I previously had a Rab Salvo soft-shell jacket that has a great breathability, fit and features. I tried it during a two day hike at a mountain peak at 2,500m in good weather conditions, in early Fall. Despite its fleece lining and my thick baselayer, I froze when we faced strong winds. I put my hardshell on, but I realised there was no way I could retain heat. The Salvo seemed to be made for warmer weather conditions.I sold it and bought the Black Diamond Dawn Patrol, after many great reviews and recommendations by a few fellow mountaineers, who swear by Black Diamond's name. Initially I was afraid I made another bad choice. Soon I had the opportunity to try it at another two-day hike,at a mountain peak of 2,600m, during winter, in adverse weather conditions.During the first half of the first day, the weather was sunny and relatively warm. I had a light baselayer and the BD Dawn Patrol, and I realised that the jacket strikes a perfect balance between air-permeability and wind-protection. Absolutely amazing. Around noon the temperature dropped fast (slightly above 0 Celsius), the weather became foggy and with small gusts of cold wind freezing us. Being static for a couple of hours I only put my hardshell on and I stayed perfectly warm.The next day, the weather was foggy again and the snow very frozen, thus we had to use our crampons. We started our hike towards the peak (900m elevation, 4-5 hours of hike) with a baselayer, a lightweight fleece pull-on (~200gr weight) and the BD Dawn Patrol. It was absolutely amazing. I tend to sweat a lot but the Dawn Patrol worked amazingly, blocking as much as it should the few gusts of cold wind.Upon crossing a ridge it started to snow heavily and the wind was very intense. I don't know the exact speed but the snow was blown horizontally, literally hitting hard - mostly "slapping" our faces. I only used my hardshell, as it was hard to stand in the cold, being once again afraid that I would start freezing. But no! Moments and moments again, I checked myself and realised that BD Dawn Patrol kept me very dry (no one escapes some sweat) and therefore warm.I'm sure there are many other options out there, but for me, the Black Diamond Dawn Patrol does exactly what it is supposed to, and it does it perfectly!

I brought this Jacket after reading several good reviews on outdoor clothing sites.The delivery was really prompt and the Jacket looks as expected.The size is a little large, I am 170cm and 75Kg and went for a Med, but as I brought this for winter use I'm glad there is plenty of space for a fleece underneath.| haven't tried in any bad weather yet but so far it offers good wind resistance and is very breathable.

This jacket is a perfect fall, winter, spring everyday jacket. Can not wait for the use of it on the backcountry skins this winter wit a layer or two.
