I don't usually write reviews, but with the mixed opinions of this game I had to chip in my two cents. Firstly, I'd like to to express a little disappointment with whoever Amazon use for first class delivery; my order was automatically upgraded to first class for free to ensure I got the game on release day. It arrived the day after. I can't complain much as it was free delivery, but I've used super-saver free delivery (3-5 days) where items arrived on release date a few times, so this first class delivery was a little disappointing. As for the game itself, though... If you've played Fahrenheit (Indigo Prophecy) or Heavy Rain, you already know what you're getting into,so I probably wouldn't pay much attention to critic reviews. The game, like other Quantic Dream titles, is more interactive movie than it is an actual game and frankly, this is what I love about their games. Most typical games feel limited in what actions you can do apart from walking down designated paths or shooting so it's refreshing to have other interactions.Although this can technically be described as an action game, there's not a lot of action in it. One of the biggest criticism of said action is that it doesn't really affect the game. One can miss all the action prompts and come out of an explosive scene alive and kicking, which is a negative - especially compared to Heavy Rain, where most actions have consequences. But the performances and the main story beats can help you forget this and if you're just a casual gamer, you'll probably prefer this.My only real gripe with this game is the schizophrenic pacing of the game. It's told in completely random order, jumping through time when the protagonist might be an angsty teen, a child or a young woman - usually with no real effect. This is loosely explained towards the ending, but it doesn't justify this decision. This isn't Memento; the story isn't about memory lapses etc., so it feels tacked on to be edgy and frankly, I was confused by the story because of it. I believe there's an option to play it in chronological order after completing the game, so I'm very much looking forward to playing it that way so the story will make more sense.Speaking of story, this spans around 15 years or so of the protagonist's life so it is, again, a little schizophrenic. Without spoiling anything (as most of it can be seen in trailers) we span years where she's homeless, in a warzone and even wandering the deserts. This could easily have been several different games as the tone shifts dramatically throughout the game, but I think this is actually what helps the game stay interesting.A nice feature of the game is that it lets you use smart phone to control it. Whilst gamers probably won't give a crap (and rightly so, as it'll drain you phone's battery like nobody's business!) it does open up opportunities for family and friends who never play video games. I've had people visit who seemed intrigued by the game but aren't gamers by any stretch of the imagination but would consider playing it through their phones. I think we need more games like this to diversify not only genre but audience, which is a small predictable bunch compared to other mediums. The special edition is okay. The packaging is nice, but I was disappointed all the extras were download=only. I'm still using the old 40gb PS3 and thanks to GTA's 8gb install and this game's 4gb install, I had to delete a lot of stuff just to be able to download them all. I was a little disappointed in the dynamic theme, mostly because the Heavy Rain one was pretty cool whereas with this game, it's just a slide show of the character through the ages. The game is exciting, emotional and has pretty solid performances all around. This is probably the first time I've liked Ellen Page in anything and Willem DeFoe is his usual great self (though does have a few hammy predictable parts towards the end). I'd actually recommend this game to film fans rather than gamers for this reason as well as the strong narrative, which is rare in the bigger games. It's a fun game that starts slow, but engages you (and potentially others around you). If you're the type that keeps watching movies screaming at the screen "why would you do that?!" or "don't open that door!" despite knowing you can't really do anything about it, I think you'll like this game. I do.

After immensely enjoying Quantic Dream's previous title, 'Heavy Rain', I was anticipating what they would create for their next title. 'Beyond: Two Souls', with its intriguing premise, promised to be something a little bit different from it's forerunners. While playing similiarly to 'Heavy Rain', 'Beyond' took the mechanics and put something new on the table. You not only take control of the protagonist Jodie Holmes, but also the entity, Aiden, who has a metaphysical link to Jodie, making them inseperable. Things that Jodie cannot achieve physically, Aiden can do with his powers. The game is, in some respects, like playing an interactive movie, though it all plays out by your actions throughout as to how events transpire and the ending. There is a balance of puzzle solving, action and immersive interactivity within the environments you are introduced to.The characterisation of Jodie and the other principle cast is superb. They are relatable, multilayered figures who can be sympathised with, hated or loved. Jodie herself, played by Ellen Page, was more than I could have hoped for in a lead character. Playing through 15 years of Jodies very existence was thoroughly enjoyable for how 'extraordinary' (as sold to us!) everything is - her experiences are far beyond the average young woman, but are told in a way that makes it all fairly believable. I also really liked the characters of Dawkins and Cole, particularly interacting with Jodie as a child - it was all very sweet. Dawkin's particularly is a deep, evolving character whose direction in the story becomes something very involved by the end.Jodie's incredible life is played out in a non-linear fashion, exploring different aspects of her story at different ages as the plot unravels. Some parts are very laid back in approach, and others are fast paced and focused on full on QTE interactions. Maybe I just enjoy micromanagement type functions a little too much, but performing the most simple tasks rather than the big full on action elements were what I enjoyed the most - like cooking food or playing with toys. The overarching story was beautifully conceived and played with your emotions all the way through. Though, I do think that in the later stages of the game, the story culminated into something that, for me, that didn't fully hit the mark. With a story that promised so much from the get go with so many deep facets, it got a little bit too hokey and over the top in the latter stages. It was the same in respects with one of Quantic Dream's earlier games, 'Fahrenheit'. Both had supernatural elements, which envoked engaging mysteries, but when it came to unveiling the truthes behind it all, both games seemed to trip over themselves narratively and sent the game spiralling into craziness. Probably the only part of end game that I enjoyed was learning the truth about Aiden.Visually, 'Beyond' is gorgeous - a cinematic presentation of pure eye candy. It has a breathtaking realism that even surpassed the amazing graphics of 'Heavy Rain'. The characters and their facial animations and body movements are uncanny. The textures are so amazing, just seeing them you know what they'd feel like to touch. The environments you walk around have such attention to detail to make everything seem as life-like as possible. All in all, 'Beyond' is an epic gaming experience, something different in a market of games that all seem to be doing relatively the same things. With innovative game mechanics and an awe-inspiring presentation, its really one of those dynamic experiences that sets it far apart from the rest.To note about the Special Edition, for how much they charged on release compared to the standard edition was excessive. What extra content you got isn't a whole lot, and even then, its not even included on the disc or even a second extra disc; instead, you have to download it from the PlayStation Store. For the purchase of a physical copy of the game, it should have been present in the package.

I've tentatively come to the conclusion that most people who dislike Beyond do so because they cannot (or will not) accept the game on its own terms: They have certain expectations of video games, and deviation from well-established norms vexes them. So, for instance, they demand interactivity, even when accepting passivity allows a far more compelling and moving narrative. In contrast, other people are, perhaps, more flexible (at least with regards to their expectations of the medium). For instance, the "passivity" of playing Beyond did not bother me in the slightest (except, at times, the second play-through; but I passed it the first time a day ago). I knew what I was getting into.I believe that many reviewers, given their larger than average exposure to the medium are even less tolerant of certain deviations from game play norms. This, I think, explains the large divergence of opinions on metacritic, and the (to me) inconceivably low average the game currently has (a mere 73!).Like the criticism that the game strips the player of freedom/agency, I do not think the others have merit:I consider the script to be impeccable. I have noticed no plot holes, and very few problems with the dialogue. It is telling that David Cage took a year of 12-14-hour days to write it and that it is 2000 pages in length.I consider Page's acting to be truly and deeply awe-inspiring. I cannot praise her highly enough. She memorized 30-40 pages of dialogue each day. She had very little time to prepare and rehearse. She often had to juggle different emotional responses to the situations (e.g., playing the part one way in a scene and playing it another way in the same scene). Yet, despite these challenges, her acting is consistently of the highest professional quality. I have noticed no flaws in her performance; it is (along with William Dafoe's performance) very much in keeping with her Academy Award for Best Actress. I consider her to be the most talented actress I've seen.I also think that the myriad ad hominem against David Cage seems entirely unwarranted. He does not try to impose his views on others. Rather, he is merely passionate, has a vision he believes in, and is outspoken in his beliefs. He believes that gaming can, like cinema or literature, change the world (or try to). This is not arrogant; it is noble. Moreover, the game has other strengths that seem to be overlooked by many:- The social commentary is entirely warranted, and appropriately biting.- The graphical quality of the game is the best of any on a console.- The story is incredibly moving and thought-provoking. The narrative was very easy for me to follow, despite the non-chronological presentation.- There is a wide range of different locales and gameplay dynamics employed. Variety is the spice of life.To put it succinctly (and a little melodramatically):For me, the game is both a reminder and illustration of the many challenges and the triumphs, the sadnesses and joys that life has to offer. For me, it's life affirming, and I consider it deep, rich and meaningful. There are almost no other games (and few movies and books, for that matter) for which I can say the same.Take a chance; play this game.

Beyond: Two Souls is the story of Jodie Holmes who since birth has been tied to Aiden, an entity that protects her and has his own will. The story is told as out-of-seqence flashbacks to Jodie's life growing up from a young girl, through her teenage years into womanhood, and her relationship with Nathan Dawkins, directory of a paranormal research institute. Ellen Page and Willem Defoe do an excellent job in bringing Jodie and Nathan to life, helping you understand what drives the characters and to consider which decision you would make under the circumstances. The gameplay is mostly limited to dialog selection and controlling the characters movements during action sequences. You can control both Jodie and the entity Aiden, using the latter mostly to get you of otherwise impossible situations. Those familiar with Quantic Dream will draw comparisons with Heavy Rain, a choose you own adventure style murder mystery in which the direction of the story and the fate of the characters was entirely in your hands. This experience is more linear and akin to Last Action Hero, throwing you into a movie blockbuster in which your choices are more about what you think the characters would do under certain circumstances, to govern the path but not the outcome of individual scenes. This appears to have been a major critisicm of Beyond, especially coming after Heavy Rain and although I can see this argument, it really depends on how much effort on your part you want to immerse yourself into the story. Moreover this argument is not strictly true, since the choices you make during the game will influence the experience you (and the characters) will encounter and ultimately the choices that you will make in the final scene and by extension the outcome of the epilogue.Overall it is less intense from a gameplay point of view than Heavy Rain because characters won't die as a result of your actions and there are far fewer time-factored choices to be made (hence only three stars for "fun"). But the story itself is more emotional and more profound in its conclusion (coincidentally Aiden and I had a shared experience which touched me from a personal perspective). You might ask yourself after this event whether you just experienced a mo-capped 12 hour movie or participated in a video game. The line is blurred and I say don't restrict yourself to artistic norms and take this as the interactive experience that it is, and perhaps as a glimpse of how future entertainment might be consumed.

Never before have I found myself after finishing a game with a genuine full body rush from toe to the top of my head, a full body tingle. Never before have I had real tears running down my face. Sure after Ico and Shadow Of The Colosus I was moved and yes, a small tear. But Beyond moved me in only a way that a big sad blockbuster could. ET, The Notebook, you get the picture.Beyond is the game that every PS3 gamer should play. I was shocked to see some very low scores, yes there have been some high scores but I have to question what sort of people have reviewed and scored the game so low, and quite frankly I worry about them. Two Souls has you playing a troubled young girl with a strange power, this power has you playing in first person mode and can be a very powerful aid.Through the play-through you will encounter stages where you will be torn with what you must do or rather what you feel you must do. Some missions will have you performing acts that you never thought you'd do in video game format. The game is very varied in that you'll never get fed up with playing. Without spoiling anything you'll undertake missions like in Metal Gear Solid 4 to missions where blowing stuff up is a huge thrill, to then walking about playing with dolls. Never before have I felt someones pain so much. The acting throughout the game is second to none and this helps to draw you into the would David Cage has created.Heavy Rain was brilliant and I really didn't think it was possible to take it higher, he does and then some. In parts of Beyond you could fool friends into thinking you were in fact on a Playstation 4, it looks that good.I am struggling to review this game as it's so difficult not to spoil any of the plot and to talk any more than I have done would be the wrong thing to do.I'm a 42 year old gamer so not some snot nosed kid who's taken a break from GTA V or Call of Duty to play and review Beyond, don't get me wrong, fantastic games in there own right but please don't put Beyond in the same category, it's on PS3 but that's where it ends.Beyond Two Souls is a very special game that both moves and has you sitting on the edge of your seat at times with some very tense moments. The only thing stopping the game from getting full marks are the fighting portions of the game with missed stick pushes that seem to go the wrong way, leaving you confused as to weather it's you or the game that got it wrong.

As much as the reviews from the critics are mixed, I personally feel that Beyond: Two Souls is highly under-appreciated and is definitely worth your time, especially when games these days are mostly Call of Duty rip-offs!It essentially revolves around Jodie who has a connection to a supernatural entity who she calls Aiden and the related events that occur at different points in her life. For those of you who played Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls is more of the same from a gameplay perspective - a focus on pressing buttons to perform actions or a trigger certain outcome. You can still control Jodie and Aiden and move them about accordingly throughout the game in different chapters.Graphically,it is incredible, probably the best looking title of this generation. Whilst critics argue that the gameplay mechanics are frustrating, they really are not as bad as they make it out. All it requires is a little practice and you will become comfortable and fine. They certainly have not put me off! The story is a little bit confusing and scattered yet however, both Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe deliver brilliant performances. There are also some spectacular set-pieces in different parts of the game for example (SPOILER: go to next paragraph NOW if you do not want to find out!) the chapter titled 'The Experiment' near the start of the game. In this, Jodie when she is a little girl is asked to do certain things (such guessing cards in front of a woman in the room next door etc,). Yet when you make Aiden go mad by throwing things all over the place, the woman in the other room freaks out. It really is a tense scene when objects are thrown all over the place, yet well portrayed by the actors. There are also different outcomes for different actions and decisions you make resulting in different endings. Combine this with all the trophies you can unlock, it is possible you will spend a decent amount of time with the game.To conclude, it really depends on what 'floats your boat'. Beyond: Two Souls is a very good game despite its flaws. You will definitely enjoy it if you enjoyed Heavy Rain. The pros easily outweigh the cons. Do not let the mixed reviews deter you.8/10**For those who wish to get the Special Edition (if still available) it comes with an extra scene, avatars, dynamic theme and more.**

Whilst this is clearly a bit of a marmite game, I'd highly recommend it to those who liked Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit. The story is compelling and both Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe are outstanding. I also thought that Kadeem Hardison put in a great performance as Cole Freeman. The motion capture techniques used, brilliant acting and interesting storyline all combine to actually achieve something which doesn't happen much in games... it made me care for the characters. The only other game which has really achieved that in my opinion is The Last of Us (the relationship between Joel and Ellie). This is also a game which makes you think and not everything is black and white. I don't want to spoil it for others,so won't go into too much detail, but there is a section with a child soldier which really made me sit up and take notice and the game explores the morality and consequences of the player's actions. It makes you question what you are being told and whether it's the right thing to do. Furthermore, my ending (there are 12 possible endings, depending on choices made in the game) was bittersweet. It's rare for a video game to have such an impact on the player in my opinion. The graphics are outstanding and are amongst the best on the current gen consoles. The soundtrack is also superb, not quite as good as The Last of Us, but not far off.My only criticisms of the game would be that the slow-motion action scenes weren't as good as the system used in Heavy Rain and I think it does take an hour or two to properly get into the storyline. The latter isn't helped by the fact that the game is not in chronological order, jumping between different time periods and at first I found this annoying. However, the more time you invest in it, the more it makes sense and the more hooked you become. Actually looking back, whilst confusing and irritating at first, this quickly becomes a great device for keeping the player wondering what will happen next and in some cases, wondering what it was that caused the consequence you are playing through. One thing I would say is that the demo doesn't really do the game justice and I'd recommend those on the fence to at least rent the game and invest a decent amount of time in it before deciding if it is for them or not.

I'll admit I didn't really get Quantic dreams last game 'Heavy Rain'. It was just ok for me, the biggest problem was the story just wasn't that captivating and ultimately I didn't care a great deal about the characters in it. So consequently I was dubious about picking up Beyond two souls which I had pre-ordered and cancelled twice before actually picking up. Luckily after abit of a slow start it really does become quite the engaging and emotional cinematic experience they advertise it to be. The acting is fantastic, easily some of the best acting in video gaming ever. The story although fragmented and fantastical at times actually works very well. The way the story jumps from the past to the future through out although initially confusing works very well and makes perfect sense once you get to the end, although I must admit it would have been a nice addition if they gave you the option to the play the game (without selecting individual chapters)in chronological order once completed. The controversial aspect of them game certainly from a critique point of view for this game has been to do with the 'gameplay' element. It is true in comparison to a standard third person action game your interactions are limited, however if you played Heavy Rain you will probably know what to expect. The addition of Aidan as the playable soul linked to Jodie however is interesting and offers some paranormal fun as you throw things round, possess and even kill people. For me the level of interaction is just right, ultimately in my eyes the reason you should pick up the game is for the story and the characters within it. Jodie (played by Ellen page) is undoubtedly the star (although credit to the supporting cast who are generally fantastic)and even if you find a particular chapter in the story abit of a drag (which I never did) she pulls you through it with such believability and sincerity that by the time you reach the epic conclusion you'll be an emotional wreck. I seriously recommend this game to anyone who has an interest in strong story telling and character development. Pick it up, play it through in as little sittings as possible and you will feel that you have been on the journey with Jodie. Amazing.

On the plus side:-+Highest quality of cinematic storytelling; great characters and superbly rendered near-future sci-fi setting+Impressive visuals, very good in game likeness of Ellen Paige and Willem Dafoe+Interesting variety of in game locales+Slow-motion action sequences, almost Matrix-esque, look cool+Your actions alter the story/dialogue adding value to a second run through (or replaying some chapters)+Scaring/confusing people is a lot of fun!And the not so good:--Each area feels like you are covering the same ground twice, once with Jodie, once with Aiden and moving around is slow-The mission based chapters feel like the game is trying too hard to be an action game rather than adventure;you are plunged into an area filled with groups of terrorists yet the control system doesn't allow for handling multiple enemies at once, despite early cut scenes in the game giving you the expectation of being able to quickly dispatch of a large group of cops, for example. So there's a lot of stealth, distraction, strangle, ad nauseam, little gunplay even against armed foes-Control system as the ghost is unusual; you have to move both analogue sticks in pre-determined directions and a shoulder button, and the action is always one pre-determined action which the game decides for you whether it's giving someone a cold chill or killing them - and one scene has you apparently strangling a small child, rather inappropriate!-The story jumps back and forth throughout Jodie's life from small child to adult so there's no flow from one chapter to another-Despite being about a ghost, there are few 'creepy' moments to the game, they could have exploited this betterThe story isn't as rich, personal or intriguing as Heavy Rain, still definitely worth a play through. Would recommend Telltale's The Walking Dead Series 1 for a more comparable story than Beyond Two Souls

I just want to start this review by saying that I consider myself to be a 'hard core' gamer, I play all of the latest games but I also play retro games as well, and that's because I love the challenge provided there. But i also like a deep, thought provoking and meaningful interactive story, witch is something that cinema just cannot provide, and this is why Beyond Two Souls is one of the very best games I've played in my 20+ years of gaming.Five minutes into the game and you are already hooked and probably oblivious to the fact that you are about to go on the ride of your life. The writing is some of the best in gaming period, and of course this is highlighted by the fact that Oscar nominees'Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe are present in the lead roles, both of witch give stunning performances. This is brought to life by the motion capture technology at use here(I hear that this is the very same tech use for James Cameron's Avatar), this captures even the most subtle facial expressions and body language. You can truly see a characters soul by looking into their eyes(!). Yes, this is probably the best looking game on PS3(it is).The game play is surprisingly fun, if you've ever wanted to take revenge out on somebody by turning into an invisible spirit and going all ''angry poltergeist'' on unsuspecting persons, this is the game for you. The action set-pieces presented here are among the most intense and exhilarating I have ever played. Nothing short of incredible.I wouldn't want to spoil anything so I'll just end this by saying that if you like an extraordinary story with relateable characters, a deep meaning, intense action, superior production values and a profound feeling of vivid excitement that will stick with you long after you turn the game off, then this is the game for you. This game delivered far Beyond(!) what i was expecting.

I wanted to write a review as I was hesitant to buy this game after reading the reviews it got from various gaming websites. Also reviews on Amazon seem to be mixed.I've played heavy rain so I was expecting something similar, but maybe not as good. I am at the last part of the game - roughly 13 hours playtime and it deserves a 9 out of 10.Pros:* This game has the best graphics I've seen on a ps3 game (better than GTAV and The Last of Us).* On par with heavy rain, very hard to decide what is better as they are just so different.* Story - I found this type of story fresh and new. It was like being part of a movie I control.* I let my girlfriend play this game and she loves it just as much as heavy rain.Cons:* Wish it was longer, didn't want it to end.* Sometimes your movement feels very limited because it appears open world in a lot of parts, but you can't venture out. Heavy Rain tackled this well by keeping up fences etc so you knew your boundaries.* The controls aren't perfect, in fight scenes it is sometimes hard to tell which direction to press. If this game lasted 20+ hours it would have got a 10 from me, I didn't want it to end. I understand it must take a big budget hiring an actress and motion capture but Tell Tale do a very good job at story telling in The Walking Dead series at a lower budget with longer play time.If you liked the play style of heavy rain then you will love this game. If you haven't played heavy rain, get that too!

4.5/5This Game has and will still keep receiving many mixed reviews and opinions. I personally like the game and it's non-linear approach, uncovering parts of Jodie's life as you continue throughout the story. I know i have talked to others who felt the story was slightly confusing, but in my opinion the non-linear approach adds that extra bit of drama to the game. The graphics and the acting are simply sensational. Graphics wise you won't get a game any better, and the acting and emotions, well only Naughty Dogs 'The Last Of Us' is on par. If I was to have one complaint it would be that the controls during combat are very difficult to get used to and I sometimes struggled with which way I was meant to be directing the analog stick.Gameplay is similar to 'Heavy Rain' the only difference is it's a bit more action. The game is extremely emotional and this alone should keep you hooked, along with brilliant graphics and excellent acting from Ellen Paige, Willem Defoe and Eric Winter the game could be classed as a masterpiece for certain aspects like the graphics and acting. But it's not for everyone. The game could be seen as more of a movie than a game but that is why I love it.Get this game if you like: Heavy Rain, The Last Of Us

After looking forward it playing this game for a while, and being a fan of previous Quantic Dream games I was a little unsure of what to expect. Though at first it's a little hard to get into because of the chapter chronology when this game was over I had been on an emotional roller coaster and started it up again.By less than an hour I was completely hooked, I really cared about each of the characters and in one of the chapters (I won't spoil it), there was a moment where I felt abandoned and not just Jodie's abandonment. As a player I felt I was more in the role of Aiden, protecting Jodie, which was unexpected but I loved that element of it,and during another scene as Aiden went all out crazy to protect her. While a very different story to Heavy Rain, the depth of the characters, interactivity and choice based system are both recognisable, and for me better to play since I had trouble reading the dialogue choices sometimes on Heavy Rain.If you stick with the game past the initial confusing time set up, you'll find it's a game completely worth having and playing over again. (The game has 12 endings based on gameplay so it's interesting to replay).

Whether you like the game or not depends on your view on what a game should be.Beyond: Two Souls follows the pattern of Quantic Dream's previous efforts (Heavy Rain, Fahrenheit) in that a significant portion of the experience involves you being either passive or active only to the extent of choosing dialogue options. As I enjoy a strong narrative, I find this approach to gameplay a welcome change of pace from filling the air with lead or stealing cars. This special edition is however not worth the extra expense. Sure, the tin case is a nice touch, but the extra content is lacking.I was especially looking forward to getting my hands on the soundtrack as veteran composer Hans Zimmer was attachedto the project.Imagine my disappointment when I realised that the downloadable soundtrack contained a paltry four tracks for a total playtime of 20 minutes.Compare that with my earlier pre-order of The Last Of Us when I got the "sights and sound pack" including a full soundtrack FOR FREE here on Amazon.co.uk.With that in mind I'd recommend Beyond: Two Souls to just about anyone -- but do yourself a favour and get the regular edition.

If your ideal game is killing everything that moves and constant fast paced action this may be a welcome change. The story is everything, but this is much more than an interactive movie. The story is told like a movie with segments going back to Jodie's childhood when she first became aware of Aidan. You quickly become attached to Jodie, genuinely caring what happens to her. There is plenty of action, starting with the CIA training grounds, which is genuinely fun and not a tedious necessity as in some games. An early highlight is the attempted capture of Jodie by a SWAT team, resulting in Aiden having to possess agents and bring down a helicopter. Most of the action is controlled by timed button presses or QTEs - which isn't a cop out as some people would have you believe. I find myself taking my time with the game as I don't want it to end.I loved every minute of David Cage's last game Heavy Rain, and this is even better. An absolute essential purchase and a great swansong for PS3.
