We have several different varieties of Nerf gun in our household but had never before heard of BOOMco so we were really pleased to be able to give this Stealth Ambush Blaster Gun a bit of a workout. As usual with this type of product there seems to be a LOT of packaging which always seems a little wasteful. However it was, at least, relatively simple to get the gun out of the packaging and to get up and running. The instructions, (which we read because we were not familiar with this brand and how it works), were fairly clear and it only took a few minutes before both sons were happily using the gun.The main clip in the gun holds 8 darts and you can rapidly fire these one after another and one thing that I,as a parent, really like about this gun is the absence of batteries, (hurray!). The side storages hold 6 darts and are deemed quite useful. There is a shield that opens up at the front of the gun which makes it look a bit meaner and is good for blocking shots. However, I am a little unsure as to how long these will continue to clip down successfully as the clips don't seem that substantial. A minor gripe that the kids had with this was that you had to have the shield up in order to reload the main clip, but in its defense regarding both the last points, you can completely remove the shield if it's not required just by sliding it off.My sons favourite part is the secret attack mode, ("surprise blast"), which pops up a secret chamber on the top and instantly fires 3 darts. This is unlike anything else that we've previously come across. This gun also came with a target with a sticky back which they recommend you don't stick onto furniture etc in case of damage. I therefore stuck it onto a window...then thought that perhaps I should try removing it just to see. Erm...no chance! I've left it on for now as it was leaving behind a massive sticky mess but I am faced with having to remove that at some point which I'm really not looking forward to! The darts for this gun have a sticky end which stick really well to the target, (it's actually quite hard to get them off sometimes), but don't stick to anything else that we've yet fired them at. When they begin to lose their stick apparently you can just run them under the tap to refresh them. Sadly these darts are quite a different size to Nerf darts so our amassed Nerf ammunition is no use here.Overall we've been pleasantly surprised by this BOOMco gun and would recommend it.

This is a great piece of fun, once I was through with it I even let the resident 11 year old have a go!The gun is quite substantial of size but also pretty lightweight for kids. It is, for the most part, pretty robust feeling, although the shields feel a little flimsy and don't always clip down easily. The gun comes with 17 darts which are, rather cleverly, tipped with a material that will only stick (very well) to the supplied targets and not much else, they also stay clean this way too.It is easy to learn to use thanks to an illustrated instruction sheet. 8 darts can be fed into the clip and a further three into the "surprise attack" launcher on the top.The darts themselves launch at animpressive velocity and will easily cover a large room (not sure if the claim of "70 feet" on the box quite holds up though). For that reason, I'm not sure how comfortable I would be with kids firing this at each other. It certainly doesn't hurt taking a body shot but eye protection would be an essential as the darts still pack a fair wallop! The pop up shield seems like a bit of a gimmick and gets slightly in the way of aiming but, fortunately, it can be removed easily. You won't get a lot of accuracy with this really, a lot seems to depend on luck. A case of pointing it in the right direction and hoping for the best. The "surprise attack" is particularly scattershot but rather fun to watch! All in all, it's good fun and I only have two niggles with the design. On my model, at least, the clip doesn't always fully empty with one dart being left stuck in the gun. Also the "surprise launcher" has a habit of popping back up after being primed so one has to keep a hand pressing down on it when pulling back the primer. It also seems a tad pricey (especially for the sort of toy where the novelty may soon wear off), but then, most toys seem overpriced to me these days! One I know is, when I was a little boy, I had one of those spring-loaded guns that fired suction darts and I loved it. This then, would probably seem like the most incredible toy ever to my younger self! (Which is why I got this mostly for myself but, shhh, don't tell anyone..

I recently tried out another BOOMco gun, the Rapid Madness, and it was a huge disappointment. I wasn't sure whether to expend the effort of testing another from their range but to be honest, I'm glad I did as this has redeemed BOOMco slightly in my eyes (and in the eyes of my six-year-old son).Included in the box is the gun itself, magazine and (I think) seventeen darts. The magazine is easy to load and this particular gun has a couple of hidden storage areas and hidden launcher on the back which is also easy to load. This gun offers a pretty rapid rate off fire without the need for batteries and that's a good thing. At first I thought it was a slam fire gun, rewarding brute strength with the longest shot but actually there's a more sophisticated mechanism hidden within, offering consistently long-range shots. This gun's unique selling point is the hidden weapon angle and it is pretty cool. With the flick of a switch and a pump on the action, the back of the gun pops up and spits out three darts simultaneously, again at good range. This is a clever little touch and one that my son particularly likes, so points there for design. In my opinion, BOOMco's biggest advantage over Nerf is their sticky darts and targets, an aspect that I really like. The darts (as far as I can tell, anyway) will only stick to things they're supposed to stick to (the included target, or the shields on other BOOMco guns). They seem to have applied a bit of science to good effect in this department, and it adds to the fun (although the included target is way too small to hit at more than about ten paces, especially with the pump action).Anyway, I like this. The 20-dart magazine from the Rapid Madness fits this gun too, and I suspect the full range will be compatible in this way (although I've not tested). I do still prefer Nerf, having just tried the new Demolisher, but with this offering, BOOMco aren't too far behind, and a bit of competition can only be good news for the army of back-yard warriors (and their sons)!

I've previously tried the BOOMco Rapid Madness Blaster, which I found to be a lot of fun. The Stealth Ambush blaster is equally fun, but in a mini deathmatch around my garden, the increased number of darts that the Rapid Madness Blaster was able to shoot made that the superior gun up close, but the Stealth Ambush Blaster was able to achieve more range and has the neat pop-up triple shot feature.Other than that, the family resemblence between the two guns is clear. Build quality is on a par with Nerf, maybe slightly better. The colour scheme used is pleasing and the gun feels substantial without being too heavy. The darts are very similar to the Rapid, but are a different colour to allow easy identification.A nice touch. The can come as a bit of a surprise as they are plastic tubes with a rubbery tip that sticks to some surfaces, especially BOOMCo targets and sheild surfaces. (They REALLY stick well to the special surfaces and took some careful peeling off.) The magazine takes 8 rounds, and they are quick and easy to to fit. When the magazine is full, it slots into the gun with a positive-sounding click, and I found the Stealth had the same issues where sometimes didn't push it in far enough, and other times too far so it didn't fire the first dart, though to a lesser degree than the Rapid. The gun is pneaumatic, but fires one round per pump, rather like a wacky pump-action shotgun without a trigger. In use it's satisfying and gives better range than the Rapid though obviously lacks the extra darts and rapid fire. The pop-up triple blaster is quite powerful and works well, surprising the victim with three darts fired quite powerfully, though in battle, the Rapid is a much more useful weapon and was the preferred choice. The greater power of the Stealth makes it quite fun as a target gun, but if you're going to shoot each other, the Rapid is the one to go for.

We have a lot of Nerf guns in the house (I'd give most of the Nerf range 4 stars) but this gun feels like a real step up in turns of shooting capability and age range. I think this would be best suited at 10+ age range with Nerf guns being safer and more age appropriate for primary school aged children. The darts/ bullets are thinner and harder than their Nerf counterparts and have a solid plastic end - none of that soft foam cushioning you get with Nerf. This makes them easier to load, fire and they travel further with more accuracy but Owwww they hurt more. There isn't a trigger to pull with this gun - there's a click forward and backward crunch slider to fire. The darts don't jam like Nerf ones and travel an impressive distance. Also they are more resilient and look like they'll last longer than their foam rivals. There are storage sections in the gun to keep some of your darts safe for next time.Rival shot darts are meant to stick to the wings of this gun in play but as we only have one that's not possible to test out at present. The target provided just has a shiny plastic layer and the bullets just stick to this sort of surface, pinging off walls and wood. Although unlike Nerf I'm banning this from indoor play as the darts are a bit too hard. The gun looks good and is made from high quality, thick plastic. There's nothing flimsy or immediately breakable looking with it. The opening flaps have sturdy looking metal pins and springs. This model shoots a single dart at a time and an extra set of 3 when loaded. The main single firing clip can load 8 darts at a time.Recommended for older children and young at heart adults. I thought my 12 year old son was growing out of Nerf but this has rekindled his interest. Best get buying more guns and darts then so he can join in with his younger brother ... Currently who has the Boom co gun wins ...

All children and adults alike like these Nerf type guns, they are impressively designed and even the Royal Marines use them when they want to have fun. This particular brand from BOOMco is an impressive piece of kit. This gun is more akin to the firepower from the Aliens movies than your Cowboy movie. The gun is solid and robust. The darts are plastic and thinner, this makes them travel further; unlike Nerf etc. As the darts are not rubber/foam, they dont jam as they do in the Nerf Blasters. The Stealth Ambush Blaster range is good and you have hidden firepower if you're in a sticky situation. It has a pump action mechanism to fire the darts, which is good, younger children may find it tiring, but they soon get use to it.I would advise in wearing googles, as these can sting a little more than Nerf Darts. The BOOMco gear is very good and reasonably priced. It also looks good. The darts come in varyng colours, so each team or person can have varying colours. But, I noticed that to get the colour you want from Amazon is a lottery. But, I managed to get three differing colours.Overall, good quality gun and gives Nerf real competition.

We have a couple of Nerfs in our household and they are good fun. This BOOMco takes things up a couple of notches - big, brash and semi-lethal. The key points of comparison are:- firmer bullets, which means they hurt- longer range- bulkier and heavierFor my 11-year old nephew, this is a very welcome step-up. Power is everything at this age it is only a matter of time before he starts wearing camo paint and ambushes the neighbours. My for children, at 9 and 3, the BOOMco is a step too far. In particular the accuracy isn't great - this slide action can make for a skewed shot - and this makes it semi-lethal. This means that cats are safe from deliberate shots but at great risk from every other shot. And for Dad?I love it!Outside use only, ideally in a large garden unless you fancy fetching the bullets from next door regularly.Five stars, but only in the appropriate hands.

This stealth ambush blaster gun is wonderful quality and excellent value for money. A amazingly well made outdoor fun toy.One of the main advantages is it got everyone outside in the fresh air yesterday for hours. Also it generated a lot of interest in the park from other children who wanted to play too. This BoomCo blaster is super quick to fire and has an unbelievably long distance range. Whilst this is fun for all ages the smaller children might find it a little heavy. This is I am sure going to be on a lot of children's Xmas wish lists. Well done Mattel and BoomCo..

Excellent, safe and sturdy, this gun fires soft darts accurately and has a long range. I'm not normally a fan of gun-type toys, but this is brightly coloured and looks nothing like a real gun.It has given us so many hours of exercise and fun that I have no hesitation in recommending.

We got this for my friends kid on a lightning deal and it was £16.99 well spent. Boy are these things powerful.Dont buy if there are small children running around the house though.

20.7.2016

We bought this for the 'kids' and had so much for with it, I bought another BOOMco gun for myself. They seem to be as well made as our boys' nerf guns, but at a much better price.

Great foam dart gun. Air powered no batteries needed. Pretty decent range though accuracy is iffy. Lots of firepower and great fun.
