When the item arrived, it was carefully packaged and came in a nice box. The box had all the instructions necessary for the assembly of the bottle (that is putting the filter in), care and use. Before the item arrived I was very curious "How does the filter fit in?" but it was surprisingly easy to put in. You just drop the filter in, squeeze the bottle and the filter falls into its place when you give it a shake or two, and you release. That is all. And to clean the bottle, just squeeze the bottle and the filter will release so you can take it out. The bottle does get a few scratches but it is nowhere visible unless you look very carefully.I did not observe any flaking or chipping from the filter just like some people were worried about.I am someone who carries my bag everywhere, my bag has my laptop or tablet in it all the time and it becomes a very risky thing to have a water bottle in my bag in case it comes open and damages my gadgets or documents. The most important thing about Black + Blum bottle is very secure in terms of the lock. The cap is cork and the tag helps to tighten it so it does not slide off and open. The bottle itself is very visually appealing and has caught eye of all my friends who saw me using it. I personally love the design as it is very easy to grip and clean. The tag is actually very useful (to carry, to open, to keep it locked) despite looking like a small detail. The rim of the bottle is also very smooth and comfortable to drink from. The charcoal filter is very unique and cool-looking and also effective as Black + Blum advertises. It's effect is not immediate but it is a natural filter therefore I love the charcoal filter. It definitely makes difference to the tap water of my house when filtered and it tastes great. So far I have had this bottle for almost 4 months and I carry it everywhere and haven't had any issues. I have just ordered a backup charcoal filter to have it handy during my summer holiday!Overall, the item has a premium feel to it and is very easy to clean, use and the cap-lock is very secure.Considering buying the larger version carafe for my new house as I am very satisfied.Definitely recommended.UPDATE: It has been 3 years since I have been using this bottle. It's as good as new apart from losing a minor amount of shine and few scratches from being thrown around, survived many machine washes and the cork did not disintegrate contrary to my belief, absolutely love it and recommended.

I was given one of these water bottles at Christmas after being advised to drink more water after a recent bout of kidney stones. On first impressions, I was impressed: it's an attractive thing made of a robust, polycarbonate-type plastic that feels solid and smooth in the mouth. The cork stopper, metal hoop and carrying tag are attractive and well made, and the charcoal stick itself is certainly a conversation starter. There are a few important points I had to figure out on my own before I could get the bottle working at its best, though:1) The charcoal sticks are not a uniform size and shape and may not fit perfectly in the bottle's little niche for it. Mine is a touch too long and doesn't fit in the niche much at all,but by squeezing the bottle and allowing the stick to fall into the niche a little way, when you let go it grips the charcoal properly and prevents it moving around. Once you've mastered this it's quite easy to take the charcoal in and out, which is important as you have to remove it when you wash the bottle. Do not try and force the charcoal all the way into the niche as you may not be able to get it out again and you could damage the bottle.2) During my first few days of use, I noticed a strong whiff of chlorine when removed the stopper. This is because the little bubbles that come off the binchotan charcoal are chlorine gas being taken out of suspension in the water and they need somewhere to go. I also noticed that when I took the top off, the charcoal would immediately start releasing bubbles again. I reasoned that this is because there's only so much chlorine that can diffuse into the air space in the bottle before it won't diffuse out any more. So...3) The best way I've found to use the bottle is to fill it up before I go to bed, then leave it overnight with the top off so it has enough air supply to completely dechlorinate the water, then put the top on and take it to work. The water tastes great this way.4) Probably the biggest drawback for this bottle is the time it takes to actually filter the water. I take a full bottle to work, drink it in the morning and then refill before lunch and leave it for an hour. This means the water isn't as well filtered in the afternoon, but it's still pretty good. If you expect to fill your water bottle several times per day though, this may not be for you.

I have two of these bottles, so it is clear that they serve a purpose for me and that I like their effect on my water. They're not altogether perfect, but I like them enough to recommend them without hesitation.Looks-wise, I like the shape and their stoppered spouts, and the charcoal tends to provide a talking point. The shape, in part, allows for the use of the charcoal, and is pleasing on the eye; the fact that you have to deform the bottle to fit the charcoal in is not ideal and hairline fractures do appear - no breakages yet though (after four bottles). The stopper works well in general, though leaks (very small) occur with one of the bottles I have.My main concern with the stopper is a tendency for discolouration on the silicone around the cork; it's unsightly, difficult to clean perfectly, and slightly concerning in a hygiene sense, though I've never suffered any problems with health or taste from the bottles (which are cleaned regularly, along with the stoppers). In terms of effectiveness as filters. I like the taste that these bottles produce over time - ideally left overnight or for a day or two. With plain tap-water, it takes a while, but left long enough, the water assumes a beautifully blank and soft flavour and texture. The process is much quicker with filtered water, and water passed through a Brita Maxtra filter and left in one of these bottles for 24 hours tastes significantly better than water that has only been through the Brita filter. In the long-term, charcoal only needs replacing a few times a year, and the refills are cheap. Boiling part way through the charcoal's life works reasonably well, if done thoroughly with a few water changes. As such, it's fairly economical, even if it is slow compared to the suck-through filters offered by most competitors.I like it, I've used these bottles for four years, and I recommend them to everyone who asks why I've got a black thing in my bottle. What more can I say?

This bottle was recommended to me by a friend, and having just lost my previous glass water bottle, I decided to give it a try.Materials: Although made from plastic (BPA-free), the main bottle has the look of glass. It feels very sturdy and is comfortable to hold. I like the mouth of the bottle very much; it is just the right size to drink from and isn't threaded, which adds to the comfort. The charcoal and the cork stopper add interesting textures.Look: This bottle is an attention-grabber! I haven't seen anything similar anywhere else (and it appears nobody else has either!), and the design is so much more appealing than the many other standard water bottles out there.Taste: The water in my area is hard, and tastes fine as it is, but there is definitely a noticeable improvement with this bottle; however the tap water now tastes chlorinated in comparison! It would make even more of a difference in areas where the tap water doesn't taste nice. I have also purchased one of the charcoal sticks to put in a fridge jug for using at home.Practicality: The cork stopper is held securely in place, and thanks to the silicone-covered lower part, does not leak, even when turned upside down or left in a bag. I found the charcoal easy to slot into place (there are instructions on the packaging, or online videos if you're having difficulty!) and it hasn't budged.Eco: I certainly won't be buying any more bottled water, saving both money and plastic waste. The packaging that the bottle comes in is not excessive, and is recyclable. I really like that the filter itself - the charcoal - is a natural product, and is completely recyclable. It even has many uses after the recommended 6 months of use in the bottle - as detailed on the packaging!Overall, I would highly recommend this bottle for someone who wants a reusable bottle which is both stylish and practical, not to mention the eco-credentials!

I have tried a number of different water bottles all claiming to filter water, improve taste, not dribble all over the place when you carry them around in a bag etc. This one ticks most of the boxes. In my opinion, it is a nice looking bottle and something of a talking point. It looks glass like, when in fact it is plastic and needs to be so that the charcoal can be replaced or removed for thorough cleaning. It is easy to fill, great to drink from, and to date, I've not had any spillages or leaks from the silicon coated cork lid.The taste of the water is definitely and improvement on our standard tap water, but I have to leave the filled bottle overnight in the fridge for it to filter the chlorine out. Therefore a degree of planning is involved. If you want better tasting tap water directly from the tap, you need to buy a bottle where you physically suck the water through the filter, like a bobble bottle, camelback or Brita.I find the metal closure difficult to secure over the cork. Perhaps this will get easier with time? This is the second bottle I have received as the first one had to be sent back as the charcoal was broken when I received it. When I compared the shape of the charcoal with the replacement bottle I had sent, I noticed that the original one was much more tapered and I wonder whether that made it more brittle.I managed to remove the charcoal with relative ease for cleaning and handled it very carefully before replacing it.All in all, this is nice and I'd recommend it as long as you do not expect an instant improvement in water taste. When I've had it for a while and am confident that the charcoal is not going to break I will consider buying another one.

I live in a very hard water area where the water is unpleasant and tastes and smells like chlorine. I came across these bottles a little while ago but didn't buy one due to the price. However, I am trying to drink more water and decided to take the plunge.Durability- a nice, sturdy plastic which the seller says is BPA free. To me, this is a bit safer than glass. You can just about push the 'dimples' on the bottle to help the charcoal into place. It's very aesthetic looking. I am a little concerned that the cork on the lid is showing signs of wear after about a week- how will this look in a few months? I don't know... This is the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars.Taste- my water tastes so much better. It is recommended that you leave your water to 'filter' through the charcoal for at least an hour. I usually leave mine overnight in the fridge and, in the morning, it no longer tastes ad smells like chlorine.Charcoal- I've had no issues with the charcoal breaking or leaving any residue at all as some other buyers have experienced. I like the use of charcoal as it's natural and can be reused and disposed of at the end of its six-month life. This is a great alternative to filter bottles with filters you throw away i.e. bobble bottle.Overall- I would really recommend this to eco-conscious people who hate the taste of their tap water and commute or travel to college/university/school. A little concerned at the price of the charcoal replacement but I guess the pieces last six months. Make sure to boil after three months.

Plastic bottle that feels solid and durable. The cork stopper has a silcone base and the metal fastener is a tight snug fit over the top of the cork, so you no there wont be any accidental leakages or openings.I live in a soft water area, however still dislike the taste of tap water. I usually use a brita filter, however still find that there is still a slight taste with filtered water, although I am used to it.I wasnt sure what to expect with this. I filled it up with tap water in the morning, and waiting until later in the afternoon/evening to try it. I was very surprised and liked how good the water tasted. The water didnt actually have a taste anymore, which was great.Made it a lot more pleasant to drink.I also like the longevity of the carbon, in that after 3 months, you "recharge" it, and after 6 months, you replace the carbon, which is easy to do. Squeezing the bottle frees the carbon rod which can then be tipped out, and a new one dropped in and positioned, letting go of the bottle to secure it in place. And at roughly £5 a carbon filter, I'm very happy to pay £10 per year for great tasting water which is par on if not better than bottled mineral water. While the Brita Fill & Go or Bobble may has the advantage of "instant" filtration, this just needs a little forethought and tactical planning. There is no reason why you can't drink the water after an hour, it just tastes better if you leave it for longer and let the carbon do it's job. So fill it in the morning or the night before, and you're set.

Well, I reserve judgement so for. I spent over 20 mins trying to get the charcoal to position snuggly in the middle protuberance and being cognisant of the reviewer who split the bottle, I stopped when it was held in place securely, after about the fifth attempt, although it is not completely "snug". I can see how the bottle could split after many squeezes. I am a little reluctant to rave about the item, given that it has a natural core - the charcoal, BUT the other areas in contact with the water are a plastic bottle and a rubber cap. The cap is topped by cork, but that is not in contact with the water. Also, note that the effect is not really there until 4 hours plus!So forget topping this bottle with water and then drinking within the hour. You can do this, but it is "besser"/ "best" to leave the water for four hours or longer until the charcoal stick has done it's job! I reserve judgement for now. All the talk about the water tasting better I have yet to experience.**Update: Feb 2015: the water really does taste better, so I am a big fan and have two of these now. I noticed recently that Black and Blum produce a larger glass carafe, which is great, but you can't affix the charcoal stick. This is probably why BPA Free plastic is used on this. There is another advantage of the plastic bottle and that is weight if you take it out and about with you, and also if you happen to drop it.

I really like this product. The bottle is very sturdy; although I have not dropped it yet, I think if I did, it would not crack. The charcoal was rather difficult for me to wrestle into its 'nook', but once settled, it stays put. I do like that there is a bump in the bottle for the charcoal to stay secured. I run clean tapwater into it and let it sit for a while before drinking. It tastes so fresh and has no smell like regular tapwater often does. I do drink a lot of water each day, so find myself refilling the bottle a lot, so I wonder if there is a larger pitcher type product available. That would be nice. The only concern I have is that cleaning is a bit difficult. The instructions forbid using soap,as this would likely ruin the charcoal. I suppose a person could remove the charcoal and then rinse the entire bottle with soapy water. I very carefully wash the rim where my lips touch with a soapy towel and then rinse with very hot water. The bottle stopper is made of cork and rubber, so it can be washed with soap and water. The packaging came flat with the option to fold it into a box to present the bottle as a gift to someone, and the packaging is recyclable and compostable. The charcoal can be recharged after 3 months, then after an other three months it can be recycled. I think this is a great alternative to buying bottled waters.

I love this bottle so much!! It helps me save the planet, it provides health benefits, and it's a beautiful bottle.Warning! THIS IS A CONVERSATION STARTER!! If you don't want to be spoken to, then do not whip this out in public. Someone is sure to ask you what's in the bottle and then you have to go on to explain why you've got charcoal in a bottle and where they could purchase it etc etc.The only reason I've given 4 stars is because you can't get immediate benefits of filtration as you've got to let it stand for at least an hour and for optimal benefits 8 hours. This means that if you drink lots of water like I do then you will be out of water in a quick minute and would need to wait 8 hours before you drink again.*Tip- I've bought a separate charcoal stick which I've put in a jug.I keep the jug filled so once I've emptied my bottle I can top it up with filtered water from the jug in the refrigerator at home also use a large bottle (1ltr plus) and leave in the refrigerator at work. Problem solved. The cork is very secure and will not pop open even when it falls.I carry this in my work bag with all my valuable 'non-water resistant' items and I've never had a leak and don't think I ever will you could turn the bottle upside down and it will not leak.

This is my third purchase of one of these - not that they wore out but just that I had two for home use and gave one away to someone who visited and the remainder of their trip was all over Europe and then off to Singapore and Australia so this was pretty perfect for them to take and use whilst traveling.I just bought my third to use at work to encourage me to drink more water and less coffee and it's working. I road tested yesterday afternoon with water from our mains filtered machine at work having had 2 hours with the charcoal and also a cup of the same water - both left to stand for the same time. The taste of the water in the bottle won hands down. The fact these have a carry handle and also just don't ever leak in a bag and the water is cheaper than chips make these perfect. When I first bought mine around 3 years ago the advice was boil the charcoal after 6 months and use for a further 6 months which was fine. I see now they only suggest 6 months with boiling at 3 months use.My only problem was that I didn't order a new stick for my home version - now also resolved.

Can't fault this product or company. My first bottle arrived with quite a noticeable scratch on it which ruined the "glass" look of the bottle. After contacting them they offered to send a replacement free of charge and were friendly - fantastic customer service. The bottle itself is easy to put the charcoal into (although I did panic at how much it initially bent when I squeezed it, but it's meant to!). After an hour I compared the taste to a normal glass of tap water and you could tell the difference - far less chemically and almost light, just like you'd expect from mineral water. It's large enough to carry a good amount of water, although I tend to refill after lunch time to see me through the day.Buy this product,it's honestly incredible to look at but also does exactly what it claims to do. Also when comparing other "filtered" water bottles and the price of the replacement filters, this is a no brainer - the charcoal lasts 6 months (with a recharge by boiling at 3 months) and thereafter £4.50 every other 6 months.

I bought this as a bit of a gimmick - I dot drink enough water so if I buy something pretty it might bribe me to for a couple of weeks. That was just before Xmas, and now I don't leave the house without it! I have I say, 6+ months in I think it does need a new filter, but for £3.80 and free delivery you won't find me complaining!I work in schools, and am pretty careless so it is a bit scratched up now, and people regularly challenge me about what's in my bottle, plus the stainless steel hoop has grown loose and can pull out if I try to close it clumsily. However none of these issues affect functionality (the hoop just snaps back into its place and once tight there's no issue of it coming off. Also the cork is pretty snug in itself) and it has transformed me from someone who would readily go a full day without a drink to someone who sticks the bottle in their bag regardless ad fills it up as she goes!*i find water tastes fine after apx an hour, half an hour ok if I'm thirsty!!

First off, this bottle looks great, I like it a good bit, however the charcoal filter is a bit odd. It's hard to get it lodged into place in the bottle, and I'm constantly feeling like it's going to fall out. The stick (it's an actual branch, cut to the right length and turned into charcoal, you can see the knobs and grain) is constantly breaking off small bits of charcoal that float in my water. The cork top is nice, but it would be nicer if I didn't have to set it aside to drink from the bottle. I find myself getting up, walking away with the bottle, then coming back a few minutes later to figure out where I left the top.The neck is very sturdy plastic, and feels good to drink out of,the body is a bit more flexible, which allows a bit of finagling to get the charcoal lodged into the bottle. I recommend it, I mean, unless your co-workers are going to make fun of you for having a stick in your water, because mine sure do.

i get comments on this bottle from everyone at the office. it's a pretty cool design (even if one guy mistook it for a bong lol).the bottle itself is plastic, and little flimsier than i expected, but i think it'll last just fine. it needs flex so you can lock the charcoal into place.the peg at the top leaks ever so slightly, so you dont want to carry it around upside-down. but you wont be in trouble if it gets knocked over or sits on it's side for a while.also worth noting is the bottom of the bottle is too wide for most car cup holders. i can kinda squeeze the thing into the door panel of my car, but it's not really something you can easily use while driving since you have to manage the cork.overall i'm very happy with the bottle, and the water tastes great! they recommend letting water sit in there for at least an hour and up to 8 hours for max filtration effect. plus this thing just looks too cool to pass on!
