is to short but I found this not to be a problem when using a extension reel. Don't wait 18 years like me to buy one, buy with Bosch confidence today.

Bought this to make my gardening easier as we have a number of bushes that had started to get a bit out of control.Works well, and has no problem cutting through small bush branches (maybe 5mm or slightly more). Have had it cut through 1cm but had to persist and it probably isn't good for the blade. This loses a star because it isn't particularly comfortable to hold for extended periods. It isn't a natural position I don't think. You have to hold down two buttons to operate it (safety feature) - I am right-handed, and hold the rear handle with my left, and the front handle with my right so I can steer/apply pressure etc. It would be nice it the front switch locked "on" as that would make it so much easier, but I understand why it doesn't.

Got this to use on hedge and another assorted plants in the garden.Very pleased with it. First impression is that it's nice and lightweight - which is obviously very important for long sections of hedge, especially anything that is quite high up, as you can be holding it above your hedge for a long period of time. So it scores well on that front. The trimming blade seems a good size - I feel if it was longer it would be unwieldy, but shorter would be too short, so happy with the size. The mechanism seems powerful enough too - made very short work of a leylandii in our back garden, but also of some heavier duty bushes that were growing against a wall - so it's capable of more than just basic hedges. In summary, highly recommended.

Very impressed indeed with the performance of this hedge cutter. I've used many different types from petrol to cordless and electric, also many different brands and I would say this is the best. I find it's not too heavy and it's compact and balanced, the blade isn't too long. Reasonable length of lead but obviously an extension lead will be needed in most cases. I have a 100 foot garden with 5 large fir trees along one side cut like a hedge, I have just used the cutter and it has taken me 15 minutes to trim and tidy up the untidy bits sprouting out of the trees ( I was just quoted £240 for someone to do this for me), needless to say I'm very impressed with this tool and strongly recommend it.Great value for money.
